Wear A Hat Day

Ski Glory for Burgess Hill Girls

Triumphant pupils from Burgess Hill Girls delivered their best-ever results at the prestigious Independent School Ski and Snowboard Championships in the French Alps, bringing home a clutch of medals from the Slalom, Giant Slalom and Team Parallel individual and team events. There were 360 competitors from all over the country at Les Deux Alpes, where the championships were held, including 150 girls aged from 9 to 18. Among the outstanding results were nine-year-old Georgina Hogbin, who won Individual Gold Medals in the under-nines category of the Slalom and Giant Slalom and was a member of the team which won team Gold in the same two events. The senior team’s bronze medal in the Slalom was also a huge achievement. This is only the school’s third year of ski racing and their success is testament to all the hard work and commitment the girls have shown throughout the year. Burgess Hill constantly strives to inspire and encourage its girls to achieve, find out more at www.burgesshillgirls.com.

When the daily routine of three friends’ lives suddenly changes, they discover - with a little fun and some mayhem - how to adapt their world so they can keep playing together.

World Book Day 2018: Save the Date The world’s biggest celebration of reading for pleasure, World Book Day, returns on Thursday 1 March. On a mission to encourage children and young people to read and love books, World Book Day will once again play host to a stellar line-up of authors, illustrators and events across the country for its 21st annual celebration. This year’s theme ‘Share a Story’ intends to mobilise the nation to ‘Take 10’ and recognise the positive impact that reading together for only 10 minutes a day can have on a child’s learning. Parents, teachers and children are encouraged to go beyond dressing up on World Book Day to reignite a love of shared reading and the sense of wellbeing that it brings. As always, there will be exciting new books from bestselling children’s authors and illustrators for children to explore, including 11 titles released for just £1. Children can purchase these using their World Book Day tokens and set off on their 2018 reading adventure. With titles suited to a range of different ages and abilities, from classics like Mr Men and Paddington Books to new releases from Clare Balding and Tom Fletcher for more advanced readers, there is something for everyone. Alongside activity on World Book Day itself, the charity will also be running a national tour of author/illustrator events around the country in ‘The Biggest Book Show on Earth’, from 26 February to 3 March, and bringing back the incredibly successful World Book Day Award (WoBoD) for the fourth time. The WoBoD competition involved over 76,000 children, their families and communities in 2017 and £25,000 of Walker books were won. World Book Day marks the world’s biggest celebration of reading, where the nation’s entire book industry comes together to work proactively to address falling literacy levels and create the readers of the future. Last year, over £650,000 was raised for charity by World Book Day and over 1.2 million £1 book tokens were redeemed, enabling 1 in 4 children (1 in 3 for those receiving free school meals) to ‘purchase’ their first ever book. Book tokens will be sent out to schools across the UK and Ireland in late February and can be used to claim a free World Book Day title in participating bookshops and supermarkets until 25 March.Visit www.worldbookday. com to see the full list of books and events.

However, Miguel’s family forbids music. When Miguel unearths a secret from his family’s past—a connection to Ernesto de la Cruz, he rushes to share the news with his family, thinking it will clear the way for him to be a musician. To his surprise, it only makes matters worse. As events unfold on Mexico’s ‘Day of the Dead’, Miguel is forced to team up with a scrappy, streetwise skeleton named Héctor and they set out to find Ernesto de la Cruz, who they believe holds the key to Miguel’s baffling and decidedly unmusical family history. Shot in Aardman’s own distinctive style, the film will take audiences on an extraordinary journey into an exciting new world unleashing an unforgettable tribe of unique and funny new characters. Seeking Young Designers

Living Streets is on the hunt for the next young budding designers to design a badge that can be used as a prize in the year-round WOW walk to school challenge which rewards pupils for walking to school once a week with collectable WOW badges. Every year over 100,000 children take part in the competition, making it one the UK’s biggest art competitions. Of the designs received, eleven are turned into the monthly badges with winners receiving prizes for themselves and their school, as well as the prestigious accolade of seeing their designs turned into more than 450,000 badges for use in over 2,000 schools across the UK during the next academic year. Our picture shows last year’s winner, Ella from Blackthorns Community Primary Academy in Haywards Heath with her design. This year’s theme is Walk the Seasons with pupils being taken on a year-round journey through autumn, winter, spring and summer - bringing to life what pupils see across the year on their journey to school. The competition closes on Friday 16 March. Entry forms can be downloaded now from the Living Streets website www. livingstreets.org.uk.

Affordable Independent Education at Burgess Hill It’s easy to think independent schools are way out of your budget without doing any research. However, many independent schools like Burgess Hill Girls are more affordable than you think. Burgess Hill Girls’ mission is to create tomorrow’s women by providing an outstanding, personalised education which inspires every girl to excel. At first glance, the fees may look daunting, but they include significant potential savings in terms of childcare, meals and after-school clubs. When you do the sums, an independent education for a four-year-old starting reception can work out to as little as £72 per week. At Burgess Hill Girls your child will get up to 20 hours more education a week than they would at a school in the maintained sector. This is time you won’t have to cover with childcare, making a saving of approximately £100 a week. As part of the school day and included in Burgess Hill fees are a wide range of after-school clubs. Two clubs a week could save £350 per year on childcare. Breakfast, lunch and tea are also all included in the fees at Burgess Hill Girls, a potential saving of £437 a year. On top of all this, Burgess Hill Girls extends the 15 hours weekly Early Years Free Entitlement to the Reception year. Parents can save over 30%, or £760 a term. In September 2018, the school will also offer the new 30 hours weekly entitlement. So before you assume that an independent school education is beyond your reach, take a closer look at www.burgesshillgirls.com. Burgess Hill Girls is more affordable than you might think.

Education News

The school believes that children need to be educated in how to form opinions properly, how to substantiate ideas, how to self-reflect without over-analysing, how to listen and value other opinions, how to think critically and how to be aware of the wider community. They expand the minds of pupils so that they become more resilient, more compassionate and better listeners. Every child is in a sports team and every child can choose to be in a drama production. Everybody takes part in music and the vast majority play at least one instrument. Explore Ancient Worlds

Ancient Worlds is an exciting new historical and archaeological resource for teachers and parents providing inspirational learning resources on curriculum-friendly aspects of the past. Handbooks are currently available on Mesolithic and Neolithic Britain with accompanying worksheets and suggested activities. Chris Butler and Annalie Seaman from the Sussex School of Archaeology came up with the idea that the world needs more user-friendly resources on prehistory, history and archaeology topics. With years of experience in archaeology and the study of all things old, they created Ancient Worlds to enable children to learn about their inherited ancestry as soon as possible. The resources will help teachers, home schoolers and parents prepare fun-packed sessions on history and prehistory for children from 4 to 18, including ideas for activities based on archaeology, experimental archaeology, art, craft, science, maths, geology and creative writing. Coming soon is an exciting range of resources for ‘A Year at Archaeology Club’, including all the preparation, suggestions and ideas you need to run an after-school archaeology club. More resources on subjects as diverse as Ancient Egypt, Romans and Bronze Age Britain are also under preparation, sign up to the mailing list to stay informed. Inspire your children to explore Ancient Worlds at www. ancientworlds.org.

When you’re organising your child’s birthday party it’s important to remember who it’s for. It’s easy to get self-conscious comparing yourself to other parents or the perfect Pinterest party, but as long as your child and their friends have fun, that’s all that matters. There are two main avenues you can go down when it comes to hosting – homemade or readymade. We asked party guru, Rachel Benson, to give us some tips. If you do decide to host your own party and go down the homemade route, don’t stress! Your child will enjoy their day if you do too – my main memory from birthday parties as a child was getting excited when writing the invitations, not how much effort my Mum put in to organising them! Alternatively you could go for the readymade approach, which make up for the expense by saving you time and washing up! There are lots of party firms that offer different experiences. These can have themes too, from sport to art to the outdoors - there are lots of options to suit every child. It’s really important to put all the details of the venue and activities on the invitation just in case one of your child’s friends isn’t able to do certain things. It’s also worth bringing nibbles/drinks so you don’t have to spend money on last minute emergency biscuits. Party bags are also a good idea and it’s worth making a few spare in case you get any unexpected additional guests. Above all, relax. The day is about your child and their friends and if something goes wrong, the chances are your child won’t notice anyway. Stay calm and let good memories be made.
