Halloween Books to Get Children Reading With Halloween just around the corner, what better excuse is there to get your kids reading? Sterling Publishing have released two new children’s picture books, which take classic tales and give them a spooky, Halloween twist. Complete with captivating illustrations and entertaining characters, not only could these books get your children enjoying reading, they could also educate them in some classic titles. For older readers, All-Action Classics have got a great new take on Dracula by Ben Caldwell. Now the evil Count Dracula comes alive in an electrifying graphic novel that follows the vampire from his looming and ominous castle in Transylvania to Victorian London. Michael Mucci translates the tale and Ben Caldwell has created actionpacked images, with meticulous attention paid to the finer details in each piece of art, from facial expressions to the historical accuracy of costuming, architecture and heraldry.Young readers will be completely transfixed. This action packed new version of Dracula is available for £7.99 from Amazon.

For younger readers, there is a Halloween take on a classic with Moldilocks and the Three Scares - A Zombie Tale. Written by Lynne Marie and illustrated by David Rodríguez Lorenzo, this book promises to give the classic fairy tale a new creepy lease of life. Forget Goldilocks and the Three Bears in this delightfully zombie-tastic new version of the popular story. Papa Scare (a monster), Mama Scare (a mummy) and Baby Scare (a vampire) live in a haunted house where they eat finger sandwiches and alpha-bat soup. One night, they go out to walk their dog (a bloodhound, of course) to let their soup cool down. While they’re away, in walks the zombie Moldilocks, looking for food, a chair and a bed that’s just right. Kids will love this hauntingly funny story with its surprise ending. Moldilocks and the Three Scares - A Zombie Tale is available for £12.99 online and from all good high street stores. For more information about either book, please visit www. sterlingpublishing.com.

Make a Pledge for Kent Turtle Doves The RSPB is asking the people of Kent to help them save one of the UK’s most iconic bird species, the turtle dove. Kent is one of the few remaining UK breeding strongholds for the species, but a lack of suitable habitat still means the birds are not breeding as successfully here as they once did. Dedicated farmers and landowners working alongside the RSPB have already helped protect acres of suitable habitat across the county. Many of these sites now have regular returning birds and enjoy the sight of fledgling turtle doves feeding on the specially created plots. Unlike most threatened species, turtle doves can also be regular visitors to gardens, school grounds, community green spaces and even churchyards, provided there is the right food, water and shelter to attract them. Managing a small plot of land, around the same footprint as a family size tent (approx. 5 x 8 foot) can make all the difference for this once familiar Kent species. If you want to pledge a pitch, volunteer for or just find out more about the project visit www.bit.ly/pledgeapitch or search #pledgeapitch on Twitter Photo credit: Ben Andrew

Porchlight is a Kent based homelessness charity which supports local people (and families) across the county. They have just launched a new primary schools fundraiser, Heroes Against Homelessness, which is based around a non-uniform day with each child receiving a superhero mask which they can decorate themselves and dress up as a hero for the day. Participating schools will receive a wide range of educational resources such as KS1 and KS2 lesson plans, a sponsored spell and a writing competition. Porchlight can also visit schools to give age appropriate assembly talks or deliver lessons on the subject of homelessness. Year on year Porchlight’s Rough Sleeper Team is able to help hundreds of people off the streets and into a safe and stable home. With rough sleeper numbers in Kent increasing by 500 % over the last five years, Porchlight really need the local community to help them to continue their work and they believe the youngest generation can have a real and tangible impact. For more information or to sign up, contact Porchlight at getinvolved@porchlight.org.uk, on 01227 813 199 or visit www. porchlight.org.uk/heroes.

Help Fight Childhood Cancers

DIPG or Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma is a tumour of the brain which mainly affects primary school age children between the ages of 5-9. Patients have an average survival of just 9 months. It is such a heart-breaking devastating diagnosis for parents and children. Abbie’s Army, a charity set up by one such parent in Ashford, is currently supporting a petition to the UK Government on behalf of other DIPG families in the UK to ask for additional research into those cancers with the poorest survival rates including DIPG. They have 33,000 online signatures already but need to reach 100,000 to trigger a parliamentary debate. They’d love you to help by signing the petition at https://petition. parliament.uk/petitions/269637.

Tasty Eyeballs Recipe!

These white chocolate covered little cakes are eye-poppingly good. The easiest way to make them is with a cakepop mould, which you can pick up from stores or online.

Ingredients (makes approx. 20 eyeballs) For the cake 70g superfine caster sugar 70g softened butter A few drops of vanilla extract 2 eggs 70g self-raising flour ½ tsp baking powder Cake-pop mould For the decoration Wooden skewers 200g white candy melts/ white chocolate Blue, green, red, and black food colouring gel Horrid hint: if you

don’t have a cake-pop mould, you can bake the cake in a normal pan, break the cake into crumbs then roll with buttercream into balls.

Method 1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C). Using a

wooden spoon, cream the butter and sugar together in a mixing bowl. Add the vanilla extract, then slowly beat in the eggs. Fold in the flour and baking powder.

2. Grease your cake-pop mould with butter. Use a teaspoon to add the mixture to the bottom of the mould, filling it to the top. Place the other side of the mould on top. Follow us on Twitter - @PT_Kent

3. With an adult’s help, put the cake pops in the oven and bake for 20 minutes. Allow to cool a little, then remove the top of the mould and release each cake pop onto a cooling rack. Leave until completely cool. 4. Push a wooden skewer into each cake

pop. Place the candy melts or chocolate in a microwavable bowl and heat in 30 second blasts in the microwave until melted. Dip and roll the cooled cake pops in the candy or spoon it over them until they are nicely coated.

5. Put the skewers upright and leave to

completely set. If you use white chocolate it may take a bit longer to set.

6. Dip a paintbrush into the blue or green food

coloring and paint a circle onto the cake pops. You could also paint some brown if you like. Leave to dry for about an hour. You may need to do more than one coat to get a good effect. Horrid hint: You could use royal icing instead to cover the eyeballs. Dip them in the same way and allow to harden before painting on the food coloring.

7. Add a black pupil with black food coloring, then some fine red veins. Remove from the skewer to finish. For this and plenty more scarily yummy recipes and to find some horribly fun craft activities see The Horrible Craft Book by Laura Minter and Tia Williams, available online and from all good bookshops for £12.99. Thanks to Gill for testing out the recipe for our office too - they were delicious! 14 Oct - 24 Nov ‘19

Cast Announced for Marlowe Theatre Panto

Mother Goose, this year’s pantomime at Marlowe Theatre, will star TV’s Dr Ranj Singh and Olivier Award-winning actor Jenna Russell, alongside local favourites Ben Roddy and Lloyd Hollett. The production, which opens on 28 November, marks Ben’s 10th year in panto. Dr Ranj will be playing Billy Goose, and has already shown a flare for the stage when he swapped his scrubs for sequins as a Strictly Come Dancing contestant. Jenna will play Fairy Goodfeather. The Kent resident is best known for her role as Michelle Fowler in EastEnders. Ben will take the title role of Mother Goose. He was awarded Dame of the Year at The Great British Pantomime Awards for his role in Peter Pan in 2018 and was nominated for Best Ugly Sister for his role in Cinderella in 2018/19. Lloyd will play Charlie in this, his ninth Marlowe pantomime. A Thanet native, Lloyd had variety in his blood from the age of 10, with his stage debut in Oliver! at the Theatre Royal Margate. Since then he’s entertained all over the world with his own unique and original style of comedy wordplay.

Mother Goose will run at The Marlowe Theatre, Canterbury from Thursday 28 November to Sunday 12 January. There will be captioned, BSL-interpreted, audio-described and relaxed performances. For more information, please visit www. marlowetheatre.com or call the box office on 01227 787 787.

Learn Something New Outdoors

Thursday 7 November is Outdoor Classroom Day, a global campaign to celebrate and inspire outdoor learning and play. In 2018, over 3.5 million children worldwide took their lessons outdoors and prioritised playtime.
