No Ordinary Protest

Over the course of one year, artist Mikhail Karikis has collaborated with a group of local 7 to 8 year-old school children to create a new work, No Ordinary Protest, especially for the Whitechapel Gallery. Whitechapel Gallery’s Children’s Commissioning Programme offers young audiences the opportunity to create a new work of art with a leading international contemporary artist. This work is then exhibited within the main galleries. No Ordinary Protest is inspired by The Iron Woman (1993), a children’s science fiction novel by the British writer Ted Hughes. In this story, the world’s seas, lakes and rivers have become majorly polluted. Through the figure of a female superhero, the Iron Woman, children are gifted with a mysterious power – the ability to hear a supernatural noise, transmitted by touch, which echoes the collective howl and suffering of creatures affected by pollution. No Ordinary Protest is devised with students from Mayflower Primary School in Tower Hamlets. In a series of workshops, Karikis invited the children to reflect on the environmental themes, to imagine the enigmatic noise heard by the children in the story. Improvising with vocalisations, musical instruments and toys, the group conducted experiments in which noise and vocals took on visual forms. In the resultant film and installation, on show in the gallery until 6 January, Karikis echoes the narrative of The Iron Woman as an ecofeminist parable on the power of sound to effect physical and sociopolitical change. Through group debate, the children explore their responsibility towards the environment, and the urgent need for solidarity with all creatures. The installation is on view until 6 January.

Instant Ice Cream

This awesome Instant Ice Cream recipe comes from Dr Michelle Dickinson’s The Kitchen Science Cookbook. Dickinson has made it her life’s mission to make science and engineering accessible for all. This latest recipe looks at the scientific principle of phase change and takes 10 minutes.

Equipment and Ingredients

• One small zip-resealable sandwich bag • One large zip-resealable plastic bag • 120ml (1/2 cup) cream or full fat milk. • 12.5g (1 Tbsp) sugar • A few drops of vanilla or other flavouring of your choice • 3-7 cups of ice • 75g (5 Tbsp) salt

Instructions

1. Add the cream, sugar, and vanilla to the small bag and seal, ensuring that any excess air is released. 2. Place the ice, the salt and the cream-filled bag into the larger bag and seal. 3. Vigorously shake the large bag over a sink for approximately five minutes. Stop when the cream has started to freeze and turn into a solid. 4. Remove the small bag and quickly rinse off the salt solution with cold water. 5. Pour the ice cream into a bowl, add your favourite toppings and enjoy eating your newly frozen dessert.

Explanation

Ice cream is an emulsion, or a mixture of two liquids (water and fats) which do not normally mix together. To make ice cream, the milk or cream mixture needs to change its state from a liquid to a solid. If the mixture was simply placed straight into the freezer, the water part would freeze first, forming large, crunchy ice crystals. Ice cream tastes better when it is creamy rather than crunchy, so the goal in ice cream making is to create the smallest ice crystals possible. By vigorously shaking the bag, any large ice crystals that may be forming are broken up into smaller crystals, resulting in a smooth and creamy ice cream. The freezing point of ice is lowered by the addition of salt, so it starts to melt. As this ice melts it draws heat energy from its surroundings - including the cream mixture enclosed in the smaller bag - cooling it enough to cause the liquid cream emulsion to freeze, changing it from a liquid to a solid and forming ice cream.

The Kitchen Science Cookbook is perfect for parents and children to enjoy together. It’s packed full of fun experiments families can do at home. Dr Dickinson’s The Kitchen Science Cookbook is available online and from all good high street stores for £19.99.

Christmas at Stratford Circus Arts Centre

The most fearsome creature that never was, but is, takes to the stage this Christmas at Stratford Circus Arts Centre. Internationally acclaimed theatre company Tall Stories’ The Gruffalo, based on the much loved picture book by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler, is an enchanting show combining songs, laughter and storytelling with just the right amount of scary fun. A mouse took a stroll through the deep dark wood. Searching for hazelnuts, Mouse meets the cunning Fox, the eccentric old Owl and the party mad Snake. Will the story of the terrifying Gruffalo save Mouse from ending up as dinner for these hungry woodland creatures? After all, there’s no such thing as a Gruffalo, is there? Olivia Jacobs and Toby Mitchell from Tall Stories told Primary Times, “Back in 1999, when we asked Julia and Axel if we could adapt their then little-known book The Gruffalo for the stage, we had no idea how things would turn out. The original 2001 tour involved three actors in a car (not even with a stage manager) touring to schools and small venues. To go from there to the West End, Broadway and the Sydney Opera House has been quite a journey.” Set to a wonderfully catchy score with original music and lyrics, The Gruffalo is a must-see show which continues to entertain audiences the world over, and is suitable for ages 3+. Catch it at Stratford Circus Arts Centre from Wednesday 28 November – Monday 24 December. For full times and ticket prices, please visit www. stratford-circus.com.

Choosing your New School with The definitive guide to open days for that all important decision.

A Pull Out and Keep Feature

Choosing your new School

Choosing your New School Starting to look at secondary schools? We give you the lowdown on what to do Applying for secondary school is one of the most important decisions you are going to make because it’s likely to have a huge impact on your child’s future, way beyond the school gates. There’s some essential ‘homework’ to be done before you make that all important choice and you must make sure you know the deadlines for applying via your local authority. For some, it won’t be an issue, as catchment area rules determine your first or other choices, decided by postcode or feeder school. However, for those of you who can choose, the task can seem a daunting one. To help you through the process, follow our tips for some forward planning and get the most out of a school open day.

Expectations for behaviour

Make sure you query the levels of discipline that are imposed, such as the consequences for late/absent work, unruly behaviour and the uniform code. Feel free to raise serious disciplinary matters such as bullying and how it is handled. The responses should give you a good indication of what is tolerated at the school.

Students in action

As you’re on the school tour, observe the children in school, as they will often be a great indicator of a school’s ethos. You’ll get to see how children treat each other and how they interact within the classroom and corridors. Are they happy? Do they seem confident and animated? Are teachers welcoming and friendly, are you getting the feeling of a warm, open attitude?

Make a Shortlist of Schools

Firstly, make a shortlist of the schools that your child could attend by looking at nearby local authority’s websites or visit www.education.gov.uk. Make sure you check their admission rules carefully to ensure your child is eligible for a place. You also need to be happy that your child can travel to school easily and that siblings, if relevant, could go to the same school. After that, it’s time to take a look at the facts and figures to make a comparison on paper.

Head to the Open Day

Life outside the classroom

Once you’re satisfied with your shortlist and you’ve done your homework, it’s time to do the most important thing of all and visit the schools.Nothing beats going to see the school for yourself, so get the most out of your visit with our tips and ideas.

Essential learning doesn’t just happen in the classroom. Look out for interesting extra-curricular activity posters on the noticeboards. If your child likes sports but isn’t an ‘A’ team candidate, will they still get to participate? If there are after school clubs, check what they are and when they take place.

The grand tour

Peace of mind

Most open days will feature a pupil led tour. Ask lot of questions and you’ll hear all sorts of interesting things from your friendly guide that don’t feature in the prospectus. Talk to as many pupils and parents as you can manage on the tour for maximum feedback. Don’t forget to take in the atmosphere and environment of the school, to get a feel for whether your child would be happy in these surroundings.

The Headteacher’s talk

Don’t miss out on the Head teacher’s talk, usually given at specified times on open days/evenings. You’ll find out what priorities and emphasis the Head gives to various aspects of their school, and will be able to see if these aspirations match your family’s own. The Head should come across as genuine, inspiring and bursting with pride for both school and pupils, as well as being very clear about the school’s achievements and goals.

3 Sept - 7 Oct 2018

The switch to secondary school is a big one and communication will be key. It is important to know how to contact staff if you have a problem or concern. Find out how contact details such as teacher names and emails are provided, and whether the first point of contact should be via telephone or email. It’s important to see how easy it is to contact school staff in case of an emergency. Information about good pastoral care should be plentiful as it’s an essential ingredient for a happy school life.

It’s an open day, so keep an open mind

Remember this is about your child, not you. Try not to be influenced by your own educational experience as it may not be relevant. Find out what your child really thinks and don’t hesitate to take advice from trusted teachers who you feel know your child best – you may be surprised by what they tell you. In the end, trust your instincts, find the right environment for them to be happy, then sit back and watch them flourish.

Choosing your new School

Norlington School Norlington has long been acknowledged as a high performing school being featured regularly in the top 5% of schools nationally and recognised on three occasions by the Minister of State for Schools for being in the top 100 schools for student academic progress. 2018 GCSE results looked even better with over a third of all exams sat achieving grades 7, 8 or 9. Not only do Norlington students flourish academically, they also participate enthusiastically in many extracurricular activities which has led to significant success in borough, county and nationwide sporting and academic competitions. Outstanding sporting success continued in cricket with Norlington reaching the London Cup finals for the second year in succession in addition to several borough successes. Local dominance in Table Tennis continues with the school winning the regional competitions in every age group. Norlington’s STEM credentials were further enhanced when several young mathematicians finished third in the London wide ‘Count on Us’ challenge. Norlington also won the previous two rounds. In the arts, Norlington boys performed on the stage of a West End theatre. Norlington is well known in the area for developing leaders. This included sixth form student Zain Hussain travelling to New York to speak at the United Nations as part of its 2030 agenda for ‘Sustainable Development’. Mr Hernandez, Principal of Norlington School, told Primary Times, “Norlington is a unique school where the family ethos is the foundation upon which students can go on to achieve great things. Staff and students work tirelessly to realise the school’s aim - to become the number one boys’ school in the country. Our boys deserve it.” For more information about Norlington, please visit www.norlington. net.

The school encourages outstanding academic progress and personal development offering an all-round education for all pupils which consists of excellent academic teaching and learning, and extensive opportunities outside the classroom encompassing everything from sport, music, art and drama to their huge range of co-curricular clubs and activities. Their boys and girls (more than 1,300 in equal proportion) are taught in singlesex classes from the ages of 7-16 and in a co-educational environment in the Pre-Preparatory school and Sixth Form. Forest believe this combination of singlesex and mixed educational opportunities, the diamond structure, gives pupils the best of all worlds. Choosing your new School

The school pride themselves on getting children to be more independent in their learning and therefore adapted the curriculum to give pupils the opportunity to undertake a more ‘hands-on’ approach. Woodford Green are fortunate to have a fully equipped Science room where all lessons take place. The children get to experiment in an environment filled with the necessary resources for each area of the Science curriculum. This allows teachers to be passionate about teaching Science and gives them the freedom to let the children lead the lessons through investigating, experimenting and forming their own opinions.

Choosing your new School

Raine’s Foundation School Raine’s Foundation School is one of the oldest schools in London. They have played an important role in the East End for nearly 300 years. Developing a sense of community is pivotal to the schools ethos. As they move further into the 21st century they are developing a community spirit to ensure Raine’s Foundation School is a school for local children, just as it was when the school was established in 1719. Rob Hullett, Headteacher, told Primary Times, “I fully understand how important

it is to you as parents and carers to select the right secondary school for your son or daughter. You will want the school to provide your child with opportunities to develop socially and academically in an environment which is challenging, caring and supportive. Raine’s Foundation school is able to offer these opportunities. Raine’s offers something different too. We are a smaller than average secondary school. This means pupils are recognised as individuals, enabling support to be tailored to their needs. Raine’s is truly comprehensive and fully inclusive. We are also developing our links beyond our immediate neighborhood with links and visits to Europe, America the Middle East and China. I look forward to welcoming you to our school and invite you to visit us at one of our open evenings.”

Anything Nose in Schools Next March Red Nose Day is back for 2019, and Comic Relief is calling on all teachers to clear their school’s diary on Friday 15 March to take part in the epic fundraising extravaganza. Red Nose Day is a time in the school year that students remember for a lifetime - donning a nose, dressing up and coming up with all kinds of wacky ways to raise funds for a good cause. It isn’t just an exciting opportunity to take part in a fantastic day of fundraising. Red Nose Day also gives students a great chance to learn more about the world around them and how Comic Relief is working to support vulnerable people both at home in the UK and around the globe. To help schools get red-y for a day of fundraising and events, teachers can now pre-order a free fundraising pack tailored specifically for primary schools. The packs are bursting with ideas – fundraising guides, posters, stickers and balloons – to help ensure schools will have an unforgettable time. Comic Relief also offers school curriculum materials and videos that teachers can use to help raise awareness of the world around them and those living incredibly tough lives. To have these tips, tools and classroom ideas land in your school’s post box this January, pre-order your pack now – just head to www.rednoseday.com/primarytimes. Autumn Adventures

Autumn Adventures

Autumn Adventures

The Race for Doggett’s Coat and Badge is the world’s oldest continually competed sporting event, starting in 1715. This incredible rowing race is competed in every year by apprentice river workers on the Thames. Taking place at Guildhall Yard, there will be a series of exhibitions from 6 23 September and the race itself will take place on 4 September. Composer and curator Iain Chambers will return to fill the atmospheric South Bascule Chamber at Tower Bridge with a brand-new programme of works, including commissioned spoken word performances and an immersive sound walk exploring London’s greatest hidden space. Events will take place from 20 – 23 September. Totally Thames 2018 will run from Saturday 1 – Sunday 30 September. For more information, please visit www.totallythames.org or call 020 7928 8998. Spanish Flu at the Florence Nightingale Museum

A new exhibition marking 100 years since the deadliest pandemic in human history will open at the Florence Nightingale Museum on Friday 21 September. The exhibition highlights the devastating global impact of Spanish Flu, and the role of women – both professional nurses and ordinary women - in caring for victims. The Spanish flu was a deadly influenza pandemic which struck in the autumn of 1918, just as World War I was drawing to a close. It is estimated that Spanish flu infected half a billion people worldwide and killed 50-100 million, significantly more than the war itself.

Alligator Bridge, through light-up caves and past the Shy Cat Tree. Join the dragon in his puppet theatre castle or ascend the stairs to captain the Observatron and slide into a cloudy weather station. Can you spot The Gruffalo? Can you Squash and Squeeze around a life-sized cow? Take a trip into the brilliant 3-D technicolour world of the best loved children’s author, Julia Donaldson and illustrator Axel Scheffler, with the UK’s first immersive exhibition of their wonderful work. What’s that flying overhead, could it be Zog? Be The Smartest Giant in Town, climb through The Highway Rat’s cave, rock hop through the Monkey Puzzle jungle, discover the underwater worlds of Tiddler and The Snail and the Whale and take your seat for the ride of your life with The Room on the Broom. And great news – the display has been extended to January so there’s still time to go along. It is advised that you book ahead though as it’s very popular. Find out more at www.discover.org.uk.

Have a Smashing Time

Unusually, compared to seasonal flu outbreaks, healthy young adults were particularly at risk. Victims suffered some truly gruesome symptoms, including explosive nosebleeds and distinctive blue tinged skin caused by a lack of oxygen as their lungs filled with fluid and pus. When Spanish flu struck in 1918, doctors were at a loss to treat or prevent it. The only thing that seemed to help was good nursing, so it often fell to women, both professional nurses and ordinary women caring for their families, to care for the victims. The exhibition will be supported by a free downloadable resource pack for schools and a ‘pop up’ touring exhibition which will enable audiences beyond London to see core and digital content. Your children will have a smashing time at Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre, Stratford. If you’re looking for a fun activity for the kids to take part in, then tennis could be just the thing. With a range of courses led by friendly qualified coaches, they’ll be swinging that racquet with confidence in no time at all.

Kids for a Quid in September and October

Back to School means great value fares when kids can travel for a quid on most of our operating days in September and October.*

The Tusk Rhino Trail

Did you know that Rhinos have roamed London before. In the Paleolithic period, around 60,000 years ago when England was a cold, dry desert, the woolly rhinoceros was common. Well they’re coming again! Not so woolly this time and maybe not exactly roaming. The Tusk Rhino Trail is a London wide art installation to raise public awareness of the plight of the rhino. The sculptures will be displayed at a selection of iconic London sites including Trafalgar Square, Covent Garden and Carnaby Street and the event will culminate with the celebration of World Rhino Day on 22 September. All 21 rhinos can be spotted and trail maps are available online at www.tusk.org. Follow #tuskrhinotrail for all the latest news. Our picture shows the rhino designed by Axel Scheffler. DIY Circus Lab for Kids

This year the UK is celebrating 250 years of circus, and a new circus book is out to celebrate this. DIY Circus Lab for Kids by Jackie Leigh Davis gives families everything they need to produce their own circus. Dive into the youth circus community and learn about juggling, acrobatics, manipulations, balance and clowning. The book opens with a do-it-yourself prop making class, and provides enough homemade equipment to get you started on some fun circus basics. Rising circus stars will then move on to lessons in toss juggling, flower sticks, poi, human pyramids and how to move on to even more tricks and skills. And best yet, kids will see how to combine skills into an act, and acts into a show. DIY Circus Lab for Kids also includes the Circademic Corner and safety check boxes whenever skilllearning requires adult supervision. Primary Times have five copies of DIY Circus Lab for Kids to give away to five lucky readers. For your chance to win, simply tell us how many years the circus has been in the UK. See the bottom of this page for details of how to enter.
