Joey, the original life-size West End horse puppet from the National Theatre’s award-winning stage adaptation of War Horse, will be a centre piece at the exhibition. This unique exhibition will also showcase the notebooks and manuscripts that have become the classics we know today. Props from stage and film will include a goose puppet, on loan from the National Theatre and a World War I painting that inspired War Horse by war artist F. W. Reed. The exhibition will include an atmospheric soundscape to introduce the various familiar themes in Michael’s storytelling - war, the countryside and farming, the Scilly Isles and friendship. A replica of Michael’s creative caravan will be reconstructed so that visitors can imagine, daydream and pen story ideas inspired by Michael’s beloved Devon. Additional exhibition highlights include a replica shipwrecked boat, featured in Wreck of the Zanzibar, a multi-sensory sculpture of Billy the Kid and a playful under 5s area inspired by the Mudpuddle Farm Series with dress up and props.

Children are Encouraged to Write It Pink Lady® apples and the Guild of Food Writers have announced their partnership in the Guild’s Write It competition for young food writers. The competition encourages children from three age groups (10 and under, 11 to 14 and 15 to 18) to capture one of their favourite food experiences on the page. This year’s theme is Partnerships: this could be the combination of favourite foods, cooking or eating with friends or family, or your ultimate food partnership such as apple crumble and custard, bacon and eggs, strawberries and cream or perhaps something more unusual. This year’s judges include the Guild’s President, Xanthe Clay, and Stefan Gates, awardwinning documentary maker, TV presenter and author of books on food and science for young people. Also on the judging panel is Jo Ingleby, Cook of the Year in the BBC’s Food and Farming Awards 2015, and award-winning food writers Diana Henry and Felicity Cloake. They’ll use their collective experience, enthusiasm for food and drink and love of a good read to find and celebrate the outstanding work in each age group. The competition closing date is Sunday 30 April. To enter visit www.pinkladyapples.co.uk. For more details on the competition and prizes, visit www.gfw.co.uk.

There are many reasons why a child may be unable to stay with their birth parents and when this happens, the local authority has a duty to find them an alternative place to stay. Foster care is one of the solutions. Hackney still needs more foster carers to help make a difference to the lives of local children coming into care. Hackney believe that all children and young people deserve positive childhood experiences and foster carers play an important role in achieving the best possible outcome for children in care. Working with the Council, foster carers provide a safe, stable, nurturing and supportive environment for children and young people to reside, until they are able to return to their families or live independently. Foster carers are provided with comprehensive support and training as well as financial support that recognises experience and professional development. To foster for Hackney, you just need to have space in your heart and home and a dedication to help us care for our vulnerable children and young people. Foster carers do not need to live in Hackney but must be able to travel to training sessions and support groups within the borough. For more information about fostering with Hackney, please call the Freephone service line on 08000 730 418 or email fostering. recruitment@hackney.gov.uk

My London - Colour, Draw, Explore

Planning a day out in London? Take a trip through London with Majel van der Meulen’s fun colouring and activity book. Can you draw the people on the London Eye, design your own sky scraper and colour the boats along the Thames? Follow the river, spotting buildings, people and famous landmarks, colouring and drawing as you go. The book has been made to the size of a small rucksack, so can be easily stored away when not in use. The sturdy cover of the book and thick paper inside will keep your child’s drawings safe during the day, and can easily be cut out of the book and put on the fridge afterwards - a lovely souvenir to remember your day in London. The book encourages children to respond to and record what they see all around them. Activities range from designing your own skyscraper to creating your own art show at the Tate, making this book the perfect companion to a day out in London, or a wonderful souvenir to fill with memories once they are home. This beautiful keepsake features an exciting fold out scene, and includes four postcards to personalise and send to friends and family. The expressive illustrations bring the bustling capital to life, inspiring children to capture the excitement for themselves.

Ride on the Easter Express

Want to try one of the longest Easter egg hunts in Essex? The Epping Ongar Railway continues to be an extremely popular day out for families and this Easter should be no different. The fun starts this holiday with probably the longest Easter Egg Hunt in Essex – end to end it is 131,579 eggs long and to complete it children must ride on the ‘Easter Express’. The Easter Bunny is around to help children solve the clues on the sheet. A magic show and disco are also provided to keep the kids entertained all day long.

For a memorable day out that’s sure to impress the kids this Easter, visit www.theo2.co.uk and book a climb. Prices start from £30. To avoid disappointment, advance bookings are suggested.

Easter Treasure Hunt

Celebrities including Mel C, Dynamo and Dave Rowntree will Tweet clues for the ultimate Easter Treasure Hunt of art pieces worth over £42,000, which will be hidden around London by celebrated Zebra One Gallery artist, Dom Pattinson. Each piece is worth £3,000 and a pair makes up the whole image worth £7,000 - pairs will always be hidden near each other in the most unexpected places from changing rooms of department stores to trains, alleyways and famous landmarks. Those lucky enough to find the art can take them to Zebra One Gallery for free framing. To raise money for humanitarian charity the International Rescue Committee (IRC) Dom will give them 50% of sales from pieces at the Zebra One Gallery exhibition of these pieces, which will run from Easter Monday for a month. Education Education Education Save the Children’s Den Day Returns

Save the Children’s Den Day, an educational interactive fundraising event for schools, is returning for a third year on Friday 16 June. Den Day calls on schools to join in with a creative, fun adventure as pupils build dens together and raise money to ensure children have a safe place to sleep and play. In 2016, 600,000 children signed up to take part helping to raise funds to support Save the Children’s work helping vulnerable children across the world. Schools can sign up now at www.DenDay.org to receive fund raising kits containing everything they need to hold a fun-filled day in the summer term. The kit includes posters, stickers, den ideas and great teaching resources to link Den Day into the curriculum and school’s plans. Teaching resources are designed to fit with the KS1 and KS2 curriculum, encouraging creativity and teamwork, while pupils learn about the challenges that some children face around the world and how their fundraising will help. Schools can raise money however they like, helping pupils get sponsored for their den-building or simply asking all pupils to make a donation for taking part. There are lots of ideas in the free fundraising kit. Right now, millions of children do not have a safe place to sleep or play. Save the Children does whatever it takes to reach children caught up in conflict, fleeing war or persecution or living rough on the street. Help build a better world by raising money and signing up at www.DenDay.org Photo credit: Jonathan Cherry/Save the Children

Shakespeare with a Musical Twist

On 20 March two million children in 12,000 primary schools across the UK broke into song in celebration of all things Shakespeare. Shakespeare Week 2017 (20-26 March) kicked off with the Big Shakespeare Assembly, featuring a brand new song Shakespeare Rocks! - especially composed for the occasion. The music theme continues throughout the week with a Composition Competition in partnership with Birmingham Conservatoire, and new music resources created by ABRSM (the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music) along with free access to the Classical 100 online platform. 18

20 Mar - 14 May ‘17

Shakespeare Week 2017 has gone digital with Mission Shakespeare, an online resource brimming with fun activities and games to complete at home for a chance to earn special digital badges. Every day, children can tune in online to Marcia Williams, author of Tales from Shakespeare, reading The Tempest in five installments. Shakespeare Week is of course the perfect time to visit the five historic Shakespeare houses in Stratford-upon-Avon, but if you can’t make it to Stratford, you could always catch a virtual tour online, hosted by local school children. Now in its fourth year, Shakespeare Week 2017 provides teachers, home educators and families with free resources and ideas to teach Shakespeare across all subjects in the national curriculum including numeracy, geography, and computing. To register, access free resources and take part in Shakespeare Week 2017, visit www.shakespeareweek.org.uk.

Theatre for London Primary Schools

Deputy Mayor for London, Joanne McCartney, recently met children from Archbishop Sumner Primary School in Lambeth to experience the National Theatre’s latest production for primary schools. This spring, more than 12,000 young people will see the NT’s tour for younger audiences of Romeo and Juliet and Macbeth, with these productions visiting 27 schools across the capital and playing on stage at the National Theatre and Stratford Circus. The NT is touring live theatre to schools across London with its latest production of Romeo and Juliet. The production is a modern twist on Shakespeare’s classic love story set against a vibrant urban backdrop with excitement, colour, dancing and live song. A company of eight present a contemporary celebration of Shakespeare’s masterpiece suitable for children aged 8–12yrs. Lisa Burger, Executive Director at the National Theatre told Primary Times, “It is often the logistics of bringing a whole year group to the theatre which can be the barrier to young people accessing world-class theatre. By helping children to see great theatre, we are seeking to inspire children’s learning and create the next generation of audiences and playmakers.” Photo credit: Ellie Kurttz

Financial Support at Bancroft’s School

Have you ever thought about an independent education for your child, but been put off by the fees? At Bancroft’s in Woodford Green they are able to help with the cost of education for bright children whose family circumstances mean that a Bancroft’s education might otherwise be out of their reach. Every year, children benefit from Means Tested Scholarships which provide significant financial help to less well-off families. Such awards are given to children joining into year 3, year 7 and year 12, based on their performance in entrance tests, interview and their family’s need. Bancroft’s also offer Academic and Music Scholarships at 11+ and 16+ to talented children regardless of their family’s income.

Summit Tutoring aims to engage your child and make them excited about learning. Each activity is targeted to their individual learning style, which builds confidence and aspirations to achieve greater heights - every parents dream for their child. Every class at Summit is taught in a small group with no more than 5/6 pupils per teacher - each session lasts for 1 hour and twenty minutes and is broken down into different learning activities. Every child learns in a variety of ways, including plenty of one to one teaching time – this includes learning methods and paper-based activities, computer activities, audio resources, work books and worksheets. The pupil:teacher ratio is much smaller than in the average classroom. This means that children get more teacher attention and feel more confident to ask questions than they may do in the classroom environment. Summit aims to teach each child in the way that suits them. The staff ensure that the children work in a positive learning
