Autumn Fun in the Woods

Autumn is a spectacular season as our trees transform from lush greens into stunning displays of red, gold and brown. Embrace the crisp air and celebrate with these top ideas from the Woodland Trust. As the days shorten and temperatures drop, our woodlands show signs of the new season. Walk along wooded paths, crunch on fallen leaves and smell fruits ripening in hedgerows. Use the Woodland Trust website to find a wood near you and experience the amazing autumn colour. Autumn is an enchanting time to be out in the woods and get muddy together with your family.Visit the Nature Detectives online for lots of exciting ideas to tempt kids – and grown-ups – from bat spotting to twilight treks. Head off on an autumn scavenger hunt to see how many autumnal signs you can discover while you’re out and about, or try collecting fallen leaves and conkers and make a wonderful woodland collage. Why not celebrate the season at one of the Woodland Trust’s events? Light up at a lantern-making workshop, discover magical mushrooms on a fungal foray, pull on your wellies for a woodland wander or get crafty with crispy leaves. Don’t forget to tell the Woodland Trust what you see. Recording your seasonal sightings with Nature’s Calendar will help scientists observe how the changing climate is affecting the UK’s wildlife. Can you take a note of the first signs of autumn, from ripe berries to leaves changing colour? Head to www.woodlandtrust.org.uk for more great ideas to embrace the autumn season. Photo credit: WTML

There were some brilliant individual successes and a great overall score at A Level for Ashford School students this year – and nearly three quarters of them have achieved their first choice place of further study. One fifth of all grades were A* and nearly half were at A*/A. Other highlights include 16 A*s for Mathematics, four A*s and 7 As for Physics and, of the two students who sat Music A Level, one achieved A* and the other an A. Head of the Senior School, Mr Tom Wilding, told Primary Times, “This impressive set of results once again reflects the hard work, aspirations and determination of our students to achieve their very best and the dedication and commitment of our specialist staff in supporting them. Barnardo’s Launches Free LGBTQ Resources

Barnardo’s has launched free lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) resources to help teachers better educate children about same sex relationships and gender and sexual identities. The free LGBTQ resources aimed at primary and secondary schools have been launched by the UK’s largest children’s charity to sit alongside their existing Real Love Rocks resources which teach children and young people about healthy relationships and awareness of child sexual exploitation. Teachers attending Barnardo’s Real Love Rocks training sessions have called for support as they felt unsure what they were allowed to teach about lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans relationships. Many teachers said they would not feel confident in their response if a child raised a question about gender or sexual identity in the classroom and wanted more LGBTQ inclusive curriculum content for sex and relationship education classes. The new animations and classroom activities have been developed to help address these gaps and are tailored to

be age appropriate, educating children at primary school level about the different make up of families in society, with the aim of dispelling stereotypes about gender and sexual identity. To download the free LGBTQ resources or to find out more about Barnardo’s existing Real Love Rocks education materials, please visit www.barnardosrealloverocks.org.uk.

What’s Better than a Day of Sport? A week of sport, that’s what! Sport Relief is back from 17-23 March. As well as The Mile, there’s a week of activities to choose from. It’s the ultimate ‘feel good, do good’ event for any school. It’s the perfect opportunity to have fun, bring the whole school community together, and teach your pupils about the real difference they can make to people’s lives. Put the date in the school calendar now and make sure your pupils don’t miss out. To get you off to a flying start, Primary Times has worked with Sport Relief to put together a free fundraising pack, full of ideas, posters, balloons and stickers. The pack also contains curriculum-linked resources to make sure that your Sport Relief event is also a time for your pupils to learn about the difference between their lives and the lives of others. Save the date and order your free primary fundraising pack at www.sportrelief. com/primarytimes. Last year thousands of schools and nurseries across the country got involved with anything from running a sponsored-mile to taking part in a 24 hour badminton tournament. Everyone had a great time and raised a staggering £6 million in the process. Michelle Golan, from Childs Hill Primary School in North London, sees Sport Relief as a great way for her pupils to learn about the wider world. She told Primary Times, “Our school believes it is extremely important to support Sport Relief. Our pupils always have lots of fun and work together to help improve the lives of those less fortunate than us. The materials produced by Sport Relief are really useful and inspiring, and help our pupils to see how their contributions can help change the lives of others forever.” 18
