Strawberry Ripple Ice Cream

As the weather gets warmer (we hope!), what better way to cool yourselves down than a delicious, healthy ice-cream straight from your own kitchen? Mrs Bun the Baker shares her secrets on this healthy sweet treat from her book ‘Baking with Mrs Bun the Baker’. The easy-to-follow, child-friendly cookbook is packed with favourites and tried and tested, approved and munched recipes from the Young Buns who attend the award-winning cookery school. This book gives children an insight into how exciting baking can be and will inspire confidence in adults who have never baked before.

Repeat for all the strawberries. Avoid creating big pieces as they will only end up as lumps of ice in the final ice-cream.

Ingredients – you will need:

container and place this into the freezer. Be patient as you will need to leave it for at least 6 hours before you can eat the ice-cream! If you take it out 10 minutes before you want it, the finished ice-cream will be easier to scoop.

FROM KITCHEN ZERO

TO BAKING HERO!

15 strawberries 225ml double cream: use extra thick cream, if you prefer – you don’t need to whip it! 100ml sweetened condensed milk 1 teaspoon vanilla essence 75ml single cream 2 tablespoons icing sugar: optional

Method

1. Have a 500ml freezer-friendly container at hand 2. Wash the strawberries and remove their stalks. Get a strawberry,

hold it between your thumb and finger, and squish it into a bowl.

Follow us on Twitter - @PT_LondonSandE

3. Pour the double cream into a jug. Whisk the cream until it’s sticking to the whisk - it should look like ice-cream on top of a cone. Add in the condensed milk, vanilla essence, single cream and the strawberries. 4. Mix the ingredients up for a ripple effect – but don’t over mix or you’ll have pink ice-cream with no swirls! Have a taste. If it’s not sweet enough for you, add in some or all of the icing sugar. 5. Pour the mixture into a 500ml freezer-friendly plastic

Variations

Use other berries such as blueberries, raspberries, blackberries – or use lots of different berries together. Add some fudge pieces and squeeze in some toffee sauce before it goes in the freezer. For chocolate-chip ice-cream, add chunks of your favourite chocolate: plain, milk or white. Or, again, mix them together. Chop and mash a banana for a delicious banana ice-cream. Baking with Mrs Bun the Baker is available for £12.99 online and from all good book stores. For more information, please visit www.mrsbunthebaker.net

East Ham writer Onjali Q. Raúf has been named overall winner of the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize 2019 for her debut novel The Boy At The Back Of The Class. The prize, now in its fifteenth year, consists of £5,000 and the promise of ongoing commitment to the winners’ writing career, making it one of the most valuable and prestigious children’s book awards in the UK. Onjali Q. Raúf is Founder and CEO of the London based human rights organisation Making Herstory, working in partnership with other movements to end the abuse, trafficking and enslavement of women and girls in the UK and beyond. Onjali believes that everyone can create positive change, and her debut novel The Boy At The Back Of The Class was inspired by the remarkable people she met while working in refugee camps. The Boy At The Back Of The Class is a story of hope, friendship and the importance of kindness. Full of heart and humour it is told from a unique perspective. When a new boy joins their class, a group of children try to befriend him. They soon learn that Ahmet is a refugee and has been separated from his family. None of the grown-ups seem to be able to help him, so the friends come up with a daring plan, embarking on a seemingly madcap adventure.

Local Writer Wins Waterstones Prize

Almost half a million people across the UK spent an hour watching the birds that visit their garden or outdoor space as part of the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch earlier this year, counting more than 7.5 million birds in total. The house sparrow remains at the top of the UK Big Garden Birdwatch rankings with almost 1.2 million sightings throughout the weekend but for many species fewer birds were recorded than in 2018. In Greater London, the top three most common garden visitors, in order, were house sparrow, wood pigeon and starling. House sparrows showed a 3.5% increase across London gardens, keeping them top of the charts for London. UK house sparrow numbers, reported by participants since the Big Garden Birdwatch began, have fallen by 56%, but in recent years, national numbers have slowly started to rise again, giving conservationists hope that at least a partial recovery may be happening. For a full round-up of all the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch results and to see which birds were visiting gardens where you live, visit www.rspb.org.uk/ birdwatch Photo credit: Ray Kennedy (rspb-images.com)

Unicorn Land

Unicorn Land is the most magical experience your child will ever have, with memories to last a lifetime. The UK’s first ever unicorn tour is a wonderful opportunity for children to meet, groom and ride unicorns or have a memorable trip in a unicorn princess carriage. Unicorn Land is an enchanting world, with all things unicorn, including a unicorn inflatable rodeo, theatre shows, unicorn DJ, face painting, bouncy castle, unicorn dress up and the chance to take part in the Great British Slime Off competition with celebrity judges. The idea for Unicorn Land came from 9-yearold Alyssya Carrington, whose father Stafford, an award-winning entrepreneur and event organiser, took her to visit a unicorn for her birthday. When Stafford saw the huge smile on his daughter’s face, he knew he wanted other parents and children to experience the same magical feeling he did when Alyssya first saw a unicorn. Unicorn Dream has partnered with Make a Wish, to make seriously ill children’s wishes come true. For every 10 Unicorn Land tickets sold, they will grant a magical wish for a very special child, giving away hundreds of tickets. During the tour, unicorns will be visiting sick children, spreading happiness and magic across the country. For 15% off your magical experience at Unicorn Land, book today using your exclusive discount code PRIME15 at www.unicorndream.co.uk. Prices are from £37 and adults go free. The Big Seaweed Search

It’s slippery, slimy, smelly stuff but it’s not just something that messes up your day at the seaside. Seaweed is vitally important to our coastal ecology. Seaweed provides protection from waves and storms, shelter for fish and shellfish, energy for intertidal creatures and even food for us. With around 650 seaweed species in the UK, we are living in a global diversity hotspot. The Big Seaweed Search (www. bigseaweedsearch. org) is a citizen science project devised by the Natural History Museum and delivered in partnership with the Marine Conservation Society. The search itself is simple and is designed so that anyone can download the materials and take part on any shore where seaweed is growing. No special knowledge is required and a selection of 14 types of seaweed are featured in a user-friendly guide and recording sheet. Why not have a nice walk along the beach and at the same time help to provide data so that scientists can discover how our UK seaweeds are changing in abundance and distribution, in response to rising sea surface temperature, increasing ocean acidification and the spread of non-native species. Financial Support at Bancroft’s School

Education News Forest School – Where People Grow

Forest is a well-rounded, happy, busy school offering excellent academic provision and a full range of co-curricular opportunities, with around 1400 boys and girls from 4–18yrs. They believe that the combination of single-sex and mixed educational opportunities – the diamond structure – gives pupils the best of all worlds. They thrive on it. Within the Prep School and Senior School, the Form and House system means that pupils are looked after in small units of care. In the Pre-Prep (4–7) and Sixth Form (16–18), boys and girls are taught together, but between the ages of 7 and 16 pupils are taught in separate classes, to maximise the benefits of single-sex teaching for children of that age. Life is not a single-sex environment, however, and a child’s social development involves learning to form relationships with a wide range of people. This is where Forest’s diamond structure comes into its own. Outside the classroom, for example, boys and girls of all ages mix in a wide range of co-curricular activities; brothers and sisters share the same school in a way that single-sex teaching would otherwise preclude. Forest School benefits from a tremendous location, a city school with thirty acres of grounds surrounded by ancient forest on the very edge of London. You will find details of future opportunities to visit Forest on the website, www.forest.org.uk. The Summer Open Evening takes place on Monday 24 June, 4.30pm -7pm. An Open Day will be held on 21 September, 8.30am-1.30pm. For more information, email admissions@ forest.org.uk or call 020 8520 1744.

Have you ever thought about an independent education for your child, but have been frightened by the fees? At Bancroft’s in Woodford Green they are able to help with school fees for bright children whose family circumstances mean that a Bancroft’s education would otherwise be beyond their reach. Every year, children benefit from means tested awards which provide significant financial help to less well-off families. Such awards are given to children joining in Year 3 and Year 7 based on their performance in entrance tests, interview and their family’s need. Bancroft’s also offer academic and music scholarships at 11+ and 16+ to talented children regardless of their family’s income. Bancroft’s School, established in 1737, is a fully co-educational, independent day school for children from 7 to 18. They have a fantastic history of academic success in GCSE and A Level and pupils of all ages enjoy varied sporting and co-curricular programmes. Join Bancroft’s for their summer open days. You will have the chance to view their fantastic facilities and to talk about the financial support which they may be able to offer your child.Visit www.bancrofts.org for more information.

WaterAid Voices

International aid charity WaterAid has launched its first-ever voice skill powered for Amazon Alexa. WaterAid Voices, an interactive storytelling experience for schools and families helps to educate children about the state of the world’s water, toilets and hygiene around the world. The skill will take children to a different land entirely to learn about life in the Madagascan village of Tsarafangitra. Through a series of six interactive voice messages, they will learn some handy phrases in the local language, recipes in Malagasy cuisine and how to spot a zebu through quizzes and mini-games. Designed with Key Stage 2 students in mind, this provides the perfect post-school activity for parents who want an interactive, educational and enjoyable past-time for all the family, while raising awareness of an important topic. A shocking one in three of the world’s schools lack adequate toilets, compromising children’s human rights to sanitation and leaving them to either use dirty, unsafe pits, go in the open, or stay

Art Solutions at Woodford Green Prep

As a school, Woodford Green know that exciting and interesting displays not only make the school community more inviting, but can start conversations and create engagement from students. Recently, they had an Art and DT week with the theme of ‘recycling and our planet’. They invited various artists to work with the children and taught lessons based on the theme. The artists worked with the children to create six impressive collaborative art pieces. For two days the School was buzzing with creativity and excitement. The company, Art Solutions, create huge pieces of art using a combination of recycled material and tissue paper. They have many different options available such as scenes from fairy tales, jungles, landscapes and recreations of famous pieces of art. The school opted for the latter, and decided on 6 iconic paintings to recreate. The workshop was incredibly good fun. The school was turned into an art studio with all year groups contributing. The skill of the artists, combined with the enthusiasm of the children, made the project a great success, whilst also creating a real energy and interest around art and the artists they were imitating. The work is now on view around the school and looks fantastic. A broad and exciting curriculum is key to pupils achieving outstanding results in 11+ examinations and interviews, for more information see WGPS’s 2019 results at www.wgprep. co.uk/380/results.
