Red Nose Day is a time in the school year that students remember for a lifetime - donning a nose, dressing up and coming up with all kinds of wacky ways to raise funds for a good cause. It isn’t just an exciting opportunity to take part in a fantastic day of fundraising. Red Nose Day also gives students a great chance to learn more about the world around them and how Comic Relief is working to support vulnerable people both at home in the UK and around the globe. To help schools get red-y for a day of fundraising and events, teachers can now pre-order a free fundraising pack tailored specifically for primary schools. The packs are bursting with ideas – fundraising guides, posters, stickers and balloons – to help ensure schools will have an unforgettable time. Comic Relief also offers school curriculum materials and videos that teachers can use to help raise awareness of the world around them and those living incredibly tough lives. To have these tips, tools and classroom ideas land in your school’s post box this January, pre-order your pack now – just head to www.rednoseday.com/primarytimes. Save Money on Bus Travel Passengers travelling on Stagecoach buses in Kent and East Sussex can save up to 40% on their bus ticket by using the firm’s Smartphone app. The bus company is offering cheaper day, evening and week tickets in the hope it will encourage more passengers to switch to mobile ticketing which it says helps speed up the overall journey time for its customers. At busy times when people are queuing at the bus stop, it’s much quicker to hop on board with a mobile ticket to show the driver. The app offers bus users a digital solution for buying and using bus tickets alongside existing contactless and cash payments on the bus. Day and week tickets can be purchased on the app in advance of travel, which saves time when boarding the bus. No internet or data connection is required to show the ticket which can be activated at any time up to three months after purchase. Showing the ticket to the bus driver takes just a few seconds which helps keep buses running punctually at busy times. The Stagecoach Bus App is available for free on Apple and Android mobile phones and offers journey planning and live bus tracking as well as mobile tickets. Payments via the app can be made by PayPal, Apple Pay or Google Pay, or by debit or credit card.

Instant Ice Cream
This awesome Instant Ice Cream recipe comes from Dr Michelle Dickinson’s The Kitchen Science Cookbook. Dickinson has made it her life’s mission to make science and engineering accessible for all. This latest recipe looks at the scientific principle of phase change and takes 10 minutes.
Equipment and Ingredients
• One small zip-resealable sandwich bag • One large zip-resealable plastic bag • 120ml (1/2 cup) cream or full fat milk. • 12.5g (1 Tbsp) sugar • A few drops of vanilla or other flavouring of your choice • 3-7 cups of ice • 75g (5 Tbsp) salt
Instructions
1. Add the cream, sugar, and vanilla to the small bag and seal, ensuring that any excess air is released. 2. Place the ice, the salt and the cream-filled bag into the larger bag and seal. 3. Vigorously shake the large bag over a sink for approximately five minutes. Stop when the cream has started to freeze and turn into a solid. 4. Remove the small bag and quickly rinse off the salt solution with cold water. 5. Pour the ice cream into a bowl, add your favourite toppings and enjoy eating your newly frozen dessert.
Follow us on Twitter - @PT_Kent
Explanation
Ice cream is an emulsion, or a mixture of two liquids (water and fats) which do not normally mix together. To make ice cream, the milk or cream mixture needs to change its state from a liquid to a solid. If the mixture was simply placed straight into the freezer, the water part would freeze first, forming large, crunchy ice crystals. Ice cream tastes better when it is creamy rather than crunchy, so the goal in ice cream making is to create the smallest ice crystals possible. By vigorously shaking the bag, any large ice crystals that may be forming are broken up into smaller crystals, resulting in a smooth and creamy ice cream. The freezing point of ice is lowered by the addition of salt, so it starts to melt. As this ice melts it draws heat energy from its surroundings - including the cream mixture enclosed in the smaller bag - cooling it enough to cause the liquid cream emulsion to freeze, changing it from a liquid to a solid and forming ice cream.
The Kitchen Science Cookbook is perfect for parents and children to enjoy together. It’s packed full of fun experiments families can do at home. Dr Dickinson’s The Kitchen Science Cookbook is available online and from all good high street stores for £19.99.

Starting to look at secondary schools? We give you the lowdown on what to do. Applying for secondary school is one of the most important decisions you are going to make because it’s likely to have a huge impact on your child’s future, way beyond the school gates. There’s some essential ‘homework’ to be done before you make that all important choice and you must make sure you know the deadlines for applying via your local authority. For some, it won’t be an issue, as catchment area rules determine your first or other choices, decided by postcode or feeder school. However, for those of you who can choose, the task can seem a daunting one. To help you through the process, follow our tips for some forward planning and get the most out of a school open day.
Head to the Open Day
Once you’re satisfied with your shortlist and you’ve done your homework, it’s time to do the most important thing of all and visit the schools.Nothing beats going to see the school for yourself, so get the most out of your visit with our tips and ideas.
The grand tour
Most open days will feature a pupil led tour. Ask lot of questions and you’ll hear all sorts of interesting things from your friendly guide that don’t feature in the prospectus. Talk to as many pupils and parents as you can manage on the tour for maximum feedback. Don’t forget to take in the atmosphere and environment of the school, to get a feel for whether your child would be happy in these surroundings.
Choosing your new School
Choosing your New School
Students in action
As you’re on the school tour, observe the children in school, as they will often be a great indicator of a school’s ethos. You’ll get to see how children treat each other and how they interact within the classroom and corridors. Are they happy? Do they seem confident and animated? Are teachers welcoming and friendly, are you getting the feeling of a warm, open attitude?
Make a Shortlist of Schools
Firstly, make a shortlist of the schools that your child could attend by looking at nearby local authority’s websites or visit www.education.gov.uk. Make sure you check their admission rules carefully to ensure your child is eligible for a place. You also need to be happy that your child can travel to school easily and that siblings, if relevant, could go to the same school. After that, it’s time to take a look at the facts and figures to make a comparison on paper.
Do Your Homework
Now it’s time to do some online research of your own. All schools have to have a website. Among other things, this has to include details of the curriculum, admission criteria, behaviour policy, special educational needs policy, disability policy, links to Ofsted reports, links to performance data, the school’s latest key stage attainment and progress measures. But the other things on the website may be at least as important. Does the school feel an exciting place to be? Yes schools can be exciting; maybe they’ve changed a bit since our time. Is there a regular newsletter and is there lots going on? Does whoever writes the website sound enthusiastic about the school? If they’re not, you may not be either.

The Headteacher’s talk
Don’t miss out on the Head teacher’s talk, usually given at specified times on open days/evenings. You’ll find out what priorities and emphasis the Head gives to various aspects of their school, and will be able to see if these aspirations match your family’s own. The Head should come across as genuine, inspiring and bursting with pride for both school and pupils, as well as being very clear about the school’s achievements and goals.
Expectations for behaviour
Make sure you query the levels of discipline that are imposed, such as the consequences for late/absent work, unruly behaviour and the uniform code. Feel free to raise serious disciplinary matters such as bullying and how it is handled. The responses should give you a good indication of what is tolerated at the school. 3 Sept - 7 Oct 2018
11
Choosing your new School
Equal opportunities for all
School should bring out the best in every child. If yours requires additional help in any areas of learning, ask about the support available to enable them to reach their potential. Query how students are monitored to ensure their learning stays on track and they don’t ‘slip under the radar’ and fall behind their peers. Ask about communication systems that are in place to ensure teachers and parents can work together to be a constant support to your child.
Life outside the classroom
Essential learning doesn’t just happen in the classroom. Look out for interesting extra-curricular activity posters on the noticeboards. If your child likes sports but isn’t an ‘A’ team candidate, will they still get to participate? If there are after school clubs, check what they are and when they take place.
Peace of mind
The switch to secondary school is a big one and communication will be key. It is important to know how to contact staff if you have a problem or concern. Find out how contact details such as teacher names and emails are provided, and whether the first point of contact should be via telephone or email. It’s important to see how easy it is to contact school staff in case of an emergency. Information about good pastoral care should be plentiful as it’s an essential ingredient for a happy school life.
It’s an open day, so keep an open mind
Remember this is about your child, not you. Try not to be influenced by your own educational experience as it may not be relevant. Find out what your child really thinks and don’t hesitate to take advice from trusted teachers who you feel know your child best – you may be surprised by what they tell you. In the end, trust your instincts, find the right environment for them to be happy, then sit back and watch them flourish.
My First Book of Quantum Physics Everything around us is composed of very, very small things known as subatomic particles. When scientists started to discover more about these particles they realised that in such a tiny world the laws of physics did not apply and they needed to generate a new set of theories, which are known today as quantum physics. The science of these particles allows us to have electronic devices from smartphones and computers to medical imaging equipment and microwaves. However, quantum physics also pushes us to the very boundaries of what we know about science, reality and the structure of the universe. This new world is an amazing place where quantum particles can do weird and wonderful things. Have your mind blown as you find out fun facts like how two atoms can exist in the same place. My First Book of Quantum Physics is an entertaining illustrated guide which explains key concepts and big ideas in a simple and accessible way, giving children a fun and engaging introduction to the fascinating and mysterious world of physics. It’s a great way to enthuse them with STEM subjects in general and Physics in particular. My First Book of Quantum Physics is available online and from all good high street retailers for £12.99. 12

The Whitstable School
Ana Gibson has been enjoying her post as Headteacher at The Whitstable School (formerly CCW). The school promotes ‘putting learning first’ by helping pupils to acquire the core knowledge and skills they need to be confident, useful members of society. They recognise curiosity, creativity and hard work as building blocks for pupil progress and deep learning. The school believes that the arts are at the heart of the school’s success, that creativity is as tangible in the science lab as it is in the dance studio and that the arts are seen to be as vital to their pupils as Maths, English and the Humanities. The school has student-led termly exhibitions where they showcase their work to visiting guests and parents. The open spaces are used purposefully - the debating chamber, the student leadership chamber, and the world of wonder science exploration centre. Furthermore, student work is permanently exhibited in their atrium and recital hall. The school was officially rated by Ofsted as Good in February 2018. A visit to the school during the day confirms the Ofsted judgement that teachers create stimulating learning environments that motivate pupils to do their best and make strong progress. The school welcomes visits from all stakeholders. For more information, please visit www.ccwhitstable.org.uk.
Spring Grove School
Limited spaces are still available at Spring Grove School for an immediate start. Why wait? The school offers an outstanding allround education and a fantastic start in life for boys and girls aged 2 to 11 years. They are a happy, family prep school that specialises in ‘free-range’ children - nurturing and developing all who join to their full potential. They are able to do this because they have small classes in which the children receive expert attention and tuition, preparing them perfectly for both grammar and senior independent schools. Set within an idyllic 14 acre rural setting close to both Ashford and Canterbury, Spring Grove School offers one of the most beautiful playgrounds in Kent. The school is small enough for staff to know every child, as well as their family, and for them to encourage each and every pupil to be self-confident and independent learners. There is no better way to experience life at Spring Grove School than to talk to their staff and pupils and to see the school for yourself. They are always pleased to arrange visits for both prospective parents and pupils. A typical visit, organised on a weekday and at a time to suit you, would consist of an informal chat with the Headmaster and a tour of the school, where you would see pupils carrying out their day-to-day activities. You would also have an opportunity to view Spring Grove’s facilities. If you’d like more information or would like to arrange a visit for you and your family, please call Spring Grove School on 01233 812 337 or visit www.springgroveschool.co.uk.

Hitting the right notes From Early Years to Sixth form, music is at the heart of Kent College Canterbury. More than three-quarters of pupils have music lessons and the Junior Choir numbers over 90 children. Head of the Music Department and choir trainer and conductor, Jackie Spencer also trains the hugely successful Kent College Choristers, most recently seen on TV as finalists in the BBC’s 2018 Songs of Praise ‘Junior Choir of the Year’, as well as runnersup in the Barnardo’s National Choral Competition. In the Senior School, former Choral Scholar Julian Ross heads a talented music department that includes pianist and composer Dr Annalise Roy, and guitar and electronic music specialist John Shillito. There are productions of operas and musicals, regular chamber concerts and an annual showpiece concert that features the school orchestra and soloists, as well as a choir drawn from pupils, staff and parents. There are also band nights, jazz and folk ensembles, and the Crowther Competition which showcases some of the most talented of the school’s performers.
The KC Music School has outstanding facilities including two large rehearsal rooms, and a recording studio, with a Great Hall also being constructed. The construction of the Great Hall also heralds an exciting new partnership, as Kent College becomes a key sponsor for the Canterbury Festival. As the Hall will be used as a Festival location from 2019, this partnership will open up a whole new world of opportunities for performing arts at Kent College, both on stage and backstage. For more information, please visit www.kentcollege.com.

3 Sept - 7 Oct 2018
Mary’s Meals are asking you to bring hope to a hungry child with this World Porridge Day. Children all over the world are preparing for the new term, including more than 1.2 million learners who receive a daily meal from Mary’s Meals. The charity works with some of the world’s poorest communities to set up school feeding programmes that encourage children to attend class, learn, and work towards a better future. World Porridge Day, 10 October, celebrates the huge difference that a daily mug of porridge from Mary’s Meals makes in the lives of chronically hungry children. This October, schools across the UK will be joining in with the Porridge Smiles fundraising campaign to send a real message of hope to children living in poverty. Mary’s Meals is inviting you to host a porridge party fundraiser at school, any time in October. It’s a great way to bring staff, pupils and parents together and everyone will have fun creating a smiley face in their bowl of porridge using tasty toppings. To request your free Porridge Smiles fundraising pack – which includes tips for setting up your party and a poster to publicise your event – visit www.worldporridgeday.com and complete the online form. You’ll also be able to see some of the best Porridge Smiles from last year in their 2017 Hall of Fame. It costs just 7p to provide one meal, so your school’s fundraising will make a huge difference to children receiving Mary’s Meals. The charity is committed to spending at least 93p of every £1 donated directly on charitable activities.

The school’s vision is based on the idea that ‘Every moment, every day, every individual counts’, and encourages all members of the school community to have tolerance and respect for each other, whatever their beliefs. They base their ethos on the Christian values of Compassion, Friendship, Hope, Forgiveness and Wisdom, which support the belief that every child can achieve and that disadvantage is not a barrier to destiny. At St George’s Church of England Foundation School pupils have the unique opportunity to develop learning from the age of four through to the Sixth Form with a staff who are committed to improving the life chances of children in their care. A traditional approach, modern facilities and a shared desire to make a difference to everyone in the school as well as their local community are what drive them. The team at St George’s believe that as a school they have a collective responsibility to provide the best opportunities they can in the classroom, through their pastoral system and in their local community. This does not mean that they always get it right, but it does mean that they are passionate about removing barriers and challenging what is possible. Canterbury Cathedral Choir
Canterbury Cathedral Choir are offering a unique opportunity for boys who would like to join them in September 2019. They are looking to award substantial scholarships to talented boys. Auditions, for a long time referred to as voice trials, will be held on 10 November 2018. Don’t wait until then, though! Any boy who is 7 or 8 years old and who enjoys singing can be considered. The Cathedral organist, David Flood, will be delighted to meet and advise them at any convenient time. It is not necessary to have had any musical training at all as Dr Flood is just keen to see potential. He will offer lots of encouragement and advice about how to prepare for the audition. He can answer any queries as well as providing all sorts of information. Dr Flood ensures that all the music-making in the Cathedral is fun and that the life of a chorister is a wonderful and unique experience. The Cathedral Choir House has recently enjoyed a £2 million renovation whilst the choristers, all 25 of them, also enjoy the excellent facilities of St Edmund’s School, Canterbury, receiving very substantial scholarships from the Cathedral. Canterbury Cathedral Choir enjoys the very highest reputation across the world, performing to many thousands of people every year at home and through radio and television performances. The choir records regularly and their CDs, of which the newest has just been produced, are highly regarded. The choristers also have the opportunity to participate in major tours. A two-week tour of America in April this year was a huge success. The life of a chorister is full of excitement with the huge reward of
being part of such a special team. It is the chance of a lifetime. To learn more, please contact David Flood on 01227 865 242 or davidf@canterbury-cathedral.org. Further information and a short video can be seen at www.canterbury-cathedral.org/worship/choir.

An Interview with Jaqueline Wilson Jaqueline Wilson, world class author and all-round lovely person, has recently released the latest in her Hetty Feather series. Rose Rivers is a Victorian tale that tells the story of a young girl who lives with her artist father and fragile mother. She has everything money could buy, but it’s not enough. When a new nursemaid, Clover Moon, joins the household, Rose finds a true friend, and starts to learn about the world outside the house. Rachel Benson from Primary Times was lucky enough to catch up with Jaqueline Wilson upon the release of Rose Rivers. Jaqueline willingly gave up part of her Saturday morning, speaking to us right after her daily ritual of writing for at least an hour. She is cheerful, humorous and humble, and as we talk about everything from social media to whether Margate beaches still have donkeys, she shares some of her thoughts on her latest release. What was your inspiration for Rose Rivers? I thought it might be quite interesting to write about a Victorian girl who on the surface seems to have every privilege but has just turned 13. Most Victorian girls at that time didn’t get sent away to school like Rose’s brother and you were not expected to think about having a career. You were expected to float around the house arranging flowers and doing not very much. Rose is bright and restless and fed up with things and I thought I’d ‘put the cat among the pigeons’ - in the course of the novel she forges two friendships that in those times and for her family would be considered inappropriate. She makes friends with the new nursery maid who is actually the Clover Moon of the previous book and with a young, slightly wild man, with dark good looks. It was interesting for me to think what life was like for teenage girls then, and though it seems so totally different from a current 13 year old, looking at their social media sites and being very knowledgeable, I think all 13 year olds get restless and fed up and have ‘inappropriate’ crushes. I hope that any girls reading Rose Rivers would identify with Rose and understand her.
All your stories are grounded in reality and so relatable. Was that a deliberate choice? It was. When I was growing up in the fifties and early sixties, I read avidly, but children’s books mostly had happy endings and were a little bit illogical. It was a very happy middle class atmosphere and from when I was about 8 or 9 I used to try and find adult books that had children in them because I found that then you could read about what life was really like. I knew I wanted to be a writer from when I was about 6 years old and I did seriously think ‘right, when I grow up, if I get lucky enough to be able to have books published, I want them to be as realistic as possible so that children can read them and believe in the characters.’ Follow us on Twitter - @PT_Kent
‘Double Act’ is coming to the Polka Theatre. Do you think that theatre is another way of showing reality? It is, and it’s also very enjoyable for me because it’s the only opportunity a writer gets to see how their characters go down with people. In a crowded theatre it’s just magical.
What words of wisdom do you have for budding young writers? Read lots, simply because I’ve never met a writer that isn’t a keen reader too. I often suggest to children to keep a diary, in whichever form they want, simply because so many people want to be writers but never get round to it, if you keep a diary and just write a tiny bit each day, it’s surprising, if you keep it up, how much you can actually get done. It’s simply getting words on paper. When you’re writing just for fun, just for yourself, you could write anything you want to as long as you’re still interested in it. If you get fed up, it isn’t a sin to stop writing a story. Write something else. The whole thing is not to plan it out beforehand. Surprise yourself with what you’re writing. If you want to be an imaginative writer, it’s good to remember that imagining it and somehow getting it down on paper are the two most important things.
Rose Rivers is a wonderful tale for all young readers, and is available online and from all good book shops for £9.99. 3 Sept - 7 Oct 2018

DIY Circus Lab for Kids
This year the UK is celebrating 250 years of circus, and a new circus book is out to celebrate this. DIY Circus Lab for Kids by Jackie Leigh Davis gives families everything they need to produce their own circus. Dive into the youth circus community and learn about juggling, acrobatics, manipulations, balance and clowning. The book opens with a do-it-yourself prop making class, and provides enough homemade equipment to get you started on some fun circus basics. Rising circus stars will then move on to lessons in toss juggling, flower sticks, poi, human pyramids and how to move on to even more tricks and skills. And best yet, kids will see how to combine skills into an act, and acts into a show. DIY Circus Lab for Kids also includes the Circademic Corner and safety check boxes whenever skill-learning requires adult supervision. Primary Times have five copies of DIY Circus Lab for Kids to give away to five lucky readers. For your chance to win, simply tell us how many years the circus has been in the UK.
