Hayley and Miriam have spent the last few weeks finding all the hundreds of listings that we have published. We’re sorry if we couldn’t publish everything we are sent but the summer magazine is our biggest of the year and with so much going on we simply run out of space. As many of you will know, we publish comprehensive Open Day tables in the September magazine in our Choosing your New School feature. These are aimed at Year 5 and Year 6 pupils but are handy for everyone to think about. Do look out for that magazine which will be published on 4 September.

Have a fantastic summer

Lauren Child, artist and highly-acclaimed author and illustrator of the bestselling and award-winning Charlie and Lola and Clarice Bean picture books as well as the Ruby Redfort novels, has been crowned the 10th Waterstones Children’s Laureate. Child was presented with her medal from outgoing Laureate, Chris Riddell. Child, a former artist’s assistant to Damien Hirst, is celebrated not only for creating her own books, but translating them into other media, most significantly in her role as associate producer of global hit television series Charlie and Lola. Having been inspired by many different expressive mediums in her work, Child now wants to forge links between the world of children’s literature and other art forms such as fine art, film, music, television and design. The role of the Waterstones Children’s Laureate is awarded every two years to an eminent author or illustrator of children’s books to celebrate outstanding achievement in their field and to recognise the important contribution children’s literature makes to cultural life. Lauren Child will now have the award until June 2019 when it will be passed on, also marking 20 years since the award’s creation.

Summit Tuition Summer School

With the six week holiday fast approaching it is essential to find alternative ways to entertain and stimulate our children’s minds. We should be catering for more than just their social life over the summer months. Children can lose an average of two months’ worth of knowledge over the summer if their brains are not actively engaged in educational activities. Summit Tuition can offer you the best solution to this problem. Their summer school runs for 3 weeks of the summer holiday.Your child can attend a two hour session three times per week. Summit Tuition has put together a programme of work designed to focus on your children’s weak areas and prepare them for the coming school year.

Teachers from schools across the UK gathered at Stratford’s Discover Centre in June to explore new ways of using technology to boost literacy and maintain creativity in the classroom. The fast-paced event saw 80 educators come together at East London’s award-winning storytelling museum for a ‘Day of Discovery’, where they shared the latest ideas and tech tools for inspiring a love of stories, language and reading.

Joined by children’s author and illustrator Paul Stickland – Dinosaur Roar, Swamp Stomp – and leading Canadian tech blogger Dean Shareski, the teachers discovered how new media and technology can trigger children’s interest in storymaking, and improve learning outcomes for EAL and SEN Learn to Swim - Love to Swim pupils. Summer Camps Deborah Day Theatre School

The Deborah Day Theatre School has been operating in the London Borough of Newham for the past thirty five years, offering classes in Dance, (tap, modern, jazz, ballet, hip hop, street jazz, acrobatics, lyrical, contemporary) Drama and Singing. The school is inclusive and offers classes to children from the age of 3 to late teens. They have found that if pupils wish to make the performing arts a career, they are trained to a high enough standard to further their education at professional colleges/ university by the age of 16/18years depending on which courses they have chosen to undertake. Whilst attending the school pupils are offered the opportunity to study the Imperial Society Teachers of Dance exams (from the age of 6) which are all QCA accredited. They are also given the opportunity to perform in front of live audiences at local theatres, with live musicians, sets, and costumes and to appear at the Newham Town Show, local and national dance festivals.

mps and Courses If very talented, pupils are encouraged to apply for additional ballet classes with the Royal Ballet. There is a very stringent audition process and to date they have had three pupils successfully accomplish this. Pupils are also given the opportunity to audition for West End shows, film and television where the school has had a high success rate. Children have appeared in West End shows such as Lion King, The Wizard of Oz, Evita, Billy Elliott, Les Miserables, The Snowman, The Bodyguard, Kinky Boots, and Motown. The children, as well as learning performing arts, gain life skills from attending the school. They gain confidence and are able to present themselves positively in all aspects of life. Anyone interested in joining the school should call 020 8502 6866 or email info@ddtst.com.

How Music Benefits Children There is a wealth of evidence that shows learning a musical instrument is beneficial for children, not just in building their musical skills but also aiding their cognitive, emotional and social development. Recent research from Dawn Rose from the University of Hertfordshire

showed that children who had started individual music lessons developed a better awareness of their ‘aim’ and ‘force’ in relation to their own motor skills as well as improving their ‘fluid intelligence’ – which is the ability to solve new problems, use logic in new situations and identify patterns. Music can have a big role to play when it comes to children’s learning. Not necessarily just in terms of intelligence, but also in terms of their physical development and social wellbeing.

Win a Captain Underpants Goody Bag! Based on the worldwide sensation and bestselling book series, Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie is released into cinemas on 24 July. It boasts an A-list cast of comedy superstars headed by Kevin Hart and Ed Helms and comes from DreamWorks Animation. This raucously subversive comedy for the entire family tells the story of two overly imaginative pranksters named George and Harold who spend their days creating comic books and dreaming up pranks. One day they accidentally hypnotise their school principal into thinking he’s a ridiculously enthusiastic, incredibly dim-witted superhero named Captain Underpants whose costume consists of underwear and a cape. As if this isn’t bad enough, their newest teacher is a disgraced evil scientist bent on exacting his revenge at their school. George, Harold and Captain Underpants must band together to thwart his evil agenda. We have five great Captain Underpants Goody Bags for five lucky readers to win. For your chance to win, tell us what Captain Underpants wears. See below for details of how to enter.

Win a Copy of AniMalcolm by David Baddiel

AniMalcolm is a laugh-out-loud adventure for every child who ever wondered what it might be like to be a bit of an animal. Malcolm doesn’t like animals, which is a problem because his family love them. Their house is full of pets. What the house is not full of is stuff Malcolm likes, such as the laptop he wanted for his birthday. The only bright spot on the horizon is the Year 6 school trip but the catch is, it’s a trip to a farm. Over the next days, Malcolm changes. With the help of a magic goat, Malcolm is transformed into a whole series of animals. He thinks differently, speaks differently and eats differently. But will he end up the same as he was before? Sometimes the hardest thing to become is yourself. We have ten signed copies of this hilarious new book for lucky Primary Times readers to win. For your chance to be a winner, tell us what magical animal helps Malcolm transform. For entry details see below.

DVDs for the Summer Beauty and the Beast

LEGO Scooby Doo: Blowout Beach Bash DVD

A Mermaid’s Tale

Smurfs: The Lost Village

Disney’s ‘Beauty and the Beast’ is a live-action adaptation of the studio’s animated classic which refashions the classic characters from the tale as old as time for a contemporary audience, staying true to the original music while updating the score with several new songs. ‘Beauty and the Beast’ is the fantastic journey of Belle, a bright, beautiful and independent young woman who is taken prisoner by a beast in his castle. Despite her fears, she befriends the castle’s enchanted staff and learns to look beyond the Beast’s hideous exterior and realise the kind heart and soul of the true Prince within. ‘Beauty and the Beast’ is out on DVD on 17 July.

12 year-old Ryan and her dad pack up their belongings and move to a seemingly quiet fishing town to live with grandfather Art. Eager to get to know his granddaughter more, Art tells Ryan local stories and myths of mermaids that live along their shores, but who have never been seen. Although her dad is a non-believer, Ryan is ready to believe in the magic hidden in her new home, and while exploring the local coves and watching a pod of playful dolphins, she meets Coral. Coral and Ryan become fast friends and it is soon clear that Coral is much more than an average girl, but in fact one of the mermaids that grandfather Art had told Ryan all about. The truth brings the two girls closer and soon they are working together to save the town as they uncover a powerful secret in this modern day fairy tale. The DVD will be available from 31 July.

Red Dog 2: The Early Years

Michael Carter recounts the story of his eleven year old self being shipped off to his grandfather’s cattle station in the remote Pilbara region of Western Australia. The DVD for Smurfs: The Lost Village is released on 11 July.

The Boss Baby

Meet a most unusual baby. He wears a suit and speaks with the voice and wit of Alec Baldwin. ‘The Boss Baby’ is a hilarious story about how a new baby’s arrival impacts a family, told from the point of view of a delightfully unreliable narrator, a wildly imaginative seven-year old named Tim. Tim is jealous of his fast-talking, briefcase-carrying baby brother. When he embarks on a mission to win back the affections of his parents, he stumbles upon a secret ploy by the CEO of Puppy Co. that threatens to destroy the balance of love in the world. Tim and his brother must come together to stop the dastardly scheme. With a sly, heartfilled message about the importance of family, The Boss Baby is an authentic and broadly appealing original comedy for all ages. DreamWorks Animation’s ‘The Boss Baby’ is released on DVD on 31 July.

Spark: a wisecracking, teenage monkey, lives on an abandoned planet with his friends Chunk the pig, a fox called Vix, and lots of tiny bugs. Thirteen years ago, power-hungry Zhong seized control of their planet Bana, wiping out Spark’s family and sending him into hiding. Now, Zhong plans to use the deadly space Kraken to destroy the entire universe, and only Spark and his ragtag gang can stop him. Spark must journey across the universe, in order to defeat the evil emperor Zhong and save the galaxy once and for all! This film from the makers of Coraline and The Nut Job will be released on DVD on 11 July.
