Half Term at the National Trust

Family Day Out at the FA Women’s Super League Brighton & Hove Albion take on Birmingham City at The People’s Pension Stadium, Crawley this month in the FA Women’s Super League. Led by former England women’s manager Hope Powell, the Seagulls are almost at the end of their first season in the top-flight, having taken on the likes of Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool. The match is being played on Wednesday 20 February and kicks off at 7.45pm. Speaking about the importance of having support from the sidelines, Powell said, “I think a message to the fans from me would be to come and support the girls. They put a lot of effort in and relish the support. It lifts everybody. They want to play and showcase themselves as much as possible, and in order to do that we’d really like people to come out and support. So if you can get there, please come along.” At each match, there are plenty of activities for all of the family to enjoy including free face painting and a photo booth. After the match, you can also stick around as the players come to the side of the pitch to pose for photographs and sign autographs. You can purchase your match tickets now from www. BrightonAndHoveAlbion.com/tickets, with adult prices at just £7 and under-10s at £3 when booked in advance. To help with travel to Crawley, Brighton & Hove Albion’s official transport provider, Seagull Travel, operate coaches free of charge to the match from various locations across Sussex. Book your place at www. seagull-travel.co.uk Albion’s final home match of the season is against Arsenal on Sunday 28 April. Keep checking www.BrightonAndHoveAlbion.com for full ticket and fixture information.

Community Football Tournament at Buckswood

During January, Buckswood School hosted several local primary schools in a football tournament organised and run by academy staff and players. Each school played five games in total and the eventual winners of the tournament after a penalty shoot-out were Sandown Primary School. The tournament was a great success and saw many young footballers showcasing their talent for all to see on the Buckswood astroturf. Families came to watch alongside open day guests. Hot dogs and refreshments were served by resident student helpers to players, guests and supporters at the end the match. Players were presented with certificates for their efforts. Sandown Primary School received winners’ medals and a trophy. Westfield Primary School, who were the runners up, also received medals. Buckswood School are looking forward to hosting more events like this at their campus. 4

There’s a guaranteed way to turn grouchy little demons into scampering red-cheeked angels. Bundle them up in wellies and waterproofs and get them outside in nature, whatever the weather. It is always worth the effort to coax them away from their screens when you see them dash down a footpath or let their imaginations run with the swish of a stick-sword. A child who has run around in the fresh air on the estate at Bateman’s, or explored the Precious Gems trail and castle ruin at Bodiam Castle is much nicer to be around. And there’s no underestimating the power of a wintery view to lift the spirits of parents too. Finish up with a hot chocolate and cookie in a cosy café afterwards and you’ve created a low-cost day to remember forever. For more information, please visit www.nationaltrust.org.uk. Happy Birthday CLAPA

This year the Cleft Lip and Palate Association (CLAPA) is celebrating its 40th Birthday, and they’d love you and your family to get involved in celebrating too! In early pregnancy, different parts of a baby’s face develop and then join together. If they don’t join properly, the baby is born with a gap or ‘cleft’. This can be in the top lip, the roof of the mouth, or both. It has no single cause, and can happen in any pregnancy. One in 700 babies is born with a cleft. That’s around 100 babies every month in the UK alone. These babies and their families can face a gruelling 20 year treatment pathway involving multiple surgeries to address the problems caused by a cleft, including speech and hearing difficulties. Sadly, stigma, prejudice and isolation are experienced by many children and young people growing up with a cleft. For 40 years, CLAPA has worked to improve the lives of children, families and adults affected by cleft lip and palate all over the UK. The charity aims to be there every step of the way with personal, local support at the moments when people need it the most. To keep doing this, CLAPA needs your help. Whether it’s holding a bake sale in your school hall or staff room in aid of CLAPA, spreading the word at work and with friends or hosting a birthday party for CLAPA and collecting donations, having fun with your fundraising this year can help ensure CLAPA is here to help the UK cleft community for many years to come. Interested in getting involved? Contact CLAPA’s friendly fundraising team at fundraising@clapa.com or call 020 7833 4883 to plan your activity. You can find out more about CLAPA’s work by visiting www.clapa.com

Fun Days Out with the Family New Archaeology Gallery in Brighton Museum A brand new Archaeology gallery has recently opened in Brighton Museum. At the heart of this brand new family-friendly gallery are seven forensically accurate 3D facial reconstructions revealing the faces of the area’s ancestors and the people who would have been present in and around Brighton and Hove from the Ice Age to the Saxon era. Using modern scientific technology, research into the lives of people buried in Brighton and Hove has discovered a wealth of mystery, drama and tragedy through stories of toothache, malnutrition, childbirth and possibly murder. Visitors will be able to see exactly what these people looked like and explore the local environment through digital reconstructions. Go and marvel at mysterious objects that were found in Brighton and Hove including the world famous Bronze Age Amber Cup and discover the story of the beautiful Woodingdean Stag.

Complete the Discovery Trail to learn fun facts about Brighton, answering questions and taking challenges along the way. Afterwards, take your booklet to West Beach Bar and Kitchen at beach level, where kids can eat free with paying adults. Re-live your experiences as you tuck into locally sourced meals topped off with a Brighton rock super sundae – perfect. British Airways i360 are running a special offer in which under16s fly on the pod for just £1 (two children per paying adult), plus they can get a meal for just £1. This offer runs alongside the West Beach Bar and Kitchen deal. Both offers run from Saturday 16 – Sunday 24 February. For more information, please visit www.BritishAirwaysi360.com.

Forest Craft: A Child’s Guide to Whittling in the Woodland

Make family days in the woodland even more memorable with outdoor whittling projects. There’s an increasing focus on how much children can gain from regular, quiet, meditative practice, and an absorbing pastime like whittling in a peaceful woodland setting offers exactly that. With an emphasis on safety and adult supervision, Forest Craft presents a range of simple and fun projects that children can make and enjoy hours of play with afterwards. Author Richard Irvine provides a thorough guide to the basic tools and equipment that are required and the techniques that will be used in the projects. Following this are 20 projects, with simple stepby-step instructions accompanied by photographs and useful tips. Dotted throughout are interesting nuggets of information about woodland folklore. There are also plenty of inspirational photographs showing how much fun it is to get out into the woodland with friends and family and share in this relaxing, rewarding pastime. Appealing to both forest school teachers and families, this is a book that can be turned to time and time again through the different seasons and over many years. The skills learnt can be treasured and passed down through generations, in timehonoured tradition. Forest Craft is available online and from good high street stores for £16.99.

Take a crisp walk in February to enjoy amazing displays of snowdrops, the tiny white harbingers of spring. These will soon be followed by bluebells as the spring season gets underway. Around 70,000 snowdrop bulbs have been planted at Hever Castle gardens in Kent over recent years including a mix of single and double snowdrops, interspersed with some unusual varieties. Hever House and Gardens re-opens after the winter break on 9 February. www. hevercastle.co.uk. Wakehurst’s displays of snowdrops form huge drifts as you walk from the Visitor Centre and around the trees near the Mansion Pond. A new Winter Garden opened last month and features drifts of snowdrops among the 35,000 plants. www.kew.org/wakehurst Hucking Estate in the Kent Downs offers a mix of ancient woodland, planted secondary woodland and open grassland together with woodland archaeology remains, wonderful walks, interesting wildlife and breathtaking views of this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. In spring carpets of bluebells, wood anemone and dog’s mercury add to the vibrancy and colour of the ancient woodland area. There are many magnificent woodlands in the South East where walkers can enjoy displays of bluebells. Abbot’s Wood, Polgate, is a good place to spot bluebells and snowdrops and entry is free (except car park charge).

RIBA Architecture Programme for Schools

The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) has launched the National Schools Programme – the UK’s first nationwide architectural learning programme for schoolchildren. The programme partners schools with expertly-trained architects (RIBA Architecture Ambassadors), who volunteer their time to deliver bespoke and creative, curriculum-linked workshops for children aged 4-18. The programme is free of charge to schools, thanks to the generosity of its supporters. The RIBA’s National Schools Programme will help thousands of children to explore and understand the built environment – its impact on people and communities, how it is shaped and developed and why good design is important. The aim of the programme is to inspire a generation and fill them with the confidence, knowledge and skills to make their voices heard. The launch of a comprehensive nationwide programme follows a successful pilot phase that engaged a diverse range of 18,000 young people, many from disadvantaged backgrounds, in over 200 schools across England. The pilot was delivered by 349 Architecture Ambassadors from 170 architecture practices. The RIBA’s National Schools Programme offers a bespoke variety of workshops, matched to the individual needs, resources and interests of the school. Projects can involve exploring the local area and understanding key issues affecting the local community. Projects in the pilot phase have also included huge large-scale models made of bamboo and proposals for creating ‘a city of the future’. For more information, please visit www.architecture.com.

Draw Me In

Towner Art Gallery’s Annual Schools Exhibition is back – this time open to all local groups of children and young people in or out of school, from 0 to 21 years old. This year, with the renewed emphasis on drawing in the art curriculum, they’re exploring different ways to understand what drawing is and what it can do. All groups that wish to take part need a resource pack which provides full submission guidelines, information about art and artists in our collection and creative tips for making work. East Sussex schools should have received these but if you want to ensure it reaches you personally, are from a school beyond the county, or are from a community group, please contact Sue Hervey, Schools Co-ordinator (sue.hervey@townereastbourne.org.uk).

There are no entry requirements beyond linking your group’s submission to selected artists and artworks in the Towner collection, and there are four age ranges for entering work: 0-4 years, 4-11 years, 12-16 years and 17-21 years. You will need to enter one artwork made collaboratively that responds to one of the three artworks suggested as your starting point. The final piece can be in any medium and Towner particularly encourage creative writing, video, design and performance as well, of course, as visual art – from photography through to sculpture – all of which can be mediums to ‘draw’ with. You will need to drop off your work between 18 and 24 March, during gallery opening hours so don’t wait too long. Draw Me In will be open at the gallery from 5 April to 2 June for everyone to enjoy.Visit www.townereastbourne.org.uk for more information.

An Affordable Independent School Made by Dyslexia “We can’t possibly afford it – we’re not that sort of family.” If only Burgess Hill Girls had a pound for every time they’ve heard this. When you do the sums you might be surprised to discover that a private education could be an option for your child.

At Burgess Hill Girls, their mission is to create tomorrow’s women by providing an outstanding, personalised education which inspires every girl to excel. But can you afford what they have to offer? While at first glance, the fees may look daunting, consider the potential savings you can make in terms of childcare, meals and after-school clubs. The school has calculated that an independent education for a four-year-old starting reception can in fact cost as little as £81 per week. Even better, as they offer the Government’s Free Childcare Scheme, you could be eligible for an additional £44 saving per week, resulting in a final cost of only £37 per week or £1,924 per year. Here is a brief summary of the calculations: Extended School Day At Burgess Hill Girls your child will get up to 20 hours more education a week than they would in a state school. Time you won’t have to cover with childcare, a saving of approximately £100 a week. After-School Clubs As part of their school day and included in the fees are a wide range of after-school clubs. Two clubs a week could save £350 per year on childcare. School Meals Breakfast, lunch and tea are also all included in the fees at Burgess Hill Girls, a potential saving of £437 a year. 15 hours Early Years Entitlement On top of all this, Burgess Hill Girls extends the 15 hours weekly Early Years Free Entitlement to their Reception year. Parents can save £760 a term, until your child turns five. The maximum saving is £2288 per year, £44 per week. So before you assume that an independent school education is beyond your reach, take a closer look - Burgess Hill Girls is more affordable than you might think. For more information and to see a full break down of the savings, please visit www. burgesshillgirls.com.

Hollywood stars Keira Knightly, OBE and Orlando Bloom are among the big names starring in a series of awareness training films designed to help teachers, educators and parents understand dyslexia and gain essential knowledge on how to recognise and support it, therefore creating a dyslexia inclusive classroom. The five short movies, produced by global charity Made By Dyslexia, focus on the different way those with dyslexia think, the issues they face in a traditional classroom environment, and how dyslexic thinking and skills help companies meet the challenges of the 21st century workplace. In the films, familiar faces such as Keira Knightly, Orlando Bloom, Chris Robshaw and Jamie Oliver talk about their experience with dyslexia throughout their lives. Meanwhile entrepreneur Sir Richard Branson and UK space scientist Maggie Aderin-Pocock explain how dyslexia affected them at school and shaped their careers. ‘Recycle with Michael’ Challenge

Sussex schools are being encouraged to ‘Recycle with Michael’, as part of an initiative by The Salvation Army Trading Company Ltd to divert thousands of tonnes of unwanted clothing and shoes away from landfill. Local schools that sign up to the scheme will be challenged to fill as many bags as possible before the end of March 2019 for the chance to be crowned Michael’s recycling champions. The winning school, calculated as the one with the highest ratio of bags to pupils, will receive a trophy, certificate and a very special visit from Michael, the scheme’s mascot. Designed especially for primary school-aged children, the programme is also an important way for schools to generate much-needed funds - a percentage of the bags’ financial value is donated back to the school to spend how they wish. The remaining funds raised will go towards supporting The Salvation Army’s important work to help vulnerable people from all walks of life in communities across the UK. The programme is supported by free downloadable school materials such as presentations, posters and lesson plans which teach environmental and charitable messages. For more information, to register and request bags, please visit www. recyclewithmichael.co.uk.

Be Part of the Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival

The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) is searching for primary schools and community groups to take part at next year’s RHS Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival (1-7 July). This year’s RHS Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival Schools’ Competition will swap scarecrows with homes for wildlife as it looks to raise awareness of the decline in the UK’s insects, birds, mammals and amphibians. The competition takes on the theme ‘It’s a Wild World’ as local schools create a home for any wildlife that may be found in their garden or nearby park. From bug hotels and bee hives, to bird boxes and hedgehog houses, entries are welcome from pre-schools and primary schools across the South East. Follow us on Twitter - @PT_Sussex

St Andrew’s Prep Eastbourne

St Andrew’s Prep Nursery is an outstanding Ofsted registered day nursery for children from 9 months to 4 years. Open 50 weeks of the year from 8am to 6pm, our Nursery offers a warm and welcoming environment. Light, airy and homely, the Nursery is friendly and secure in its own well-equipped building within the school’s spacious grounds. It aims to give children the best possible educational start by providing an environment with no division between learning and play. Being part of a larger school means that the Nursery enjoys many of the Pre-Prep and Prep facilities including a state of the art sports hall, indoor swimming pool, gym, resource centre and extensive playing fields. St Andrew’s Prep Nursery also offers specialised teaching in Dance, PE, Swimming, Tennis and Balanceability. The Nursery has its own on-site Forest School for outside learning and, as the school is located so close to the sea, the Nursery staff often take the children to the seafront to explore the beach. www.standrewsprep.co.uk
