Self Managed Learning at SML College SML College prepares young people for the tests of life, not a life of tests. They have been providing Self Managed Learning programmes for young people aged 9-17 in Sussex for 19 years. This vibrant learning community of 40 students offers a real

alternative to schooling - students develop the confidence and skills needed for their futures in a stimulating and nurturing environment. Students set their own learning goals and there are no limits to what they can study, or how they should study, and no subjects they have to learn. Whatever they want to learn, a way is found for them to do so. Students are supported by Learning Advisers who help them structure their learning and support them to achieve what they want. Students feel well prepared to take the next steps in their careers when they leave. Results for all abilities have been exceptional as demonstrated by independent research. Claremont Achieves ‘BBC Young Reporter School’ Status The Arrow is a school newspaper written by Claremont Prep School pupils. It has been printed over 2750 times, is written by a team of talented young reporters and has a dedicated following across all school year groups. The Arrow recently celebrated its 3rd birthday and as a result of 11 published issues and the vast array of interesting and hard hitting stories within its pages, Claremont has been awarded ‘BBC Young Reporter School’ status. Roving reporters now wear BBC press pass lanyards during their weekly Newspaper Club sessions and when they are out on the interview trail, they write with BBC pens, and are able to draw from a wealth of online resources that encourage excellence in journalism

for young people. Some of the children’s favourite front covers have included ‘Road to Victory’ which told the amazing story of Claremont’s U13 Boys’ football team and their journey to become national champions, and an exclusive interview with Senior School Headteacher Ed Dickie who gave the journalists a tour of the new Octagon Building and Dance Studio with its very springy floor! The interview was recorded and appeared on the Claremont Podcast which is another student-led initiative. A day spent with global press photographer Rich Page was also a day well spent for the Newspaper Club as the young journalists were given a fascinating insight into the makings of the perfect ‘press-ready’ image before quizzing Mr Page on his theory that every photo tells a story. ‘Hands on’ learning experiences like this enable children to spend more time learning and less time being ‘taught’, as they develop a variety of crucial ‘soft skills’ that will endure in later life. Teamwork, communication, problem solving, flexibility, adaptability, work ethic and interpersonal skills are all put to the test at The Newspaper Club, and as a result, place children exactly where they should and want to be - at the centre of their own learning.

St Andrew’s Prep - Where Character is Made Home to over 370 children aged nine months to 13 years, St Andrew’s Prep, Eastbourne, is just a five-minute walk to the sea and the foot of the South Downs. The school’s talented staff are dedicated to preparing their pupils for the fast changing, high-tech world. They give them lifelong-learning and problem-solving skills

alongside leadership and teamwork opportunities and, perhaps most important of all, the tools to become good citizens. St Andrew’s Prep is stimulating the imagination, creativity and inventiveness of every pupil while equipping them with the essential qualities of self-discipline, resilience, honesty, kindness and compassion. The school believe they need to be educating children in how to form opinions properly, how to substantiate ideas, how to self-reflect without over-analysing, how to listen and value other opinions, how to think critically and how to be aware of the wider community. They want to expand the minds of every pupil so that they become more resilient, more compassionate and better listeners. Every child is in a sports team, not just the elite. Every child can also choose to be in a drama production, everybody takes part in music and the vast majority play at least one instrument. The school is extremely successful. Over the last three years, the school’s Year 8 pupils have won over 90 scholarships to their senior schools. A surprising number of children have reached grade 8 music and St Andrew’s Prep has won many national and county sporting titles. They would be delighted to welcome you to their forthcoming open mornings on Friday 24 and Saturday 25 April.
