Discover your Local Birds
Exciting new nature book, A World of Birds takes readers on a flying visit round the world, scouring the seven continents for the biggest, brightest and best birds on the planet. Urban Jungle creator and Brighton based illustrator Vicky Woodgate perfectly captures the brilliance of the bird world with each chapter taking you to a new continent and introducing birds from hummingbirds to hawks, and parrots to penguins. With a vintage travelogue feel, vibrant artwork and bite-sized facts and annotations, the book will appeal to wildlife lovers of all ages, big and small. A World of Birds is published on 22 March, RRP £14.99. Author and illustrator Vicky Woodgate believes now is a great time to learn more about the birds around us, she wants everyone to get out and get looking for birds locally. She told us, “Brighton wouldn’t be Brighton without mentioning the cheeky gulls that frequent the beach fronts, bold noisy herring gulls and lovely black-headed gulls are just some of the species you can spot.”
Royal Victoria Place Largest Teddy Royal Victoria Place Shopping Centre in Tunbridge Wells teamed with up local children’s charity ellenor for Christmas to raise money for children and young people with life-threatening illnesses. Tunbridge Wells Biggest Teddy Bear, aptly named ‘Teddy Selfie’ took up residence inside West Kent’s biggest shopping centre between 19 November and 5 January, with shoppers and their families posting images of themselves taken with the 3.5m high teddy using the hashtag #RVPTeddySelfie and donating money to the charity. Plus the five best selfies won a £50 RVP Gift Card. Katie Gardner, ellenor fundraiser, told Primary Times, “We’ve been overwhelmed by the support people have shown us through the #RVPTeddySelfie campaign. If people would like to support our work to provide specialist hospice care to terminally ill children, they can visit www.ellenor.org.” Royal Victoria Place’s Teddy Selfie campaign raised nearly £3,000 for ellenor funding vital hospice home care to babies, children and young adults, aged 0-18 years across the Kent region. ellenor is the only charity in Kent that provides hospice care for people of all ages – babies, children and adults - and their families. As a pioneer in the field of hospice at home care, ellenor enables children in Kent to receive the very best care and support they need at home, so they can stay with their loved ones. Specialist care such as chemotherapy and respite provided in the sanctuary of the family home enables families to focus on building precious memories in the limited time they have together.
Journey Around the World in Sound You don’t need to travel far to see some impressive winged wildlife. Even bird feeders in the heart of the city are regularly frequented by blue tits, robins, blackbirds, goldfinches and wood pigeons eager for a good feed. You might even catch a magnificent sparrow hawk on the hunt for prey and watch the smaller birds scatter away. A walk on the seafront offers up close encounters of plenty of seaside wildlife – just watch out for the seagulls eyeing up your fish and chips. The amazing starling murmurations are well worth a watch in the winter months before sunset above what’s left of the West Pier and numerous birds also flock over The Palace Pier. A perfect Easter day out, the South Downs is a haven for wildlife and birds, watch out for plenty of common species as well as some rarer spots including barn owls, buzzards and even kestrels. So as the weather (hopefully) gets warmer this Easter, get out and about with your family to learn more about the feathered friends in your local area. Picture credits RSPB/C Gomersall 4

Chris Watson’s No Man’s Land celebrates the sounds, rhythms and music of the world’s seas and oceans. Taking place at Attenborough Centre for the Creative Arts and suitable for all ages, the sound piece created by Watson (David Attenborough’s sound recordist), takes the listener from the edge of Brighton beach and out around the world, in a journey for the ears and the imagination.
The listener will experience the 40-minute-long piece in the comfort of ACCA’s auditorium but will travel via sound on a trackless voyage around the planet. Weddell seals singing under Antarctic sea ice, the snap of a coral reef in the South China Sea, the haunting songs of Humpback whales in the Caribbean and the hunting pods of Orca in the North Atlantic can all be heard in the piece, before the listener is swept back onto the pebbles by the remains of Brighton’s West Pier. No Man’s Land is a unique spatialized audio journey into the deep ocean and the most ‘sound rich’ environments on the planet. The installation is at the Attenborough Centre from Tuesday 27 March until Friday 13 April. For details of show times and to book, call the Box Office on 01273 678 822 or go online to www. attenboroughcentre.com.

Take a ‘Kid for a Quid’ on the Bus
Bus operator Stagecoach has announced it will expand its popular ‘kid for a quid’ offer which allows children to travel for just £1 when accompanied by an adult ticket or pass holder. The £1 add-on ticket will now be available to use with any adult single or return ticket, or concessionary bus pass. The bargain priced £1 ticket was introduced last summer, allowing kids unlimited travel for one day when accompanied by an adult day or weekly ticket holder. Stagecoach says the ‘kid for a quid’ offer was immediately popular with over 6,000 add-on tickets sold in the first week. Now customers with an adult single, return or a concession pass will be able to benefit too. Stagecoach understands how difficult it can be to keep your kids entertained during the school holidays. They want to make your family adventures even easier by easing the burden of your travel costs. Travel with one child, for one day, for £1. Don’t forget kids under 5 travel free. If you're travelling with more than one child you can buy up to a maximum of four 'kid for a quid' tickets. That's just £4 for four kids. Children must be accompanied by the adult ticket holder at all times when travelling. The £1 add-on tickets are available to buy on board the bus with cash or contactless. More information is available on the Stagecoach website at www.stagecoachbus.com/kidforaquid.

Out of School Activities
Out of School Activities Can I Teach My Own Child to Swim? Parents often ask how they can teach their child to swim, even if they are not good or confident swimmers themselves. Some parents question whether an external teacher or classes are really necessary. Parents teach their children many things every day and you may wonder why swimming should be any different. But teaching swimming can be more complex than most people think. Knowing how to keep the process of learning to swim progressive and efficient requires a mixture of science and creativity.
For example a water confident parent might think forcing their child’s face in the water is a good tactic to teach water-confidence but it rarely is and often results in children refusing to allow water near their faces in future. Experienced swim teachers know how difficult it is to build trust with a child in the water and this process cannot be rushed. If a parent knows how to swim but doesn’t have any experience teaching it, the risk of pushing a child too fast at the beginning is very high. An out-of-pace start could make children feel unhappy and unsure about being in water and swimming in general. That’s why most people enroll their kids in swimming lessons because professional swim instructors have the right experience and training to know what to do and when to do different activities.
If you know the science of swimming, the principles of teaching and have a good grasp of child psychology, plus, if you think your child will follow your instructions repeatedly without you or your child running out of patience, you may both find the learn to swim experience rewarding and successful. But it’s worth bearing in mind that there is a risk of getting it wrong and putting your child off swimming for a very long time or for a life time. Even with the best of intentions, parents may sometimes get things wrong.

Fit to Dance
Disney On Ice have launched the ‘Fit To Dance’ family programme, which aims to inspire families to have fun and be active through storytelling and dance. Inspired by the wide range of Disney On Ice shows and featuring characters from much loved films such as Frozen, The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Tangled, Cars and Toy Story – among others, ‘Fit to Dance’ encourages children to create their own dance sequences based on the on-ice choreography, with a little help from family members, school groups, or friends. The programme reflects the creative process used in Disney On Ice shows where stories are developed by a writing team and then choreographed into spectacular dance routines. Children are encouraged to develop their own unique stories, choosing characters, settings and obstacles and then create a dance to tell their stories – just like the show team on Disney on Ice. Parents and schools can download the cross-curricular resources online and use them to support English and Physical Education lessons for children aged four to eight years. Run and distributed through schools with iChild, ‘Fit to Dance’ feeds children’s imagination and encourages imaginative storytelling. Find out more at www.disney.co.uk/disney-on-ice/fittodance.

Claremont School’s impressive cohort of Year 6 students recently took part in The Year of the Dog Creative Competition for Schools. The nationwide project to create a lantern was set and funded by IOE Confucius Institute for Schools at the University College London, in collaboration with the Chinese Embassy. These organisations support the teaching and learning of Mandarin Chinese and the study of China across all areas of the curriculum. This is becoming a more and more vital part of a child’s education in our globalised society. Guided by Claremont’s fantastic Art and Chinese departments, the students designed and produced a huge dog shaped lantern, discovering Chinese language, culture and learning about Chinese New Year traditions in the process. After experimenting with various materials and finishes, the students decided that willow withies, tissue paper and PVA glue would create the most effective lantern. The students used the flexibility of the willow to form the 3D structure and the transparency of the tissue to allow light to pass through, creating a stunning final result. A video documenting their process is available to view on the Claremont School Facebook page. Claremont was honoured to be shortlisted as one of only ten schools in the country to be invited to submit an entry into the competition and are looking forward to hearing the result! The next Nursery, Preparatory and Senior School Open Mornings are being held on Saturday 12 May, 9.30am - 1pm. Do go along to view their outstanding provision and discover what makes Claremont Independent School such a special learning environment for your child.

Having first appeared at the Adelaide Fringe Festival in 2011, Happy Haps Productions has taken the show on tour to some of Australia’s most diverse and remote festivals. In 2018 it returned to the Adelaide Fringe and received rave reviews. Broadway Baby said, “The Very Circusy Caterpillar is a show aimed directly and oh so successfully at the little ones.” while the Adelaide Advertiser commented, ‘“I couldn’t do that” gasps one four-year-old, as his jaw drops, eyes wide. But the best trick is the flying finale, from the beautiful butterfly.’ The Very Circusy Caterpillar is sure to entertain and delight. Photo credit: Jo Duck

Collar & Cuffs
Brighton Fringe is always great for family-friendly theatre. After their terrific success last year with ‘Little Meerkat’s Big Panic’, based on the book by Jane Evans and all about handling anxiety, award-winning multi-sensory musical theatre company Collar & Cuffs are back again in 2018. This time they’re premiering two new original shows, developed at the request of audiences around the UK who enjoyed the company’s debut production and wanted more! Suitable for babies and children and fully inclusive for complex needs, choose from a seaside adventure exploring tantrums and quarrels with ‘Crabby’ or space-themed show ‘You, the Loo, and Nappy-Nappy Noos’ which is designed to support children and their families through potty training and managing toiletrelated worries. Each show includes sensory play opportunities using low cost resources that support children’s healthy brain and body development. Expect Makaton signing, fabulous live vocals and huge amounts of warmth, charm and energy. Following the Fringe, both shows are available to visit Early Years settings and schools as well as festivals, theatres, and conferences. Collar & Cuffs Co are sisters Julia and Ellie.
