School’s Out for Summer..... and Primary Times is going to be your best friend this school holiday! Welcome to the biggest help you are going to use this summer. There’s no need to get stressed, no need for the constant “what are we doing today”, simply keep your copy of Primary Times handy and look through our comprehensive listings to see what’s on. Primary Times has the best set of listings for primary aged children anywhere. Nobody does it better! We have worked night and day to source them and have spent hours checking, double checking and proof reading them. Having said that we do produce some of them a long time in advance so do remember to check with the venue for any updates before planning a trip. We don’t usually mention cost and full details as we just don’t have room so do check first if you need more information. As well as being loved for our listings, our competitions are pretty popular too! In this magazine look out for a chance to win an Xbox One and copy of LEGO The Incredibles game. We have a fantastic word search competition with a top prize of the Xbox One, game and goody bag plus two runners up prizes of LEGO The Incredibles goody bags. Don’t forget to enter all our other competitions too and remember to include your details if you do enter. We can’t notify you if you don’t let us know who you are.... Farewell and good luck to all our Year 6 readers off to secondary school. There isn’t a secondary school version of Primary Times but if you still want to see us take a look in your local library.

Film Preview Guide Hotel Transylvania 3: A Monster Vacation

The nation’s favourite monster family are back and this adventure promises to be bigger and better than ever. Drac and the family are taking a summer vacation from providing everyone else’s vacation at the hotel, and embark on a holiday on a luxury monster cruise ship. It’s smooth sailing for Drac’s Pack as the monsters indulge in all of the shipboard fun the cruise has to offer, from monster volleyball to exotic excursions, and catching up on their moon tans. However, the dream vacation turns into a nightmare when Mavis realises Drac has fallen for the mysterious captain of the ship, Ericka. Little do they know that his “too good to be true” love interest is actually a descendant of Abraham Van Helsing, ancient nemesis to Dracula and all other monsters, and she hides a dangerous secret that could destroy all of monsterkind. Catch the latest instalment in the Hotel Transylvania adventure from 27 July.

Incredibles 2

The Parr family are back, with their incredible story picking up where the previous film finished in 2004. Helen, aka Elastigirl, continues to fight crime using her stretching powers, whilst also leading a campaign to bring Supers back. Meanwhile, Bob navigates the dayto-day heroics of ‘normal’ life at home with Violet, Dash and baby Jack-Jack, whose superpowers are about to be discovered.Their mission is derailed, however, when a new villain emerges with a brilliant and dangerous plot that threatens everything. But the Parrs don’t shy away from a challenge, especially with Frozone by their side. They must find a way to work together again – which is easier said than done, even when they’re all Incredible. Incredibles 2 bursts into cinemas on 13 July.

Teen Titans Go! To the Movies

TheTeenTitans are back with the voice of Greg Davies inTeenTitans Go! to the Movies. It seems to theTeens that all the major superheroes are starring in their own movies - everyone but theTeenTitans, that is. Leader Robin is determined to remedy the situation and be seen as a star instead of a sidekick. With a few madcap ideas and a song in their heart, theTeenTitans head toTinselTown, determined to pull off their dream. The group is radically misdirected by a seriously Super-Villain and his maniacal plan to take over the Earth, and things really go awry. The team finds their friendship and their fighting spirit failing, putting the very fate of theTeenTitans themselves on the line.Teen Titans Go! to the Movies is a clever, tongue-in-cheek play on the superhero genre, and comes to cinemas on 3 August. 4

Charity Reveals Country’s Best Beaches

Keep Britain Tidy has announced the winners of 65 Blue Flags.Visitors to award-winning beaches can be sure of a clean, safe beach with great facilities and water quality. The news comes as research from Keep Britain Tidy reveals that over a quarter (27%) of children have never been swimming in the sea in this country. The international Blue Flag is the quality mark for beaches and mean those visiting them can be sure that they are clean, safe and meet the highest environmental standards, as well as the tough international bathing water quality standards. Alongside this, Blue Flag beaches have to run a minimum of five educational activities for the local community and visitors to make people aware of the importance of looking after the natural environment. A total of 65 beaches in England have been awarded Blue Flags in 2018. Across East Sussex, 3 beaches have won the award. They are Brighton Central, Hove Lawns and Marina St Leonards. The awards, following hot on the heels of the charity’s Great British Spring Clean and Great Plastic Pick Up campaigns, are part of Keep Britain Tidy’s commitment to support and celebrate the country’s best beaches for everyone for enjoy.

Then take your net out and carefully turn it inside out so the creatures you’ve caught drop into the container. You can then use your spoon to scoop them up and get a closer look. But don’t touch them as you might hurt them. Check out the Woodland Trust’s pond dipping guide online for pictures to help you identify your finds. Sheffield Park and Garden

This summer find out what it would have been like to be one of the Canadian soldiers based in the Sheffield Park training camp during the Second World War. Families will be able to pick up a free map and test their map-reading skills by following the co-ordinates on Operation ‘Redwood’ to find the mission checkpoints. At each location, you’ll be put through your paces with everything from code breaking and target practice to keep fit exercises. If you’ve still got energy after all that training, you can explore the re-created Nissen hut in the garden to get an idea of the living conditions of the soldiers, or make your way over to Ringwood Toll on the parkland where the newly installed assault course provides extra fun.

You can follow in the footsteps of the world’s best putters who played the World Crazy Golf Championships on this course in June. But you don’t have to be a pro! These are easy-to-play, fun courses – a traditional seaside favourite for all the family. Take advantage of the special offer running until the end of October. You can play two courses for the price of one with the Early Birdie and Evening Eagle offer. Play between 9-11am or between 7-9pm and you’ll get a second game for free! The courses are open every day from 8.30am until 10pm so go on down and get putting! For more information visit www.hastingsadventuregolf.com

Some Simple Projects to Help Bees

Make a bee hotel: With just a plastic bottle and some basic craft supplies, you’ll be able to give bees somewhere to live, sleep and eat. Read the tutorial at www.friendsoftheearth.uk/ bees Grow pollen and nectar-rich plants: Different bee species prefer different flower shapes, so aim for a range from tubular-shaped flowers to open-headed flowers. As well as flowers, try shrubs, herbs, trees, fruit and veg. Spring and autumn flowering bulbs are also great. Growing sunflowers: Encourage children to look after their own plant. The sunflowers could be planted along the edge of a playground or children could take them home to encourage bees in their own garden. No garden? Plant up a pot or window box. Try lavender, heathers, nasturtiums, sunflowers and bulbs like crocuses, as well as herbs. Children can also get involved with school garden projects, or perhaps make a bee hotel as a gift to give to friends and family. Give bees a drink in hot weather: Provide a shallow bowl of clean rainwater with a few pebbles for the bees to land on. Mary’s Meals Backpack Project

With the end of the school year fast approaching, charity Mary’s Meals are asking you to help impoverished children thrive in school by donating used backpacks to Mary’s Meals. The UK-based school-feeding charity has been transporting lorryloads of school bags to Malawi since 2005. Earlier this year, it was announced that, in total, supporters had gifted an incredible 500,000 filled school bags through The Backpack Project to children receiving life-changing school meals. The Backpack Project is particularly well supported by young people as part of school recycling projects, which encourage pupils to donate schoolbags and suitable clothing at the end of the final term each year. A backpack – filled with a selection of notepads, pens, school uniform/games kit and basic hygiene items – provides a wonderful gift to an impoverished child and encourages them to excel at school. Supporters can donate complete backpacks and/or individual items. Delighted Lagia, 13, who attends school in Malawi said, “I’m so happy because I have received a backpack. Inside, I found a dress, pens and a hardcover book. I will use the bag every day to carry pens, and books when I am coming to school.” Mary’s Meals currently provides a daily school meal to 1,257,278 children in 15 countries across Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean. Where Mary’s Meals are provided, there is a rise in rates of enrolment, attendance and academic performance. It costs just £13.90 to provide a child with Mary’s Meals for a whole school year, and, as a low-cost charity at least 93p from every £1 donated to Mary’s Meals is spent directly on its charitable work. To get involved, either as a school or as an individual, with The Backpack Project or to donate to Mary’s Meals please visit www. marysmeals.org.uk

A pilot RSPCA scheme that helps children to learn about animal welfare is now being rolled out nationally - and your school could get involved. Earlier this year, the RSPCA launched a pilot teaching resource, Compassionate Class, for schools in Manchester to encourage children to learn about animal welfare. The aim is to inspire the next generation of compassionate individuals and prevent cruelty to animals in the future. Following the huge success of the pilot project, the animal welfare charity is rolling the scheme out nationally and Key Stage 2 classes are being asked to sign up. The resources are designed to fit into the national curriculum covering the PSHE in England and PSE in Wales curriculum plus they support Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural education (SMSC) and other core subjects. The programme uses enquiry-led learning to create debate about animal welfare which is promoted by the interactive resources available for schools who sign up.

Varndean School

Varndean School is a place where people matter, where individuality is fostered and celebrated. The broad curriculum encompasses this, promoting academic rigour so that students can stand shoulder to shoulder with their peers nationally. Creativity is embedded deeply in the heart of the curriculum at Varndean, so much so that they were delighted to be shortlisted for the TES Creative School of the Year Award in June. This honour cements Varndean as one of the most creative schools in the UK and they feel hugely privileged to be recognised at a national level for their unique approach to developing world class learning. Varndean is a really happy school where student relationships, with each other and staff, are excellent. They have a well-established smaller school system each with its own identity (Angelou, Russell,Turing and Ellis), where students are known and cared for.Varndean aims to provide students with the world class opportunities and experiences needed for them to lead successful lives in the global community.World class students develop essential qualities for success, resilience and a driven work ethic, with kindness as their moral compass. The school is beautifully situated at the top of a learning campus with views across Brighton and Hove to the English Channel that inspire great thinking for a great school.Varndean is a wonderful place to learn and develop in friendly, smaller and supportive environments - they hope your child enjoys their time in community with them.
