I’m typing this thinking warm thoughts of May but looking out the window all I’m seeing is puddles and a grey sky. Roll on the sunshine. It seems to have been a long cold winter and I think everyone is clamouring for the beginning of summer.

You Are Awesome How many times have your children complained because they are no good at sport, can’t do maths or really struggle with exams? If children believe they can’t do something, the chances are they won’t try. But what if they really could get better at anything they tried their hand at? Matthew Syed is setting out to help children excel at just about anything they put their mind to.

My Salah Mat

My Salah Mat is a unique concept in teaching Muslim children how to pray. Its inventor, Kamal Ali, thought of the idea while pondering on how his own son had struggled with the various positions of Salah, such as placing the nose and hands on the floor correctly. Then it came to him that if there were pictures on the prayer mat, this would provide a guide and help children to understand what to do. Kamal has a great deal of support for the project, and recently received a message on LinkedIn which simply said, “I wish I had this when I was a child.” He explained how this made him realise that he was focusing so much on the functions of the mat, while the important thing is that the My Salah Mat makes praying attractive and enjoyable for children. It makes them want to learn in a way that isn’t daunting. It ensures a positive, rather than negative, experience. My Salah Mat also makes it easy to learn how to pray properly, and will hopefully ensure lasting memories, which is essential, because childhood experiences shape who we are as adults. It has become a must have tool for parents and teachers, a way of introducing one of the pillars of the religion Islam to students in a fun, easy and interactive way. My Salah Mat is available from www.mysalahmat.com.

Barn Croft’s Special Visitor Barn Croft Primary School had a wonderful day as they were honoured to receive HRH Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, in April to share the beginning of their Commonwealth Big Lunch celebrations alongside the Eden Project. The children had prepared activities to show and share with the Duchess including the choir singing and an entrance fanfare. The Duchess had a go at making a friendship bracelet with recycled beads from Kenya and an origami flower for table placements. She also chatted with pupils about the different types of breads they were baking. Later on the children were presented with a beautiful cake and they in turn gave Camilla a book of poems written by pupils. Speaking to the children, the Duchess talked about her passion for the Commonwealth and how the Big Lunch Party would bring people in the community together, particularly isolated people. The Commonwealth Big Lunch is simply about sharing food and gathering people together to celebrate what we have in common. From a couple of people in a back garden to hundreds in a community space, the lunches joined millions of people across the Commonwealth in the official summit celebrations. A great day was had by all at Barn Croft. To find out more about the event, please visit www.chogm2018.org.uk. 4

You Are Awesome inspires and empowers young readers with a toolkit for developing a growth mindset and finding the confidence to realise their potential. The first children’s book from the Times journalist, two-time Olympian and bestselling mindset author Matthew Syed, takes the themes and principles of his award-winning adult novels and recasts them for a 9+ readership. Using real life stories (concerning the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Serena Williams and JK Rowling) Syed demonstrates that success really is earned rather than pre-ordained, and that our abilities can be transformed through practice. With a growth mindset, based on hard work and determination, practice, self-belief and resilience, there’s no reason why anyone can’t achieve (almost) anything. Practical, insightful and positive, this is the book to help children build resilience, embrace their mistakes and grow into successful, happy adults. Matthew Syed’s number one best-selling book You Are Awesome is available for £9.99 online and from all good high street retailers.

It is for any child who might be feeling that everyone is getting places except them, and challenges the thing that holds you back (mostly your own insecurities). Have you ever thought about an independent education for your child, but have been frightened by the fees? Forest School is at an exciting stage of its long history – a co-educational school with single-sex teaching at key stages, it is now educating more pupils than ever on the same site in Snaresbrook where it started out in 1834. Marcus Cliff Hodges has been Warden (Headteacher) for two years, having previously been Deputy Warden since 2005. Marcus told Primary Times, “Forest benefits from a tremendous location, a city school with thirty acres of grounds surrounded by ancient forest on the very edge of London, all creating a wonderfully diverse community for the pupils that we are very proud of.” Forest is London’s only ‘diamond structure’ co-educational school, giving their pupils the best of all worlds. Within the Prep School and

Senior School, the Form and House system means that pupils are looked after in small units of care. In the Pre-Prep (4–7) and Sixth Form (16–18), boys and girls are taught together, but between the ages of 7 and 16 there is distinct provision for boys and girls who are taught in separate classes to maximise the benefits of single-sex teaching for children of that age. Forest School’s mission is to provide an absolutely outstanding, distinct and all-round education for all pupils which consists of excellent academic teaching and learning, superb pastoral care and extensive opportunities outside the classroom for pupils to learn and develop in many different ways. You will find details of future opportunities to visit Forest on their website. The Summer Open Evening takes place on Monday 25 June, 4.307pm. For more information, please visit www.forest.org.uk. An Interview with Holly Smale by Hannah Draisey I enjoyed the facts Holly Smale, writer of the popular teenage novel series Geek Girl, you was recently interviewed by young journalist Hannah Draisey about her books and her inspiration for the series. Hannah conducted the included interview by phone as part of the BBC School Report project when she in Geek was a patient attending the Evelina Children’s Hospital’s own school in Girl. What South London. Hannah has kindly let us publish her interview. interests What made you want to write Geek Girl? you in I wanted to be a writer since I was four but didn’t know what to write about. facts like I was 29 when I decided to write a story about my past. these?

Getting to Know Geek Girl

How long does it take you to write a book? Each of my books took a different amount of time to write. The first Geek Girl book took three years to write because I was working full time and writing at the weekends. The second book took a year as I didn’t have to work and had more experience. The books I write now take six to nine months each.

Where do you get your inspiration? I get inspiration from everything. I listen to conversations, I pay attention to how people walk and dress, I am incredibly nosey. I use experiences from my own life, if I overhear something funny or interesting I might include it in my books.

Which books did you enjoy reading when you were growing up? When I was very little, I read the Faraway Tree series. When I got a bit older, I read The Borrowers and Anne of Green Gables. Anne of Green Gables helped me when I was going through a difficult time.

Which books have you enjoyed reading recently? I’ve just finished reading the Game of Thrones books. It’s the first time I’ve read a fantasy novel. I’ve enjoyed the difference in genre. As a writer it’s important to read different types of books. You can sometimes get stuck reading just one genre.

Do you ever read your own books? Yes, I don’t read them for pleasure because I know them so well and I know what made me write the books. Because it’s a series, when starting to write the next book I go back and read all the books before that again. I remind myself what’s going on and the type of tempo the story is paced at.

I was a lot like Harriet (Geek Girl character) when I was younger and still am now. Facts are a different way of seeing the world and facts are Harriet’s narrative voice. It is also a way of showing Harriet’s personality and character.

Are any of the characters in Geek Girl based on real people? No character is the same as a person in real life, most of them are fictional however a couple are very similar to people I know. Harriet’s dad for example is very similar to my own dad. Harriet was very similar to me as a teenager. Some of the characters are based on a mix of different people I’ve met.

To finish, Hannah also asked Holly some questions about herself. What advice would you give your teenage self? I’d tell her to be brave. When I was younger, I blamed myself for things that happened; I’d go back and give myself a hug.

What is your favourite flavour of ice cream? What a good question. Salted caramel ice cream and Turkish delight ice cream, which is very hard to find. Basically anything, I love ice cream!

Holly Smale’s first published book, Geek Girl, won the 2014 Waterstones Children’s Book Prize and she’s gone from strength to strength ever since. There are six books in the Geek Girl series, all published in paperback by Harper Collins and are available in High Street and online bookshops. Follow us on Twitter - @PT_LondonSandE
