When World War II began, however, the Japanese families who were farming the Rancho Palos Verdes area were interned for the duration of the war; many were relocated to the internment camp at Manzanar, California. On February 1, 1942, Kumekuchi Ishibashi and his wife Take were taken to a detention camp for Japanese in Bismarck, North Dakota. In July, 1942, Kumekuchi’s family including his son Mas, Mas’ wife, Miye, along with their son Satoshi, who was seven years old at the time, and Mas’ brothers, George and Aki were interned at Poston, Arizona. In a little over one year, Kumekichi was able to reunite with his family in Poston. They then moved to Utah to farm for the duration of the war. Mas’ brother, George and Kay, served in the 442nd Regimental Infantry Combat Unit. This unit received more citations than any other outfit [of its size]. Miye Ishibashi sold strawberries

Tom Ishibashi, who farmed on city-owned property next to Torrance Municipal Airport since the early 1960’s died last week at the age of 82.

SPOTLIGHT ON THE TREES The Tree Section of Manhattan Beach is considered one of the most desirable places to live. It is bordered by Sepulveda Boulevard to the East, Manhattan Beach Boulevard to the South, Rosecrans Avenue to the North, and the Sand Section to the West. It is sought after for its proximity to the ocean, LAX, and the easy commute to the city which makes it as appealing geographically as it is aesthetically. There is some debate over how the area adopted its name, “the Tree Section”. Popular belief is that the section took it’s name from the many species of mature trees that literally canvas the neighborhood, while others believe that the nickname came from the names of the streets themselves: Palm, Oak, Elm , Pine, etc. Regardless of origin, the area is also well known for its strict tree ordinance that prevents homeowners from removing most trees from their property without a permit from the city, thus preserving the visual attraction of the area. The Tree Section attracts families of all sizes, and like many communities in Los Angeles, it is an area that is in transition. Most of the neighborhood was initially built after World War II, and was occupied by the many aerospace workers that were employed nearby in El Segundo and Redondo Beach. Initially, the homes were smaller in size, ranging from approximately 1,000 square feet to 1,800 square feet. Today, developers have purchased many of these older homes, and have built newer, larger ones ranging upwards of 3,000 square feet. The architectural styles of the new homes have varied quite dramatically, from the many Cape Cod and Nantucket designs to the traditional Mediterranean styles of Tuscan and Spanish influences. It is not uncommon to see the more conventional
Craftsman style popping up, reminiscent of the turn of the century artisan movement; not to mention many custom, one-of-a-kind homes designed and built by local residents, which add dramatically to the diversity of the section. Lot sizes vary in the Tree Section, but most of the lots are typically 40 feet wide and range from about 110 to about 135 feet in depth, depending on what block and street one is looking at. There are exceptions to the norm, and on rare occasion, one can see lot sizes approaching 9,000 square feet. Not only are those lots hard to find, they are also expensive, as land value in this beach community can sometimes be 90% or more of the total value of the property. Home prices range from just under $1 million for a small post-war home, to well over $4 million for a custom built home situated on an oversized lot in a highly sought after location. Within the Tree Section there are several sub sections that are both extremely popular and notable in their own right. American Martyrs is an example of one, and this area is popular for a multitude of reasons. It received its name for its proximity to the local Catholic church and private school, American Martyrs. There is a waiting list to get into the school, as it is a distinguished institution and thus, quite popular. Some of the more admired streets in this section are 15th Street through 18th Street, as they offer something unique and hard to find: space. The lots in this section are typically 50 feet wide, which not only allows for a little more distance from one’s neighbors, but also allows more street parking and best of all--a very short walk to both nearby Live Oak Park and the downtown district of Manhattan Beach. In some cases, these lots can even offer a peak of an ocean view.
The other subsection of the Tree Section is what is called the Gas Lamp District, which is located near Marine Avenue. These streets are beautifully lined with gas burning street lamps which lend an enchanting, storybook setting to the area on breezy summer nights. Many of the lots in this area are typically smaller, sometimes only 25 or 30 feet wide. However, what one loses in size one gains in character. Prices in this area hold up very well, and are priced similar to the larger homes and lots nearby. The Tree Section is made up nearly entirely of residential properties with very few commercially zoned lots, making it ideal for families. It is not an uncommon sight to see children riding bikes in the street and families taking an evening stroll with their pets. Yet depending on where you live, there is often a commercial area with quaint shops and convenient restaurants just a short stroll away. Depending on the time of year, you can expect a few detours as homeowners will barricade an entire street for impromptu block parties. It’s certainly a place that you will find neighbors to be, well, neighborly. An experience sometimes long lost to an era gone by.

Here’s an interesting fact: if you bought that apple you sliced for lunch today from the grocery store, chances are it traveled over 1,500 miles from the ground where it grew to your kitchen. That’s a huge carbon impact for a snack, side dish, or single meal, and that’s saying nothing about the harmful chemicals and creepy gene manipulations that were involved in keeping your food fresh, edible, and parasite free during the long journey. It’s an unfortunate reality of modern life – much of the food we get from the supermarket tends to have a shiny, plastic-y façade ….and if you’re eco-conscious, it brings with it a guilty conscience.

The Hermosa Beach Farmers’ Market, located on Valley Drive between 10th and 8th Streets, is open Fridays from 12 pm to 4 pm except Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve day, and New Year’s Eve day. The market offers seasonal fruits and vegetables as well as fresh cut flowers, nuts, fresh bread and more. There’s more of a small neighborhood feel here, and if you live in the area you’re likely to bump into someone you know while you shop because there just isn’t a whole lot of ground to cover to visit all the vendors. The ratio of produce / take-home product stands to prepared food stands is about 40 to 60. You’ll find the venue tucked away behind the Parks & Recreation building and the tennis courts. The market has a reputation for a good assortment of fresh cut flowers at reasonable prices. Parking can be difficult to find around this market, so plan to spend a little extra time finding a spot and be prepared to walk a block or two to get to the market from your car. The Manhattan Beach Farmers’ Market, located on 13th Street between Valley and Morningside Drives is open Tuesdays from 11 am to 4 pm (5 pm between Memorial Day and Labor Day). This market has a great variety of local and organic fruits, vegetables, herbs and eggs, as well as a host of prepared foods such as gluten free baked goods, frozen yogurt, Korean and Mediterranean food, juices, bagels, tamales, crepes, salsa, kettle corn, and much more. The market also hosts vendors for meat and seafood, olives and olive oil, pasta, honey, dried fruits and nuts, as well as jams, jellies, and nut butters. For the hard core cooks out there, check out Gary’s Knife Sharpening booth. He’s there every week. And for gardeners up for a change of pace, there are Marcel’s Orchids stand and Atkins Nursery, featuring potted plants, citruses, avocados, guavas and other fruits not so commonly found at many farmer’s markets.

The market carries a wide range of fruits and vegetables as well as an impressive array of prepared foods. There are also crafts vendors with handmade goods. The Redondo Farmers’ Market, located on Harbor Drive, is open Thursdays from 8 am to 1 pm. The market offers fresh and dried fruits, fresh vegetables, jams and preserves, nuts and honey, fresh fish, cut flowers, bedding plants, and some prepared foods such as baked goods, kettle corn, and BBQ chicken. Special perks to this location include an hour of free validated parking as well as beautiful views. Located just west of Veteran’s Park, the market literally overlooks the ocean, so close that you can hear the surf as you shop. The Riviera Village Farmers’ Market, located on Catalina Avenue and Avenue I is open Fridays from 3 pm to 7 pm. The market offers seasonal fruits and vegetables as well as meat and eggs, honey and olive oil, jams and jellies, flowers, plants, and herbs, all produced locally by traditional farms in southern and central California. In addition, this market hosts a “Shop with the Chefs” event at 4 every week. Visiting chefs will shop with you and demonstrate how to cook your newly purchased organic produce. Meet at the information booth. It’s a great way to start your weekend, stock your fridge, and learn something new. Frequently there will be live music to accompany you while you shop, as this is a popular venue for local musicians.

A cool new feature going up at the Manhattan Beach and Riviera Village Markets is the placement of QR (short for Quick Response) codes at each stand. Each farmer will now feature a photo of the farm where the produce is grown, plus a sign with a QR code. Scan the code image with your smart phone, and up will pop the farm’s website plus articles about the farm and what and how they grow and harvest the food that you’re about to eat. Buying what’s in season means reducing your carbon imprint and supporting the local farm movement, but it also means eating only the best and freshest, in-season fruits and vegetables all year. Once you’ve had an organically grown strawberry fresh off the vine, you’ll never look at the genetically-engineered-for-travel supermarket variety the same way again. Keep in mind too, that farmers’ markets aren’t just about the food. They’re an opportunity to get to know the people who bring you the foods you’ll take home to your family. Most farmers’ market vendors are people who love food and agriculture, and more often than not, they’re ready, willing, and able (often thrilled) to talk to you all about the beans or peaches or cheeses or olive oil that you’re buying. So in this sense, the farmers’ market is a wonderful educational opportunity. You’ll get a strong sense of community, too. Foodies, hippies, cooks, artisans, bakers, parents, office workers, gardeners – they all become one community when they’re at the market. You simply get a different, and better, vibe in the open air talking to the growers and your neighbors than you do traveling down the aisles of the grocery store sedated by muzak. Becoming a farmers’ market regular means meeting new friends, sharing advice, and trying new things. With the South Bay’s beautiful weather and laid back attitude, our farmers’ markets are some of the best anywhere to find not only healthy food, but a fertile social experience.
