Strawberry Ripple Ice Cream

As the weather gets warmer (we hope!), what better way to cool yourselves down than a delicious, healthy ice-cream straight from your own kitchen? Mrs Bun the Baker shares her secrets on this healthy sweet treat from her book ‘Baking with Mrs Bun the Baker’. The easy-to-follow, child-friendly cookbook is packed with favourites and tried and tested, approved and munched recipes from the Young Buns who attend the award-winning cookery school. This book gives children an insight into how exciting baking can be and will inspire confidence in adults who have never baked before.

Repeat for all the strawberries. Avoid creating big pieces as they will only end up as lumps of ice in the final ice-cream.

Ingredients – you will need:

container and place this into the freezer. Be patient as you will need to leave it for at least 6 hours before you can eat the ice-cream! If you take it out 10 minutes before you want it, the finished ice-cream will be easier to scoop.

FROM KITCHEN ZERO

TO BAKING HERO!

15 strawberries 225ml double cream: use extra thick cream, if you prefer – you don’t need to whip it! 100ml sweetened condensed milk 1 teaspoon vanilla essence 75ml single cream 2 tablespoons icing sugar: optional

Method

1. Have a 500ml freezer-friendly container at hand 2. Wash the strawberries and remove their stalks. Get a strawberry,

hold it between your thumb and finger, and squish it into a bowl.

Follow us on Twitter - @PT_Kent

3. Pour the double cream into a jug. Whisk the cream until it’s sticking to the whisk - it should look like ice-cream on top of a cone. Add in the condensed milk, vanilla essence, single cream and the strawberries. 4. Mix the ingredients up for a ripple effect – but don’t over mix or you’ll have pink ice-cream with no swirls! Have a taste. If it’s not sweet enough for you, add in some or all of the icing sugar. 5. Pour the mixture into a 500ml freezer-friendly plastic

Variations

Use other berries such as blueberries, raspberries, blackberries – or use lots of different berries together. Add some fudge pieces and squeeze in some toffee sauce before it goes in the freezer. For chocolate-chip ice-cream, add chunks of your favourite chocolate: plain, milk or white. Or, again, mix them together. Chop and mash a banana for a delicious banana ice-cream. Baking with Mrs Bun the Baker is available for £12.99 online and from all good book stores. For more information, please visit www.mrsbunthebaker.net

Sparrow Soars Upwards

Almost half a million people across the UK spent an hour watching the birds that visit their garden or outdoor space as part of the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch earlier this year, counting more than 7.5 million birds in total. The house sparrow remains at the top of the UK Big Garden Birdwatch rankings with almost 1.2 million sightings throughout the weekend but for many species fewer birds were recorded than in 2018. In Kent, the top three most common garden visitors, in order, were house sparrow, starling and blue tit. House sparrows showed a 7.5% increase in sightings in Kent, placing top of the county’s charts this year. UK house sparrow numbers, reported by participants since the Big Garden Birdwatch began, have fallen by 56%, but in recent years, national numbers have slowly started to rise again, giving conservationists hope that at least a partial recovery may be happening. For a full round-up of all the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch results and to see which birds were visiting gardens where you live, visit www. rspb.org.uk/birdwatch Photo credit: Ray Kennedy (rspb-images.com)

Open-Top Bus is Back for Another Season

Ola Idowu would say to anyone else thinking about returning to nursing, “Go for it. Trust your instincts. If this is your passion, you’ll find a way.” The 33-year-old went into the profession, having watched her mother Felicia caring faithfully for her patients in Nigeria. Not only did she pass on that enduring commitment of care to her daughter, she instilled a work ethic that Ola now wants her son Tami to witness. Ola graduated with a BSc nursing degree before seven-year-old Tami was born. She is now a treasured member of the team at the Trevor Gibbons Unit in Maidstone, where her skills, experience and heart for mental health have been making a difference for the past year. Kent and Medway NHS and Social Care Partnership Trust would love to hear from previously registered RMNs and RNLDs. It runs the Return to Practice programme in conjunction with Canterbury Christ Church University. The next course starts in January 2020 with the deadline to apply in October. Like Ola, you could look to come back into the workplace now on flexible hours as a healthcare assistant in advance of the course starting and you regaining your PIN. To hear more of Ola’s story and for more information on Return to Practice, please visit www.kmpt.nhs.uk and, for a chat about the possibilities, call Emma Hutchinson in the recruitment team on 01227 812 351.

Thanet’s open-top bus is operating again for the summer.Visitors and locals can sit back and savour the bracing sea views from the open-air top deck of the number 69 bus. Running the same route as last season, between Ramsgate Boating Pool and Broadstairs Stone Bay, the open-top bus operates at weekends up to 29 September and everyday during school holidays. Joel Mitchell, the new managing director of Stagecoach told Primary Times, “Thanet has an incredibly vibrant seaside culture with so much to see and do. Drivers live locally and know the route by heart. They are part of the community and take pride in providing such a special attraction for locals and visitors.” Having been a bus driver since 2003, Stuart Draper is one of two regular drivers on the open-top route and says “The great thing about the open-top is that people can hop on and off as much as they like and come back another day and experience it in a different way.” Timetables are available at local outlets, at bus stops and online at www.stagecoachbus.com. For more information, call 01227 828 108 or e-mail matthew.maytum@stagecoachbus.com.

Happy Birthday Bear Hunt The perennial classic We’re Going on a Bear Hunt by Michael Rosen and Helen Oxenbury is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. Author, Michael Rosen, launched the celebrations at ZSL London Zoo with school children from Tower Hamlets. Walker Books are celebrating the anniversary with a massive giveaway of 10,000 large format editions of the book via various charitable organisations including the National Literacy Trust, Read for Good, The Reading Agency and the Siobhan Dowd Trust. With over 11 million copies sold worldwide and available in 42 languages, the story has certainly stood the test of time to become a firm family favourite. Photo credit: Alex Dimos

Star Read

There are some very strange goings on in this selection of stories, not to mention odd characters, some of them human. Sadly letters revealing one of the most horrifying situations in Cloud Boy is based on fact. They show what can be achieved when you set your mind on something. Hope you enjoy them as much as I have.

Debbie

Super Sloth

- Robert Starling (Anderson Hb, £12.99) Sloth was ordinary, living an ordinary life until he read a book someone had dropped about a superhero and decided to become one. Hearing Toucan’s distant cry for help, Sloth rushed to his aid. If you know anything about Sloths you will know they move very slowly and by the time he reached Toucan the crook, an anteater, was long gone. Having failed to fly, Sloth was just about to give up his superhero ambitions when he overheard all the other animals talking about their fruit being stolen and worrying about starving. With the anteater being well guarded they didn’t see what could be done - but Sloth could. Not fast, or able to fly, a sloth is very good at moving so slowly they look like a bit of a tree which gave him the idea for a cunning plan. See if it works in this laugh aloud picture book with a loveable title character. There S Night Walker are expressive pictures and a few sentences Ali Sparkes (Oxford £6.99) on each page to encourage new readers and A victim of another nasty attack by Liam, interesting sloth facts at the end. Matt hits back. He’s shocked when Liam

Spook-tacular Surprise

Anna Wilson (Stripes, £5.99) Poor Vlad - keeping his home life secret from school and vice versa is getting harder all the time. Despite recent successes, the pressure from his mother to be a better, stronger vampire is increasing with the threat of being locked in the Black Tower making things worse. His school worries aren’t lessening either, despite securing the part in the school play he wanted. School bully, Boz, is increasing his attempts to get rid of Vlad and drops a bombshell in front of the school which causes Vlad to panic and make his worse fears come true. Where will he go from here? Another spellbinding story about the world’s worst vampire with plenty of funny moments mixed with some touching ones. Short novel with some pictures.

The Case of the Vanishing Granny S

Alexander McCall Smith (Conkers, £6.99) Billy, Fern and Joe Shortbread perform in their family circus, but also enjoy solving mysteries. They are concerned when they see Tom, a member of their audience, looking worried. On hearing he is upset because his grandmother has disappeared and no one is doing anything to find her they want to help. They immediately put their detecting skills to use finding clues to solve. Their circus skills give them an additional advantage, but will they be able to find Tom’s gran? There could be a big surprise in store. This exciting story is the first in a new series ‘The Big Top Mysteries’. Short novel with pictures to encourage new readers.

Midnight at Moonstone - Lara Flecker (Oxford, £6.99)

Never able to match the achievements of her siblings, or expectations of her father, Kit decides to leave it all behind and visit her grandfather at Moonstone Manor, a costume museum. She’s never met him or been there, but had a leaflet of the place where her mother had grown up and felt she might belong there. Her long and arduous journey ends in disappointment — her grandfather doesn’t want her and the place is a dilapidated mess, about to be sold by the council to a sleezy character. As night falls, Kit discovers a massive secret — all the mannequins come to life. Once she is over the shock she gets to know them and realises she must do up the manor to stop it being sold, not only for her grandfather, but to save the mannequins. With only three weeks to go this is a tall order, she will need all the help she can get, but will she be able to persuade the posh mannequins who spend their time bickering and have never had to work to help? This is a highly entertaining read, with a variety of well rounded characters full of humour and some touching moments with enough drama and excitement to keep readers gripped — I couldn’t put it down. The beautiful, atmospheric illustrations add much to the story and large print encourage readers to medium length novels.

Pog

is later rushed to hospital and horrified to later hear he has died. His fellow insomniacs, Elena and Tima offer comfort as they prepare their den, but are soon embroiled in another mystery. Meanwhile Spin, who encourages vampire speculations with his look and nocturnal behaviour, is in hospital receiving treatment for his very rare condition that could change his life. While there he thinks something odd is going on. Apparently healthy children are being admitted and quickly dying. Having confirmed the children’s graves are empty Spin joins up with Matt, Elena and Tima. Using their special communicating skills, they set out to find out what is going on, but will they be able to get over old conflicts? This third book in the Night series is as gripping and intriguing as the previous two. We at last discover the truth about Spin and his condition and see a slight shift in the dynamics of the group. There is plenty of exciting action and shocking moments mixed with humour. Once again, I was totally gripped by this medium length novel.

Jessica Merserve (Macmillan, £6.99) On a school trip Clara can’t wait to see all the animals in the wildlife park, especially the tortoise. Her new teacher, Mr Biggity, just wants to show how much better and more important humans are. Despite his best efforts to show human achievements over those of animals, Clara isn’t so sure he is right. She doesn’t say anything, but watches the animals carefully, noting things Mr Biggity obviously misses. In fact, by the end of their trip she IS sure.... that he is completely wrong! See why by following the additional facts shown in the detailed illustrations. Thought provoking picture book with just a few sentences on each page, and much to discuss from the pictures.

S

- Padraig Kenny (Chicken House, £6.99) After their mother’s death Penny and David move to her old family home with their dad. It is supposed to be a fresh start, but it is an old, creeky house in the middle of a dark forest and feels unwelcoming. Little do they know it contains a portal to another world guarded by a small furry, magical creature called Pog. The children get the shock of their lives when they accidentally meet him, but luckily he is friendly — unlike the creatures creeping through cracks in the door of the portal, or the strange one who forms a connection with David. He has no idea what this is or what it intends to do with him. Soon he is in great danger, as is everyone else. Will they be able to save themselves and protect all the goodness in the world? This is a thrilling story full of surprises and strange creatures with an extremely likeable title character. Fair size print, full length novel.

Adventure Duck vs Power Pug

S

Steve Cole (Orchard, £5.99) A meteor hits earth and breaks into pieces. One piece lands on a pond near an egg which immediately starts to glow. A wise-quacking duck decides to sleep on the deserted egg and wakes to discover he has super powers. His adventures can begin! After having fun with his new powers the egg, which has become Yoki, developed a long moustache and can communicate with Adventure Duck (or AD) using ESP, tells him he should use his powers wisely and usefully. Other animals have been affected by meteor pieces and one, Power Pug, intends to use his powers to take over the world. Can Yoki persuade AD to become a real hero and save the world - and is he up to it? This is a very funny story, first in a new series, with likeable, quirky characters. It has large print and plenty of pictures to encourage newly developing readers onto novels.

Cloud Boy

- Marcia Williams (Walker £6.99)

Angie and Harry are neighbours and best friends — almost twins since birth. They spend all their time together and have just had a tree house built spanning both their gardens. Although she hates writing, Angie vows to keep writing in the diary she gets as a present. When Harry becomes ill and his illness starts to worsen, she finds a comfort in writing down her feelings. It seems this is one way she takes after her grandmother who was imprisoned in Changi Jail as a young girl during the war and found writing secret letters to her cat helped keep her spirits up. When they discover the letters, Angie and Harry beg to hear her read them, which she does a few at a time. They are in awe of her strength and courage enduring the most horrific conditions imaginable. These spur Angie on to use her grandmother’s coping mechanisms to help her through her own traumas. This is a deeply moving story — or rather stories — showing how people can be brave in different ways in difficult situations. Vividly written, you feel everyone’s pain, especially Angie’s and her grandmothers. Medium length novel — best keep a hankie handy!

Unicorn Land

Unicorn Land is the most magical experience your child will ever have, with memories to last a lifetime. The UK’s first ever unicorn tour is a wonderful opportunity for children to meet, groom and ride unicorns or have a memorable trip in a unicorn princess carriage. Unicorn Land is an enchanting world, with all things unicorn, including a unicorn inflatable rodeo, theatre shows, unicorn DJ, face painting, bouncy castle, unicorn dress up and the chance to take part in the Great British Slime Off competition with celebrity judges. The idea for Unicorn Land came from 9-year-old Alyssya Carrington, whose father Stafford, an award-winning entrepreneur and event organiser, took her to visit a unicorn for her birthday. When Stafford saw the huge smile on his daughter’s face, he knew he wanted other parents and children to experience the same magical feeling he did when Alyssya first saw a unicorn. Unicorn Dream has partnered with Make a Wish, to make seriously ill children’s wishes come true. For every 10 Unicorn Land tickets sold, they will grant a magical wish for a very special child, giving away hundreds of tickets. During the tour, unicorns will be visiting sick children, spreading happiness and magic across the country. For 15% off your magical experience at Unicorn Land, book today using your exclusive discount code PRIME15 at www.unicorndream.co.uk. Prices are from £37 and adults go free. Tickets are selling fast so don’t miss out. 14

Little Green Fingers... National Children’s Gardening Week 25 May - 2 June Gardening comes naturally to children. Endlessly curious, children are often delighted to learn first hand where the food on their plate comes from and how big plants grow from tiny seeds. Allowing them to get outdoors and get their hands dirty has incredible benefits and there is no better time to start exploring than National Children’s Gardening Week 2019, which runs from 25 May – 2 June. To help spark your children’s enthusiasm, we have outlined some of our favourite activities to get the kids gardening.

Grow a Hanging Harvest Not everyone has space for a full vegetable patch in their garden, so the humble hanging basket can be a great way to save space, but still pack in the produce. Encourage your children to get their hands messy and fill a lined basket with compost. Put your chosen plants into the compost, and ensure the kids check the basket every day and water regularly. Cherry tomatoes, strawberry plants, chives, basil, parsley and lettuce will all produce loads of tasty food throughout the summer months if cared for well.

Start with Seeds A great way to introduce your children to gardening is simply by planting a packet of seeds on your windowsill. Use an eggbox as your tray and fill each compartment with potting mix and seeds of your choice. Children aren’t always blessed with patience, so produce like radishes, lettuce, basil and salad cress will all grow very quickly and begin to show results within just a few days. Create a Pinecone Bird Feeder Attract different bird species into your garden by combining mixed seeds, lard, cheese and raisins in a mixing bowl. Tie a string to a pinecone and cover it with your sticky mix, ensuring you fill all the holes. Pop in the fridge until set and hang from the different branches in your garden. Hanging some near a window can be a great way to get a close-up view of your flying friends.

Make a Fairy Garden Fairy gardens are an easy gardening activity for kids that will make their imagination run wild. Fill a wooden box, planter or trough with soil and choose a few different plants for the fairies to play around in. Some of our favourites for May and June include pansies, geraniums and hyacinths. Once this is done, encourage your children to choose a variety of mini props and accessories including marbles, pebbles, twigs, lollipop sticks and, of course, the fairies themselves. Build a Bee B&B Bees numbers are falling, so by building them a home you are both having fun gardening with your children and helping the bee populations. You can make one of these easily by cutting the top off a large plastic bottle with scissors (ensure you do this for your children). Gather some bamboo sticks and cut them to the same length as your container, then pack them tightly into your plastic bottle. Using different widths of bamboo is best, as the bees can choose between the different sizes. Attach a hook to the back of your bee house, place in full sun at least one metre off the ground, and simply watch and wait!

Be the next Picasso with Plants Create a picture with a mixture of big, medium and small edible plants with different coloured leaves, flowers or fruit. Plants like lettuce, basil, rocket, swiss chard and salads can be good for background colours of the painting. Bigger plants like chillies, tomatoes, peppers and courgettes can be good for main parts of your painting. Once you’ve picked an area with good sunlight, dig some multi-purpose compost then rake the soil so it’s nice and fine. Divide your canvas into sections using your sand. Go wild with the patterns and mark out a picture, planting different types of edible plant into the different sections of your canvas. Use contrasting colours of leaves, fruit and flowers for the different sections. Over a few weeks you should start to see your picture come to life. Grow a Pea Shoot Sarnie Why go to the supermarket when you can DIY the kids’ packed lunch? Make your own pea shoots perfect for scrumptious sandwiches and salads! Grab a container and put an even amount of multi-purpose compost. Sow the pea or micro-green seeds very thinly on the compost, covering all the soil. Keep the compost damp over the next few days then see they will start to sprout. And voilà! Snip the shoots once they’re four centimetres tall and make way for irresistible sandwiches. The best part is you can put the container back in the window, keep on watering them and they’ll grow back at least three times.
