Independent School for your four year old - more affordable than you think ‘We can’t possibly afford it – we’re not that sort of family.’ If only I had a pound for every time I’ve heard this! When you actually ‘do the sums’ you might be surprised to discover that a private education could be an option. At Burgess Hill Girls, our mission is to create tomorrow’s women by providing an outstanding, personalised education which inspires every girl to excel. But can you afford what we have to offer? While at first glance, the fees may look daunting, have you considered the potential savings you can make in terms of childcare, meals and after-school clubs. We have calculated that an independent education for a four-year-old starting reception can actually cost as little as £81 per week. Even better, as we offer the Government’s Free Childcare Scheme, you could be eligible for an additional £44 saving per week, resulting in a final cost of only £37 per week or £1,924 per year.

Here is a brief summary of our calculations, please see our website for a full breakdown. Extended School Day At Burgess Hill Girls your child will get up to 20 hours more education a week than they would in a state school. Time you won’t have to cover with childcare, a saving of approximately £100 a week. After-School Clubs As part of our school day and included in the fees are a wide range of after-school clubs. Two clubs a week could save £350 per year on childcare. School Meals Breakfast, lunch and tea are also all included in the fees at Burgess Hill Girls, a potential saving of £437 a year. 15 hours Early Years Entitlement On top of all this, Burgess Hill Girls extends the 15 hours weekly Early Years Free Entitlement to our Reception year. Parents can save £760 a term, until your child turns five. The maximum saving is £2,288 per year, £44 per week. So before you assume that an independent school education is beyond your reach, take a closer look. We’re more affordable than you might think! Liz Laybourn Head, Burgess Hill Girls

Swimming Safety We are so lucky to live near the sea with many different opportunities for the water to be enjoyed by all… It is of course essential for children to learn to enjoy the water safely, in a happy safe controlled fashion. According to the Royal Life-Saving Society, drowning is a leading cause of child accidental death. It’s shocking but statistics show that you are more likely to die from drowning than by being hit by a car or in a fire. It is absolutely crucial that all kids know how to swim at a young age. There is water all around us, even if it’s as small as a bathtub. Making sure that your child is comfortable in and around water is essential to their safety. Learning to swim is not only a lifesaving skill, it is also great fun, and it will enable you and your child to try a host of other water sports like diving, snorkeling, sailing and windsurfing opening up a whole new world of aquatic fun, making your Summer holidays and visits to the swimming pool and the beach a lot more fun for all! For more information on Swimming lessons with WetWetWet Swim School, please see their website www. WetWetWetSwimSchool.co.uk. WetWetWet Swim School run daily lessons during term time across Brighton and nearby areas for complete beginners to Elite Squad. They also run rookie life guards’ sessions in their Brighton pools. Fostering in Brighton & Hove

Beneath the Waves Artist, Helen Ahpornsiri, from Eastbourne, has produced a beautiful new book about the sea. Hidden beneath the waves is another world entirely. Each chapter explores a different ocean realm, brought to life with hand-pressed seaweeds and coastal plants. The rock pool is fringed with sea lettuce, blades of bead weed circle the eye of the squid, while coral weed paints the anglerfish a pale pink.Take a journey through the oceans of the world where the illustrations are created entirely from handpressed foraged coastal plants and seaweed. She skilfully transforms silky seaweeds, feathery algae and bright coastal blooms into playful penguins, scuttling crabs and schools of silvery sharks.Turn the pages to explore each corner of the oceans, from hidden rock pools to the darkest depths. Marvel as plants transform into wonderful creatures and discover the magic and beauty that lies beneath the waves. With breathtaking artwork coupled with a lyrical text written by Lily Murray, this is a book to both share and treasure for years to come. Beneath the Waves is available online and from all good book stores for £11.99. For more information about Ahpornsiri’s work, visit www.helenahpornsiri.com.

Be Not Afeard

Shakespeare for little ones? Absolutely! Brighton Fringe is always great for family-friendly theatre, and after their double sold out runs of ‘Crabby’ and ‘You, the Loo, and Nappy-Nappy Noos’ last year, award-winning multi-sensory musical theatre company Collar & Cuffs are back for their fifth anniversary, and this time they’re bringing the Bard! Suitable for babies and children, and fully inclusive for complex needs, ‘Be Not Afeard’ is a sensory telling of Shakespeare’s ‘The Tempest’. The show uses sensory experiences to explore how we can be confidently curious about our world, and better able to cope with the unexpected – imagine paint, sounds, stinky smells, and calming lullabies on a magical island full of strange and interesting characters. Performances are signed and co-designed with an early years and special needs consultant. Following the Fringe, the show is off on tour around the UK visiting several Shakespeare festivals. Schools Gear Up for the Big Pedal

This week, starting 25 March, nearly 1,400 schools are taking part in Sustrans Big Pedal 2019 – the UK’s largest cycling, walking and scooting challenge for schools. This year’s competition is backed by Angellica Bell, British television, radio presenter and cycling advocate. Organised by the walking and cycling charity Sustrans, the competition will run from Monday 25 March to Friday 5 April and will encourage young people from across the UK to travel by bike, foot or scooter for their journey to and from school. During the 10 days, participating primary and secondary schools will compete with one another to make the most journeys by bike, foot or scooter. To coincide with this year’s event, dozens of schools across the UK will, for the first time, be closing the road outside the school gates to motor vehicles. This is to limit the volume of traffic and help reduce air pollution, while creating an environment in which cycling and walking is safe, convenient and enjoyable. The theme of this year’s Big Pedal is ‘Travelling around the body’, with pupils tracking their progress on a wall chart, learning about the human body and how active travel benefits their health as they go. This year’s competition aims to build on the success of 2018 which saw over 1,300 schools register to take part with teachers, parents, siblings and pupils making more than a million journeys to school by bike or scooter. For more information about the event, please visit www.bigpedal.org.uk Photo credit: ©Sustrans/Paul Tanner

Home to over 370 children aged 9 months to 13 years, St Andrew’s Prep, Eastbourne is just a five minute walk to the sea and the foot of the South Downs. The school’s talented staff is dedicated to preparing its pupils for the fast changing, high-tech world, giving them lifelonglearning and problem-solving skills alongside leadership and teamwork opportunities and, perhaps most important of all, the tools to become good citizens. In short, St Andrew’s Prep is stimulating the imagination, creativity and inventiveness of every pupil while equipping them with the essential qualities of selfdiscipline, resilience, honesty, kindness and compassion. The school believe they need to be educating children in how to form opinions properly, substantiate ideas, self-reflect without over-analysing, listen and value other opinions, think critically and be aware of the wider community. In other words, St Andrew’s wants to expand the minds of every pupil so that they become more resilient, more compassionate and better listeners. Every child is in a sports team, not just the elite. Every child can choose to be in a drama production, everybody takes part in music and the vast majority play at least one instrument. The school is extremely successful. A surprising number of children have reached Grade 8 music over the years and St Andrew’s Prep has won many county and national titles.

DISCOVER A FRESH APPROACH

Buckswood Blow Trumpets for Concert

A number of promising musicians and performing arts students descended on The Church of Jesus Christ in St Leonards on the 19 March for the Buckswood Music Concert. The Buckswood Pipe Band opened the concert in full Scottish attire. The students have also recently taken part in the Hastings Music Festival which was a huge success. Buckswood is keen to alert the wider community to the plethora of young talent there is within the Hastings area and is proud to share their achievements. The standard of music making was very high this year. The String Quartet, ‘Strings Attached’ played Brahms’ Rhapsody no. 5 with panache, and young pianists (Grade 5 and 8 level) offered Beethoven, Bach and Ravel among other composers. Extraordinary talents like siblings Jada and Steven already play regularly at London venues and the De La Warr Theatre, Bexhill, either with the Hastings Area Youth Symphony
