Paddington’s kindness, tolerance, and perseverance in the face of adversity or marmalade-related mishaps make him the perfect champion for children’s rights. In the UK, Paddington will support UNICEF UK’s campaign around refugee children and will be featured in UNICEF UK’s OutRight campaign. Millions of children around the UK will learn about their own rights and become empowered to speak out in support of the rights of all children. This campaign will feature the story of the small bear who has to leave his home in Darkest Peru and is sent to London with a label around his neck politely asking whoever finds him to ’Please look after this bear. Thank you.’ Paddington finds a new family, home and community, with a little help from his friendly nature, politeness, and ability to stand up for himself when needed by fixing people who have ’forgotten’ how to behave with a ’hard stare’. His story will help children in the UK learn that the right to a home, to be cared for and to an education applies to all children.

Foster carers are provided with comprehensive support and training as well as financial support that recognises experience and professional development. Woodford Pantomine

Jack is back and ready to climb that beanstalk once more! Woodford Pantomime, now incredibly in its 57th year, is proud to present Jack and the Beanstalk at the Sir James Hawkey Hall. Known locally as the friendly panto, a warm welcome awaits young, old and everyone in between. There are baddies to boo, heroes to cheer and everybody’s favourite, Daisy the cow. Each year an enthusiastic band of committed volunteers transform an empty hall into a world where fairies grant wishes, princes save the day and every tale ends with a “happily ever after”. Along with all the fun, money is raised for a children’s charity. Last year Woodford Panto were thrilled to have raised over £1450 for Scope. A special performance was laid on for the families of children with disabilities that make accessing the theatre difficult. It was a moving and memorable experience for all. Woodford Panto look forward to entertaining you with singing, dancing and truly awful jokes in the great tradition that is Pantomime. So leave your inhibitions at the door and join in for a fun filled few hours. For more information, be sure to visit www. woodfordpantomime.co.uk.

They were also the first panto to be nominated for a prestigious Olivier Award (the theatre equivalent of the Oscars). Time Out described Robin Hood, a previous production, as ‘One of the finest pantomimes in London’ PIERS TORDAY JOHN MASEFIELD This really is a show not to be 1 DECEMBER 2017 - 6 JANUARY 2018 missed. Discover Dogs at ExCel

Kicking off October Half Term with a bark, London’s biggest dog event, Eukanuba Discover Dogs is returning to ExCeL London on the 21 and 22 October, offering visitors the chance to meet and greet over 200 different pedigree breeds. With over 26,000 visitors last year, the show will feature popular breeds such as the Labrador Retriever as well as unusual breeds like the Hungarian Puli. There will also be a special area dedicated to the Kennel Club’s vulnerable native breeds such as the Dandie Dinmont Terrier and the Otterhound, whose numbers are declining. There will be lots of different activity rings with competitions and displays taking place, such as the Scruffts semi-final, the family cross breed dog of the year competition. Also new for this year is the Young Kennel Club Interactive activity ring, providing the opportunity for younger visitors to have a go at agility, learn to train a dog and take part in an obstacle course with some of the ‘professional’ dogs at the event. After learning how to train a dog, children can visit the new kids’ corner, filled with activities to keep kids entertained - this brilliant family day out cannot be missed! Steam and Scream with the Epping Ongar Railway

The Epping Ongar Railway will be running its ‘Ghost Train’ from its re-named North Weird Station to and from Ongar. Until 1994, this was part of the Central Line but for 3 zany days in October it will be taken over by ghouls, zombies and other scary creatures who would like to invite you to join them. The Halloween Specials have grown in popularity and are now a regular feature at the Railway. The staff and volunteers are constantly looking to ensure that the ‘Ghost Train’ experience remains good fun and this year is no different. The buses pick up passengers from right outside Epping Tube station and whisk you to North Weird station. Once there, you’ll find children’s magic shows, a silent disco (come along to find out what that is!), a bar, Halloween games and other spooky fun. Of course there’s also a full-sized Ghost Train to take you to Ongar and its gruesome graveyard – if you dare! If you choose, you can start your journey at Ongar too. Trains will be running on 28, 29 and 31 October. Children’s fares start from £10 whilst adults pay from £13. To find out more information, be sure to visit the EOR website www. In April, pupils and staff from Northbury Primary School were distraught to find their beloved organic vegetable garden burnt to the ground. Their shed, greenhouse and raised beds had all been incinerated, destroying pupils’ gardening equipment and killing their lovingly tended crops. These all needed to be replaced. The Soil Association Food for Life quickly set up a Go Fund Me page to raise funds to help the school, who have achieved their Food for Life Silver award. They exceeded their target of £5,000 by raising £5,670 and in September the cheque was presented to Northbury Primary during a special gardening event. Northbury Primary School is in an area of high deprivation in London with many pupils having special educational needs. The garden provided over 900 children, their families and the local community with a little green haven, giving them vital access to outdoor space and the opportunity to enjoy growing and eating fresh, organic produce. The garden has also been central to improving the health and diets of pupils at the school through the Soil Association’s Food for Life programme (www.foodforlife.org.uk) and will be instrumental to Northbury as they work towards achieving the prestigious Gold Award.
