The genes load the gun – but lifestyle pulls the trigger
According to the INTERHEART study, nine factors predict 90% of heart attacks. Two of three clinical factors – diabetes and high cholesterol ratios manifest in young Indians and at higher rates. Of the remaining six behavioral factors, less active lifestyles accompanied by a diet surprisingly poor in vegetables and fruits are also indicated.

Traditional testing underestimates the risk in South Asians
The traditional screening for the risk factors for heart disease according to the Framingham Score and the NCEP ATP III guidelines underestimate the risk in South Asians. A more comprehensive evaluation, inclusive of genetic and inflammatory markers, dis-metabolism as evidenced by abnormal levels of glucose and insulin, and presence of coronary calcification may be required to better assess or disease.
RISK FACTORS Early, excess burden of conventional risks
LIFESTYLE Shortage of protective behavioral factors
GENETICS: Genetic disposition, inflammation ,dismetabolism
