At the end of the six week programme, participants are asked to fill in an exit survey and their progress can be followed up after six months. Spring Adventures

Feria de Londres

Returning to the UK for its third year, Feria de Londres is back, with colourful ‘casetas’ popping up in the aptly named Bernie Spain Gardens on the picturesque South Bank, serving up delicious Spanish delights. Taking place from 24 - 26 May, the three-day festival, inspired by Andalusia’s traditional spring fairs, is a resplendent celebration of Spanish cuisine and entertainment. Throughout the weekend, there will be chances for everyone to fully immerse themselves in the celebrations. Flamboyant dancers from London’s best flamenco schools will lead Sevillana dance lessons and flamenco rhythm workshops, while children can enjoy activities like face painting, fan making and kids’ flamenco dance lessons. Alongside the entertainment, a variety of food stalls will be serving an array of tasty treats and Iberian delicacies - try some traditional tapas and flavourful paella from seasoned aficionados. Taking place over one of London’s busiest weekends, Feria de Londres is a unique and free event that invites Londoners and tourists alike to experience first-hand the warmth, vitality and exuberance of Spanish culture. Special Easter Express Rolls into Town

The Epping Ongar Railway is the only steam railway with a direct connection to the tube at Epping. A typical journey time from Stratford is just 26 minutes. As Epping is in Zone 6, for many the off peak fare is just £1.50. When you get to Epping, a traditional London Bus will pick you up from right outside and take you direct to North Weald. The eggs for the hunt have been hidden by the Easter Bunny over a distance the equivalent of 131,579 eggs laid end to end from Ongar Station to Coopersale and you can travel on an Easter Activity Train to find them all. This special ‘Easter Express’ Activity Train will have a magician, a balloon modeller and artists on board to keep the kids happy – whatever the weather outside. All children win a full-sized Easter egg when they present their completed sheets to the Bunny’s representatives. This eggsciting combination of egg hunt, fun on board and the magic of travelling by a steam train and heritage bus must make this one of the best places to take the family this Easter. Advance online ticket prices are adults £15, children £7 and family £36. Epping Ongar Railway Family Railcards are valid too. See the website www.eorailway.co.uk for details.

Guildhall Art Gallery

The Guildhall Art Gallery’s Seen & Heard is an educational and engaging exhibition especially designed for children – featuring 50 Victorian paintings exploring the changing role of children in Victorian Britain. The exhibition runs until 28 April. Easter was an important festival in Victorian England and children celebrated it with zeal and enthusiasm. The tradition of the Easter egg hunt was introduced from Germany to England during the Victorian era and Easter Eggs formed an inseparable part of the celebrations. 12

25 Mar - 12 May ‘19

Easter greeting cards were common and often featured chicks and bunnies (rabbits were extremely popular pets at the time). Decorating eggs was another popular activity for children, who would gift their designs to loved ones. Taking inspiration from the exhibition and traditional Victorian Easter egg designs, visitors to the Guildhall Art Gallery during the spring period are encouraged to create their own decorative eggs in the gallery’s family room – a space dedicated to creating art. On Family Saturday 13 April, there will be a series of special family events. As part of the exhibition offer, all under 12s (who are admitted free) will be allowed to bring an accompanying adult to the exhibition for free that day. Normal admission prices are £8/£6 concessions. Under 12s go free. Photo credit: Royal Academy of Arts, London/John Hammond

Unpack all that London has to offer with our London Curriculum Family Explorer and World of Work Trails.

World of Work Trails

Unpack all our city has to offer with the London Curriculum World of Work Trails and take the family out to explore some exciting areas of London this spring and summer. Last year, the Mayor’s London Curriculum team launched a series of World of Work trails for schools and families. The aim is to inspire children to start thinking about careers in London and what’s on offer in this brilliant city. The trails cover different areas of London – Southwark, Covent Garden, Old Street, Shoreditch and Stratford, with Brixton coming soon! Each trail has a different theme and includes all kinds of activities and information about types of work that children might do when they’re older. Children will learn about jobs from the past, discover the work people do today and imagine what work might be like in the future.

Community teams and leagues are being encouraged to get involved by taking part in Roundersfest, a series of standalone open competitions for local teams that play in local leagues or for new teams formed by groups of friends. There are also open contests for primary, secondary and independent schools. Roundersfest is designed to promote the social and fun aspects of rounders on a national scale to both broaden its appeal to players and encourage more rounders to be played within the Rounders community. Clubs, schools and individuals can find out more and register their interest in taking part by visiting www.roundersengland.co.uk where they’ll find details of the competitions taking place in their area.

New Intake at Anna Fiorentini

The award-winning Anna Fiorentini Theatre and Film School, for 4 -18 year olds, is gearing up for its forthcoming term, as current and prospective students are given the opportunity to audition for competition, Fiorentini’s Got Talent. Former judges have included Joseph Marcell, (Fresh Prince of Bel Air), former Fiorentini student Jayden Jean-Paul-Denis (Hank Zipzer), as well as several prestigious directors and producers. Former Fiorentini’s Got Talent winner, Jermain Jackman, went on just a few weeks later to win The Voice UK.

A few places also remain at Anna Fiorentini’s Easter School. The Easter classes are inspired by the West End’s School of Rock, which one of the school’s students happens to be currently starring in. Use your school tie as a headband, graffiti those old white shirts, get a rock star attitude and for one week only become a rock legend. As an independent drama school, Anna and her team are able to devote time and commitment to ensuring the happiness and progression of each of their students. The school is widely praised and respected for nurturing young talent and instilling confidence, self-esteem and personal well-being in students regardless of whether they want to go into the entertainment industry or not. The school has obligation free taster days this April. For more information, please visit www.annafiorentini.com. For adults there is www.stageandthecity.com.

It is absolutely crucial that all kids know how to swim at a young age. There is water all around us, even if it’s as small as a bathtub. Making sure that your child is comfortable in and around water is essential to their safety. Neuron Pod Science Centre

Neuron Pod, a striking 23-metre long and 10-metre high free-standing structure, has opened its doors as an informal science learning centre at Queen Mary University of London’s Whitechapel campus. The launch was marked by a visit from children from Christ Church Primary School, Brick Lane, who took part in an interactive science education activity about the biology of ‘Snot, Sick and Scabs’, run by Centre of the Cell, Queen Mary’s informal science learning centre. Julian Morant, Headteacher at Christ Church Primary School, told Primary Times, “Science plays an incredibly important part of our curriculum, which is very much supported by the opportunities that Centre of the Cell provides. The children enjoyed the experience immensely, and were inspired by the activities and interactions with experts in the field.” Since opening in September 2009, the centre has delivered a range of unique educational programmes designed to inspire pupils to pursue a career in the sciences and to engage the public with biomedical research, with more than 180,000 people participating in their activities to date. For more information about the centre, please visit www.centreofthecell.org.

3D Printing and Design at WGPS

Primary Times spoke to Mr Easton, Design & Technology Subject Leader at Woodford Green Preparatory School. He told us, “As subject leaders, we are forever being presented with new technologies; it’s sometimes difficult to decide which developments are going to be a success. I was first introduced to 3D printing at BETT 2013, where a host of manufacturers and education technology suppliers were presenting their 3D printers. At the time, I struggled to comprehend how they could effectively be used in schools (particularly primary level). They were very expensive and complicated. However, the manufacturers have reduced prices and made the technology far easier to use. At WGPS we purchased our first 3D printer and it has been an unbelievable success. Software like Tinkercad allows children to design models using a vast inbuilt library of shapes, and websites like www.myminifactory.com and www.thingiverse.com have models available for download.Year 6 have been designing pencil toppers during lessons and using Tinkercad at home they have gone on to design toys, games and other inventions. It’s this engagement and self-motivation to design that is key to success. We are training more staff in CAD and printing software so other years can draft and print their designs. The technology is exciting in the classroom and supports STEM subjects. Children using 3D design packages in primary schools have a real head start for their next school and future. The vast majority of our pupils go on to thrive in academically selective senior schools, building on the passions and foundations set at WGPS. For more information, please see www.wgprep.co.uk or contact the registrar to book a tour of the School.”

Education News

Mrs Balcombe, Inclusion Manager at St Ursula’s, told Primary Times, “Achievement for All works closely with parents, carers, teachers and the individual child to secure the best outcome and attainment for their students through personalised and specific targets. Their unique programme is delivered directly to our school via a highly skilled and trained team of expert coaches and a specialist online support tool called The Bubble.” St Ursula’s has shown a continued commitment and success in improving outcomes for all children across the whole school and that of other children within the local area.
