Inspiring Engineering Super Heroes

The Government’s Year of Engineering is assembling Marvel Super Heroes, including Iron Man and The Hulk, to launch an exciting new partnership with the iconic comic brand. Marvel is the latest big name to join the campaign, which aims to transform perceptions of engineering among children age 7-16 and encourage more young people from different backgrounds to consider careers in the profession. Young people are being encouraged to take the More Heroes Needed Aptitude Test to help them find out which Super Hero qualities they share with these legendary characters; they can then discover how those strengths could help them thrive in the world of engineering. Year of Engineering Minister Nusrat Ghani joined children from the Berger Primary School in Hackney and a team of real-life Super Heroes – including a female army engineer turned weight-lifter, and an expert in comic book science – at the Marvel Avengers S.T.A.T.I.O.N, an immersive new Marvel exhibition in East London, to launch the partnership. The new aptitude test is part of a wide range of resources for parents and teachers on the Year of Engineering website, which also features inspiring ideas to help keep kids busy and entertained over half term. To take the test with your kids, head to www.moreheroesneeded. com.

This year the Cleft Lip and Palate Association (CLAPA) is celebrating its 40th Birthday, and they’d love you and your family to get involved in celebrating too! In early pregnancy, different parts of a baby’s face develop and then join together. If they don’t join properly, the baby is born with a gap or ‘cleft’. This can be in the top lip, the roof of the mouth, or both. It has no single cause, and can happen in any pregnancy. One in 700 babies is born with a cleft. That’s around 100 babies every month in the UK alone. These babies and their families can face a gruelling 20 year treatment pathway involving multiple surgeries to address the problems caused by a cleft, including speech and hearing difficulties. Sadly, stigma, prejudice and isolation are experienced by many children and young people growing up with a cleft. For 40 years, CLAPA has worked to improve the lives of children, families and adults affected by cleft lip and palate all over the UK. The charity aims to be there every step of the way with personal, local support at the moments when people need it the most. To keep doing this, CLAPA needs your help. Whether it’s holding a bake sale in your school hall or staff room in aid of CLAPA, spreading the word at work and with friends or hosting a birthday party for CLAPA and collecting donations, having fun with your fundraising this year can help ensure CLAPA is here to help the UK cleft community for many years to come. Interested in getting involved? Contact CLAPA’s friendly fundraising team at fundraising@clapa.com or call 020 7833 4883 to plan your activity. You can find out more about CLAPA’s work by visiting www.clapa.com

101 Dalmatian Street

An exciting new series 101 Dalmatian Street, is coming to the Disney Channel. It will introduce a whole new generation of children to the wonderful, spotty world of Dalmatians, inspired by Dodie Smith’s timeless 1956 novel and Walt Disney’s classic 1961 film, 101 Dalmatians. The new series has been reimagined for the 21st Century and is set in modern day London in the borough of Camden. The series follows the adventures of eldest siblings Dylan and Dolly, their parents Doug and Delilah, and 97 younger puppies, whose names also begin with ‘D’, in an epic comedy about family life, multiplied one hundred and one. Disney are looking forward to the forthcoming launch by airing a series of BTVP shorts during half term (18 -21 February) at 7.55am. In the first of these, Muddy Pups, Dylan tries to clean up whilst Diesel has his heart set on digging, spreading dirt and mess all over Dylan’s clean floors. So reserve your ‘spot’ on the sofa and get ready to watch.

Barnardo’s carers,Viv, 78 and husband Ken, 86 from Kent, have been providing short break foster care for teenagers since the 1980’s. When asked why they foster,Viv said, “I just want to try and make the children happy. I don’t do anything special; just give them a normal family life. It’s a really satisfying job and the rewards come when they have left care and keep in touch with us. They become one of the family.” Barnardo’s social workers work passionately to help find loving homes for children and young people. They offer a wide range of foster care options where the length of time a child stays with you can vary from one night to a few years. Whether you are single or married, male or female, a homeowner or renting, straight, lesbian, gay, trans or bisexual, Barnardo’s believe you can be a foster carer and so should you. When you decide to foster with Barnardo’s, you will receive a generous fee and allowance, 24 hour support, certified training and much more. For more information, contact BarnardosFosteringSouthEast@ barnardos.org.uk, call 0800 027 7280 or visit www.barnardos.org.uk/ fostering.

Are Children Key to a Healthier London? 28 Schools from across London have been celebrated by Transport for London (TfL) for their work championing active and safe travel on the journey to school.

As part of TfL’s STARS (Sustainable Travel: Active, Responsible, Safe) schools programme, the winners received awards for being the highest performing of around 1500 participating London primary and secondary schools in reducing car use, increasing walking and cycling and using public transport.

News

Three Decades (and Counting)!

The overall best regional schools included Gilbert Colvin Primary in Redbridge who have worked incredibly hard this year with their Stripey Strider campaign to get a zebra crossing outside their school. Herne Hill Primary also impressed by devising numerous fun and interactive travel initiatives including a Clean Air Day and inviting external speakers to speak to pupils. St Mary Magdalene School in Greenwich created a three-part Spokestars initiative that develops cycling skills from the bottom up. Stars is now in its twelfth year, and accreditation to the programme has grown from 180 schools in 2007 to 1,465 in 2018. Schools are judged on their success in changing travel behaviour with each school awarded a Bronze, Silver or Gold accreditation. This year 686 schools were awarded a Gold accreditation - more than ever before. For more details on the Stars accreditation scheme, please visit www.tfl.gov.uk. Photo credit: Transport for London

World Book Day 2019: Save the Date World Book Day, this year on 7 March, is the world’s biggest annual celebration of children’s books, dedicated to celebrating the benefits of reading for pleasure for everyone, everywhere. It is sponsored by National Book Tokens and supported generously each year by the publishing industry, book trade, authors and illustrators. Every year, with a host of publishers, World Book Day curates a list of bespoke £1 books for children and young people across the UK and Ireland, which they can choose for free at their local bookshop or supermarket using their £1 World Book Day book token. Catering for all age groups, from toddler to teen, the list has been created to appeal to the widest possible range of children and young people, tastes and abilities. The list brings together exclusive new stories by much loved authors Malorie Blackman, Patrice Lawrence, Frank Cottrell-Boyce and Waterstones Children’s Laureate, Lauren Child. Designed to be as accessible as possible, the list is available in braille, large print and audio formats and there are two additional books in Welsh: Na Nel! by Meleri Wyn James and Cyw by Anni LlynY Lolfa. Share a Story is the theme at the heart of a 3-year World Book Day campaign, encouraging parents and carers to go beyond dressing up to read and share stories with their children for ten minutes every day. Sharing stories together – anywhere, anytime – for just ten minutes a day has long-lasting effects on a child’s future. World Book Day aims to inspire new reading habits for adults and children, underlining just how important this shared time is. World Book Day 2019 will launch a rebranded events programme – ‘Share a Story Live’ – to bring major activities into National Literacy Trust hubs nationwide. Central to generating major regional excitement and bringing books to life for children, the tour is the ‘living embodiment’ of World Book Day. The day also sees children bringing books to life through an array of organised events and activities in schools, bookshops, libraries and at home. A Most Popular Attraction for Families

The Epping Ongar Railway proved to be a very popular destination for thousands of children and their families last year when the Railway carried a record 41,804 passengers. These were boosted by impressive attendances at Christmas which saw almost 14,000 people riding on Santa’s Special special train in December. Earlier in the year, over 1,100 people visited to see Peppa Pig and her brother George. The Railway’s Epping Fryer ‘Fish and Chip’ specials have also proved to be very popular, particularly the new lunchtime specials introduced in October. The fun continues in February where children’s fares will be reduced to £1 as part of its half term ‘Kids for a Quid’ offer (16, 17, 20, 22, 23, 24 February). Future highlights include the county’s longest Easter Egg Hunt and further visits by Peppa Pig and her brother George. Later in the year the Epping Ongar Railway will be marking the 25 years of private running since passenger services were withdrawn in 1994.

Education News Sport at WGPS - Problem Solving and Creativity

Primary Times spoke to Mr Southey, Director of Sport at Woodford Green Prep School. He told us, “Problem solving and creativity are not necessarily the words that come to mind when thinking about sport, but at Woodford Green Prep School we aim to engage and challenge children in

12

4 Feb - 24 Mar ‘19

these areas as part of their sporting development. This term we have explored creativity and challenged the pupils in their thinking, as well as developing their athletic ability during their gymnastics lessons. Instead of ‘telling’ the pupils what we wanted them to achieve, every learner was treated as an individual and allowed time within the lesson to discover movement for themselves. This phase of the lesson provided an opportunity to be creative and solve a problem. By placing a problem in front of the pupil it really focuses them on ‘what can I do to solve this’ and become independent thinkers instead of learners who require adult intervention. The results were amazing. We had pupils trying and exploring movements we had not even thought of, with movements more advanced and technical than I had expected from them! As all children grow and develop into adulthood, creativity and problem solving skills are going to be needed in abundance. Through sport, creativity can flourish. If we allow children to explore this now it will aid their creative and problem solving brains as adults. We all have this innate capacity so let’s use it. What’s more, it helps develop our talent in sport even further. The vast majority of pupils at WGPS go on to thrive in academically selective senior schools, often taking with them a love of sport as well as a width of experiences, such as in music, art and drama. For more information about WGPS and their excellent 11+ results, visit their website www.wgprep. co.uk or contact the Registrar to book a tour of the School.”

RIBA Architecture Programme for Schools The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) has launched the National Schools Programme – the UK’s first nationwide architectural learning programme for schoolchildren. The programme partners schools with expertly-trained architects (RIBA Architecture Ambassadors), who volunteer their time to deliver bespoke and creative, curriculum-linked

workshops for children aged 4-18. The programme is free of charge to schools, thanks to the generosity of its supporters. The RIBA’s National Schools Programme will help thousands of children to explore and understand the built environment – its impact on people and communities, how it is shaped and developed and why good design is important. The aim of the programme is to inspire a generation and fill them with the confidence, knowledge and skills to make their voices heard. The launch of a comprehensive nationwide programme follows a successful pilot phase that engaged a diverse range of 18,000 young people, many from disadvantaged backgrounds, in over 200 schools across England. The pilot was delivered by 349 Architecture Ambassadors from 170 architecture practices. The RIBA’s National Schools Programme offers a bespoke variety of workshops, matched to the individual needs, resources and interests of the school. Projects can involve exploring the local area and understanding key issues affecting the local community. Projects in the pilot phase have also included huge large-scale models made of bamboo and proposals for creating ‘a city of the future’. For more information, please visit www.architecture.com.

Mas de Saribou, France Nestled in a crease between the mountains of the southern Ardèche lies this four bedroomed modern eco-villa - the perfect hideaway for those looking to reconnect with nature. Each morning guests can awake to the sound of a freshwater spring trickling past your window, and to a glorious view of soaring mountain peaks. It’s a good way to start the day. Though totally private, Mas de Saribou is tucked away in the rambling gardens of a 400-year-old farmhouse, where owners Annick and Michel live. Details of the villa’s decor are a nod to the farm’s history - handmade wooden bedheads were once the roofbeams of the old barn, and a pair of sinks are crafted from ancient chestnut wood.Annick and Michel still harvest chestnut groves, as well as figs and an orchard of apple trees. There’s also an organic vegetable and herb garden which you can plunder for your dinners. Spend mornings chilling by the freshwater pool then tear yourselves away for adventures galore in the Ardèche. Return home to the setting sun and the stunning open fireplace. This is a paradise for kids, who can run free in the extensive gardens. The area is ripe with outdoor activities, including kayaking, canyoning and wild swimming. Day trip to the source of the Loire River, located at the top of Mont Gerbier de Jonc, then on your way down, go wild swimming in the turquoise Lac d’Issarles. Closer to home, play tennis on the courts next door or chill in the garden. Swing in the hammock, stroll among the roses, splash in the stream, and swim in the freshwater pool. In a region bursting with exceptional fresh produce, self-catering is a joy.The indoor kitchen is fully equipped with everything you could possibly need (even two huge teapots), along with basic ingredients, coffee and a huge selection of teas. There is also an outdoor kitchen which is smaller but very well equipped and ideal for prepping barbecues. An outdoor table means you can have lazy summer evenings on the terrace. There are numerous regional markets and great restaurants a 10-15 minutes’ drive away, as well as a bakery and grocery store in the village five minutes walk away.
