Welcome to the first magazine of the new school year. For all the families with children who are starting school for the first time we are the What’s On, Where to Go magazine that appears in book bags two weeks before any school holiday and with a Back to School issue. We’re full of listings and ideas on what to do during the school breaks, local theatre, education news, puzzle pages, competitions and much more. We’re the only magazine that is just for ages 4-11 so perfectly aimed at you with no pre-school wastage, just relevant information for primary aged families. The magazine is totally free to schools and pupils and is supported by local businesses who advertise in it. Please do try and support them. Do let them know that you read about them in Primary Times so that they can see the good job their support does. Although this term is the beginning of a whole new school life for some children, for others it’s the beginning of their final year. Look out for the ‘Choosing your New School’ feature - An invaluable source for all Year 5 and Year 6 parents and useful for all parents who want to see what is coming. Our open day tables are being prepared now which is some time before the actual days. Dates and times do change so please check with the individual schools for confirmation that nothing has changed. As usual we have lots of competitions in this issue. Please do make sure that you include your details if you enter any of them. You can’t win if we don’t know where to send the prize to.

Burgess Hill Girls Win Drone Competition
Drones designed by young scientists from Burgess Hill Girls saw off stiff competition from all over the world to be judged overall runners-up in an international competition organised by the British International Education Association and STEM Sussex, which supports and encourages young people to enjoy science, technology, engineering and maths. The challenge for students was to create an international rescue drone that could respond to a potential disaster situation of their choice. The Burgess Hill Girls winning team, led by Georgina Wrigg and Alice Gibson, aged 13, focused on the 2004 Tsunami in the Indian Ocean. Their drone used thermal, infra-red and photographic cameras to scan the affected area looking for survivors and was able to release a beacon-assisted medical kit via a parachute. The cameras could link to computers at the operating base to show live action videos of what the cameras were seeing. The beacon attached to the medical kit meant a potential casualty could send a distress call and be rescued while using the medical supplies provided in the kit. Georgina and Alice were presented with their prize, a Fii 200 drone, and a trophy – a great achievement for the school.

Last Christmas, 58 schools, nurseries, colleges and groups across Sussex and South East Hampshire took part in a Reindeer Run challenge, raising vital funds for Chestnut Tree House children’s hospice. Children across the region hopped, skipped, jumped and ran for charity, with a range of Reindeer Runs from obstacle courses and laps around the playground to themed PE lessons and park runs. Why don’t you get involved in 2018? Chestnut Tree House will provide everything you need for your Reindeer Run event, including free reindeer antlers and red noses for everyone taking part, posters, helpful hints and sponsorship forms. The money you raise will go towards helping the vital work Chestnut Tree House does. The charity currently cares for 300 children and young people with lifeshortening conditions across Brighton and Hove, East Sussex, West Sussex and South East Hampshire. It costs Chestnut Tree House over £3.9 million each year to provide all its specialist care services. The charity receives less than 7% of its care costs from central government funding. £5 pays for one minute of all Chestnut Tree House care services. £35 enables a child to experience a magical hour in their multisensory room with a specially-trained member of staff and £280 allows the charity’s Community Team to visit a child at home at the weekend or during the night, often necessary when a child is very poorly. For more information on Reindeer Runs and how to get involved, please visit www.chestnut-tree-house.org.uk.
Save Money on Bus Travel
Passengers travelling on Stagecoach buses in Kent and East Sussex can save up to 40% on their bus ticket by using the firm’s Smartphone app. The bus company is offering cheaper day, evening and week tickets in the hope it will encourage more passengers to switch to mobile ticketing which it says helps speed up the overall journey time for its customers. At busy times when people are queuing at the bus stop, it’s much quicker to hop on board with a mobile ticket to show the driver. The app offers bus users a digital solution for buying and using bus tickets alongside existing contactless and cash payments on the bus. Day and week tickets can be purchased on the app in advance of travel, which saves time when boarding the bus. No internet or data connection is required to show the ticket which can be activated at any time up to three months after purchase. Showing the ticket to the bus driver takes just a few seconds which helps keep buses running punctually at busy times. The Stagecoach Bus App is available for free on Apple and Android mobile phones and offers journey planning and live bus tracking as well as mobile tickets. Payments via the app can be made by PayPal, Apple Pay or Google Pay, or by debit or credit card.

Choosing your New School with The definitive guide to open days for that all important decision.
A Pull Out and Keep Feature
Choosing your new School
Choosing your New School Starting to look at secondary schools? We give you the lowdown on what to do. Choosing a secondary school is one of the most important decisions you are going to make because it’s likely to have a huge impact on your child’s future, way beyond the school gates. There’s some essential ‘homework’ to be done before you make that all important choice and you must make sure you know the deadlines for applying via your local authority. For some, it won’t be an issue, as catchment area rules determine your first or other choices, decided by postcode or feeder school. However, for those of you who can choose, the task can seem a daunting one. To help you through the process, follow our tips for some forward planning and get the most out of a school open day.
Make a Shortlist of Schools
Firstly, make a shortlist of the schools that your child could attend by looking at nearby local authority’s websites or visit www.education.gov.uk. Make sure you check their admission rules carefully to ensure your child is eligible for a place. You also need to be happy that your child can travel to school easily and that siblings, if relevant, could go to the same school. After that, it’s time to take a look at the facts and figures to make a comparison on paper.
Do Your Homework
It will help if you do some online research of your own. All schools have to have a website. Among other things, this has to include details of the curriculum, admission criteria, behaviour policy, special educational needs policy, disability policy, links to Ofsted reports, links to performance data, the school’s latest key stage attainment and progress measures. But the other things on the website may be at least as important. Does the school feel an exciting place to be? Yes schools can be exciting; maybe they’ve changed a bit since our time. Is there a regular newsletter and is there lots going on? Does whoever writes the website sound enthusiastic about the school? If they’re not, you may not be either.
Head to the Open Day
Once you’re satisfied with your shortlist and you’ve done your homework, it’s time to do the most important thing of all and visit the schools. Nothing beats going to see the school for yourself, so get the most out of your visit with our tips and
The grand tour
Most open days will feature a pupil-led tour. Ask lots of questions and you’ll hear all sorts of interesting things from your friendly guide that don’t feature in the prospectus. Talk to as many pupils and parents as you can manage on the tour for maximum feedback. Don’t forget to take in the atmosphere and environment of the school, to get a feel for whether your child would be happy in these surroundings. This October, Mary’s Meals is inviting you to reach out to children living in poverty by supporting the #PorridgeSmiles campaign To request your free Porridge Smiles fundraising pack, please visit www.worldporridgeday.com
The Head teacher’s talk
Don’t miss out on the Head teacher’s talk, usually given at specified times on open days/evenings. You’ll find out what priorities and emphasis the Head gives to various aspects of their school, and will be able to see if these aspirations match your family’s own. The Head should come across as genuine, inspiring and bursting with pride for both school and pupils, as well as being very clear about the school’s achievements and goals.
Expectations for behaviour
Make sure you query the levels of discipline that are imposed, such as the consequences for late/absent work, unruly behaviour and the uniform code. Feel free to raise serious disciplinary matters such as bullying and how it is handled. The responses should give you a good indication of what is tolerated at the school. 12

As you’re on the school tour, observe the children in school, as they will often be a great indicator of a school’s ethos. You’ll get to see how children treat each other and how they interact within the classroom and corridors. Are they happy? Do they seem confident and animated? Are teachers welcoming and friendly, and are you getting the feeling of a warm, open attitude? ideas.
their learning stays on track and they don’t ‘slip under the radar’ and fall behind their peers. Ask about communication systems that are in place to ensure teachers and parents can work together to be a constant support to your child.
Life outside the classroom
Essential learning doesn’t just happen in the classroom. Look out for interesting extra-curricular activity posters on the noticeboards. If your child likes sports but isn’t an ‘A’ team candidate, will they still get to participate? If there are after school clubs, check what they are and when they take place.
Peace of mind
The switch to secondary school is a big one and communication will be key. It is important to know how to contact staff if you have a problem or concern. Find out how contact details such as teacher names and emails are provided, and whether the first point of contact should be via telephone or email. It’s important to see how easy it is to contact school staff in case of an emergency. Information about good pastoral care should be plentiful as it’s an essential ingredient for a happy school life.

Remember this is about your child, not you. Try not to be influenced by your own educational experience as it may not be relevant. Find out what your child really thinks and don’t hesitate to take advice from trusted teachers who you feel know your child best – you may be surprised by what they tell you. In the end, trust your instincts, find the right environment for them to be happy, then sit back and watch them flourish.
Willingdon Community School ‘Developing Personal Excellence’ is at the heart of everything they seek to achieve at Willingdon. Their overarching goal is to ensure students leave Willingdon, not only with opportunities available to them because of their academic success, but as well-rounded individuals. The school will be responsible for helping students create their own identity and become active participants in society. The school pride themselves on the range of extra-curricular clubs and enrichment activities offered daily to students. These range from sports clubs to residential trips away for example, to Iceland and Uganda. Willingdon Community School has a very strong transition programme so the moment you decide to embark on the next stage of the journey with them, the support will start for parents and students. This will give you the chance to get to know them so the September start will not be so daunting. The school embraced their most recent Ofsted inspection where a Good judgment was sustained. The inspectors commented on the “organised, calm and positive ethos throughout the school, which is enhanced by strong relationships between staff and pupils.” Inspectors also noted that “staff have high expectations of pupils’ conduct and, as a result, pupils are well behaved, respectful and friendly to one another.” They concluded by adding “behaviour continues to be typically exemplary.” Go and see Willingdon Community School for yourself. Anything Nose in Schools Next March Red Nose Day is back for 2019, and Comic Relief is calling on all teachers to clear their school’s diary on Friday 15 March to take part in the epic fundraising extravaganza. Red Nose Day is a time in the school year that students remember for a lifetime - donning a nose, dressing up and coming up with all kinds of wacky ways to raise funds for a good cause. It isn’t just an exciting opportunity to take part in a fantastic day of fundraising. Red Nose Day also gives students a great chance to learn more about the world around them and how Comic Relief is working to support vulnerable people both at home in the UK and around the globe. To help schools get red-y for a day of fundraising and events, teachers can now pre-order a free fundraising pack tailored specifically for primary schools. The packs are bursting with ideas – fundraising guides, posters, stickers and balloons – to help ensure schools will have an unforgettable time. Comic Relief also offers school curriculum materials and videos that teachers can use to help raise awareness of the world around them and those living incredibly tough lives. To have these tips, tools and classroom ideas land in your school’s post box this January, pre-order your pack now – just head to www.rednoseday.com/primarytimes. Back to School, Bus to School The first day back at school in September can be an anxious time for children and parents, especially if your child is starting a new secondary school. One really helpful way you can help address these fears is to plan your child’s bus travel and tickets before their first day back. Buying your child’s bus ticket can be straightforward with the busID scheme for young people aged 5 to 18. You can upload e-tickets onto the card and top up online or at the One Stop Travel shop. Alternatively, your child can show their card and pay the driver directly. A free busID card entitles your child to pay half the adult fare or 50p per journey if accompanied by an adult. There are also discounts for siblings of up to £90 a year. If your child will only be using the bus occasionally, the citySAVER Multi-Trip tickets are for you. You can buy single journeys in bulk and the more you buy, the more you save. You’ll find every Brighton and Hove secondary school and the routes that serve them, along with timetables, bus stops and fares, at www.yourschooljourney.co.uk.
Bede’s Nursery Located in Eastbourne, with panoramic views of its beautiful coastline, Bede’s Nursery and Pre-Prep School is a haven of learning, creativity and opportunity. Headmaster, Giles Entwisle, told Primary Times, “We strive to provide the very best possible environment and education for children from three months through a wholly caring and supportive ethos,
where all children and families feel included, secure and valued. By celebrating and building on what children already know and do, and with our understanding of how children develop and learn, we encourage pupils to make choices and develop their individuality, a strength we are particularly proud of at Bede’s. Practical life skills are embedded in the daily routine here, as children get ready to embark on the next stage of their journey into Bede’s Prep.” Bede’s Nursery offers wrap-around care from 7.45am to 6pm, specialist tuition in subjects such as music and dance, a cookery room, free-flow classrooms and swimming lessons in an indoor-heated pool (with specialist swimming teachers from age three years). Bede’s also offers a Beach School for their Pre-Prep School pupils within walking distance, and will be opening a Forest School in September. Bede’s Nursery is open 51 weeks a year and offers Early Years funding from 3 years, including the extended 30-hour entitlement. Open Mornings will take place on Saturday 29 September and Saturday 2 March 2019. dedicated to preparing its pupils for a fast changing, high-tech world, giving them lifelong-learning and problem-solving skills alongside leadership and teamwork opportunities and, perhaps most important of all, the tools to become good citizens. In short, St Andrew’s Prep is stimulating the imagination, creativity and inventiveness of every pupil while equipping them with the essential qualities of self-discipline, resilience, honesty, kindness and compassion. St Andrew’s believe they need to be educating children on how to form opinions properly, how to substantiate ideas, how to self-reflect without over-analysing, how to listen and value other opinions, how to think critically and how to be aware of the wider community. In other words, they want to expand the minds of every pupil so that they become more resilient, more compassionate and better listeners. Every child is in a sports team, not just the elite. Every child can choose to be in a drama production, everybody takes part in music and the vast majority play at least one instrument. The school is extremely successful. A number of children have reached Grade 8 music over the years and St Andrew’s Prep has won many county and national sporting titles. You can see the school for yourselves by emailing admissions@ standrewsprep.co.uk or visiting www.standrewsprep.co.uk.

‘Failing is Good’ - Burgess Hill Girls School Failing is good - one of the powerful mantras girls should adapt to achieve their dreams. A vital part of the curriculum at Burgess Hill Girls is their speakers programme. Most recently, Olympic champion Lizzy Yarnold was the guest of honour at the Junior School sports day. Winning consecutive Olympic gold medals in 2014 and 2018, Lizzy is the most successful British Winter Olympian and the most successful Olympic Skeleton athlete of all time from any nation. She stayed for the whole day, chatting with girls, answering their questions and cheering them on. She also gave a powerful speech about the challenges she has faced in her sporting career. At age 18 she realised she wasn’t going to make it as a heptathlete and began to explore other events to succeed in her dream of becoming an Olympian. Through UK Sport’s Girls4Gold talent identification programme, she was identified as having potential in skeleton. Seven years later she was World Champion. There are three lessons children can take from Lizzy’s story. Firstly to aim high, secondly to adapt. The third lesson? In Lizzy’s own words, ‘failing is good, you don’t win much in life, so it is very important to deal with losing and to see it as a positive.’ ‘Failing is good’ fits very closely with the philosophy at Burgess Hill Girls. Their empowering community gives girls the freedom to take risks, to challenge themselves, and, most importantly, to make and learn from mistakes - a true driver in developing the necessary character and skills to succeed in the long term. You might even see a Burgess Hill Girl on the podium sometime soon. For more information, please visit www.burgesshillgirls.com.

King’s Academy Ringmer King’s Academy Ringmer are very proud of their two winning candidates for the two year Sixth Form scholarship at their sister school in Madrid. Ellie Gross and Oscar Beale were selected from an extremely tough field by the King’s Group, including Sir Roger Fry. Oscar will start in September 2018 and Ellie the following September. The academy joined the King’s Group of Academies (KGA) just over a year ago. Hailsham Community College is a busy, cheerful community with a positive atmosphere full of purpose and endeavour. Their focus is on learning - they take pride in nurturing and supporting the personal, social and academic development of each individual. They know that students learn best when they are secure and happy. The college motto, ‘be the very best you can be’, is very simple but encapsulates everything they believe in for the entire college community, students and staff alike. Their successful transition programme supports pupils throughout Year 6. Through a series of activities spread across the year children become familiar with the college environment and their teachers well before starting their first day as a Year 7 student. The college find that students begin in September fully prepared, confident and ready for the next step of their educational journey. HCC was proud to be judged as ‘Good’ by Ofsted in March 2017 with key observations being their strong sense of community, excellent relationships between staff and pupils, and how the school’s culture enables students to grow as confident, eloquent and articulate young people. Win a Signed Crystal Palace Shirt Crystal Palace made a splash in the transfer window this summer with the signing of German International Max Meyer from Bundesliga side Schalke. The exciting midfielder has been dubbed as everything from a ‘wunderkind’ to ‘the German Messi’ and is set to light up Selhurst Park this season as Palace look to build on the eleventh place finish achieved last season. Meyer made his debut at Selhurst Park when Palace hosted Champions League finalists Liverpool and will be looking forward to many more games in front of the best atmosphere in the Premier League. To celebrate the signing, Crystal Palace is giving you the chance to win a free shirt signed by the player himself. All you have to do to be in with a chance of winning is to answer the following question correctly: Which club did Meyer last play a competitive game for before joining Palace? See below for details of how to enter.
DIY Circus Lab for Kids
This year the UK is celebrating 250 years of circus, and a new circus book is out to celebrate this. DIY Circus Lab for Kids by Jackie Leigh Davis gives families everything they need to produce their own circus. Dive into the youth circus community and learn about juggling, acrobatics, manipulations, balance and clowning. The book opens with a do-it-yourself prop making class, and provides enough homemade equipment to get you started on some fun circus basics. Rising circus stars will then move on to lessons in toss juggling, flower sticks, poi, human pyramids and how to move on to even more tricks and skills. And best yet, kids will see how to combine skills into an act, and acts into a show. DIY Circus Lab for Kids also includes the Circademic Corner and safety check boxes whenever skilllearning requires adult supervision. Primary Times have five copies of DIY Circus Lab for Kids to give away to five lucky readers. For your chance to win, simply tell us how many years the circus has been in the UK. See the bottom of this page for details of how to enter.
