TFL Book Competition Winners

Transport for London (TfL) has chosen the winners of its children’s book competition which tells the stories of women in transport. The competition marked the centenary of the first women in the UK winning the right to vote. Winners Tess Kearney, now aged 8, Ibraheem Saleemi, now aged 9, and Isra Sulevani, now aged 14, have had their stories and images turned into a limited edition book, ‘Keeping London Moving’, with the winning drawing featured on the front page. They also got to take part in a behind the scenes tour of TfL, discovering the different job roles there are in the transport industry. Children had to use their imaginations to draw a picture or write a story about how women at TfL keep London moving. Tess Kearney from Wandsworth illustrated what it would be like to be a crane operator (5-7 Drawing Category). She told Primary Times, “I was very happy to hear that my picture was chosen to be used in the book. I like drawing and I think that women can do anything if they try. I’d also like to drive a crane!” Ibraheem Saleemi from Redbridge wrote about a Dial-A-Ride driver going the extra mile to ensure her customer wasn’t scared as she transported her at Halloween (7-11 Writing Category).

The six all-new projects together with Netflix’s previously announced titles feature a variety of animation styles including CG (Kris Pearn’s The Willoughbys), 2D (Nora Twomey’s My Father’s Dragon), and stop-motion (Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio). The programming is designed to meet the tastes of every member of the family - from pre-schoolers (Rajiv

Get your family well and truly into the festive spirit with a trip to see Santa on his train. Along with his elves, musicians and magicians and lots of other things to do, you’ll be part of a big friendly Christmas party on a train. The ‘Santa Special Season’ is the busiest time of the year for the Railway and brings in a substantial amount of its annual income that supports the running and restoration work of the Railway. If you can’t make the Santa Specials, the Railway has post-Christmas ‘Mince Pie Specials’ which are a great day out for all the family. A free mince pie for all adults won’t make much difference to the waistline. If that’s all too much for you, the Railway opens for the last day of season on New Year’s Day. The volunteers will then take a rest before opening for the February Half Term when it will be ‘Kids for a Quid’. For running dates and fares, please visit www.eorailway.co.uk.

Every year, educators from every corner of the UK take part in the RSPB Big Schools’ Birdwatch, turning their pupils into conservation scientists and helping the RSPB track the ups and downs of birds across the country. There are a host of different activity ideas on the website that you and your class can do, both inside and outside of the classroom, as well as resources and videos. 73,000 school children and teachers took part in the birdwatch in 2017 counting more than 100,000 birds. The blackbird remained the most common playground visitor for the ninth year in succession with over 88% of schools spotting at least one. The top three was rounded off by the starling and woodpigeon. The Birdwatch takes just one hour and teachers can pick any day during the first half of the spring term to take part. It works across a wide age and ability range and there’s plenty of flexibility to run it as simply as teachers would like either as the centrepiece of crosscurricular studies, project work, or a way to improve their outdoor space. Registration is open and the final day for results submission is the 22 February. After this the RSPB will share the results of your surveys so your class can see how their research is contributing. Hitting the High Notes

There is a real buzz in the Music Department at Woodford Green Preparatory School. With nearly 200 children learning an instrument, the school is a vibrant place. It is becoming better known that music

OPEN DAY

helps a child’s development in many ways. Music helps children to make connections between creative and analytical thinking. It also helps develop the ability to process and retain information and improves a child’s hand-ear-eye coordination. At Woodford Green, they aim for all of their pupils to develop a love of music, an appreciation of it and a sense of community within the department and the school. They nurture children to develop musical language and knowledge and key skills that will aid their all-round educational learning. Performing is a key part of being a musician. At Woodford Green Preparatory School there are opportunities to take part in choirs, orchestra, jazz band, brass group, string ensemble, guitar ensemble, saxophone group or just play solos during assembly. All musicians are welcome to participate in ensembles even if they learn outside school. Many children develop ad hoc groups by taking the initiative and organising themselves. There are concerts both formal and informal, carol services, competitions and festivals, all of which are supported by a team of peripatetic music teachers offering tuition on a wide spectrum of orchestral instruments, piano and voice. Music is a creative, yet logical, subject. Through music, all their children are warmly invited to develop a love of life, a feeling of acceptance, and a sense of fun. Go along and see Woodford Green’s Music Department at their Open Morning on Saturday 2 February. Please register your interest via the website www.wgprep.co.uk.

Listen Out for Owls The British Trust for Ornithology is asking the great British public to participate in a national study of Tawny Owls and their calling behaviour by listening out for them this autumn and winter. Tawny Owl populations are thought to be in decline and the species has recently been added to the Amber List of Birds of Conservation Concern. The Tawny Owl is arguably our best known owl. Even if you have never seen one you will probably recognise the ‘twit-twoo’ call uttered in harmony by a pair of Tawny Owls. The call of the female is an eerie ‘kewick’ and that of the male in reply is a shivering, ‘whoo’. Put together and you get ‘kewick-whoo’ or put another way, ‘twit-twoo’. Anyone can participate, and parents, teachers and children are asked to listen out for calling Tawny Owls from their garden, local park or piece of woodland. Register online at www.bto.org/owls or email gbw@bto.org for more information. The survey runs until 31 March 2019. You don’t have to commit to listening every week, but you’ll be providing valuable data by recording for as many weeks as you can. It is just as important, if you take part, to tell BTO if you don’t hear an owl. They will then know where there aren’t any owls and you can consider yourself a ‘zero hero’. 18

Family Travel Ideas Palazzo Leone, Montelparo, Le Marche

Omni Penn Hotel, Pittsburgh

The Adventure Creators – The Pyrenees

A Hobbit Adventure in Suffolk

The little-known area of Le Marche is what the Italians describe as ‘all of Italy in one region.’ For families, there are brilliant museums, walking trails, incredible caves, and beautiful beaches, whilst the fabulous boutique hotel Palazzo Leone in Montelparo can arrange truffle hunting trips and offers pizza making. Southern Le Marche is a treasure trove of hidden gems, an area full of stunning landscapes as well as being welcoming, peaceful and away from mass tourism. Families can learn about Roman Civilization at the excellent museum and partially restored temple at Monte Rinaldo or the archeologically excavated town of Urbisaglia. Both sites are small and therefore ideal for holding the attention of children. Palazzo Leone is located in the tiny medieval hamlet of Montelparo with amazing views across the Le Marche countryside to the blue Adriatic Sea. Positioned in the foothills of the Sibillini National Park, the property is not far from the coast and the bustling seaside resort of San Benedetto del Tronto. This chic boutique hotel has been completely renovated whilst keeping as many of the original features as possible. A charming mix of contemporary and antique furnishings fill the hotel with character and ambience. The accommodation is spread over 3 floors and consists of 8 en suite guest rooms and suites. The common areas are stylish and plentiful with a large drawing room, an Art Deco Bar, a reading area and a dining room with vaulted ceiling. Deep underground there is a cool cellar waiting for you to sample some of the delicious wine stored there. Outside the panorama stretches from the Adriatic Sea to the Sibillini mountains, and the terrace and infinity pool are set amidst scented flowering borders – perfect for relaxing. A shaded lounge terrace furnished with comfy chairs and hammocks completes the picture of a little slice of paradise. A family suite sleeping four costs £250 per night on a bed and breakfast basis all year round. For more information, please visit www. essentialitaly.co.uk.

Contrary to popular belief, it is possible to have a fun, snowy family winter holiday, even if you don’t ski, and you don’t even have to head to the busy and expensive Alps to find it.The Pyrenees mountains are one of Europe’s most underrated winter holiday destinations. The mountain chain forms the border between France and Spain and with numerous peaks over 3000m, the area is not to be sniffed at. The Adventure Creators are based in the Bagneres-de-Luchon area of the central French Pyrenees, a mere one hour drive from Lourdes airport and one and a half hours down the autoroute from the main airport hub of Toulouse. They specialise in year round, tailor made, family multi-activity holidays, offering a wide variety of winter activities for the outdoors loving family.Their flexible activity points system allows you to mix and match activities that include riding with huskies, igloo building, snowshoeing and snake sledging. Older children can get their thrill from the exciting sport of airboarding on which they’ll fling themselves down a dedicated slope on a kevlar-coated inflatable cushion. Children of all ages may also enjoy an unforgettable tandem paragliding experience with a spectacularly beautiful take off from one of the local ski resorts. Of course, it is also possible to add both piste and cross country skiing into the mix for those families for whom a winter holiday is not a winter holiday without at least some skiing. As well as putting together your very own tailor made activity itinerary,The Adventure Creators also offer you a choice of accommodation.Whether your preference is for a self-catering apartment in town, an independent self-catering property, charming Bed and Breakfast or a small hotel, they have options to suit all budgets. Nestled in the side of a grassy knoll in a Suffolk woodland, Pod Hollow brings the magic of Tolkien’s Middle-earth to life. From the moment excited visitors step through Pod Hollow’s perfectly round wooden door, it will feel as though they are stepping into a Hobbit’s storybook. The self-catering home sleeps 4 (+1) and is perfect for mid-week and weekend holidays all year round. Pod Hollow was constructed for numerous reasons. It was created to offer something very special to enhance the existing Glamping experience West Stow Pods already offers.Although the Pods are very successful (they were named as one of The Guardian’s 10 Best Glamping Sites in the UK in 2016) the company wanted something a little different. With the Anglo-Saxon Village a stone’s throw away and its connection with Tolkien, a Halfling-style construction seemed like the obvious thing to supplement both sites, with only the King’s Forest separating them. Inside Pod Hollow’s subterranean chambers, guests will find two double bedrooms, a sitting room, a fully fitted kitchen/diner and a shower room. On cold winter evenings, cosy up in front of the feature fireplace, the perfect backdrop for recounting tales of dragons and lost treasure. Like hairy-footed Halfling friends,West Stow Pods know how important comfort is, especially being so close to nature. If the weather is fine, get out and about and explore experiences within easy reach of Pod Hollow. Continue the Middle-earth adventure at West Stow Anglo-SaxonVillage, or for great outdoor experiences, head to High Lodge for cycling and walking trails as well as tree-top adventures at Go Ape.Alternatively, simply relax by taking a stroll around the enchanting gardens at Fullers Mill or explore the historic town of Bury St Edmunds with its stunning cathedral, Abbey Gardens, shops and cafés. For more information about West Stow Pods, please visit www.weststowpods. co.uk. Don’t miss the online 360 degree tour available on the website.
