Registration opens 13 December 2017 More than half a million people across the UK are expected to watch and count their garden birds for this year’s Big Garden Birdwatch, organised by the RSPB. Big Garden Birdwatch is the world’s largest garden wildlife survey. Now in its 39th year, it takes place on 27, 28 and 29 January 2018. People are asked to spend just one hour watching and recording the birds in their garden or local public space, then send their results to the RSPB.

Love Food? Then You’ll Love JRC!

Is There Room at the Inn?

Christmas is a time of mixed emotions. There’s fun, family time and there are festivities, alongside a sense of knowing that not everyone has a home and a family to call their own. Now, more than ever, you may be wondering if you could foster a child or young person and after 20 years as a leading Independent Fostering Agency, Chrysalis Care can provide all the advice and guidance you need to begin your fostering journey. Chrysalis Care foster carers are based across London, Kent, Essex, Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire and benefit from expert 24 hour advice, guidance, training and support. If there is room at your ‘Inn’ and you want to join Chrysalis Care in transforming lives through fostering children and young people, please contact them to speak with one of our knowledgeable staff members today by calling 020 8298 2800, by emailing info@ chrysaliscare.org or by visiting Chrysalis Care at www. chrysaliscarefostering.org.

Stage School Beats off the Bullies It is a well-known fact that bullying and poor mental health are problems amongst children with 1 in 2 admitting to being bullied and 1 in 3 suffering from a mental health problem. These are worrying statistics, and something the Anna Fiorentini Theatre & Film School is working towards changing. The multiple award-winning school has just won a £10,000 grant from The National Lottery and Big Lottery Fund to deliver antibullying workshops to schools across London. These invaluable workshops will incorporate drama, singing and dance to encourage communication, teamwork and selfconfidence amongst primary and secondary school students. Principal Anna Fiorentini launched the initiative after seeing the overwhelmingly positive affect her school’s classes have had on her students’ confidence, self-esteem and wellbeing. The part-time school, which has branches across London, provides exceptional performing arts training for 4-18 year-olds delivered by top industry professionals. Whilst success stories include students gaining leading roles on both stage and screen, the school prides itself equally on its ability to instil a sense of purpose, self-belief and a thirst for learning in its students. To find out more about anti-bullying workshops or classes at Anna Fiorentini’s London branches contact hello@annafiorentini.com , call 020 7682 1403 or visit www.annafiorentini.com. 4

Walthamstow Children Take Over The Mall

Pupils from South Grove Primary School in Walthamstow have spent a day running The Mall, Walthamstow, as part of Children’s Takeover Day and Retail Matters Week. The pupils, aged between 7 and 10 years old, were taking part in a national initiative to give children a valuable insight into the world of work. The Takeover Day enables pupils to shadow professionals and find out what is involved in the day to day running of a busy shopping centre. After the event, the school was given £150 in Waterstones vouchers and each child was presented with a certificate, a goody bag, and a £5 Smiggle voucher. In a packed schedule of events, the children were given the opportunity to work alongside members of the management, marketing and security teams, complete several interactive challenges and design a map or poster for The Mall. In addition, local marketing agency, Impact Business Advisors, provided live coverage of the event through The Mall’s social media channels. Each child wrote a report of their day at The Mall with the winning report published on The Mall’s website. The winning pupil also received a special prize. Local film company,Videobop, filmed some of the children to create a news report, which was shown on The Mall’s external big screen.

Be a Christmas Jumper A new fun emporium has come to Stratford. ZAPspace is a trampoline park in a theatre featuring a neighbourhood bistro and secret speakeasy. A major redevelopment project has seen the venue formerly known as ‘The Rex’ in Stratford transformed into a stunning indoor trampoline park. The first trampoline park in a theatre brings a long-neglected old building back to life while retaining many of its attractive features. The wider redevelopment also introduces a new restaurant, the Old Town Bistro, and underground speakeasy, The Curious Fox, to the area. As the only trampoline park in the Stratford area, ZAPspace is jam-packed with features, including a new-to-the-UK ping-pong jump, a drop slide, a cardio wall, and a tumble lane as well as large open trampoline areas and dodge ball courts. The venue also features a cafe, a SkyBar (suitable for private and corporate events), party booths and changing rooms with showers. There is also a soft play area for the little ones. For more information, visit zapspace.co.uk.

Will the Beast be able to find love to break his terrible curse? The whole family can boo the wicked witch Spite, giggle at the hilarious travelling sweet seller Dame Betty Bonbon and join in Charlie Cupid’s silly matchmaking games.

Upswing’s Artistic Director Vicki Amedume told Primary Times, “I wanted to make a show that speaks fluently to both adults and children. So we have decided to make a piece of work with no words but rather uses movement, humour and tenderness to celebrate family life even through the complexity and instability we can, at times, feel in the world around us. We want the show to touch on these challenging themes but at the same time be full of the joy, thrills, excitement and danger that we look for in circus.” The Ramshackle House is at Stratford Circus Arts Centre from 4 – 24 December and is suitable for ages 3+. Guess How Much I Love You

Theatre Royal Stratford East pantos offer a friendly and inclusive experience both kids and adults love and never forget. One audience member said, “I was taken to Stratford East to the pantomime every year as a child and every year I now make the journey all the way from Hastings with my own children just for the panto because it is simply the best there is. I hope they will bring their children one day. The panto at Stratford challenges their views and teaches them that there are people who are different from them.” Another visitor commented, “It was the best panto we have ever seen, we will always come back here for panto. You really have got everything spot on, from diversity to songs. We totally loved it.” Let your hair down with the feisty Rapunzel and friends in a magical re-imagining of this much-loved tale, featuring original music, laugh-out-loud comedy, mind-bending magic and hilarious audience participation. It’s no surprise that Theatre Royal Stratford East’s pantomime is known as one of the best in London (‘Oh yes it is!’). Over 27,000 people attended last year’s panto Sinbad the Sailor with The Times calling it ‘My favourite panto of the season’. Last year saw a major revamp of the event and the public response was spectacular with many ‘5 star’ reviews and comments. This year Santa Specials run on 2, 3, 9, 10, 16, 17, 21, 22, 23 and 24 December. See the website at www. eorailway.co.uk for more details. If you can’t make the Santa Specials, the Railway also has postChristmas ‘Mince Pie Specials’ running on 27, 28, 30 and 31 December. They are a great day out for all the family away from the repeats on TV, tablets, computer games, DVD box sets and out in the fresh air. However, with a free mince pie for all adults, they won’t help tackle your post-Christmas waistline.

Something Fishy

Pupils at Shadwell’s Blue Gate Fields Junior School tried eating some new fish species to coincide with Seafood Week. They were introduced to seafood in a hands-on session that allowed them to handle and taste fish and other seafood. Presenter Paula Williams, who is also the Schools Coordinator of The Seafood School at Billingsgate, told Primary Times, “The purpose of these kinds of events is to get children handling and trying seafood. We had the students peeling prawns, investigating whole fish, watching fish being filleted and tasting mackerel dip. It’s a very hands-on session.” 72% of adults don’t know it is recommended they eat two portions of fish a week, including one oily fish. By encouraging children to try seafood at a young age there’s hope more children will develop a lifelong love of fish.

Principal Anna Fiorentini launched the initiative after seeing the overwhelmingly positive affect her school’s classes have had on her students’ confidence, self-esteem and wellbeing. To find out more about anti-bullying workshops or to sign up for your school, contact hello@annafiorentini.com , call 020 7682 1403 or visit www.annafiorentini.com.
