Preparing for Secondary School

Anti-bullying charity Kidscape, West Ham United and club partners investment company Basset & Gold have teamed up to beat bullying and help children make the move from primary to secondary school. Early in May West Ham players including Jack Wilshere, Ryan Fredericks and Angelo Ogbonna were joined by pupils from two neighbouring primary schools at the East London team’s Academy training ground, Chadwell Heath in Romford. The players shared personal experiences, team challenges and how they’ve overcome them to inspire the 11-year-olds, teach them about how to manage change and stand strong against bullying. Following the Q&A with the players the children were able to have a kickabout on the brand new indoor facility at Chadwell Heath. The event kicks off Kidscape’s RISE programme of workshops for children moving up to secondary school. The sessions, delivered in schools in England and Wales in June and July, are designed to build children’s confidence and self-esteem as they transition from primary to secondary school. Kidscape share strategies for managing change, making friends, dealing with bullying and conflict, as well as learning how to speak up. The workshops are expected to reach over 225 children in the first year. 4

Noye’s Fludde

Theatre Royal Stratford East and English National Opera are presenting a new production of Benjamin Britten’s masterpiece, Noye’s Fludde. Combining the talents of professional singers, actors and musicians with those of school children and the local community, Lyndsey Turner directs this joyous new production at Theatre Royal Stratford East between 1 and 13 July. Professional singers will be joined by undergraduates from the Royal College of Music and 120 children from local primary schools, the Stratford East Singers and the ENO Community Choir. The schools involved are Brampton Primary School in Newham and Churchfields Junior School in Redbridge. For many of these children, it will be their first introduction to opera and the professional stage. In preparation, they rehearsed weekly with local artists and the creative team before joining the full company at Stratford East. Noye’s Fludde is a one-act opera by Benjamin Britten based on the Old Testament story of Noah’s Ark, and speaks of courage, redemption and the promise of a new beginning. God is angry, and a flood is coming. But Noah is building a boat, wide enough and deep enough not just for his family, but for a cargo of birds and beasts, both great and small. For forty days and forty nights, this chorus of unlikely shipmates endure a mighty storm, in the hope that a new world will be waiting for them on the other side. Photo credit: Sharron Wallace

This summer Jump London are running a competition for all children under 12. They want you to design a mascot for Jump London. The competition will be split into 2 groups, 0-5 and 6-12. A winner from each age range will win a free pass until the end of 2019 for Jump London. The overall winner will have their design made into an official mascot for Jump London. They will also be invited to be the first to be pictured with the new mascot. To enter, children must draw a design of what they think Jump London’s mascot should look like, human, animal or something completely different. Let your imagination run wild. A photo of the drawing must then be added to Instagram or Facebook, tagging @jumplondontrampoline and using the #jumplondonmascot. Feel free to upload any photos of you at the park at the same time. They always love to see the smiles the trampoline park brings to everyone. The competition is open until 1 September. Winners from both age groups as well as the overall winner will be announced in early September so get drawing and good luck.

Waltham Forest Arts Funding Awarded

Waltham Forest Council, London’s first Borough of Culture has made £250,000 of match funding available for art projects in schools. The investment will provide a great teaching and learning opportunity for the pupils who will work with artists to develop pieces of art and run art projects allowing them to get involved and explore their creativity whilst leaving a permanent legacy for the school and the local community. Seventeen schools have been successful in their bid for funding, which will benefit more than 8,000 pupils, and leave a lasting impact for years to come. Projects include a mosaic with a flora and fauna theme, artworked wooden panels along the school’s walkway representing a year group’s view of one of the many different cultures within the school community and a large-scale artwork made out of coloured plastic discs, inspired by Walthamstow Wetlands. There will also be a series of murals with children’s inspirational quotes, a large outdoor metal and ceramic sculpture from children who have explored creatures of flight, a 3D sensory, sustainable, sculpture garden, an Anthony Lysycia stone sculpture as well as work created alongside the Barbican. George Tomlinson Primary School in Leytonstone will be providing an immersive theatre experience with three fairy tales (Snow White and the Red Rose, Hansel and Gretel and The Elves and the Shoemaker). The shows will be free for all schools in the borough to visit. Photo credit: Andrew Baker

An immersive exhibition of the world of Judith Kerr’s creatures at Discover Children’s Story Centre.

The V&A Museum of Childhood is reinventing itself and you are invited to help to redesign the museum. The most ambitious redevelopment project in the building’s 147 year history is in its second year with content development and design underway. In preparation for the transformation, an entire gallery has been turned into a working design studio, where visitors are invited to try new display ideas, feedback on the work in progress, meet the team and shape the future of this beloved museum. In Open Studio, visitors are encouraged to engage with the collections in a more hands-on way and can propose design and curatorial ideas for the new galleries. Children, families, teachers and community groups are all central to the reinvention of this museum which aims at inspiring curiosity and building creative confidence among future generations. The space will host a series of family workshops and special events throughout the summer, offering visitors unparalleled insight into and involvement in the museum’s exciting years ahead. School’s Out for Summer...

Fantastic Feats

BBC wildlife’s Wild Cities presenter, Hannah Stitfall,

inspires us to... become a wildlife filmmaker this summer You’re never too young to tell animal stories and cherish the wildlife you encounter. That’s the message from passionate wildlife content creator for BBC Earth, Springwatch and Wild Cities, Hannah Stitfall. From whales leaping out of the waves at close quarters to plastic pollution on our beaches, mobile phone footage shared online is an incredibly powerful tool in defence of the natural world. Why not film some of the wildlife you experience on the school run or beyond and make it the star of the show? “It is very easy to get down about the state of our planet,” said Hannah, a wildlife presenter who has worked alongside some of the world’s best naturalists and conservationists, has filmed around the world and worked on BBC Spring, Autumn and Winterwatch, “but the tide is slowly turning – and that is thanks to passionate individuals like the people reading this. “Whether it is through public speaking, TV, nature writing or simply through their own social media channels, the conservation movement happening right now is something we should all be proud of and is incredibly exciting! We can make a difference and already are, but only if we don’t give up.” Sir David Attenborough’s BBC show Wildlife on One was a must-see for a young Hannah who rushed home after school dance class to tune in. The filmmaker’s love of wildlife started very early, at playschool, where she pretended to be a flamingo and went on to develop an obsession with foxes. Hannah is encouraging families to try making

their own wildlife films from their mobile phones. “Find something you’re passionate about and go film it – that could be anything from a house martin to a mayfly nymph – every single species has a story and why shouldn’t it be you who tells it? As mentioned earlier – if you only reach one person then they tell another person – that’s more people that now know about that species story. Hannah’s new four-part BBC Earth series filmed in South Africa is coming out later this year. She believes sharing stories about our natural world and the species we share our planet with is now one of the most important jobs on the planet. “I see it almost as a domino effect when I’m working on a BBC production or making my own content – if I reach just one person, they will then tell or share the content with another person, then another person and another, which in turn hopefully reaches a huge audience. If every single one of us managed to change just one person’s mind about protecting our wildlife or hooked them into caring about nature then I truly believe our work as wildlife communicators would be done – and that is why it matters so much to me.” Hannah will be at RSPB Birdfair, which runs from Friday 16 to Sunday 18 August in Rutland, and addresses some of the big issues of the day, including climate change and wildlife decline. For tickets and news visit: www.birdfair.org.uk, @ TheBirdfair and Like Birdfair on Facebook.

London’s long-standing history of architectural and engineering firsts will be celebrated this summer by a programme of more than 50 outdoor events, as part of the City of London Corporation’s Fantastic Feats: the building of London. Inspired by a number of key historical dates, the six-month programme of mostly free-toattend events includes the 200th anniversary of the birth of Sir Joseph William Bazalgette (1819–91), the civil engineer responsible for creating London’s sewer system, which was crucial in reducing the cholera epidemics in the capital, the 500th anniversary of the death of Leonardo da Vinci, the 125th anniversary of the completion of Tower Bridge and the joint 150th anniversary of the openings of Blackfriars Bridge and Holborn Viaduct. An exciting line-up of UK and international artists has been commissioned by the City of London Corporation to present street theatre, dance performances, exhibitions, guided walking tours, and art installations, including The People’s Tower (20 - 21 July) by French artist Olivier Grossetête, best known for using cardboard to build – and then, destroy - giant recreations of landmark buildings. From dancers weaving their way through the Square Mile and a ship that turns into a whale to the ever-popular City Beerfest in Guildhall Yard and the opportunity to view alternative designs for Tower Bridge, there will be so much to enjoy. Street performances, featuring aerial, acrobatic and pyrotechnic displays, including Générik Vapeur and Gorilla Circus (7 September) and Hackney-based female-led acrobatic dance company, Mimbre (2 August), will also feature in the programme. International Bat Night

International Bat Night is a popular annual event to draw public awareness to threatened bat populations across the world. Bat Night takes place in more than 30 countries on the last full weekend of August. This year, International Bat Night is on 24 and 25 August. Bats are mammals, and in fact they are the only mammals that can fly. Like other mammals, they have hair or fur on their bodies and are warm-blooded. In the UK, there are 17 different types of bats. Many people think bats are blind, but in fact they can see almost as well as humans. However, at night, their ears are more important than their eyes - they use a special sonar system called ‘echolocation,’ meaning they find things using echoes. Why not see and hear bats in their natural environment by taking part in a range of events organised by local bat groups, wildlife trusts, countryside rangers and other 16

organisations across the country? In your local area, be sure to find a bat walk over the holidays. They often take place at dusk. Bat walk leaders have equipment specialised to hear the bat’s echoes and cries, called a bat detector.

Smithfield Street Party

This August Bank Holiday Sunday (25 August), don’t miss Smithfield Street Party: A Beastly Adventure. It’s a fantastical free street party where the animals top the bill. Learn how to dance like a bee, look up and watch extraordinary aerialists fly through the sky, transform your perspectives with free running classes and animal amusements and learn how to care for the animals that live alongside us. In this year’s take on this annual festival, all London’s animals – past, present or future, large and small, rare and familiar – will be taking over the streets around Smithfield Market for one day only, to teach humans the secret ways of their world. Imagined, visible or overlooked, larger than life or miniscule, all the animals will make an appearance at an unmissable party full of music, performances, workshops, games and play with 10,000 human party animals in one of Smithfield’s wildest events of the year. Inspired by the original Bartholomew’s Fair, Smithfield Street Party invites all of London’s families, including their four legged canine members, to come and take part in a day full of free beastly fun. A host of activities for all ages will animate the ancient streets throughout the day including bands, choirs, craft market stalls, zinemaking workshops, history tours with the City Guides, dog shows, fun fair rides and lots of surprises.

Summer Holiday Activities at the Geffrye Museum

Have fun, get creative and spread a little love this summer at the Geffrye Museum in Kingsland Road, Hoxton. Spend some quality family time exploring the theme of kindness through free hands-on art, craft, digital and multi-sensory activities, family tours and trails in the Geffrye Museum’s beautiful gardens. Inspired by Charles Dickens’ boy-hero Pip and his journey of selfdiscovery in the novel Great Expectations, children will be encouraged to create small acts of kindness while learning about Victorian family life – having fun and making a difference at the same time. Families are welcome to stay on afterwards and enjoy a performance of Great Expectations by Free Theatre UK (free/pay what you can). As the museum is closed for redevelopment, most activities will take place on the lawn or under canvas. Light refreshments will be available to buy or you could bring a picnic to eat on the lawn. Activities are for children aged 2-12 and their families. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Check the full schedule from July at www.geffrye-museum.org.uk.

Climbing boulders, Jurassic dragonflies, golden reeds and good food are what summer memories at RSPB Rainham Marshes nature reserve are made of. RSPB Rainham Marshes is situated on the edge of London and welcomes families all year round. Throughout the summer, the reserve runs self-led and organised activities to help families find and learn about the creatures that live on the reserve. Families can hire a bike and explore the river wall. Kids’ bikes and trailers are available. Go along and try out the reserve’s bouldering site or playground before refuelling in the award-winning café. This summer families can have an adventure under the stars and stay overnight on the nature reserve as part of the RSPB’s Big Wild Sleepout on Saturday 3 August. There is plenty to see all year round on the reserve’s trails. Buggyfriendly paths and boardwalks lead visitors to the reserve’s four hides, offering key vantage points to see lapwing, heron and perhaps a dazzling kingfisher patrolling the pools. Musical Theatre Summer Schools with a Twist

Go along and join the award-winning Anna Fiorentini Theatre and Film School this summer and explore West End to Broadway followed by Horrible Histories. We all love to learn about history, but some of us find it a bore. The only trouble with history is that they’re not here anymore. We can only look at history through papers, online and apps, But what if we brought history back to life, through singing, dancing & facts? We can visit the court of Henry VIII, the king obsessed with power. Of his poor six wives, only one survived, and two were beheaded at the Tower. The Great Fire of London of 1666, as Samuel Pepys likes to tell, The smallest spark that lit up the dark and made London as ‘hot as hell’. And what about Queen Elizabeth I, whose teeth have never been forgotten? Green and black with toxic gaps, and her breath was oh so rotten. Vile Victorians, old London streets, rotten to the core, Kings and queens and tragedies and maybe the Civil War. This is just the start of what we will have in store, A week of fun for everyone, with perhaps a little more. There’s singing, dance and dramas, and a little comedy too, A week of history brought to life especially by you. 20

Forest School

Forest is a well-rounded, happy, busy school offering excellent academic provision and a full range of co-curricular opportunities, with almost 1350 boys and girls from 4–18. The school believe that their combination of single-sex and mixed educational opportunities – the diamond structure – gives pupils the best of all worlds. They thrive on it. Within the Prep School and Senior School, the form and house system means that pupils are looked after in small units of care. In the Pre-Prep (4–7) and Sixth Form (16–18), boys and girls are taught together, but between the ages of 7 and 16 pupils are taught in separate classes, to maximise the benefits of single-sex teaching for children of that age. Life is not a single-sex environment, however, and a child’s social development involves learning to form relationships with a wide range of people. This is where Forest’s diamond structure comes into its own. Outside the classroom, for example, boys and girls of all ages mix in a wide range of co-curricular activities. Brothers and sisters share the same school in a way that single-sex teaching would otherwise preclude. Forest School benefits from a tremendous location. It’s a city school with thirty acres of grounds surrounded by ancient forest on the very edge of London, all creating a wonderfully diverse community. You will find details of future opportunities to visit Forest on their website, www.forest.org.uk. Don’t miss the open day on 21 September, 8.30am-1pm.

Mini Hoteliers at Anantara Layan Phuket Resort Hotels are fascinating places, especially for young inquisitive minds. Offering a behind-thescenes insight into the workings of hotel life,Anantara Layan Phuket Resort in Thailand has launched an immersive Junior Hotelier programme for children aged between 8 and 12. The imaginative programme follows in the footsteps of the resort team as they make the preparations for new guests arriving at the luxurious Layan Residences by Anantara, located on the hillside above the resort. The experience starts with a short tour of one of the 15 Layan Residences, while shadowing a villa butler, learning the traditional Thai greeting for new guests and hearing their fun facts and anecdotes of hotel life. The young guests will be shown how to make the perfect bed, before getting creative with animal towel art. Like origami but with towels, they will learn the skill of creating jungle animals, including elephants and monkeys, which will be left on the bed for the new guests. In the villa kitchen, budding cooks will help the chef prepare for the meal that evening. From mixing and kneading dough for pastries, to using ingredients such as rice noodles, coconut oil and prawns to make a traditional Pad Thai. The trainee chefs will have a chance to taste their dishes while learning about the ingredients they are using. No hotel is complete without a signature cocktail and following their cooking class the junior hoteliers will also get busy making a mocktail at the open air bar by the infinity pool. Combining different fruits such as pineapple, mango and papaya, the mini mixologists will work together with the bartender to create their own fruit concoction or mock-jito. The experience will end by following in the footsteps of the villa butler as they demonstrate the art of a relaxing turndown service, leaving slippers out and a treat on the pillow. The Junior Hotelier programme costs £60 per child and lasts two to three hours, for children aged 8 to 12.A stay at Anantara Layan Phuket Resort starts from £350 per night in a pool villa including tax and breakfast.A two bedroom Layan Residence starts from £1,689 per night with tax, breakfast, airport transfer, non-alcoholic minibar and fast track immigration. Timeless Tanzania Safari

Acacia Africa’s seven day Timeless Tanzania is part of the operator’s Short Safaris and Treks collection, the tour visiting both the Serengeti and the Olduvai Gorge. Tanzania’s Northern Circuit parks and reserves are home to some of East Africa’s highest concentrations of wildlife, including the Big Five, but also many other equally interesting species of game and fascinating birdlife. The tour takes you on safari not only to see the animals in their natural habitats, but to enjoy the magnificent landscapes and memorable sunrises and sunsets. The journey commences with a scheduled shuttle service from Nairobi to Tanzania’s safari town, Arusha. Highlights of the trip include a visit to Lake Manyara National Park. Make your way out of the busy town through coffee plantations before reaching the open plains. Upon reaching Lake Manyara you will have your first game drive looking for some of the amazing wild animals that are native to the region. Leaving Lake Manyara behind, you will travel through to the town of Karatu and on into the highlands. The road hugs the rim of the Ngorongo crater before dropping down towards the Serengeti plains. After spending the afternoon game driving, guests will have a relaxing evening at their comfortable lodge. After a restful night, the following day starts early for a morning game drive as this is the best time to see the animals. After lunch the safari leaves the park and heads back towards the Ngorongoro Crater and the lodge perched on the rim. From Manyara, the trip drops down the escarpment to the floor of the Great Rift Valley and heads onto the hidden gem, Tarangire National Park. Inspire them to explore science with…

Professor Brian Cox Primary Times teams up with Professor Brian Cox OBE to discuss the importance of science for children, his own childhood inspirations, and his exciting world tour ‘Universal: Adventures in Space and Time’ How did you first become interested in physics and astronomy? Was there a book or famous figure who sparked your passion? I was always interested in astronomy as far back as I remember, and I think the reason for that is it’s the simplest science. You can do it without anything, you can go out into your back garden and look at the stars, you can see the constellations change from month to month, you can see the planets shift into position. In terms of a famous figure, there was Carl Sagan who made his series Cosmos when I was 11. It was this idea that these points of light in the sky are other worlds. The great thing about astronomy is that it carries your imagination away and you will never learn everything there is to learn about the universe. Our aim is to get the nation’s children inspired by science. For you, why is it important for children to take an interest? Science is above all else a way of thinking, it’s a way of celebrating curiosity. The central idea is that we don’t know everything. It’s often easy to be afraid of not knowing, when actually it’s the most

exciting thing, because then you can go and find out. You might be the person who finds out for the first time whether there is life on Mars. I think that science teaches us to think, nature forces us to think in a particular way, and that’s the key educational value of science. What advice would you give to children who are aspiring to work in science? I would say stay excited and stay curious. Understand that if you want to be a scientist you can be. It’s easy to think you have to be a strange genius to be a scientist. There’s a really famous story about Einstein going into a school and saying “When I was your age, I was no Einstein”. Can you tell us a little bit more about your upcoming world tour ‘Universal: Adventures in Space and Time’? At one level it is huge, high-resolution screens showing these amazing pictures from the Hubble Space Telescope. But also, we simulated a black hole. We used the techniques that were used to develop the film Interstellar to simulate what it would be like to go and fly up to, orbit and dive into a black hole, and what

we know about what happens. So, it is I hope a spectacular experience that’s also designed to make us think about our place in the universe. What top tips could you give to parents who are trying to introduce science into their home for their children? Science is about doing science ultimately. You get excited about science by doing it, and that’s why I think astronomy is great. You can get one of those apps on your phone that show you what the stars are, you’d be surprised by how easy it is to recognise what that is in the sky. And I believe that’s what it is to deliver a little bit of wonder to your children. I can’t think of anything that’s easier and more rewarding than just that.
