You Are Awesome How many times have your children complained because they are no good at sport, can’t do maths or really struggle with exams? If children believe they can’t do something, the chances are they won’t try. But what if they really could get better at anything they tried their hand at? Matthew Syed is setting out to help children excel at just about anything they put their mind to. You Are Awesome inspires and empowers young readers with a toolkit for developing a growth mindset and finding the confidence to realise their potential. The first children’s book from the Times journalist, two-time Olympian and bestselling mindset author Matthew Syed, takes the themes and principles of his award-winning adult novels and recasts them for a 9+ readership. Using real life stories (concerning the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Serena Williams and JK Rowling) Syed demonstrates that success really is earned rather than pre-ordained, and that our abilities can be transformed through practice. With a growth mindset, based on hard work and determination, practice, self-belief and resilience, there’s no reason why anyone can’t achieve (almost) anything. Practical, insightful and positive, this is the book to help children build resilience, embrace their mistakes and grow into successful, happy adults. Matthew Syed’s number one best-selling book You Are Awesome is available for £9.99 online and from all good high street retailers.
Solar Buddies
Solar Buddies is the first refillable child friendly sunscreen applicator that allows you to use a sunscreen of your choice. The applicator assists parents, teachers and school staff in applying the lotion to children in a safe and convenient way whilst having the benefit of less mess and no waste! Kelli and Laura first had their idea for the applicator whilst discussing the ‘No Touch Policies’ most schools now have in place. “So, why not do something to help?” they thought! Solar Buddies are great at giving parents peace of mind when their children are in school by knowing their child can top up their sunscreen. Solar Buddies are also a great teaching tool when explaining to your child the importance of being sunsafe. They are great for backpacks and for those fun family days out. Now that summer is on its way, water will almost certainly be on the menu for all those with children living by the Sussex Coast. Briony from WetWetWet Swim School explains some scary but real statistics from the UK. • Around 400 people drown every year and thousands more suffer because of near-drowning. • One person drowns every 20 hours in the UK and hundreds more suffer life changing injuries through near drowning. • Drowning is the third highest cause of accidental death of children. • Accidental drowning counts for 91% of deaths of autistic children under 14yrs! These statistics are scary. We need to make sure that when we are having a lovely time in or by water, we are doing so safely. Teaching water safety and awareness to all is paramount. Children must always be supervised when in or around the water and even when children can swim or are wearing flotation aids, parents and carers must still be vigilant. WetWetWet Swim School is again running its ‘National Water Safety Week’ programme to raise awareness of the importance of being safe in and around the water this summer. They will be operating a ‘Get Safe’ programme across the entire swim school. For more information about WetWetWet Swim School classes and water safety, call 01273 388 247 or visit www.wetwetwetswimschool. co.uk.

Help your child excel at anything they put their mind to! The first childrenʼs book from Times journalist and bestselling mindset author Matthew Syed will inspire and empower young readers to find the confidence to realise their potential. ʻI loved seeing my daughter race through this book and become inspired to be the best version of her that she could be and work smarter, not harder. It is for any child who might be feeling that everyone is getting places except them, and challenges the thing that holds you back (mostly your own insecurities). My daughter cannot wait to take it into school and share it with her classmatesʼ RACHEL, PARENT REVIEWER

Primary Times Talks to Johanna Konta Johanna Konta is the current British No 1 and World No 23 tennis player. She was born and brought up in Sydney, Australia but moved to Britain at the age of 14 and became a UK citizen in 2012. She won her first tournament as a 17 year-old in 2008. She shot to prominence at the Australian Open in 2016, when she became the first British player to reach a Grand Slam semi-final since Jo Durie in 1983 helping her break into the world’s top 30 for the first time. Later that year she competed in her first ever Olympics, held in Rio, where she lost in the quarter final to German Angelique Kerber, who also defeated her in Australia. Konta continued to progress and in 2017 became the first British woman to reach the Wimbledon singles semi-finals since Virginia Wade in 1978. She reached the highest world ranking (4) of her career last year despite losing on centre court at the All-England club to Venus Williams. She has played in 17 Grand Slam tournaments and has also twice reached the fourth round of the US Open. She has represented Great Britain in the Federation Cup, the premier international team tournament for women’s tennis. The 26 year-old lives in Eastbourne, just a stone’s throw from Devonshire Park where she will be back in action at this year’s Nature Valley International Eastbourne, 12 months after she reached last year’s semi-final before withdrawing due to an injury. In this year’s tournament she will be up against current World No 1 Caroline Wozniacki as both players prepare for Wimbledon. Charlie Sclater (11), a budding junior tennis player (and Primary Times reader), met Jo to ask her the all-important questions…
How did you get into tennis?
I was very active as a kid and I especially loved running. I first picked up a racket at an after-school club in Sydney where I grew up and absolutely loved it. I was 8 years old but soon realised I was quite good so started training more regularly. I trained in Barcelona for about a year and then decided to make the move to the UK and settled in Eastbourne to progress my career and I haven’t looked back.
How many hours of training do you have a week?
I train for about 25 hours a week, combining a mixture of court play and conditioning in the gym with my sport psychology sessions.
If you weren’t a tennis player, what would you be?
I’ve always loved playing on big stages in big moments so I’d like to think I’d be good doing something that involves a stage!
What’s your favourite tennis tournament? Why?
All the UK grass court tournaments are amazing for me - the home crowd is always a massive support and they make the whole experience so much fun. You can’t make me pick a favourite!
What’s your favourite thing about playing at Eastbourne International?
I moved here when I was 14 and think of it as home. So, to be able to play in a big tournament against world-class players in my hometown is very special. Devonshire Park is a fantastic venue and the whole town comes together every June when the tournament is on. Nothing compares to competing at home especially when it’s against world class players - the support you get from the crowd is just amazing.
What advice would you give young people like me wanting to become tennis players in the future? I’ve worked so hard to get where I am, so my advice would be never to give up. Being a professional tennis player requires dedication and commitment but it’s important to enjoy it. We all started playing tennis because we loved it, so it’s important to remember that. I try to keep things in perspective so stay relaxed and have fun!

An Interview with Holly Smale by Hannah Draisey I enjoyed the facts Holly Smale, writer of the popular teenage novel series Geek Girl, you was recently interviewed by young journalist Hannah Draisey about her books and her inspiration for the series. Hannah conducted the included interview by phone as part of the BBC School Report project when she in Geek was a patient attending the Evelina Children’s Hospital’s own school in Girl. What South London. Hannah has kindly let us publish her interview. interests What made you want to write Geek Girl? you in I wanted to be a writer since I was four but didn’t know what to write about. facts like I was 29 when I decided to write a story about my past. these?
Getting to Know Geek Girl
How long does it take you to write a book? Each of my books took a different amount of time to write. The first Geek Girl book took three years to write because I was working full time and writing at the weekends. The second book took a year as I didn’t have to work and had more experience. The books I write now take six to nine months each.
Where do you get your inspiration? I get inspiration from everything. I listen to conversations, I pay attention to how people walk and dress, I am incredibly nosey. I use experiences from my own life, if I overhear something funny or interesting I might include it in my books.
Which books did you enjoy reading when you were growing up? When I was very little, I read the Faraway Tree series. When I got a bit older, I read The Borrowers and Anne of Green Gables. Anne of Green Gables helped me when I was going through a difficult time.
Which books have you enjoyed reading recently? I’ve just finished reading the Game of Thrones books. It’s the first time I’ve read a fantasy novel. I’ve enjoyed the difference in genre. As a writer it’s important to read different types of books. You can sometimes get stuck reading just one genre.
Do you ever read your own books? Yes, I don’t read them for pleasure because I know them so well and I know what made me write the books. Because it’s a series, when starting to write the next book I go back and read all the books before that again. I remind myself what’s going on and the type of tempo the story is paced at.
I was a lot like Harriet (Geek Girl character) when I was younger and still am now. Facts are a different way of seeing the world and facts are Harriet’s narrative voice. It is also a way of showing Harriet’s personality and character.
Are any of the characters in Geek Girl based on real people? No character is the same as a person in real life, most of them are fictional however a couple are very similar to people I know. Harriet’s dad for example is very similar to my own dad. Harriet was very similar to me as a teenager. Some of the characters are based on a mix of different people I’ve met.
To finish, Hannah also asked Holly some questions about herself. What advice would you give your teenage self? I’d tell her to be brave. When I was younger, I blamed myself for things that happened; I’d go back and give myself a hug.
What is your favourite flavour of ice cream? What a good question. Salted caramel ice cream and Turkish delight ice cream, which is very hard to find. Basically anything, I love ice cream!
Holly Smale’s first published book, Geek Girl, won the 2014 Waterstones Children’s Book Prize and she’s gone from strength to strength ever since. There are six books in the Geek Girl series, all published in paperback by Harper Collins and are available in High Street and online bookshops. Follow us on Twitter - @PT_Sussex
