Coping at Christmas By Edmond Chan, NSPCC Childline Supervisor

Christmas can be such a magical time of year and something that lots of us really look forward to. But sometimes if your Christmas doesn’t sound the same as other people’s it can leave you feeling down. Or perhaps there are some difficulties at home that will make it a stressful time for you, instead of a time to celebrate. At Childline we hear from lots of children who struggle to enjoy Christmas. Some feel lonely, some have arguments with family, while others miss people they want to share it with but can’t. Some don’t celebrate Christmas because it’s not part of their beliefs and feel left out. If you’re not looking forward to Christmas, for whatever reason, don’t worry. We’ve got some advice that will help you. Take a break If there have been arguments at home or family members are annoying you a bit, take a break. Plan some time to listen to some music or chat to friends – this will help lift your mood and you can talk about what’s bothering you. Don’t compare Every Christmas is different so try not to compare yours to someone else’s. People only put on social media what they want people to see so don’t worry if your Christmas doesn’t look the same. Talk about how you feel However you’re feeling it’s important you don’t keep it all to yourself. Talk about how you feel with someone you trust – that could be a parent, carer or relative. If you don’t have anyone to talk to you can always talk to Childline. It’s OK not to celebrate It might seem like everyone celebrates Christmas when every advert on TV is about Christmas and the shops are full of decorations and gifts. But not everyone does. If you feel left out because you’re not celebrating, you could talk to your mum, dad or carers. Or get support from our counsellors or share your feelings with other young people on our message boards. How to feel better The Childline website has lots of tools to help you feel better. The Calm Zone has activities, games and exercises to help you feel calm. You can log in to the website and create your own Mood Journal – this helps you let your feelings out. Or why not share your thoughts and feeling on the Childline message boards? Everything you need can be found at www.childline.org: Calm Zone: www.childline.org.uk/toolbox/calm-zone Mood Journal: www.childline.org.uk/toolbox/mood-journal Message boards: www.childline.org.uk/get-support/messageboards If you’d rather speak to someone that’s ok – we are here any time of day or night. You can call Childline free on 0800 1111. Or you can chat online to us at www.childline.org.uk/get-support/12-1-counsellor-chat. Photo credit:Tom Hull

Invisible Goodness Wrapped Up in Fun “When my children were young, like every parent, I wrestled to get them to eat vegetables so I would hide them inside things I knew they liked.” explains Lucy Quick, founder of Perform. “I see Perform as a bit like my pasta sauce with hidden vegetables. It’s tasty but kids don’t realise it’s filled with nutrition and vitamins. Perform classes are invisible goodness wrapped up in a fun hour of games, role-play, dance routines and songs.” Taking part in regular drama activities encourages confident and fluent speaking, boosts reading and writing abilities and enhances coordination and spatial awareness. “The children think they’re enjoying an hour of fun but they’re also being equipped with essential confidence-building social skills.” says Lucy. “Rescuing a mermaid from a pirate ship might seem like a fun and imaginative improvisation for 6 year olds, but it’s teaching problem-solving and teamwork too.” Go along and try a free class at the Barbican, Hornchurch, South Woodford, Upminster,Victoria Park or Walthamstow Village.Visit perform.org.uk/try for details. Primary Times readers can enjoy an introductory £40 discount on bookings made by 14 January quoting code PTEL140122.

Make Essex’s Only Light Fantastic Train Spectacle Your Family Treat

At the end of November, the volunteers of the Epping Ongar Railway put the finishing touches to the Light Fantastic services week, ahead of a sell-out first weekend. The Light Fantastic service takes passengers from North Weald to Ongar and back aboard a brilliantly decorated train. After boarding, the music starts and the passengers travel to Ongar enjoying a show of music and lights along the way. On arrival at Ongar the train stops for a short while when everyone gets the chance to see the train in all its glory before returning to North Weald. The event builds on the previous years and everyone is set for it to be a sell-out. However, at the time of writing there are some tickets available before Christmas or why not think about taking the family out for an evening service with lights and music after Christmas? The Epping Ongar Light Fantastic runs on selected dates until 9 January 2022. For more information and to get tickets, visit www.eorailway.co.uk/events.

How Social Activities Benefit Children’s Development

Childhood is a key time for developing lifelong skills and abilities. One area that really helps children to learn and develop new skills is social playtime. This can include a wide range of activities from sports to performing arts. It covers anything that requires children to work together to play. Social playtime helps children to learn and develop many skills that will be vital as they become adults and will continue to benefit them throughout their lives. Some of the key ways social playtime helps children develop is by improving social skills, building confidence and developing children’s emotional intelligence. It also encourages teamwork and introduces the concept of friendly competition. At Jigsaw Performing Arts Schools your child can benefit from improving all of these skills through dance, drama and singing. Book your two week trial at www.jigsaw-arts.co.uk to discover if it is the right activity for your child.
