Congratulations to Ebenezer Wilson from St Matthew Academy who won our 2019 Christmas Card competition. The card goes to all our schools and our fantastic advertisers so we will be very busy over the next few weeks sending out over 2,500 cards. The card is a charity card and the charity we’ve been supporting this year is CLAPA The Cleft Lip and Palate Association. We’ve enjoyed being able to work with them this year and we are delighted to keep them as our Charity of the Year for 2020 too! At this time of year we need to thank some lovely people for all their help this year. Firstly we owe a very big thank you to all our advertisers who have supported us over the last year and enabled us to deliver the magazine free to 363,810 families seven times a year. That’s a lot of support we need and we have some fantastic advertisers so do please support them too. We also want to give a really big thank you to all the amazing school staff who help distribute Primary Times. We couldn’t do it without you and are very appreciative. Finally a big thank you also to all our readers who enter our competitions, support the magazines and say such lovely things about us.

It’s Game On for Sport Relief On your marks, get set… Sport Relief 2020 is on its way! Sport Relief – which will take place from 9–13 March – is a firm fundraising favourite with children across the UK. There’s no better reason to bring together children, staff, families and the local community for a memorable, fun-filled, life-changing day. Money raised by Sport Relief helps to fund amazing organisations across the UK and around the world that are tackling some of the key issues of our time, including homelessness, mental health stigma and domestic abuse. Taking part in fundraising activities makes a fantastic contribution to children’s personal development, enhancing their empathy and understanding of others’ lives, as well as giving them experience of advocacy and active citizenship. There are lots of quick and easy ways to have fun and raise money. You and the children could: • Wear sports kit for the day in return for a small fee. • Sell Sport Relief wristbands in school. • Organise a Sport Relief Mile and join thousands across the UK as they get sponsored to walk, run, hop, scoot or swim. Or why not think big for Sport Relief 2020? Here’s how Valence School in Westerham, Kent, raised the amazing total of over £3,500 last Sport Relief! Fundraising Superheroes Valence School caters for students aged 4 to 19 who have physical disabilities and complex medical needs. Long-time supporters of Sport Relief, back in 2018 the primary school was transformed into a world of superheroes and imaginary vehicles for a sponsored Mile with a difference. Children and staff arrived for the day dressed up as their favourite superheroes and were divided into houses for a creative challenge. Armed with cardboard, sticky tape, glue and a wheelchair, older and younger children worked together with imagination and ingenuity to create everything from a yellow transformer to a red plane. Excitement mounted as the vehicles approached the start line for the Sport Relief Valence Mile. With Captain America running alongside Batman and Wonder Woman pushing Spiderman, the Mile wasn’t as easy as expected. But with some brave work by the superheroes, all teams made it to the finish. As always, Sport Relief proved a fantastic experience for all involved, bringing the school community together to share in fun, worthwhile activity.

Children aged 5 to 13 years are invited to take part in the Leeds Castle BIG Story Writing Challenge by writing an original, fictional story of no more than 900 words. There are two age groups, 5-9 and 10-13. The closing date for entries is 6 March. This year’s theme is ‘One Golden Day’. It’s inspired by an event that took place 500 years ago in 1520 when Henry VIII stayed at Leeds Castle with 5,000 of his courtiers. He was on his way to meet the King of France for a massive jamboree that has since become known as ‘The Field of Cloth of Gold’. Leeds Castle was a royal palace at the time and it was in a key position between London and Dover. Just think what your mum or dad’s reaction might be if you invited a couple of friends for tea and the fridge was empty. Think what it must have been like for the stewards of the castle with 5000 coming to stay and one of them was the King who was known to get pretty grumpy if things weren’t just right. We haven’t even mentioned all the horses and dogs or the luggage – no Easyjet luggage allowance for Henry VIII. Oh and fridges hadn’t been invented yet! Let your imagination go wild on a theme of ‘One Golden Day’.Your story can be set in the past, present or future it’s up to you! You’ll have the chance to win some great prizes! The 20 talented finalists will be invited to the Grand Awards Ceremony on 29 May 2020. Join Clare Balding, one of the judges, in the Castle for this very special day when the two overall winners will be announced. The winning story from each category will win: • A stay at Knight’s Glamping • Tickets to the Fireworks Spectacular 2020 • A hamper of fun prizes • The full collection of Clare Balding’s children’s books • Publication of the top stories on ‘Fonetti’ – the world’s first listening book shop.
To submit your story visit www.leeds-castle.com/storywriting Primary Times are media partners of Leeds Castle for the competition. So, go ahead and good luck! 4

Congratulations to Ebenezer Wilson, from St Matthew Academy, who won the competition to design this year’s Primary Times Christmas card with his fabulous picture of a snowman. We’re really looking forward to sending out all those cards with Ebenezer’s lovely artwork. Advertorial Is your child anxious about moving to secondary school?
This transition affects all children in all primary schools but still we are not fully prepared to offer enough support, guidance or necessary tools to help them move safely, smoothly and confidently. Unfortunately, by the time your child has moved, it is often too late because the anxiety has already taken its toll.

Well Done Ebenezer
Remarkable Me have tried and tested their service for over 5 years in primary schools and have been able to ‘fine tune’ the perfect 7week, after school programme that offers the right amount of support, guidance and wellbeing education to children before they move to secondary school. Children are then in a stronger position to make healthier decisions about friendship groups, are more resilient when exposed to new and challenging situations and their general mental and emotional wellbeing is much stronger. Symptoms of stress and anxiety can cause long term cognitive damage to a child’s brain which is not yet fully developed. Remarkable Me is on a mission to get their programme into all primary schools in the country by 2023 and give these young lives a fighting chance to succeed. For more information about getting the Remarkable Me programme in your school & being ‘A Mentally Healthy School’ or becoming a Remarkable Me Facilitator and making a real difference to children’s lives visit www.remarkableme.uk, wellbeing experts since 2007.

Peter Pan Junior at the Izzard Theatre
Bexhill College Performing Arts students are proud to present Peter Pan Junior. There’ll be magic at Bateman’s, the beautiful family home and garden of Rudyard Kipling, author of the Jungle Book, this festive season as they decorate the rooms in rich, opulent colours inspired by Kipling’s travels and his Just So Stories. Take a closer look and perhaps you’ll spy some of the animals from those famous tales hidden among the decorations. Find out more about Kipling’s Just So Stories at a storytelling session in the old kitchen and listen to readings of the recently released Just So Stories, as retold by Elli Woollard in rhyme. Pick up a trail and head off into the gardens to seek out the hiding places of some of the Just So characters and learn more about how they got their distinguishing features. Or head out on one of three easy to follow estate walks to tread in Kipling’s footsteps. Bateman’s will remain open until 6pm during the Twilight Opening Evenings. Explore the house after dark to see the Kipling’s home completely transformed by Christmas and enjoy the atmosphere of the decorated house at twilight. Leap into a fantasy world with a new exhibition on the work of legendary illustrator, Sir Quentin Blake. Featuring illustrations from Quentin’s self-penned books and artwork from his Art in Hospitals work, the exhibition is a reminder of the power of the imagination and how joy can be found in the unlikeliest of places.
Over Christmas, the decorations at Nymans will take inspiration from ‘The Story of the Dancing Frog’ with a chorus line of froggy sculptures stepping out in the garden. From Saturday 23 November to Sunday 5 January, follow a fun and festive family trail around the garden inspired by the same story. The finest froggy dancers have come to Nymans to compete in the Big Frog Hop but they’ve lost some of their props and costumes along the way – can you help find them? Join storyteller, Jason Buck, in the Gallery for storytelling sessions on Saturday 14, 21 and 28 December at 11.30am, 12.30 and 1.30pm when he will bring tales from the wondrous world of Quentin Blake to life. This will be a unique opportunity to hear Quentin’s stories while surrounded by the original artwork. Get creative with drop-in family Christmas crafts on weekends leading up to Christmas with a series of hands-on Christmas makes. After all the festive fun, join in with school holiday boredom busters from Friday 27 December until Sunday 5 January with drop-in and pick-up family activities. Where Character is Made
Education News
Rudyard Kipling Primary School and Nursery Celebrate 60 Year Anniversary Rudyard Kipling Primary School and Nursery have celebrated a huge 60 year anniversary with help from staff, governors, former pupils, local councillors, the school dogs, a huge conga around the school grounds by all the children and, of course, a fabulous party.
The school council have put together a time capsule containing photos from the day, pictures of the school therapy dogs, Hugo and Buddy (and best friend Bailey), and drawings from each year group depicting what they think the school will be like in 60 years. They have also included pens and pencils as a number of the children predicted that in 2079 they wouldn’t be using them. This will be buried in the school grounds with strict instructions for future generations in 60 years’ time. A huge school conga took place after a celebratory assembly with three former pupils who attended the school 60 years ago. Their stories about Sergeant Major teachers, and how they cleared the grounds of spent ammunition and shells from World War Two, fascinated the children. Lots of questions were asked, especially about school dinners back in the 1950s. An amazing party was held after school, organised by the PTFA, with funds raised going directly to helping to make the school a great place for learning for future generations. If you have any questions about the school, please contact Joanne Smith, Headteacher on joannesmith@kipling.brighton-hove.sch.uk or 01273 303 328.
Home to 370+ children aged 9 months to 13 years, St Andrew’s Prep, Eastbourne, is just a five minute walk to both the sea and the foot of the South Downs. The school’s talented staff is dedicated to preparing pupils for our fast changing, high-tech world and to give them lifelonglearning and problem-solving skills alongside leadership and teamwork opportunities and, perhaps most important of all, the tools to become good citizens. In short, St Andrew’s Prep stimulates the imagination, creativity and inventiveness of every pupil while equipping them with the essential qualities of self-discipline, resilience, honesty, kindness and compassion. St Andrew’s believe that they need to be educating children in how to form opinions properly, how to substantiate ideas, how to selfreflect without over-analysing, how to listen and value other opinions, how to think critically and how to be aware of the wider community. In other words, St Andrew’s wants to expand the minds of every pupil so that they become more resilient, more compassionate and better listeners. Every child is in a sports team, not just the elite. Every child can choose to be in a drama production. Everybody takes part in music and the vast majority play at least one instrument. The school is extremely successful. Over the last three years, the school’s Year 8 pupils have won over 90 scholarships to their senior schools. A surprising number of children have also reached Grade 8 music and St Andrew’s Prep has won many national and county sporting titles. St Andrew’s would be delighted to welcome you at their forthcoming open mornings on Friday 7 and Saturday 8 February. Please contact admissions at admissions@standrewsprep.co.uk, telephone 01323 733 203 or visit www.standrewsprep.co.uk.

Innovation and Entrepreneurship at Buckswood School
At Buckswood they are preparing for life, knowing that every child is different. Their warm family atmosphere cultivates a safe, secure space for everyone to flourish, building confidence and resilience whilst discovering new strengths to give every student the tools to succeed. This year the school have introduced innovation and entrepreneurship to the junior school curriculum (11 to 14 years). For two hours each week students work together in the innovation centre to develop creative ideas to solve real life issues. This might be the development of a new mobile phone app, ideas to reduce waste in school or the home, or looking at ways to make the school’s surroundings more energy efficient. The possibilities are only limited by one’s imagination. Buckswood believe that as technology and life continue to develop apace, it is important that students are equipped with the skills to thrive in an ever-changing environment.
