School’s Out for Summer - yes that time has finally arrived - the beginning of the long summer holidays. No more crazy mornings with the stress of getting up, dressed and off to school without being late (in my house certainly...), just long sunny, relaxing days hopefully! Dingile has been searching for listings to make this the best ever guide for what to do this summer holiday. Many of the listings are FREE or low cost so do read through them and mark up the ones you want to go to. Our listings are prepared a long time in advance so to make sure you have the latest details do contact the event nearer the time to make sure they haven’t changed. As many of you will know, we publish comprehensive Open Day tables in the September magazine in our Choosing your New School feature. These are aimed at Year 5 and Year 6 pupils but are handy for everyone to think about. Do look out for that magazine which will be published on 2 September. As we are distributed through primary schools this means that this magazine is the last one that our Year 6 readers will receive. We wish you the very best of luck in going to secondary school. Thank you for taking our magazines home, entering our competitions, sending us artwork and all the lovely comments you send us. We will miss you.

House of the Crafty Fox

House of the Crafty Fox is a hidden gem in the heart of the South East. This beautiful shop in Faversham does more than you could imagine, offering a stunning selection of designer homewares and gifts. The excitement of this place doesn’t stop there. You can go alone, with the kids or with the whole family to paint pottery. Their extensive selection of bisqueware has something for every age, taste and budget. We particularly loved the ceramic milk carton and wine glasses. This Aladdin’s cave has much more to offer too – kids’ pottery painting, screen printing or chocolate making birthday parties, school holiday workshops and an after-school club every Wednesday. No kids? No problem! There’s a huge amount for adults too. Workshops include macramé, ceramics, screen printing, calligraphy, silver jewellery making and more. For those “in the know” there is also a monthly evening just for adults to paint or decoupage pottery. You can bring your own bottle, pre-order a sumptuous cheese and antipasti platter and settle in for the evening! This summer, visitors to Howletts Wild Animal Park, near Canterbury are being encouraged to become part of the park’s mission to save endangered animals around the world, as they enjoy wild family days out. Home to the largest herd of African elephants in the UK, visitors can watch the appealing antics of elephant calf, Nusu, as he enjoys playing with his siblings in the paddocks, or spot the baby gorilla, Ikebe, as he explores and plays in his surroundings. There will also be the opportunity to walk with lemurs in the lovely ‘Walking With Lemurs’ garden and get up close to beautiful big cats in their glass fronted, open top enclosures. Throughout the summer break, a variety of free, conservationbased animal talks will be taking place and visitors can learn more about the incredible work carried out by The Aspinall Foundation. Themes will include elephants, rhino, gorillas and big cats and visitors are advised to check the notice boards for times and locations. Plus, visitors can explore Canterbury’s coolest outdoor exhibition Animals of the Ice Age, packed with life-sized prehistoric creatures from a frozen time. Stare at the sabre toothed cats, marvel at the mighty mammoth and be amazed at the sheer size of the giant sloth as you venture through the wooded walkways. Scope Mindful Monsters

Disability equality charity Scope has just launched a unique initiative for Primary Schools which will come into play in the new school year in September. Mindful Monsters Primary School Packs have been cocreated with teachers to include a series of mindful activities to do during the school day. The new school pack has been developed for young children to explore their emotions in a fun and engaging way. With lesson plans and activities for reception, KS1 and KS2 students, Mindful Monsters week brings together four themes, Concentration, Relaxation, Positivity and Creativity. Each activity theme has a Mindful Monster character. Thinky encourages concentration, Giggles looks at positivity, Sparky encourages creativity and Snug helps develop calmness. The Mindful Monsters Week ends on the final day of the week with a party that doubles up as an optional fundraiser for the charity Scope. After signing up, the school will receive everything they need to plan and run an amazing Mindful Monsters Week (at any time of the year they like). While the package is free for schools, a commitment to fundraise for Scope throughout the year is expected. For more information go to www.scope.org.uk

Wise Choice for New Head Master at Kent College

Kent College have announced that Mr Phil Wise has been appointed Senior School Head Master at Kent College following the retirement of Mr Julian Waltho, who has been the Senior Head Master for the last 3 years and who has taught at the school for over 14 years. Mr Wise will take up the position at the start of this Autumn Term in September. He is presently the Pastoral Deputy Head Master at Reading Blue Coat and has experience in both state and independent education. Mr Wise is passionate about pupil safety, happiness and security and the importance of providing different experiences to unlock the potential within individuals. He is always looking to find new activities that enable students to develop the qualities that will stand them in good stead for the rest of their lives. He feels lucky to have had these experiences himself and realises how important they are. Mr Wise told Primary Times, “I am delighted to accept the post of Head Master of the Senior School at Kent College. I feel that the strongly supportive individualised care provided by the Staff for the students is very much in tune with my own values.” The new Head Master and his young family are really looking forward to moving to Canterbury and getting to know the area and the local community. Do you sometimes find it hard to explain to your pupils or your children about the refugee crisis? A new book, Forced to Flee, in which refugee children explain, in their own words and pictures, their thoughts, feelings and experiences about being forced to flee their homes for safety has been produced by UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency. This children’s book focuses on three ongoing refugee situations - Syria, South Sudan and Central America. Forced to Flee explains for a young audience how each crisis came about, why children and their families had to flee, the support that they receive from UNHCR and other organisations and what life is like for them now. Harrowing and heart breaking, the artworks by child refugees vividly highlight the impact that conflict and war have on people’s lives. Forced to Flee is an educational title that will support children’s study of current affairs, raise awareness of the ongoing refugee crisis and help children to be more empathetic by thinking about the lives of other children around the world. Funds raised will contribute to supporting UNHCR and refugees.

Ping Pong Power at Laleham Gap

The Master of Choristers, David Flood, is always pleased to meet and advise parents and their sons.

For years Laleham Gap school has been known for its ping pong prowess. It has had Olympic and Paralympic heroes from the sport in to inspire the pupils. With National Table Tennis Day coming up, the school decided to go early with its big celebratory events, having a Staff v Pupils extravaganza in Primary on one day and in Secondary the next. In Primary pupils held on to the trophy with a very convincing 31: 17 victory. In Secondary things were much tighter. After 64 matches there was only 2 in it with the pupils sneaking it by 30 to 32!
