Adjusting to the New Normal

w

Pack your Bags, We’re Headed for Wilderville It’s hard to believe it’s been more than a year and a half since the first lockdown restrictions were announced and life as we knew it ground to a halt. Primary Times spoke to Wendy Robinson, Service Head at Childline. She gave us some tips to help families adjust. Although we’re able to enjoy a few more freedoms now, the impact of Covid-19 is likely to be with us for some time to come. It will have a long-lasting impact on children and families, something that they’ve heard a lot about at Childline, which continues to be there for children. The NSPCC-run service has counselled more than 73,000 children and young people UK-wide around mental health related concerns alone since April 2020. More and more young people are talking about their struggles with mental health generally but also because of Covid-19. And now as restrictions lift, this can bring a new set of worries for children. So how can we help children regain their confidence in the world again? Start slowly Getting back into a routine with attending school and seeing friends might feel difficult but a routine of familiar things will help. Take it slowly and don’t be surprised if they are reluctant or hesitant at first, be supportive and help them ease gently back into their old routines. Try something new Whether it’s a new hobby, joining a club or going somewhere you haven’t been before, trying new experiences can help children feel better about themselves. See yourself differently If your child is having negative thoughts or thinking too much about things they’d like to change, encourage them to challenge themselves. They could try writing down one thing every day that they like. It could be their smile, kindness, sense of humour. If they’re struggling, suggest they think what someone who cares about them would say. Try a new look Doing something different with the way you look can help you go beyond your comfort zone and reclaim a sense of self. Why not help them try out a new hairstyle or choose a new outfit. Help other people There are lots of ways to help others, from volunteering to just listening to a friend. It’s a great way to help children feel better about themselves and shows they’ve got positive things to share. Talk to people Try taking a breath and talking slowly and clearly. Try asking about the other person and really listen to what they’re saying. Remind children others can’t see what they’re thinking and they might not even know that they’re nervous. Building confidence can take time, but these tips are a good place to start. More advice and support can be found at www. childline.org and children can always call and speak to a volunteer counsellor, free and in confidence by calling 0800 1111.

Join your local library for the Wild World Heroes Summer Reading Challenge and discover how you can make a difference to the environment too. From 17 July, libraries across East Sussex will be encouraging youngsters aged four to 11 of all reading abilities to read six library books during the summer holidays. Children can read whatever they like in their chosen format. Fiction, fact books, poetry, joke books, picture books, graphic novels, audio books and eBooks can all be used to complete the challenge. They’ll get a prize for each book they read, including stickers (some with smells!) and a medal and certificate if they manage to finish. They can even choose to have their certificate presented in school. For younger children there’s the Pre-School Challenge. Share six books with your little one and collect stickers for each book read – including a special medal sticker at the end. To take part in the Summer Reading Challenge, children need to have their own library card and PIN, and sign up at www. eastsussex.gov.uk/src, then visit their local East Sussex library to collect their first sign up reward. You can join the library for free online (your card will be posted to you) or in person in your local library. All East Sussex libraries are COVID-secure and have reopened with measures in place to ensure everyone’s safety.

RSPCA Young Photographer Awards It’s back! The RSPCA Young Photographer Awards is the RSPCA’s annual animal photography competition for anyone aged 18 years or younger and it’s free to enter. This year’s competition opened in May and closes on 16 August. It’s a fantastic opportunity to get creative this summer. The RSPCA want to encourage young people’s interest in animals and the natural world, as well as to develop their photography skills. No fancy equipment or specialist skills are required to take part – just a love of animals and a keen eye. There are 11 categories to choose from, including the new Schools Challenge where pupils enter individually but also represent their school. The RSPCA crown a winner in each category, an overall winner, and there’s an online public vote in March 2022 for the People’s Choice Award. There are some fantastic prizes to be won, including a UK weekend photography break (for the overall winner and a parent/guardian) with Natures Images, up to £3,000 in Amazon vouchers, certificates and trophies. Judging takes place in September, by a panel of awardwinning and professional wildlife photographers including naturalist and broadcaster, Chris Packham, who also hosts the awards ceremony in December. Check out www.rspca.org.uk/ypa for more information.

Be a Foster Carer for Brighton & Hove

The decision to become a Foster Carer can take years, and a lot of careful consideration. Foster Carers have a shared motivation and desire to make a difference but come from a diverse range of backgrounds, and often choose to begin their fostering journey at unique and differing life stages. Dave, 45, gained valuable experience through his 15-year career in education, but felt the time was right for him to help change the future of one young person at a time. “I loved my job, but I love being a Foster Carer even more. I’ve been able to use my professional experience to help guide the young people in my care.” Choosing fostering as a career provides an opportunity to work in a field where you can directly change a child’s life for the better. For many people, fostering is life-changing not just for the child in care, but for the carer, too. There are a wide range of professions, such as teaching, that provide the skillsets that can enhance your ability to foster. Prospective carers receive extensive training to ensure they have the skills and expertise to feel confident in the role. Dave says, “The training was incredibly thorough and I’ve felt supported at every step.” Becoming a Foster Carer does not have to mean giving up employment altogether. It’s true that foster carers are expected to be available to care for children, but depending on your circumstances, you can sometimes foster and continue to work flexible part-time or even full-time hours. It may just make a difference to the type of fostering that you can do. Whether you are looking to change your career or channel your professional experience into a fostering role, Brighton & Hove City Council would love to hear from you. To learn more about becoming a Foster Carer e-mail fosteringrecruitment@brighton-hove.gov.uk to arrange a call or visit www.fosteringinbrightonandhove.org.uk. The team are holding regular virtual information sessions.

‘A poor life this if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare’ - from the poem ‘Leisure’ by W.H Davies The pandemic has given Claremont School cause to reflect on their school values, and the importance of maintaining the culture of Kindness and Inclusion as the school community continues on its path back to normality. It also continues to remind everybody of the benefits being in the great outdoors can have on their wellbeing. The natural world has, and continues to play a crucial part in keeping Claremont’s children’s minds and bodies healthy. As they settle back into school life, being outdoors provides many opportunities for adventure and fun, whilst also enabling children to maintain a close connection with the wilderness. Just the smell of the woodland (phytoncides) can have a positive impact on our nervous system, mood and sleep, and experimental studies have found that such smells can lower blood pressure, heart rate and stress hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline in adults. The smell of cedar chips can even decrease blood pressure within 60 seconds! During Mental Health Awareness Week this year Claremont’s wonderful grounds and woodlands once again came into their own. Younger children discussed all the different signs of summer before creating their own amazing piece of collaborative outdoor art. They made natural paintbrushes to make some interesting visual effects before hanging their giant collages up in the woods for everyone to enjoy! Older children began their Forest School sessions practising a little mindfulness which is a brilliant technique for helping to calm young minds when they are full and racing. They listened to a very old story from China about a Cracked Pot and reflected on how nobody is perfect and that faults can also be strengths, before trying their hands at some mindful weaving to create some beautiful woven feathers. According to some cultures the finding of a feather is a sign of the presence of a guardian angel - what a lovely and comforting thought that is! Living with Mammals Survey

For the first time ever, wildlife charity the People’s Trust for Endangered Species (PTES) is running its Living with Mammals survey throughout 2021, starting this week. Due to lockdown last year, there was a giant increase in the amount of mammal sightings in people’s gardens. Do you frequently spot grey squirrels or hedgehogs in your garden? PTES is asking people to record sightings of wild mammals in their gardens this year. If you don’t have a garden, don’t worry, just choose a local park or green space that you visit regularly and record what you see there. Every sighting makes a difference. To take part, visit livingwithmammals.ptes.org, register and then record what you’ve seen on a weekly basis. Photo credit: Graham Williams, for People’s Trust for Endangered Species (PTES)

Real Steam Trains at the Bluebell Railway

Did you know that at the Bluebell Railway you can get on the footplate of real locomotives? That’s where you find the driver and fireman. In SteamWorks! you can step onto the Stepney locomotive. Stepney is a famous engine and has his own Thomas the Tank Engine book written about him. He is 146 years old! If you are a fireman on the railway, you don’t put out fires! Instead, you have to shovel coal into the firebox all day and keep the fire red hot. It’s thirsty work! The fire heats water in the locomotive’s boiler which makes steam. The driver uses the steam to turn the wheels and make the locomotive move. It’s amazing that steam, the wispy stuff that comes out of the top of a kettle, can move a locomotive which weighs as much as 100 cars! Being the fireman is a tricky job. If your fire is not hot enough, you will run out of steam – maybe halfway to the next station and the locomotive will stop. Too much steam and your locomotive will blow off! How embarrassing!

There are lots of other fun things in SteamWorks! including a moving footplate, where you get to experience what it’s like travelling with the driver and fireman, and a driving experience, where you control the train simulator of Stepney on a journey to Horsted Keynes Station. SteamWorks! is also accessible for people in wheelchairs, so they can get onto an engine too. It’s great! If you want to take a sneak peek around the engine shed and SteamWorks!, check out the virtual tour of Sheffield Park Station on the website. Go to www.bluebell-railway. com and look for virtual tours, they are on the dropdown menu under ‘About’.
