Help your child excel at anything they put their mind to! The first childrenʼs book from Times journalist and bestselling mindset author Matthew Syed will inspire and empower young readers to find the confidence to realise their potential. ʻI loved seeing my daughter race through this book and become inspired to be the best version of her that she could be and work smarter, not harder. It is for any child who might be feeling that everyone is getting places except them, and challenges the thing that holds you back (mostly your own insecurities). My daughter cannot wait to take it into school and share it with her classmatesʼ RACHEL, PARENT REVIEWER

DVD Preview Guide Disney Pixar’s Coco
Coco is about a 12 year old boy with big dreams. Miguel is an aspiring singer and self-taught guitarist who dreams of following in the footsteps of his idol, Ernesto de la Cruz, the most famous musician in the history of Mexico. However, Miguel’s family forbids music. When Miguel unearths a secret from his family’s past—a connection to Ernesto de la Cruz, he rushes to share the news with his family, thinking it will clear the way for him to be a musician. To his surprise, it only makes matters worse. As events unfold on Mexico’s ‘Day of the Dead’, Miguel is forced to team up with a scrappy, streetwise skeleton named Héctor and they set out to find Ernesto de la Cruz, who they believe holds the key to Miguel’s baffling and decidedly unmusical family history. Disney Pixar’s Coco is available on Blu-ray™, DVD and On-Demand from 21 May.

Garden Safari
Both Herne Infant and Junior Schools will be part of Herne & Broomfield Open Gardens Day on Sunday June 10 from 10am to 5pm. Whilst they don’t include stately homes or vast acres, Herne & Broomfield probably have one of the biggest Open Gardens Day in Kent with 20 gardens open. The gardens range from the tiny but perfectly formed to large and lovely, with some ‘still a work in progress’, one even has a listed pond and another is the garden of the former home of Dante Gabriel Rossetti. There are 65 plots at the allotments so there is a lot to see. Entry is by programme which costs £4 a head (accompanied children free). There will be a raffle, art display and plants for sale. Refreshments include Ploughman’s lunches, Curry, Cream Teas and Cakes, available at selected gardens. Proceeds go to the new Herne Centre Project this year. Herne Windmill is open from 2-5pm with a separate admission fee. Please phone 01227 742 700 (office) or 07711 260 021 (on the day) for further details.
You Are Awesome How many times have your children complained because they are no good at sport, can’t do maths or really struggle with exams? If children believe they can’t do something, the chances are they won’t try. But what if they really could get better at anything they tried their hand at? Matthew Syed is setting out to help children excel at just about anything they put their mind to. You Are Awesome inspires and empowers young readers with a toolkit for developing a growth mindset and finding the confidence to realise their potential. The first children’s book from the Times journalist, two-time Olympian and bestselling mindset author Matthew Syed, takes the themes and principles of his award-winning adult novels and recasts them for a 9+ readership. Using real life stories (concerning the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Serena Williams and JK Rowling) Syed demonstrates that success really is earned rather than pre-ordained, and that our abilities can be transformed through practice. With a growth mindset, based on hard work and determination, practice, self-belief and resilience, there’s no reason why anyone can’t achieve (almost) anything. Practical, insightful and positive, this is the book to help children build resilience, embrace their mistakes and grow into successful, happy adults. Matthew Syed’s number one best-selling book You Are Awesome is available for £9.99 online and from all good high street retailers.

A Golden Year for the Goldfinch
You may remember that in the February magazine we told you all about the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch that was coming up. We now have the latest results which have revealed a golden year for the goldfinch along with a number of other small birds after a surge in sightings in gardens across the country. This year, more than 420,000 people across the country took part counting an impressive 6.7 million birds. The event held over the last weekend in January revealed an increase in sightings of smaller birds, such as goldfinch, long-tailed tit and coal tit that can usually be seen visiting gardens and outside spaces in flocks. The influx of these species to our gardens is thought to be linked to the favourable conditions during their successful breeding season in 2017. This combined with the kind autumn and winter weather in the run up to the Birdwatch, will have contributed to the rise in sightings. The warmer temperatures during the autumn and winter will have made it easier for these birds to find food, like insects, in our gardens, which in previous colder winters would have been harder to come by because of frosts and snow. The house sparrow remained at the top of the Big Garden Birdwatch rankings as the most commonly seen garden birds with more than one million recorded sightings throughout the weekend. The starling held down the second spot once more, with the blue tit moving up one spot to round off the top three. Photo credit: John Bridges (rspb-images.com)

Some Simple Projects to Help Bees
Make a bee hotel: With just a plastic bottle and some basic craft supplies, you’ll be able to give bees somewhere to live, sleep and eat. Read the tutorial at www.friendsoftheearth.uk/ bees Grow pollen and nectar-rich plants: Different bee species prefer different flower shapes, so aim for a range from tubular-shaped flowers to open-headed flowers. As well as flowers, try shrubs, herbs, trees, fruit and veg. Spring and autumn flowering bulbs are also great. Growing sunflowers: Encourage children to look after their own plant. The sunflowers could be planted along the edge of a playground or children could take them home to encourage bees in their own garden. No garden? Plant up a pot or window box. Try lavender, heathers, nasturtiums, sunflowers and bulbs like crocuses, as well as herbs. Children can also get involved with school garden projects, or perhaps make a bee hotel as a gift to give to friends and family. Give bees a drink in hot weather: Provide a shallow bowl of clean rainwater with a few pebbles for the bees to land on. Global Outdoor Classroom Day 2018 On 17 May, Global Outdoor Classroom Day returns, with over 1 million children in the UK and Republic of Ireland (ROI) expected to participate in outdoor lessons and play. Following a record 582,000 children in the UK and ROI ditching their desks for the outdoors last year on Outdoor Classroom Day, schools are being challenged to make the event even bigger this year. On the day, teachers will lead a wide variety of lessons including outdoor Maths, English and Science, gardening and eco projects, bioblitzing, den-building, Art and Drama, tree climbing and much more. Last year, children in 70 countries including Brazil, USA, Australia, Tanzania and Thailand all joined forces to celebrate the day. This year, for the first time, they’ll be joined by children in Turkey. The initiative is encouraging 90 minutes of playtime every day in every school around the world and aims to raise awareness of the outdoors as key to improving the health and wellbeing of children. Learning outdoors is proven to increase child activity, enhance problem solving, aid concentration and develop social and team-working skills. For more information and to sign up your school, please visit www. outdoorclassroomday.com.
RSPB Big Schools’ Birdwatch Results
A UK-wide survey of birds in school grounds has revealed the blackbird remains the most common playground visitor. 88% of schools that took part in the RSPB’s Big Schools’ Birdwatch survey reported seeing blackbirds with an average of seven seen per school. Woodpigeons moved up to number two and starlings completed the top three. The survey is part of RSPB’s annual Big Garden Birdwatch, which saw more than 420,000 people taking part over the Birdwatch weekend at the end of January. Rebecca Kerfoot, the RSPB’s Big Schools’ Birdwatch Co-ordinator, told Primary Times, “It’s encouraging that so many children and teachers continue to take part in Big Schools’ Birdwatch. If your class enjoyed taking part in the Birdwatch and you want to do more to help wildlife why not get involved in the RSPB’s new Wild Challenge scheme? Wild Challenge is a great way to get your pupils closer to nature by completing fun and engaging activities. It’s free, open to all and there are things to do at any time of the year. And we’ll reward you as you complete each stage.” By completing activities ranging from mini beast safaris and habitat exploring to making a compost heap and planting for wildlife, schools can log their achievements on the RSPB Wild Challenge website and collect bronze, silver and gold awards. To start your wild adventure in school, please visit www.rspb.org.uk. Photo credit: Ray Kennedy (rspb-images.com)
