Holiday Fun at Westwood Cross

Award for Kent Early Years and Childcare Service

Kent County Council’s Early Years and Childcare Service has scooped a nationally recognised award for one of its innovative products, the ‘Enhancing Family Involvement in Children’s Learning (EFICL) Toolkit – Pathways to Excellence’. The toolkit contains a wide range of resources to support Early Years providers and all those working with and supporting families and young children to work more closely with families to improve and enhance their involvement in their children’s learning. The toolkit is used by Early Years providers, including schools, childminders, Children’s Centres and foster carers to build respectful and meaningful relationships with parents/ carers and families. It is designed to raise their understanding about children’s dispositions to learning and the importance of learning through play.

When you bring the family to Westwood Cross this summer, look out for the Mini Pop-Up Park located near Debenhams. On key dates throughout the holidays, your little shoppers will be kept amused with entertainment and activities. There are plenty of parent and child parking spaces at Westwood Cross and you can even hire a kiddy car from Guest Services so you shop whilst your child drives. The opening of a new Pop-Up Park outside Primark on 24 July will start with Bark in the Park, Westwood Cross’s very own version of Crufts. There will be plenty of pet-themed activities providing fun for all the family. The DinoPark is back by popular demand. The Westwood Cross dinosaurs will return to the Pop-Up Park between 31 July and 26 August. During their stay, their friend Pete, an animatronic T-Rex, will be stopping by to say hello. There will also be a visit from the jungle zoo and more. While you’re at Westwood Cross take the opportunity to shop for your new holiday wardrobe, back to school or starting college items. If you’re buying a gift why not treat someone to a Westwood Cross gift card. It’s accepted at nearly all the shops and restaurants which makes it the perfect choice. Westwood Cross, what better place to eat, feast and shop? Plus there’s free parking. The shops are open until late and the leisure venues are open even later. Keep up to date with all the latest information by following Westwood Cross on Facebook, Twitter or going online to www. westwoodx.co.uk.

Summer at The Historic Dockyard Chatham

The Doc is back this summer with more experiments and more hands on fun! Having failed to travel through time last year – the Doc has decided that maths is needed as well as science. The activities that Doc.Yard and his assistant Bunsen will show this year will bring maths to life in a fun and engaging way which will include making rainbows with water fountains and learning the role that maths played in making ships at Chatham. Bringing together collections from major national institutions, the latest exhibition, Breaking the Chain, tells the story of the Dutch raid on the River Medway 350 years ago. Combined with all the usual fun including exploring the dockyard’s submarine HMS Ocelot, making rope in the Victorian Ropery and opportunities to let off steam in three unique play areas, your summer is sorted at The Historic Dockyard Chatham. Don’t forget, tickets last for a whole year so pay once and enjoy the site repeatedly for the next 12 months.

Michael Rosen – children’s novelist, poet and former Children’s Laureate – recently announced the shortlist for the 2017 Scholastic Laugh Out Loud Awards (The Lollies) which celebrate the funniest children’s books. Having long championed humorous books for children, Michael Rosen told Primary Times, “This is a collection of 12 whizzy, crazy, hilarious books. They are guaranteed to tickle. Parents and teachers wondering how to keep your children interested in reading, why not start here? And you can always start them off by reading them out loud - funny voices an’ all!” The Lollies were created in response to findings from Scholastic’s Kids & Family Reading Report, which found that what two-thirds of children aged 6-17 looked for when choosing books for themselves were ‘books that make me laugh’.

With this in mind, Michael Rosen and his judging panel, consisting of Nicolette Jones, journalist and Sunday Times Children’s Book Editor and Katie Thistleton, presenter and host of the CBBC Children’s Book Club, were tasked with making the selected shortlist from over 130 books submitted by children’s publishers. Kent’s Rich Past Comes Alive with a Click

How much do you know about your county’s history? If the answer is “not enough”, the answer lies in a unique and exciting project that gives teachers access to a free on-line educational resource to inspire young people to take a closer look at the rich heritage of where they live. And it’s also available to anyone else who would like to find out more. 100 Objects that Made Kent is led by The Historic Dockyard Chatham and supported by five partner museums including Canterbury Museums & Galleries. Museum teams identified 90 objects that define the county and invited schools and young people across Kent to complete the list by coming up with 10 more. They range from the Canterbury Cross to a Mummified Cat and the iconic Kent Spitfire. The 100 Objects that Made Kent project enriches and enlivens the school curriculum with real objects from Kent’s past. This educational resource can be used both in the classroom and during museum visits. The website can be searched by time, period, subject or Key Stage. Explore the objects today at www.100objectskent.co.uk.

Kent is Delicious

Hoath Primary School in Canterbury, St. George’s Church of England School in Wrotham and Teynham Church of England Primary School in Sittingbourne have all been named as finalists for this year’s ‘Kent is Delicious’ cookery competition. The hotly contested foodie final will take place on Friday 7 July at the Kent County Show, Detling. Organised by the Diocese of Canterbury’s Communities and Partnerships Framework the competition invites youngsters to create a tasty recipe using as many locally produced, grown or sourced ingredients as possible. This year the theme was breakfast. Hoath Primary impressed the selection panel with their Super Scrambled Egg dish which uses eggs laid by the school’s own chickens - and their Rise and Shine waffles served with a local fruity dip. Previous winners, St George’s C of E School in Wrotham created a Strawberry and Apple Smoothie, which includes homemade yoghurt, local fruits and honey, and their Cheese and Bacon Scones. Hoping to pip them to the post is Teynham C of E Primary, with their Spring Fever breakfast pancakes, which use locally sourced flour and are topped with local fruits. Building an Exciting Future

It’s just like building with giant Lego bricks – that’s the verdict of children watching a 100ft tall crane carefully lower another classroom unit into place as the new Ramsgate Free School takes shape before their eyes. The children have monitored the progress from ground clearance to the arrival and erection of the purpose-built learning centre which opens for the new school year in September. Executive Head Teacher Michaela Lewis told Primary Times, “The local community has clearly caught the buzz of excitement about the new school. We have received lots of requests from parents keen to visit the school and who are interested in placement for their children.” Colin Power, Project Manager for constructors McAvoy told us, “A workforce including joiners, plasterers, electricians and dry liners are busy at work on the 48 15 metre long units that arrived during May by sea and road from Ireland.” The primary school is for 420 children aged 4-11 years. The purpose-built complex will be renamed Ramsgate Arts Primary School to reflect its arts-based facilities, including a recording studio, a music suite and arts and dance centres. Ramsgate Free School is part of the Viking Academy Trust with Upton Junior School and Chilton Primary School.

Literacy with the Lionesses

As summer approaches, the England Women’s team look like they have a strong chance of taking home the trophy at this year’s Women’s European Championships. In celebration of this, the Literacy Trust has teamed up with the Football Association to create a toolkit for teachers based around the England Women’s team, also known as ‘the Lionesses’. The ‘Literacy with the Lionesses’ toolkit is packed with fun footballthemed activities for boys and girls in Years 5 to 8, using the excitement around the Lionesses’ progress in the Women’s Euros to develop boys’ and girls’ writing and reading skills. Activities in the toolkit include ideas for assemblies, the home and for the classroom, as well as lots of information about the Championships themselves. Additional activities online include guided reading, writing activities, an odd one out quiz, a synonyms quiz, bingo, story writing and description activities. The free toolkit is designed to be used alongside a mini-story featuring the Lionesses, written by top football author Tom Palmer. The story will be released a chapter at a time during the summer term, starting from 3 July, to read aloud to a class or in an assembly. The ‘Literacy with the Lionesses’ toolkit is completely free. For more information and to download the kit, visit www. literacytrust.org.uk.

All the finalists will make their dishes at the Kent County Show, which will then be tasted by an expert panel of judges made-up of local food producers, chefs and farmers. Plans are already afoot for next year’s competition. The 6 B t Children’s Scien Books A raspberry tasting cloud, a caterpillar inspired spacesuit, the cost of a space toilet and other amazingly unexpected facts about space; a poetic journey throughout the animal kingdom, and a guide to creating monster marshmallows, sticky slime and other wacky experiments in your own home lab are just some of the creative and inspiring topics on offer in the six science books shortlisted for this year’s Royal Society Young People’s Book Prize. UK publishers submitted their best science books for under-14s to the 2017 Royal Society Young People’s Book Prize and now an adult judging panel has narrowed them down to the six best books. The prize celebrates the best books that communicate science to young people in an accessible, creative way and has been running for over 25 years. The judges’ top picks include A First Book of Animals by Nicola Davies, which instils a sense of wonder and questioning of the natural world in young readers. 100 things to know about Space by Alex Frith, Alice James and Jerome Martin, is also a great introduction to the scientific process. Find out how astronomers figure things out, like how do we know what the sun is made out of in the inside? Learn about the magic of our bodies with The Awesome Body Book by Adam Frost. Or engage with innovative ways to present data by reading IF… A Mind-Bending Way of Looking at Big Ideas and Numbers by David J Smith. The young readers judging panels are made up of up schools, science centres, reading clubs, community groups, scouts and brownies. More than 1000 young people from across the country will be getting stuck into the six shortlisted books and will have the final say on the winner, which will be announced in November 2017. Malcolm doesn’t like animals, which is a problem because his family love them. Their house is full of pets. The only bright spot on the horizon is the Year 6 school trip but the catch is, it’s a trip to a farm. Over the next days, Malcolm changes. With the help of a magic goat, Malcolm is transformed into a whole series of animals. He thinks differently, speaks differently and eats differently. But will he end up the same as he was before? Sometimes the hardest thing to become is yourself. We have ten signed copies of this hilarious new book for lucky Primary Times readers to win. Hello Pet Patters! I’ve been sent some interesting questions - so here goes!! And the first one asks, is it OK to have a dog and a cat in the same household? Fair enough, and certainly you would normally think that dogs chase cats - so no! But in fact, the chasing is triggered more by the dog’s natural instincts to chase its food - like rabbits or rats etc. And cats being more solitary (ask teacher!) creatures, will try to run away from any other larger animal they see, thus encouraging a dog to chase them! But, dogs learn things - they listen to, and then obey their “bosses” - you! Ideally you would have a puppy and a kitten, babies, and they will both then look to you as their guide and ‘boss’. Praising the puppy (or young dog) when it learns to sit, and let you present the kitten in your arms for it to sniff, and then giving a reward (small treat) will teach it very quickly that sniffing is OK. But ... any leaping forward, barking or trying to chase must be given a sharp “NO!”, and no treat to eat. Likewise with the kitten, staying calm (stroke it a lot) when the puppy or dog is sniffing, with no hissing or clawing also deserves an immediate treat. After practising this routine several times a day, for a few weeks, it should then be possible for the two to meet without you holding them, but still giving rewards if they behave nicely. And subsequent ‘growing up’ together once their identities have been recognised by each other will ensure a lifelong acceptance, and quite likely a genuine friendship. Neither dogs nor cats know what they are - they are just pre-programmed to behave in certain doggy or pussy ways - BUT these can be modified by teaching, and then their own experiences. So ... Happy training!!

Primary Times Pets Ok - now here’s a thing! Which bird lays the largest egg?? Well, it’s likely to be the largest bird yes? But you might not think of it as a bird when I tell you it’s the ostrich!! You think of birds as flying creatures, but the ostrich is just too heavy to fly, so it’s ‘wings’ have become decorative, and are used more for display when it is looking for a girlfriend or boyfriend. The feathers are also rather ‘fluffy’, with gaps in between, so they wouldn’t be much use as ‘wings’ - but they can make an attractive flutter! However, their eggs are certainly the largest - and are equivalent (teacher!) to about 180 chicken eggs! That would certainly make a HUGE breakfast, eh?!! But I don’t know where you would find a saucepan big enough if you like your eggs boiled!! Yum YUM!

Moving swiftly on ... Can you feed rabbits and guinea pigs the same food? Well, there’s a puzzle worth answering! And immediately I can say NO - don’t! This is because guinea pigs need extra Vitamin C in their diet, whilst rabbits don’t. Rabbits can live on grass and hay, and don’t really need other vegetables. So, it’s OK to give rabbits some guinea pig food, as well as just their hay food, but never the other way around. Guinea pigs must always have their special diet (which includes extra Vitamin C), and not just the simple diet of hay you give rabbits. Guinea pigs need the Vitamin C content of fresh vegetables, dandelion leaves etc, as well as some grass to chew and keep their teeth short. But giving them just rabbit food will quickly make them ill, and then you must take them to your vet! Oh dear!!

Thank you to Clinton Jefferies, the Primary Times Vet, for answering our readers’ questions 22
