Hayley and Miriam have spent the last few weeks finding all the hundreds of listings that we have published. We’re sorry if we couldn’t publish everything we are sent but the summer magazine is our biggest of the year and with so much going on we simply run out of space. As many of you will know, we publish comprehensive Open Day tables in the September magazine in our Choosing your New School feature. These are aimed at Year 5 and Year 6 pupils but are handy for everyone to think about. Do look out for that magazine which will be published on 4 September.

Thank you for taking our magazines home, entering our competitions, sending us artwork and all the lovely comments you send us. We will miss you.

Children’s Beachfront Triathlon Combining their love of the outdoors and inspiring children to get active, Frog Bikes have joined forces with Brighton and Hove Triathlon to launch a children’s triathlon on the beachfront. Super passionate about encouraging kids to get out and enjoy the freedom of cycling, Frog have developed a range of high quality, lightweight kid’s bikes.

Macbeth Shall Be King Hereafter

So, the Brighton Fringe is over for another year. In an amazing festival with a line-up jam packed with a range of wonderful shows from discos to pirates to the circus to sing-alongs, there was something for everyone. Each year Primary Times presents the Children’s Choice award based on you, the reader’s reviews. This year it was won by the much-loved Pocket Oxford Theatre with their UK premiere of ‘Macbeth’. Embarking on a tale of ambition, blood and murder of their own, Mac and his wife build their own fast food empire. With a healthy dose of nutritional advice thrown in, who knew a story of witches, ghosts and murder could be this much fun? Congratulations to the winners but well done too to all the companies and performers who made this year’s Brighton Fringe, England’s largest arts festival, such a triumph.

As parents, you want your children to love exercise and activity. The addition of junior racing (8-17 years), run by a team of experienced organisers, to the Brighton and Hove Triathlon in September is the perfect way to give your children a go at a triathlon in a very safe environment. The open-water triathlon consists of a short sea swim, a safe closed-road cycle and ends with a run along the promenade. Get the younger siblings involved in the Scootathlon for ages 3-8, for a fun scoot, bike and run along Brighton seafront. There’s something for everyone. The triathlon takes place on 16-17 September at Hove Lawns, Brighton. For more information you can visit any of the companies’ websites at www.frogbikes.com, www. brightonandhovetriathlon.com or www.sportandfitnessshow. com.

Water-Safety Tips for Your Summer Holidays With warmer weather and school holidays on the horizon, lots of families have already started planning their summer trips. Many will be spending the summer break somewhere warm with easy access to a nice swimming pool or sandy beaches. Water is fun and most kids love to splash around and play in water. But every year many people including children put themselves at risk of drowning by ignoring the basic water safety rules. The Royal Life Saving Society says around 400 people needlessly drown in the UK every year and thousands more suffer injury, some life changing, through neardrowning experiences. Regardless of the location, the same water safety rules apply. So, here are our top five tips for keeping your family safe when you are in, on or beside water:

Always stay close to children

• Stay close to your child specially if there are no lifeguards. • Even if your child can swim in indoor swimming pools confidently, you still have to closely supervise your child in and around open water. • When you are in and around open water, there may be hidden currents which could easily pull children away from the safe areas so be vigilant.

Always swim together. Even very confident adult swimmers shouldn’t be swimming alone. Pay close attention to the signs and water safety flags Learn what to do when you see a struggling swimmer

• Although it is a natural reaction to help another person who is in danger, it is important to stay mindful about how you should be helping a distressed or tired or a weak swimmer without putting yourself at risk. • If you see someone in difficulty, tell somebody, preferably a Lifeguard if there is one nearby. • If you don’t know what to do and no help is nearby, go to the nearest telephone, dial 999 and ask for the Police at inland water sites or the Coastguard at the beach.

4

3 July - 3 September 17

The final tip is…Learn to Swim

• Ensure that you and your family can swim and are water-confident. Ability to do the basic water safety skills like swimming with your clothes on is a must-clothes influence your swimming ability a lot. • If you are able, enroll your child into swimming lessons. Scientific studies have shown participation in formal swimming lessons can reduce the risk of drowning by a whopping 88% for children. Thank you to WetWetWet Swim School who operate swimming lessons for complete beginners right through to high competitive levels throughout the week at venues across Brighton and Hove, Lewes and West Sussex. For more information, email info@ wetwetwetswimschool.co.uk or call 01273 388 247.

free and the event will be open during centre trading hours each day. DINO LIVE will provide visitors with a unique journey spanning more than 250 million years. The event consists of a series of scenes located throughout the shopping centre where the dinosaurs will be displayed in environments replicating their natural habitat. These life size animatronic beasts will captivate visitors as they watch them move, roar and even breathe! It’s as close as anyone will get to experience these prehistoric creatures without having to join Dr Who on one of his time travels. Visitors will be able to enjoy the thrill of being able to get close and personal with the famous and fearsome Tyrannosaurus Rex plus other life size dinosaurs to include the Ceratosaurus, Iguanodon and the aptly named Kentrosaurus. Children will be able to enjoy even more fun by having their photo with a baby T-Rex and each weekend throughout August the ‘Dino Draw’ workshop will allow them to get creative and learn more about their prehistoric favourites. Discover more about DINO LIVE at www.royalvictoriaplace.com or follow Royal Victoria Place on Facebook and twitter for the latest news and updates.

Do You Know Your Oak From Your Ash?

Did you know that the average living room has ten items made from trees, or that 300 insects live in just one silver birch tree? How often do you read a newspaper, sit on a sofa or write on a piece of paper? With over 70 million visits to the nations’ forests a year, a new campaign has been launched by Forestry Commission England exploring the world of trees and revealing what an incredible contribution they make to our lives. Tree Explorer helps people to identify and learn more about the different tree species, uncovering some amazing facts that most of us probably didn’t know before. Available at 21 forests across the country, the Tree Explorer Trail challenges visitors to identify trees using their leaves, bark and seeds and delves into fascinating and entertaining old tree traditions along the way. Visitors can use the new online tree identification tool to help them identify a variety of species and entertain their kids with the Tree Explorer activity pack. Children can try their hand at being a tree scientist, step into the world of a wildlife ranger or learn about the day job of our foresters. A range of self-guided walks have also been created in forest locations around the country, encouraging people to learn more about the trees on their doorstep. For more information visit www. forestry.gov.uk/treeexplorer. Photo credit: Forestry Commission England

The Essential Guide to Pond Dipping

Ponds have a huge variety of amazing little creatures just waiting to be discovered. Get your nets and magnifying glasses at the ready and go pond dipping this summer, either in your garden, at your local park or in a local Woodland Trust nature reserve. First on the essential list is getting your equipment – a net, a lightcoloured shallow tray or plastic container to inspect your findings in, plastic spoons, a magnifying glass, ID sheets and notebook to record your findings and a phone or camera. Follow this handy guide to ensure your pond dipping success. First, scoop some pond water into your container so the little creatures will be happy swimming around in it. Lie on your tummy or kneel by the side of the pond and sweep your net slowly through the water – a figure of eight shape works best. Then take your net out and carefully turn it inside out so the creatures you’ve caught drop into the container. You can then use your spoon to scoop them up and get a closer look. But don’t touch them as you might hurt them. Check out the Woodland Trust’s pond dipping guide online for pictures to help you identify your finds. Show off your findings to The Woodland Trust on social media using #NatureDetectives. And if you want more ideas like this through the post, why not become a Woodland Trust Nature Detective? Find out more at www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/naturedetectives. Photo credit: Catherine Starling

Don’t forget to look out for Snigger and Sneer the laughing hyenas and Majesty the fearsome lion as you rumble along the tracks. If you’re really lucky you might even spot a rhino lurking nearby. Sure to be a thrill for children of all ages, Go Safari is waiting to transport you to a whole new world of adventure. Experience this great new attraction alongside all the usual excitement a zoo has to offer at Drusillas Park as you come face to face with hundreds of exotic animals from monkeys and meerkats to penguins and pandas. Literacy with the Lionesses

As summer approaches, the England Women’s team look like they have a strong chance of taking home the trophy at this year’s Women’s European Championships. In celebration of this, the Literacy Trust has teamed up with the Football Association to create a toolkit for teachers based around the England Women’s team, also known as ‘the Lionesses’. The ‘Literacy with the Lionesses’ toolkit is packed with fun football-themed activities for boys and girls in Years 5 to 8, using the excitement around the Lionesses’ progress in the Women’s Euros to develop boys’ and girls’ writing and reading skills. Activities in the toolkit include ideas for assemblies, the home and for the classroom, as well as lots of information about the Championships themselves. Additional activities online include guided reading, writing activities, an odd one out quiz, a synonyms quiz, bingo, story writing and description activities. The free toolkit is designed to be used alongside a mini-story featuring the Lionesses, written by top football author Tom Palmer. The story will be released a chapter at a time during the summer term, starting from 3 July, to read aloud to a class or in an assembly. The ‘Literacy with the Lionesses’ toolkit is completely free. For more information and to download the kit, visit www. literacytrust.org.uk.

Mary’s Meals provides life-sustaining and life-changing meals to more than one million of the world’s poorest children every school day. The idea is simple; they provide a nutritious daily meal in school which attracts chronically hungry children into the classroom where they will receive an education and learn skills that can offer them a route out of poverty. Very often the children they support don’t have access to even basic things like pens and notepads to allow them to make the best of their education. You can help solve this problem by filling an old school bag or backpack with some everyday educational items. Fill your backpack full of anything you think might be useful at school – including notepads, pencils and pens, crayons or a ruler – as well as clothes, towels, flip-flops or sandals, toothpaste or tennis balls that will make a huge difference to the daily lives of these students. Please don’t be tempted to put in other treats such as toys or sweets as this can cause problems with customs during delivery. Mary’s Meals will send the filled backpacks to children who really need them, which will enable them to attend school and gain an education that can help them escape from poverty when they grow up.

Help underprivileged children in countries like Malawi and Liberia get the best out of school with the Backpack Project by Mary’s Meals. 22

Win a Captain Underpants Goody Bag!

Win a Copy of AniMalcolm by David Baddiel

Based on the worldwide sensation and bestselling book series, Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie is released into cinemas on 24 July. It boasts an A-list cast of comedy superstars headed by Kevin Hart and Ed Helms and comes from DreamWorks Animation. This raucously subversive comedy for the entire family tells the story of two overly imaginative pranksters named George and Harold who spend their days creating comic books and dreaming up pranks. One day they accidentally hypnotise their school principal into thinking he’s a ridiculously enthusiastic, incredibly dim-witted superhero named Captain Underpants whose costume consists of underwear and a cape. As if this isn’t bad enough, their newest teacher is a disgraced evil scientist bent on exacting his revenge at their school. George, Harold and Captain Underpants must band together to thwart his evil agenda. We have five great Captain Underpants Goody Bags for five lucky readers to win. For your chance to win, tell us what Captain Underpants wears. See below for details of how to enter.

AniMalcolm is a laugh-out-loud adventure for every child who ever wondered what it might be like to be a bit of an animal. Malcolm doesn’t like animals, which is a problem because his family love them. Their house is full of pets. What the house is not full of is stuff Malcolm likes, such as the laptop he wanted for his birthday. The only bright spot on the horizon is the Year 6 school trip but the catch is, it’s a trip to a farm. Over the next days, Malcolm changes. With the help of a magic goat, Malcolm is transformed into a whole series of animals. He thinks differently, speaks differently and eats differently. But will he end up the same as he was before? Sometimes the hardest thing to become is yourself. We have ten signed copies of this hilarious new book for lucky Primary Times readers to win. For your chance to be a winner, tell us what magical animal helps Malcolm transform. For entry details see below.

To enter any of the competitions send your answer along with your name, age, school, address and phone number to Primary Times, 7 Southbrook Mews, London, SE12 8LG. Don’t forget to include the name of the competition. Alternatively email your answer and details to competitions@primarytimes.biz with the competion name as the subject by Friday 11 August. If you are entering more than one competition you can put all entries in the same envelope. Follow us on Twitter - @PT_Sussex
