World Book Day is the registered charity behind the world’s biggest annual celebration of children’s books, with a mission to offer every child and young person the opportunity to read and love books. It is sponsored by National Book Tokens and supported generously each year by the publishing industry, book trade, authors and illustrators. Every year, with a host of publishers, World Book Day curates a list of bespoke £1 books for children and young people across the UK and Ireland, which they can choose for

free at their local bookshop or supermarket using their £1 World Book Day book token. This year’s list of £1 books is the most diverse to date and packed with best-selling authors and illustrators. International bestseller Anthony Horowitz returns to the secret world of MI6 with new classified files from Alex Rider. Onjali Q Raúf, founder of Making Herstory and multiaward-winning author of The Boy at the Back of the Class, shares The Day We Met the Queen. For older readers there is empowering new non-fiction from author of You Are Awesome, award-winning journalist and former Olympian, Matthew Syed. The Kissing Booth (one of Netflix’s most successful films of 2018) continues in The Kissing Booth: Road Trip! by Beth Reekles, and Split, a powerful new story by the author of I Am Thunder and winner of the Branford Boase award, Muhammad Khan, will also be available. Share a Story is the theme at the heart of a three year World Book Day campaign, encouraging parents and carers to go beyond dressing up to read and share stories with their children for ten minutes every day. Sharing stories together – anywhere, anytime – for just ten minutes a day has long-lasting effects on a child’s future. World Book Day aims to inspire new reading habits for adults and children, underlining just how important this shared time is. The organisation is bringing together some of the most influential people in the country - from celebrities and TV presenters, to politicians and sports stars - to promote reading for pleasure and asking them to #ShareaStory on 5 March. The day also sees children bringing books to life through an array of organised events and activities in schools, bookshops, libraries and at home. World Book Day will be taking place on the 5 March. Bigger, Bolder and Hattier! Save the date for Wear A Hat Day on Friday 27 March as the UK once again goes hat crazy for a good cause. The charity is inviting the nation to take part in their hat-themed fundraising events in order to help find a cure for brain tumours, the biggest cancer killer of children and adults under the age of 40. Brain Tumour Research is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year, so there’s never been a more important time for schools and families to get together. This will ensure Wear A Hat Day is not only great fun but is also seen as a powerful vehicle of hope for the thousands living with a brain tumour every year. Amazing events from schools across the UK have included a world record attempt for the longest line of hats, millinery-themed fancy dress days, hat-themed cake sales, hat-tastic parties, brilliantly hatty colouring competitions and so much more. Primary Times is proudly supporting Wear A Hat Day 2020, offering a prize of £100 in book tokens for the school which raises the most money per pupil. Konnie Huq Supports the Where’s Wally? Fun Run at the Olympic Park
In an exciting Olympic year, on 15 March, the annual Where’s Wally? Fun Run will be coming to the iconic Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park for the first time. Supported by Walker Books, the home of the London Olympics will see hundreds of runners, families and book lovers dressed up as the popular children’s book character, Wally, all running, jogging or walking to raise money for the National Literacy Trust. The event is a fun day out for the whole family and includes a 10k and 5k run with a 1k version for kids under 12. What’s more, families will also be able to meet children’s author, and former Blue Peter presenter, Konnie Huq. Konnie will be at the Olympic Park on race day to cheer on the runners and sign copies of her debut children’s book, Cookie and the Most Annoying Boy in the World. Last year, around 1,000 participants aged 10 months to 84 years donned their stripes and made their way around Clapham Common to raise over £30,000 for the charity. All proceeds from the event help to change the life stories of disadvantaged children in the UK through literacy. Konnie Huq described the day to Primary Times as, “What a fun and fab way to incorporate both exercise and reading - I can’t wait to see and cheer on all the ‘Wallys’ running! It’ll be a vision in stripes!” Find out more and register for the 2020 Where’s Wally? Fun Run at www.literacytrust.org.uk/.

Pupils become Agents of Change
Children at St Mary’s C of E Primary School in Walthamstow have been delivering messages to their families as well as local businesses and their local MP Stella Creasy as agents of change, highlighting what’s needed to protect the planet. The initiative was inspired by the school’s Church of England status, encouraging pupils to be courageous and inspire social change in their community and in the wider world. Each class chose their own campaign. One Year 2 class wrote to local shops and cafés asking them not to waste food. They offered suggestions including making surplus fruit into smoothies, baking over-ripe bananas into cakes, freezing food to preserve it, composting and donating surplus to the homeless and food banks. Other Year 2 and Year 4 classes even asked their Headteacher, Mr Matthew O’Brien, to provide compost bins in the school kitchen and paper recycling bins in every classroom. Mr O’Brien told Primary Times, “It was fantastic to see the children pursuing their own plans and taking some early steps in becoming active citizens, making a positive contribution to the society they live in.” For more information, please visit www.plasticoceans.uk, www. wrap.org.uk and www.stmaryscofe.org.

Happy 20th Birthday Perform
Primary Times spoke to founder, Lucy Quick, who told us, “Working with children as a musical theatre actress inspired me to create a drama school that wasn’t about talent or auditions but instead had child development at its heart. From our very first class in Primrose Hill in 2000, we’ve used performing arts to develop what we call the 4 C’s - confidence, communication, coordination and concentration. Today, we have 472 schools across the South East and West of England, over 250 teachers and almost 8000 children attending weekly - we’ve come a very long way. The amazing feedback we receive from parents about the visible difference our classes make to their children’s confidence and self-esteem makes us feel really proud and so pleased that we took that big first step in 2000. We’re not franchised and run all classes ourselves and, over the past 20 years, I’m most proud of my teachers. They are the most inspirational bunch of talented and enthusiastic people you’ll ever meet.” Try a FREE, no-obligation drama class in Chingford, South Woodford, Victoria Park, Walthamstow, Wanstead, Gidea Park, Hornchurch, Chigwell or Upminster. Visit www. perform.org.uk/try to book your free trial. Quote PTEL130320 for a £40 introductory discount when you book before 13 March.

Win ‘The Boy with the Saucepan Hat’ Book There’s really only one word to describe The Boy with the Saucepan Hat by Martyn Harvey and that’s ‘FUN’. When Oliver Todd wakes up with a saucepan stuck on his head, he is obviously a bit cheesed off. But when he gets to the hospital Emergency Room, things go from bad to worse. The book is written in charming rhyming couplets and is really funny. Younger children will enjoy having it read to them while older ones will have a lovely time reading it for themselves. They’ll have to prise it away from their mums and dads first though! The Boy with the Saucepan Hat is available online and in High Street bookshops for £5.99. We have four copies of The Boy with the Saucepan Hat to give away to Primary Times readers. For your chance to win one tell us what Oliver gets stuck on his head. For details of how to enter, please see the bottom of this page.

The years have been kind to Maleficent and Aurora. Their relationship, born of heartbreak, revenge and, ultimately, love, has flourished. Yet the hatred between man and the fairies still exists. Maleficent: Mistress of Evil is available on DVD from 17 February. Primary Times have five Maleficent DVDs to give away to five lucky readers. For your chance to win, simply tell us the name of Maleficent’s goddaughter. For details of how to enter, please see the bottom of this page.

Nick Shar
Be inspired to illustrate with…
Nick Sharratt Primary Times teams up with renowned illustrator, Nick Sharratt, to show the wonders of stretching a child’s imagination through drawing
Nick Sharratt is the artist behind hundreds of beloved children’s book characters created by authors including Jacqueline Wilson, Julia Donaldson, Jeremy Strong, as well as timeless fairy-tale characters and characters of his own creation – his personal favourites being Timothy Pope and his dad in ‘Shark in the Park’. As an advocate of creative expression, Nick has always had a passion for drawing. “I’ve loved making pictures for as long as I can remember. It always felt incredibly natural and enjoyable for me. I was the artist of the class at school, and I was very happy with that role!” Whether it was for school or a competition he’d found on a box of cereal, Nick took drawing seriously and encourages other children to do the same. “Young children are brilliant at picture making, but they can quickly become self – conscious about it. I think everyone has the potential to draw. It’s
a brilliant activity to do; it involves all kinds of thought processes, and as with everything, you have to work at it if you want to improve. I used to be a perfectionist and start a drawing, do a few lines, then turn the page and start again. I’d go through a whole pad that way! But I taught myself to complete my pictures and even if the drawing was not quite what I’d expected, it gave me a sense of achievement.” Starting out as a magazine illustrator, Nick has now illustrated over a hundred books and written more than fifty of his own. But, how does he do it? “By the time I’ve read the manuscript, I’ve got a clear idea of what the character will look like as it seeps into the story. When I’m working with Jacqueline (Wilson), I just try and create a visual interpretation from Jacky’s description. There will always be mentions of the character’s size, hair, dressing style etc within the story. I spend a lot of time thinking about hairstyles for my
characters, as hair can really reflect the character’s nature.” Having achieved his childhood aspiration of becoming a professional artist, Nick encourages children to find joy in art too. “It’s so important to find time for drawing and story-telling at a young age, as more than anything else it’s fun! It’s a fabulous way to stretch your imagination as a child. “When I used to go into schools it was brilliant to see a classroom with art on the walls. I think it’s good for children to be shown how to draw things by their parents or teachers or via YouTube. There are lots of videos demonstrating how to draw a character sharing top tips such as starting with the shape of the face. Group drawing activities are also fantastic, where everyone contributes to a picture so it’s a team effort.” Illustrations in books are a great way to grip the reader and create a memorable story. “When I think of the books I had as a child, the words are a bit hazy but the pictures come back sharply in my memory. Children interact with visual images in a really direct and intense way and it’s amazing to think that my illustrations might be enjoyed like that.” Nick’s top tip for aspiring artists is simple, keep drawing! Discover more of Nick’s tips and tricks from his YouTube films and book ‘How to Draw the world of Jacqueline Wilson’ (Random House Children’s Books) and keep up to date with his latest books at www.nicksharratt.com
