Wildwood Wildcats

Wildwood Trust, in collaboration with Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust and Vincent Wildlife Trust, is taking the first steps in a ground-breaking new project to establish the first wild population of the functionally extinct wildcat outside of Scotland in over 200 years. The project will be the first of its kind outside of Scotland and could herald a new dawn for this iconic British species which is on the verge of total extinction in the wild. The European wildcat is Britain’s rarest mammal and the only native cat species surviving in Britain. The wild population is thought to be less than 300 individuals, living exclusively in the remote Scottish Highlands. However that population has been declared ‘functionally extinct’ which means that there is no longer a viable population left in the wild. The species was hunted and persecuted to extinction in England and Wales a century ago, resulting in its disappearance. Loss and fragmentation of habitat and more recently interbreeding with domestic and feral cats, means it has not been able to return. Until now. Laura Gardner, Director of Conservation at Wildwood Trust told Primary Times, “Our goal is to return a viable and self-sustaining wildcat population to its former range. As a leading British wildlife conservation charity, we have developed years of experience and expertise in breeding wildcats in support of the existing Scottish conservation project. We are now excited to be utilising these skills to benefit wildcat recovery more broadly across Britain. This will be a long term commitment for Wildwood requiring increased resources and infrastructure so we are relying on the public’s support to help.” After announcing this exciting new partnership last year, Wildwood is now taking the first steps in building new wildcat breeding facilities. Each enclosure will house a breeding pair of cats, whose kittens will later be released into the wild. Wildcat mating usually takes place between January and March with litters of 1-8 kittens born between April and May. Breeding wildcats is notoriously difficult, as any noise and disturbance can adversely affect the cats. To ensure the survival and safety of the kittens, stress must be kept to a minimum. With this in mind, the new breeding enclosures will be built off-show at Wildwood Trust’s parks, helping to prepare kittens for life in the wild. The Trust needs £50,000 to complete the build and is calling on the public to get involved by donating to the project and giving wildcats a brighter future. You can visit the Wildwood Trust near Canterbury in Kent. The Trust has over 200 native animals, past and present. It is set in beautiful ancient woodland where visitors can see bears, wolves, bison, deer, owls, foxes, red squirrels, wild boar, lynx, wild horses, badgers, beavers and many more.

Wild Child: Coming Home to Nature, by Patrick Barkham

From climbing trees and making dens, to building sandcastles and ponddipping, many of the activities we associate with a happy childhood take place outdoors. And yet, the reality for many contemporary children is very different. The studies tell us that we are raising a generation who are so alienated from nature that they can’t identify the commonest birds or plants, they don’t know where their food comes from, they are shuttled between home, school and the shops and spend very little time in green spaces - let alone roaming free. In his timely and personal book, Wild Child: Coming Home to Nature, celebrated writer Patrick Barkham draws on his own experience as a parent and a forest school volunteer to explore the relationship between children and nature. Unfolding over the course of a year of snowsuits, muddy wellies and sunhats, Wild Child is both an intimate story of children finding their place in the natural world and a celebration of the delight we can all find in even modest patches of green. Wild Child: Coming Home to Nature is published by Granta Publications and is out now in paperback priced £9.99.

The Sussex branch of national food charity FareShare has begun an exciting project to trial the use of electric vehicles to redistribute surplus food to people in need. FareShare Sussex alleviates hunger and reduces food waste through the redistribution of surplus food to vulnerable people via its network of charity members. Since the pandemic, they have tripled the amount of food they normally deliver as numbers of people requiring emergency food has grown. The charity is regularly on the road collecting and delivering food that would otherwise have gone to waste by the food industry. The Electric Vehicle project, funded by the Waste Resource Action Fund (WRAP) has enabled FareShare Sussex to purchase both an electric van and electric cargo bike to support its important work ensuring no good food goes to waste. The zero emissions van enables the charity to deliver 3000 kg more food across Sussex every week. The four-wheeled refrigerated electric bike built by EAV is the first of its kind in the UK. It means the last-mile delivery and collection of surplus food in Brighton & Hove can be toxic fume-free. Already making an impression out in the streets of Brighton, the bike was finished off with a bespoke design by local illustrator Sandra Staufer. The Resource Action Fund is an £18 million fund, provided by Defra and managed by WRAP, which supports resource efficiency projects in England in the key areas of food, plastics, textiles, recycling and litter. With a growing number of charity members signing up to receive food deliveries, FareShare Sussex are calling out to local food businesses to get in touch and talk about their surplus. Please contact Lara Bloch at lara@faresharesussex.org.uk if you want to get involved.

A Cars of the Future display will also include a range of some of the latest electric and hybrid vehicles, along with advice on how to switch to alternative fuel technologies. Motoring fans can also look forward to browsing the food and drink stalls during the two-day festival. Catching up After Lockdown Primary Times explores some of the ways we can try to bridge the gap in education after lockdown. The term ‘extra-curricular’ has probably never meant more to us than it does now, after the unprecedented upheaval of standard education that we’ve experienced over the last year or so! Many parents may inevitably be searching for the means to begin the ‘catch up work’ that they feel is needed, to replace what was lost during lockdown. Back in Autumn 2020, the Department for Education estimated that students in years 3-7 were on average a month behind on reading, and three months behind in maths. These findings prompted government funding to be allocated to help schools support children and enable them to regain confidence in these areas - to the relief of many. But, with access to these schemes depending on area and eligibility, some of us who want to give our kids an extra boost will be putting our homeschooling caps back on for a little while yet, at least. Primary Times takes a look at some top ways to boost learning after lockdown, both at school and at home.

Create a Reading List

Luckily, reading is something that can easily be worked on at home. Take some time to sit down with your child and make a list of books that they would be interested in reading over a period of weeks. Remind them - you can’t judge a book by it’s cover! Try to encourage one or two choices that might be a little out of their normal comfort zone, so that they have a broad range of themes. Allocating daily time for them to read independently (every night before bed works well), or with you, will have a positive effect on their confidence, vocabulary, writing, and their world knowledge.

Summer Schools

Current government guidance states that by mid-June, schools should be informing parents whether they plan to run a summer school, and if so, how many places they intend to offer. These will be particularly beneficial to (and largely aimed at) children who are making the transition to Secondary Education. Check your child’s school website for latest news or ask their teacher for more information on availability in your local area!

Tuition

While private tuition may be an option that could certainly give your child an extra legup on the curriculum, eligible families can also take advantage of the National Tutoring Programme. It’s a scheme in which schools are offered access to subsidised tuition for children who require extra support following the effects of Covid-19. The government provided £350M to fund this scheme at the end of last year, and it will be in place until academic year 2021/2022.

Maths is everywhere…

Whether it’s weighing out ingredients to bake a cake, cutting up a pizza into fractions or getting them to measure the height of their brothers and sisters – maths in the home is all around you when you look for it. There are also some great, free online resources like www.mathsontoast.org. uk or www.whiterosemaths. com that are packed with at-home mathematical activities designed to flex their arithmetic muscles.

Maths in everyday life A trip to the supermarket Looking at price labels, calculating the percentage discounts of reduced items and handling money and calculating change at the checkout can all contribute to children’s mathematical learning. Cooking at home Choose a recipe that produces a smaller amount than the number of people in your family, such as four biscuits for a family of 8. Ask children to re-write the recipe by doubling or halving amounts. Crafting There is counting and pattern-forming in knitting and t he ancient Japanese art of origami is mathematical.

Education Roundup New Building... New Beginnings!

Claremont Prep School in St Leonards-on-Sea has started the Summer Term in a really positive style with the opening of a brand new building, which will be the centre of learning for all children in Early Years, Reception and Years 1 and 2. This magnificent new facility overlooks the 130 acre Prep School site, which is situated just off the A21 as you leave St Leonards. The new building has 8 new classrooms, new playground areas, spacious airy corridors and amazing learning spaces and sits adjacent to Forest School, which is set in 30 acres of school woodland. With its ‘free flow’ layout, every classroom has direct access to Claremont’s fantastic outdoor spaces which allows for learning in all areas at any given time. The flexibility of being able to move freely ‘inside and out’ means that learning can be more spontaneous than ever before with plenty of opportunities for children to ‘experience’ their learning, their way. In this environment children have the freedom to be much messier, noisier and faster, and teachers can get really creative when planning lessons. Pop up role play areas encourage ‘hands on’ learning experiences and in doing so, deepen children’s engagement and understanding of a given topic or area of class discussion. Equipment to aid the development of gross motor skills is made freely available to enable the children to work on their balance, coordination and physical strength. Reception and Pre School classrooms are based on the ground floor with Year 1 and 2 classrooms upstairs where the children have access to the outdoor areas and forest via their own bridge. The opening of this wonderful new building marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter in the Claremont story and one in which the Pre-Prep department and Nursery are working closer than ever to ensure happy and seamless transitions between year groups. Collaborative working, positive team spirit, creative energy and a wealth of knowledge about how young children learn are amassed all under one roof, with the positive effects already being felt throughout the Claremont community.

Fun Gardening Activities for Children It’s National Children’s Gardening Week from 29 May to 6 June, so it’s the perfect time to get children into gardening. Whether you have a small patio or a large lawn, gardening is a great and inexpensive way to get your little ones outside, appreciating nature and getting creative. Here are some fun ideas which we’ve put together in conjunction with Squire’s Garden Centres to get your children into gardening. Quirky Planter Creations

Turn unwanted items into perfect plant pots! You’ll be amazed at what can be recycled – old wellies, a pair of jeans, empty food tins or even plastic bottles all make fantastic planters. Then watch as your flowers bloom.

Create Crackin’ Cress Heads

Carefully remove the top of your eggs, wash the shells and dab them dry. Draw faces on your shells with felt tip pens. Dip some cotton wool in water, squeeze out the excess, and then place one cotton wool ball inside each shell. Sprinkle a few cress seeds on top. Sit your cress-filled shells in egg cups or an egg box on a sunny windowsill and watch them grow! Cress seeds are available for £1.99 at Squire’s.

Bring Bees to Your Garden

Gardens with bees mean that your flowers and fruit will be pollinated and then set seed, and most importantly produce fruit for you.To make bees welcome, why not add quiet areas in the garden for wildlife, including bees, to take over? World Bee Day is on 20 May.You could take the opportunity to make a bee hotel. Bee homes are fun to make and can be made into a pretty, as well as a useful, feature in the garden. The Wildlife Trusts have a guide about how to make one at https:// www.wildlifetrusts.org/actions/how-make-bee-hotel. If you really get

into bees in your garden, Friends of the Earth have a Bee Saver Kit which includes a spotter guide, hints about making your garden bee friendly, bee friendly seeds and more.

Grow Your Own

Try growing tomatoes, strawberries or even a pumpkin in time for Halloween! Pumpkin seeds can be sown outdoors in May and June and are £1.99 per pack at Squire’s.

Encourage Other Wildlife into Your Garden

Add flowering plants such as lavender, foxgloves or roses which provide nectar, plant a shrub or tree for shelter, create a log pile for bugs and insects, or add a pretty ladybird tower to your garden.

Sensational Sunflowers

Sunflowers are bright and cheery and very easy to grow. Sow seeds outdoors in May and the flowers will bloom from June to September. Sunflower seeds are available for £1.99 per pack at Squire’s. Squire’s also has a ‘tallest sunflower’ competition that children can enter. Simply take a photo of your child next to their tallest sunflower between 1-20 August 2021 for the chance to win £100! Find all the details at www.squiresgardencentres.co.uk

Make Your Own Miniature Terrarium

Use a clean glass or jam jar and add a layer of decorative stones and sand. Top with soil, and then add moss on top that will act as grass. Plant miniature plants or cuttings into your jar. Add a small rock, or even mini people, Lego figures, plastic dinosaurs or animals to really bring your terrarium to life!

There are 16 Squire’s Garden Centres across the South East. Shop instore or buy online for local delivery at www.squiresgardencentres. co.uk
