Tasty Eyeballs Recipe!

These white chocolate covered little cakes are eye-poppingly good. The easiest way to make them is with a cakepop mould, which you can pick up from stores or online.

Ingredients (makes approx. 20 eyeballs) For the cake 70g superfine caster sugar 70g softened butter A few drops of vanilla extract 2 eggs 70g self-raising flour ½ tsp baking powder Cake-pop mould For the decoration Wooden skewers 200g white candy melts/ white chocolate Blue, green, red, and black food colouring gel Horrid hint: if you

don’t have a cake-pop mould, you can bake the cake in a normal pan, break the cake into crumbs then roll with buttercream into balls.

Method 1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C). Using a

wooden spoon, cream the butter and sugar together in a mixing bowl. Add the vanilla extract, then slowly beat in the eggs. Fold in the flour and baking powder.

2. Grease your cake-pop mould with butter. Use a teaspoon to add the mixture to the bottom of the mould, filling it to the top. Place the other side of the mould on top. Follow us on Twitter - @PT_LondonSandE

3. With an adult’s help, put the cake pops in the oven and bake for 20 minutes. Allow to cool a little, then remove the top of the mould and release each cake pop onto a cooling rack. Leave until completely cool. 4. Push a wooden skewer into each cake

pop. Place the candy melts or chocolate in a microwavable bowl and heat in 30 second blasts in the microwave until melted. Dip and roll the cooled cake pops in the candy or spoon it over them until they are nicely coated.

5. Put the skewers upright and leave to

completely set. If you use white chocolate it may take a bit longer to set.

6. Dip a paintbrush into the blue or green food

coloring and paint a circle onto the cake pops. You could also paint some brown if you like. Leave to dry for about an hour. You may need to do more than one coat to get a good effect. Horrid hint: You could use royal icing instead to cover the eyeballs. Dip them in the same way and allow to harden before painting on the food coloring.

7. Add a black pupil with black food coloring, then some fine red veins. Remove from the skewer to finish. For this and plenty more scarily yummy recipes and to find some horribly fun craft activities see The Horrible Craft Book by Laura Minter and Tia Williams, available online and from all good bookshops for £12.99. Thanks to Gill for testing out the recipe for our office too - they were delicious! 14 Oct - 24 Nov ‘19

The Thames is Full of Life

The River Thames may look like murky water, but it is in fact thriving with life, home to many amazing animals born and raised in the river. Seals, porpoises, eels and seahorses, to name a few, all call the river their home. The tidal Thames runs from Teddington Lock, in the west of London, to Gravesend and into the North Sea. It is home to more than 100 fish species, many of which are commercially and ecologically important. A number of these marine species use the Thames at different times of their life cycle – some as a nursery habitat when they are juveniles and as a safe haven to spawn (lay eggs) when they mature and some as a pathway between freshwater habitats and the open seas – making this area absolutely vital to the success of UK fish species and their conservation. ZSL, the Zoological Society of London, is working to ensure the river stays full of life. Together with partners and volunteers they are making great progress. From being declared biologically dead in the 1950s, the River Thames is now a hub of life thanks to dedicated conservation efforts. Photo credit: Graham Mee SE RSPB

A new celebrity has taken to the skies above the home of the London 2012 Games. Famous for chasing unwanted pigeons away from Wimbledon during the tennis championships, Rufus the Harris Hawk is bringing his bird scaring skills to east London. Boasting over 10,000 followers on Twitter, the world-famous hawk will be patrolling the skies above the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park once a fortnight. Known as hawking, the process of sending Rufus flying around the Park is an environmentally friendly way to manage unwanted birds nesting where they shouldn’t. And with a four-foot wingspan and razor-sharp talons it’s easy to see why other birds, such as pigeons, would be intimidated by him and choose to move on. At the Park, Rufus will be flying freely, learning over time where pest birds like to settle. As birds are very territorial, and a hawk is much larger than a pigeon, Rufus will stop the pest birds nesting, so over time visitors will start to see fewer pigeons and gulls in the Park. The Green-flag award-winning Park is free to enter and home to fun parklands, secluded gardens and tranquil waterways as well as community events and elite sport in world-famous venues.

Join the Planet Protectors

Friends of the Earth are launching a new club to celebrate and inspire young activists. Aimed at children aged six to ten years old, Friends of the Earth’s new Planet Protectors Club will help young people join the fight to save the planet. By visiting www.friendsoftheearth.co.uk and signing up for a monthly donation, budding Planet Protectors can join a club of environmental activists and receive a welcome pack to get them started on their journey as a climate activist. Along with activist tools such as plastic-free stickers and an activity book, the pack also celebrates those children already doing amazing things, like Elliott Powell. Elliott is a young climate activist who went with his mum to the ‘Mothers Rise Up’ protest march in May, where he made a speech asking the government to stop climate change. Elliott who is just starting secondary school, told Primary Times, “I’m an activist because I want to have a future. It’s more of a problem to children than the adults because this is the world we’re growing up in. We need the adults to act now before it’s too late. We need to do a lot of things and it might sound hard but it’s actually very simple. All we need to do is to take it seriously. My tip - don’t pressurise yourself to do the biggest thing ever. You don’t have to be the next Greta Thunberg. Just do something.”

Halloween Fun with the Epping Ongar Railway

A Design-Led Christmas Market – SAMPLE Christmas

The ‘Ghost Train’ runs on the Epping Ongar Railway for four zany days in October from ‘North Weird’ Station when this former part of the Underground is taken over by ghouls and zombies. The owls from the Epping Forest Hawk and Owl Sanctuary will be flying in as well. Look out too for the ‘Ghost Bus’!

The Halloween Specials are a regular feature at the Railway. The staff and volunteers always ensure that the Ghost Train is good fun and this year is no different. The buses pick up passengers from right outside Epping Tube station and whisk you to North Weird. There, you’ll find a children’s magic show, a disco, a bar and Halloween games. Recent paranormal investigations have shown there could be ghosts at the Epping Ongar Railway, but all children have a chance of finding them on the Ghost Hunt! Of course there’s also a full-sized Ghost Train to Ongar with its gruesome graveyard. Travel on the train is not for the faint-hearted. For more details on the EOR visit www.eorailway.co.uk/events/ halloween. Trains are running on 26, 27, 30 and 31 October. Adult fares are £16 and children £12.

Virtual Reality Underwater Experience Londoners can dive beneath the surface of the River Thames to see sharks, seals and eels this autumn without even getting their hair wet, as international conservation charity ZSL launches a brand-new virtual reality experience at London Bridge City. More than fifty years after being declared ‘biologically dead’ the River Thames is now one of London’s best kept wildlife secrets. This virtual reality experience is designed to show Londoners more. Thanks to dedicated conservation efforts, an astonishing 120 fish species now call the Thames home. Seals, seahorses and oyster live in the Thames, alongside critically endangered European eels and smelt (a very small fish, which smells of cucumber). Many of these amazing species are born and nurtured in the river, before they venture out into the ocean. Users will stand on the bank of the River while looking through a custom-made view finder to take a deep dive into the River Thames, making the invisible, visible. Guided by narration from Good Morning Britain’s broadcast meteorologist Laura Tobin, users will learn about the distinctive features of the river’s wildlife as they explore. ZSL’s Thames Virtual Reality Experience is free and open to all. The public can also donate to ZSL’s conservation work after taking part in the experience. For more information, visit www.zsl.org. Happy Halloween and More Days Out...

First Railway Ramblers to Hit the Trail at Epping A family of Primary Times readers from Balham have been the first to take advantage of the new Epping Ongar Railway Rambler. The ticket has been designed to encourage families from London to take a single journey by heritage bus and train to Ongar and return by walking a 7½ mile section of the scenic Essex Way. Early in September, Alison StewartPaterson and her family were the first Railway Ramblers! They caught the bus from outside Epping Tube station on their way to Ongar. Her family had travelled by tube to Epping for the bus to North Weald and then by train to Ongar. It took the family a leisurely 5 hours to get back to Epping, stopping at two pubs, spotting wildlife and farm animals and taking in the scenery.

Alison said, “We saw the offer in an email earlier in the week and thought the walk would be a great way of extending the summer for us. The boys loved spotting wildlife, looking at bugs and were delighted to be so close to the horses and sheep. It was a perfect family day out of London. The route was clearly mapped out and easy to follow, and we loved the magic of the forest! Once we reached Epping station we were tired out but had a great sense of achievement!”

Small and Scaries at RSPB Rainham Marshes Across the UK, RSPB reserves are going wild for Halloween. At RSPB Rainham Marshes discover creepy crawlies, small and scaries, and things that go bump in the night. Halloween is nearly here, and whilst much of the world’s wonderful wildlife is hunkering down and hibernating, in the depths of the mystical marshes there remain many beasties to see. Head along for Halloween Pond Dipping during half term on 22 - 24 and 29 - 31 October from 10.30am - 12noon or 1.30 – 3pm and investigate what creatures you can find in the ponds. Tickets cost £2 per child (£1.50 for RSPB members) and accompanying adults are free, plus reserve entry fee. Booking is strongly advised. RSPB Rainham Marshes will also have Wild Things at Halloween where you can hire a Spooky Wildlife Explorer Bag and wear fear-inspiring fancy dress and your weirdest wellies, as you follow the spooky trail onto the reserve, available during open hours from Saturday 19 October - Sunday 3 November. Bag hire costs £3.

The Railway Rambler is designed to encourage people to travel to this very rural part of Essex by public transport and the walk from Ongar takes in some lovely sights including Greensted Church, the world’s oldest wooden church. Passengers are encouraged to enjoy this part of Essex, on the edge of London, and to visit the medieval town of Chipping Ongar.

For more information, visit www.rspb.org.uk/PTRai or call 01708 899 851.

Dean Walton, the Railway’s General Manager, told Primary Times, “I was delighted to meet Alison and her family at the start of their Railway Ramble. This new ticket is opening up Ongar and the surrounding countryside for day trippers from London in a win-win for the local economy and the Railway. I was so pleased when she told me what a lovely day the family had had.”

“Until 1994 the Central Line ran all the way to Ongar, now the line has been put to use as a heritage tourist attraction bringing much needed visitors to Ongar. Education News

Little Box of Books

A recent CLPE (Centre for Literacy in Primary Education) report (Reflecting Realities – Survey of Ethnic Diversity in UK Children’s Books) showed that only 1% of children’s books published in the UK in 2017 featured a Black, Asian or Minority Ethnic (BAME) main character and only 4% had a BAME character at all, despite 33% of UK schoolchildren being identified as having BAME origins. In response to this, Lynsey Pollard has set up ‘Little Box of Books’, a company that curates collections of children’s books for schools and families that are inclusive and representative. Lynsey and the team at Little Box of Books work with top publishers to source books that show diversity in race and culture, family set up and socio-economic background, that smash gender and disability stereotypes. They are on a mission to get them into as many schools as possible to help children better understand the world and their place in it. They provide books for EYFS, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. Boxes start from £99.99 for 20 titles but bigger, bespoke collections are available, with big discounts for interested schools. For more information, contact lynsey@ littleboxofbooks.co.uk or head to www.littleboxofbooks.co.uk.

Bancroft’s is an exciting, diverse and adventurous community, rooted in northeast London, but connected to the world. Bancroft’s provides a great environment for learning with wellequipped spacious libraries, classrooms, laboratories and study areas, large multi-purpose sports hall, adaptable performing arts space, art studios, indoor swimming pool and 17 acres of playing fields.
