D ear friends, Central Europe is often spoken about as an intersection of history, nations and cultures. The terms like Prague and Vienna have captured the awareness of the international public since long ago. However, the idea of what lies between these international centres remains quite vague. Therefore, we would like to invite you to visit South Moravia. Be enchanted with its "genius loci", which has an impact on every visitor to this region. Countless visitors from the whole world have been surprised by the beauties of the Moravian south – meadows of Bílé Karpaty in full blossom, park landscape of the unique Lednice-Valtice area, which was included in the UNESCO list, centuries old wine cellars below the Pálava hills or in Šatov. So many people have been surprised by the riches of the Jewish sights, size of the Jewish cemetery in Mikulov or conditions of the well-preserved ghetto in Boskovice. Numerous visitors came to the metropolis of South Moravia – Brno to the traditional trade fairs and to visit local museums, galleries, Špilberk, Petrov or the Tugendhat villa, another UNESCO sight. How many eyes have seen the beauties of the Moravian Karst and the region along the Dyje River. How many people have tried to understand that freedom, which we can enjoy now, is not a matter of course when they see the remnants of the "Iron Curtain" in Čížov. How many people meditated about the value of human life in the Slavkov battlefield. How many people admired colours of folk costumes, nice songs and delicious meals and drinks in vintages and feasts. We do not know how many people have fallen in love with South Moravia and how many will do so in the future. However, we do know that its charm lies mainly in local people – open and hospitable, proud of their region. Come to be persuaded that we do not exaggerate. We will gladly welcome and treat you in South Moravia.

Treasures to Admire S
outh Moravia can be proud of its extremely rich history. Nothing is missing here – archaeological findings, castle ruins, chateaux, fortresses, churches and synagogues, pilgrimage places and battlefields, museums, galleries and mysterious places connected with rumours. Where should we start? Come with us from the South Moravian metropolis – Brno to all world directions. You will surely find interesting things on your way that will catch your attention. However, we will start in Brno. Two dominating features of the town are a "must" visit – the majestic fortress and former much-feared prison Špilberk and Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul. The church of Finding the Holy Cross is located close to it. In its basement, there is a Capuchin crypt. Now we stand in the historical centre and within a few minutes we can visit any of the expositions of the Moravian Land Museum or Moravian Gallery, Old town hall or admired Tugendhat villa, one of the jewels of the architecture of the 20th century. Nevertheless, we have promised a trip throughout the whole South Moravia so let us set out to the north. Boskovice belongs to important centres of Moravian Jews, which is also proven by the fact that the local Jewish cemetery ranks among the largest in the Czech Republic. Local castle and chateau are also worth mentioning as well as chateaux in near Lysice and Rájec nad Svitavou.
4 | SOUTHERN MORAVIA REGION
Testimony of Ages – Archaeological Findings South Moravia was settled in the earliest times. In the Glacial period, the mammoth hunters and the artist, who formed the unique statue of Věstonice Venus, lived here in the foothills of Pálava. If you want to know how the primeval people lived, come to Brno to see the exposition of the Moravian Land Museum in the pavilion Anthropos. Roman settlement in Moravia is proven by findings in Pasohlávky. In the reign of Marcus Aurelius, there was a camp of Roman legions here. Later on, in the 9th century, a significant chapter of the history of old Slavic tribes was written in South Moravia. It is proven by extensive excavations in the localities MikulčiceValy and Pohansko, which were significant centres of Great Moravia over a thousand years ago. Rotunda of Virgin Mary and St. Catherine, the walls of which are decorated with unique paintings of emperors of the Přemysl family, is one of the symbols of the early Czech statehood. Křtiny Křtiny POINTS OF INTEREST
Church buildings of this region are truly remarkable, e.g. Convent Porta coeli in Předklášteří u Tišnova or monumental Church of the Name of Virgin Mary in Křtiny. Old metallurgical plant in the Joseph valley close to Adamov is a noteworthy point of interest from another sphere. If we set out from Brno to the south, we will get soon to Rajhrad, an area of the Benedictine cloister, the Roman foundations of which are nearly a thousand years old. For three centuries, Mikulov was the centre of Moravian Jews. The rabbinic top of local unique cemetery has been visited by numerous Jews from the whole world till today. The Lednice-Valtice area displays charming chateaux, beautiful gardens and parks with a number of Romantic through-views and other interesting buildings. Who does not know Věstonice Venus from the worldwide known primeval finding place below Pálava? This short summary is completed with Mikulčice and Pohansko, two significant centres of Great Moravia (the oldest state in the territory of the Czech Republic). A few kilometres to the east from Brno, there is the battlefield of one of the bloodiest battles of the Napoleonic wars – Battle of Slavkov (Austerlitz). Its victims are remembered with the Peace Monument in the style of Art Nouveau and the exposition in the chateau in Slavkov. Near the Slavkov chateau, there are other remarkable objects: Renaissance chateau in Bučovice, chateau and park v Milotice, Knight Templar fortress in Čejkovice with large wine cellars and chateau in Strážnice with a collection of folk music instruments. How about the west? In the chateau in Moravský Krumlov, you can admire paintings from the cycle Slavic epopee of Art Nouveau painter Alfons Mucha. The chateau in Uherčice is far from being in full glory, but you can see the conservators directly at work. From the technical points of interests, we could mention at least the unique water mill in Slup, where an interesting exposition about milling is located, and Přímětice, which can be proud of a replica of the lightning conductor of the inventor Prokop Diviš. Before closing our tour in Znojmo, let us mention the castle Bítov and chateau Vranov nad Dyjí. Znojmo is not just the Romanesque rotunda with a fresco picturing the Přemysl family, but also mysterious, 30 km long underground labyrinth of passages and cellars, Znojmo castle, Gothic Church of St. Nicholas and rich cultural life. Now you can see that you can stay in Brno or set out to any world direction and it will surely be worth the effort.

Love of South Moravia F
olk traditions in South Moravia are varied and rich. You can find their signs at every step. You can go to see the folk architecture of South Moravia e.g. in the open-air museum in Strážnice, but you will surely find numerous cottages, wayside columns or wine cellars, which are preserved with love, in the whole countryside. The same applies to folk festivals – markets, feasts, putting up may-poles, fairs or folklore festivals, of which particularly that in Strážnice is internationally renowned. Richly decorated folk costumes serve as a proof of skills of local embroideries, lacemakers, dressmakers and shoemakers. Other crafts have been also passed from generation to generation, such as woodcarving, violin production, straw and leaves decoration production and Easter egg painting. Culinary skills are also inherited here – do not miss roast duck with cabbage or small curd cheese cakes. Traditions of South Moravia invariably include famous hospitality of local people and a glass of homemade wine or Slivovitz. Good meal, good drinks and good people belong together. Welcome among your own.

Region of Red and White W
ine-growing and wine culture have penetrated the whole South Moravia. There are omnipresent vineyards, cellars and cellar aisles. You can find great wines in many wine parlours, wine shops, in the representative exposition of the National Wine Salon in Valtice, in local winetasting events, Valtice wine markets or international trade fair Vinex in Brno. We may not forget a number of local vintages and celebrations of closing the hill or traditional vintages in Znojmo and Mikulov. The history and the present times of wine and wine-growing are presented by the exposition in the Mikulov chateau with its famous giant butt. Throughout the region, you can admire many unique wine-growing buildings, e.g. one of the biggest cross wine cellars in the whole world in Přímětice, protected Plže in Petrov or Baroque cellars in Pavlov. Wine-growing has been a part of South Moravia for over a millennium and you can see it everywhere. Come to get to know this hospitable region of red and white wines, region of Rieslings, Veltline, Frankovka and Lawrence wines.

Green Surprises I
f you have a picture of cultivated vineyards, orchards in full blossom and fertile fields attached with the term South Moravian countryside, you will be greatly surprised here. You will discover beech woods and orchid meadows of Bílé Karpaty, unique flooded forests at the confluence of the Morava and Dyje rivers and a bird paradise – Lednice ponds and surrounding park landscape of the Lednice Valtice area. You will be enchanted by the unforgettable silhouette of the Pálava hills, deeply cut canyon of the Dyje River or the Moravian Karst with famous Macocha grotto. South Moravia is extremely rich in nature beauties so one may not be surprised that there are three (!) areas protected by UNESCO here – Bílé Karpaty, Pálava and the Lednice-Valtice area, that the first Protected landscape area in Moravia – Moravian Karst – was established here in 1956 and one of four national parks in the Czech Republic was declared here – the National Park Podyjí.When you set out for South Moravia, do not forget to take good boots or a bicycle with you. It would be a pity not to take advantage of the great possibilities of hiking, cycling or horse riding. See you in the countryside!

National Park Podyjí The National Park Podyjí, one of four national parks in the Czech Republic, belongs with its 63 km2 to true natural jewels. Together with the National Park Thayatal, which was declared in 2000 on the right, Austrian, bank of the Dyje River, they form a unique natural area of European importance. The backbone of the whole National Park Podyjí, which stretches between Vranov nad Dyjí and Znojmo, is formed by the 40 km long valley of the Dyje River. Its numerous meanders and rocky slopes covered with woods have their unrepeatable charm. Age-old landscape modelled by the river forms a refuge for rare plants and animals. Historical sights lined along the river underline beauties of the nature along the Dyje River. A true architectonic jewel towers high above its water surface – chateau Vranov nad Dyjí. Do not miss its visit. The whole territory is well accessible along marked tourist paths for walkers and cyclists. You can learn more about the national park, its mission, history and biggest points of interests in the Visitors´ centre of the Administration of the National Park Podyjí in Čížov. www.nppodyji.cz

Protected landscape area and Biosphere reserve Pálava
POINTS OF INTEREST
Protected landscape area and Biosphere reserve Pálava lies to the north of Mikulov and represents a harmonically shaped landscape of South Moravia with characteristic relief of the Pavlovské hills. The uniqueness of this area occupying 83 km2 is also proven by the fact that it was included in the list of biosphere reserves of the organization UNESCO in 1986. Limestone hills of the Pavlovské hills represent home for very rare steppe, forest steppe, thermophilic oak forests and rock scree forests. The Děvín hill with a ruin of the medieval castle Děvičky is the highest hill of Pálava. Several kilometres further to the north from Mikulov, there is a dominating Turold hill with karst caves. Svatý kopeček (Holy Hill) with the Way of the Cross at Mikulov is another dominant of the Pálava region. A set of Nové Mlýny dams stretches in the north edge of Pálava. They are partially used for water recreation. They are followed with the flood plain of the Dyje River, where valuable flooded forests are combined with meadows and various swamps or water communities. Pálava can be also proud of one of the last localities of halophytes in the Czech lands, which can be found in the National nature preserve Slanisko u Nesytu. Protected landscape is accessible along marked tourist paths for walkers. Cyclists have to leave their bikes behind before entering the reserves. In the building of the Administration of the Protected landscape area in Mikulov, you can also visit an interesting exposition dedicated to Pálava. www.palava.cz

Lednice-Valtice area The Lednice-Valtice area occupying nearly 200 km2 is considered the largest complex of composed landscape in Europe and probably in the whole world. The cultural landscape between Lednice, Valtice and Břeclav, called "The European Garden" in the 19th century, represents a unique piece combining nature beauties with architectonic buildings. The Lednice-Valtice area was declared landscape memorial zone in 1992 and included in the UNESCO list of world cultural and natural heritage in 1996. The significance of the Lednice-Valtice area is enhanced with the remains of flooded forests of Dyje-Morava flood plain. In addition to this area, there are other nature reserves, e.g. the set of Lednice ponds with the largest pond in Moravia – Nesyt. In the Lednice-Valtice area, there are extremely valuable archaeological finding places documenting primeval and early medieval settlement of this landscape. The most important points of interest include the locality Pohansko. The Lednice-Valtice area is well accessible for both walkers and cyclists. Visitors can enrich their visit to the chateau area in Lednice with a romantic boat sailing along the Zámecká Dyje River. www.lva.cz

Active Rest FISHING
HUNTING
Thanks to their advantageous climatic and natural conditions, the fishing areas in South Moravia belong among the richest and, therefore, the mostly searched for in our republic. You can fish nearly everywhere (of course, with the exception of fish rearing ponds), for example in Brno or Vranov dams, in water reserves Nové Mlýny, Jedovnice, Výrovice and on the banks of the Dyje, Morava and many other rivers and streams. Should you not be satisfied with the size of your catches, you can try to catch a trophy piece in ponds Výtažník in Jaroslavice u Znojma or Pod Mlýnem in Sedlec. Information about permits and areas: Moravian Fishing Union, Brno, Tel.: 548 52 34 37
In South Moravian hunting grounds, game parks and pheasantries, the hunting lovers will get full satisfaction. Shooting grounds Horňácko and Pomoraví are especially rich in deer and wild boar. Fallow deer herds are raised in the game parks in Klentnice, Soutok, Bulhary and Radějov. Ideal conditions for hunting smaller animals can be found in the areas of Pomoraví, Dúbrava and Podluží. Phesantries in Židlochovice and Vnorovy are famous for pheasant breeding and shooting. Fallow deer herds are also raised in the game parks Vedrovice, Klentnice and Termanec. In selected hunting grounds, hunting cottages with stylish equipment are also available to the hunters. Information: LZ Židlochovice, Tel.: 547 23 10 01 GOLF
If you belong to golf lovers, you are awaited by 9 holes at the green in Slavkov u Brna, in Brno at the racing circuit or in the developing area at Jinačovice. www.golf-austerlitz.cz • www.grb.cz • pgcb.iol.cz LEISURE TIME SPORTS HIKING
If you want to get to know the size, variety and uniqueness of South Moravia, the best you can do is to put on comfortable shoes and set out along one of many marked tourist paths, which cross the whole Czech Republic. Your wandering might be inspired by any of the pages of this catalogue. We wish you rich, nice and unexpected experience while walking along the blue, red, green and yellow tourist paths. www.klubturistu.cz REITEN
If you share the idea that the best view of the world is from the horseback, you can come to South Moravia with great expectations. In particular on the farm of a famous stager Bolek Polívka in Olšany, in Hippoclub in Lednice or on the farms in Lechovice, Kyjov, Benešov and Ladná, you can try how pleasant it is to feel the warmth of horseback. If you want to pay a whole horse-riding course, you can use the offer of any of the riding schools in Brno or Slavkov u Brna. BAŤA'S CHANNEL
This historical watercourse called Baťa's channel provides you with a unique opportunity for admiring the east part of South Moravia - Moravian Slovakia - from May to September. From Otrokovice in Zlín region to Hodonín, you can take the advantage of 43 km of the original watercourse with 10 chambers and 17 km of follow-up river sections. Complex tourist programs have been prepared for you, including the possibility of becoming a captain of a motor moat. www.batacanal.cz
South Moravia offers enough opportunities for active rest and relaxation. Virtually in every town or bigger village, there are sport fields and sport centres. Do you like to play tennis, squash, visit a bodybuilding centre or spend an evening with bowling? Specific information about where and when to go and the relevant prices will be gladly provided in Tourist Information Centres. Are you enchanted with flying? You might like to use the flying clubs in Břeclav, Kyjov or Brno and admire the beauties of South Moravia from the bird's-eye view. Observation flights in motor planes and gliders provide you with a unique experience. Undulating landscape of South Moravia and advantageous winds also challenge you to stretch out your imaginary wings and try glider flying or paragliding. Should you prefer increasing your level of adrenaline on the ground, you might go to the Brno racing circuit and try your driving skills and the quality of your car.
WATER RECREATION
Swimming, diving, boat sailing, sunbathing or just relaxing at the water - this can be a description of an ideal holiday for many people. Such fans of water will find what they want in the recreation centres at Vranov dam, Nové Mlýny reservoirs, at Výrovice or Jedovnice. Sailing and windsurfing fans will come to Nové Mlýny or Brno dam. However, in addition to large dams and water reservoirs, there are numerous well-equipped indoor and outdoor swimming pools in many South Moravian cities and villages (e.g. in Brno, Břeclav, Hustopeče, Znojmo and Hodonín). Aqua parks have become the greatest hits of the last years. One of them awaits your visit in Vyškov.

You Go in the Right Direction S
outh Moravia is a paradise for cycling tourists. It has a thick network of marked and unmarked cycling trails and many interesting destinations that are interconnected with the trails. The oldest long-distance trail Greenways leads from Vienna to Prague through the south border country. It is followed by the Moravian trail bringing cyclists from the north along the valley of the Morava River and the Amber trail crossing the region of the Moravian Karst, which continues to Brno and Vienna. Last but not least, there is the unique Moravian wine-growing trail connecting all Moravian wine-growing areas from the west to the east. These backbone trails are linked with many regional trails. Some destinations on the cycling trails have been mentioned and you can read about others in the following pages. The names, such as Vranov nad Dyjí, Lednice-Valtice area, Bílé Karpaty, Moravian Karst and Špilberk, guarantee there is a lot to see in this region. However, there is one more thing, which makes wandering along South Moravia as pleasant as it surely is. It is the hospitality of local people, which has many faces but just one objective – your satisfaction.

Moravian Wine-growing Trails Moravian wine-growing trails connect the development of wine growing and respectful tourism in South Moravia. This admirable project is administered by the co-operating Partnership Foundation and wine-growing villages of South Moravia. The main trail, 280 km long Moravian wine-growing trail, connects Znojmo and Uherské Hradiště. It interconnects ten circuits; each of them goes through one wine-growing area and presents its specialities and points of interest. Znojmo wine-growing trail is 163 km long.

Moravian-Silesian Long-Distance Cycling Trails Moravian-Silesian long-distance cycling trails include two main cycling trails, which cross the region from the north to the south. The first one is the Moravian trail, which leads mainly along the Morava River and goes through the towns of Hodonín, Břeclav and Mikulov in South Moravia. The second one is the Amber trail, which will take you via Moravian Karst and Brno to the boundary crossing point Hevlín and up to Austrian Vienna. Both trails can be managed with normal bicycle. Thanks to their parameters, they belong to European cycling trails. Approximately two thirds of their length lead along the 3rd class roads with low traffic, the rest along reinforced forest and field paths.

Trade Fairs Brno The company Trade Fairs Brno is ideally presented by the fair programme including nearly 50 fair projects covering one half of the local market and the position of a leader in the region of Central and East Europe with a network of representations in 20 locations of the world. Thanks to an agreement in the view of the fair company needs, the Brno Municipality co-operates in implementation of investments aimed at improvement of the city infrastructure. The fair grounds are directly connected with the highway and there was re-established the air connection Brno – Prague with connection to the main European destinations. Brno is also the junction point within the gradually developed European high-sped railway network. The joint projects move Brno towards the family of the European trade fair capitals and they develop the international prestige of the Brno region as a whole.
The company Trade Fairs Brno has been preparing the celebrations of 75 years of existence of the fair grounds and organisation of trade fairs and exhibitions in the new era history. The company operates a unique fair complex in the European context with the are of 650.000 square meters, sensitively placed in the beautiful environment of the Pisárky valley. The 16 pavilions of the complex - some of them fully functional and dating back to the end of the 20’s of the last century – create a visual collection proving the development of the fair architecture. The grounds rightfully received the award of the "construction of the century". The entry of the German strategic partner Messe Düsseldorf in 1998 represented an extremely strong impulse for development of trade fair activities of the company and its infrastructure. Based on the suggestion of the partner, a new joint stock company Trade Fairs Brno (Veletrhy Brno, a.s.) was established and in 2001 the Brno Municipality joined its property structure.
