Write Me a Letter

Letter writing can help children feel happier and better express their emotions. According to recent research by the National Literacy Trust, letter writing is rising in popularity amongst children. The study shows that those who write letters in their free time are twice as likely to have a high literacy engagement than those who don’t. Children who regularly write letters also enjoy reading more and have higher levels of life satisfaction. There are a number of ways to encourage letter writing (Father Christmas, thank you letters) but few provide the interactivity and level of engagement that Londonbased startup Banjo Robinson does. Banjo Robinson is a globetrotting cat who sends real, personalised letters to 4-8 year olds from exciting destinations around the world and has received rave reviews from early customers and Mumsnet testers. You can find out more at www.banjorobinson.com

Foster in Brighton & Hove

Brighton & Hove City Council are seeking teaching professionals and parents, who can provide a safe and stable home to vulnerable children and young people. With a background in education, or experience in parenting children of your own, you will already possess many of the skills required to become a great foster carer; understanding, patience, resilience and flexibility. You will already be a good listener, able to nurture, respond and adapt to a young person’s needs. There are huge similarities between teaching and fostering, the main thing being that teachers and foster carers have both got into careers to make a difference to children’s lives. For parents, the perceived impact of fostering on birth children often prevents finding out more, as many feel they need to wait until their children are older. However, for many of the families who foster for Brighton & Hove City Council, the experience has been positive and rewarding, teaching compassion, kindness and maturity. As a teacher you may be able to offer respite care during school holidays and as a parent you may have flexibility within your own working hours to allow you to care for child who needs the support of a loving family. The Brighton & Hove team will guide you to find out what will work for you and your family, and they will provide all the support and training you need along the way. If you are interested in learning more, email the Brighton & Hove Fostering Recruitment Team (fosteringrecruitment@brighton-hove. gov.uk) or call 01273 295 444 for an informal chat. For further information about fostering please visit www. fosteringinbrightonandhove.org.uk 4

An Eco-approach to Filmmaking

New Sussex-based animation studio ‘Gigglefish’ has produced a brilliant new animation, STRIKE, which has just been released in cinemas. The film follows Mungo, a young mole who is due to start working for his father at his legendary gold mine but dreams of playing football for England in the Wild Cup. When a gold-obsessed villain known as ‘The Boss’ attempts to bully townsfolk into selling the mine, Mungo and his friends must do all they can to stop him. The film has a unique dynamic as many of the sets were made by up-cycling household items such as bin lids, lolly sticks and wire sponges. For example, the mole house (in our picture) was created using an old domed bin lid! In other scenes you’ll see wooden flooring that was created using lollipop sticks.

Pupils Stage Play at Theatre Royal Brighton On 3 April, pupils from Queen’s Park Primary School staged a school play with a difference at Theatre Royal Brighton. The children performed Emil and the Detectives by Erich Kastner, adapted for young actors by Carl Miller as part of the National Theatre’s Let’s Play programme. The Year 5 pupils were involved in every aspect of planning and creating this year’s end of term play, including set design, costumes, lighting, sound, special effects, make-up and stage management. The children also wrote invitations and designed programmes.

Monthly, nature inspired subscription boxes for 3-8 year olds, packed full of craft, gardening & cooking activities, delivered through your letterbox! www.willowandwildbox.co.uk

Prepare to be Frightened by the Malamander

Nobody visits Eerie-on-Sea in the winter. Especially not when darkness falls and the wind howls around Maw Rocks. It’s the setting for the new blockbuster children’s book for 8-12 year olds, Malamander. Now, we wouldn’t want to offend anybody, but could Eerie-on-Sea be based on Bexhill-on-Sea, the home town of the author/illustrator, Thomas Taylor? He is hardly new to magic realism books for young readers. Thomas Taylor was the illustrator of the original cover for Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. This time he’s doing words and illustrations in a wonderfully British and quirky seaside adventure story, which will be very appealing to readers along the coast. The book has attracted excellent reviews. Bestselling author of Beetle Boy, M. G. Leonard said, “I was steeped in the briny world of the Malamander from the very first page. This is fantastical storytelling at its best with a Dickensian cast and a terrifying beast from the deep.” See the competitions page for your chance to win your very own copy or if you can’t wait, just visit any good bookshop.

The school were invited by Theatre Royal Brighton to perform their Let’s Play production on the stage in front of other local schools. The pupils created a high energy adventure tale of friendship, honesty and justice with ongoing support from the National Theatre and Theatre Royal Brighton. Let’s Play is a new programme from the National Theatre that provides everything that teachers need to make an outstanding piece of theatre whilst supporting them to embed the arts and creativity into all aspects of teaching and learning. With clubs open 8am–6pm every school holiday in Brighton, Hove, Lewes, Portslade, Shoreham-by-Sea and Sompting Village, you are never far from a Class Of Their Own Holiday Club.

Barracudas

Barracudas is a leader in the field, offering an amazing experience for children in fantastic settings. With a choice of varied activities for every session including archery, fencing, arts & crafts, motor sports and dance & drama, it’s no wonder Barracudas is the UK’s first choice. Peace of mind is priceless for parents looking for school holiday fun. All Barracudas camps are Ofsted registered, with more ‘Outstanding’ ratings than any other comparable provider. Each venue is easily accessible and they offer added flexibility for busy parents with their Early and Late Clubs to ease the pressure of the commute.

As a Class Of Their Own Play Explorer, your child will experience a unique combination of freelychosen play and stimulating adult-led activities in eight Play Explorer Zones. All clubs are registered with Ofsted and inspected separately from the schools at which they are based. Currently, 70% of Class Of Their Own clubs are rated as Outstanding by Ofsted and the remaining clubs have a Good rating. Class Of Their Own was established in 2001 and is a family run business based in Hove – with one mission: to create environments where children are treated as individuals, where they want to be, where they have fun, feel safe and their needs are met. or details or to book visit www. classoftheirown.com

Malamander is ideal for readers aged 9 and over. It is available online and from all good booksellers for £7.99, and comes in paperback and as an eBook. For more information, visit https://eerie-on-sea.com. For your chance to win one of five copies, tell us who is the Lost-and-Founder at the Grand Nautilus Hotel. Mungo Morrison is a young mole who is due to begin work at his proud father’s side in their hometown’s legendary gold mine. Mungo secretly dreams of becoming a professional footballer, but desperate not to upset his father, as well as being a small mole and unable to play football in bright light, Mungo sadly resigns himself to life as a miner. When the mine is forced to shut down after a mysterious accident, an evil and gold-obsessed supervillain known only as The Boss attempts to bully the townsfolk into selling him the mine. Mungo begins an epic adventure of thrills, laughs, action and danger, as he hurtles towards the Wild Cup football finals in Russia and a final, breath taking showdown with The Boss. Strike will be shown exclusively in Vue Cinemas from 11 May.
