The Boss Baby Meet a most unusual baby. He wears a suit and speaks with the voice and wit of Alec Baldwin.‘The Boss Baby’ is a hilarious story about how a new baby’s arrival impacts a family, told from the point of view of a delightfully unreliable narrator, a wildly imaginative seven-year old named Tim.Tim is jealous of his fast-talking, briefcasecarrying baby brother. When he embarks on a mission to win back the affections of his parents, he stumbles upon a secret ploy by the CEO of Puppy Co. that threatens to destroy the balance of love in the world.Tim and his brother must come together to stop the dastardly scheme. With a sly, heart-filled message about the importance of family,The Boss Baby is an authentic and broadly appealing original comedy for all ages. DreamWorks Animation’s ‘The Boss Baby’ will be released in cinemas on 7 April.

Support Chestnut Tree House

Children’s Hospice Week (22 to 28 May 2017) is the UK’s only awareness and fundraising week for children with life-shortening conditions and their families and the palliative care services that support them. The aim of the week is to improve public understanding of what life is really like for families caring for seriously ill children. The round the clock care that children with life-shortening conditions need impacts on the entire family. Families often find it difficult to spend quality time together as it can be complicated to do even the simplest activities. It also highlights how precious family time is and how the wide range of children’s palliative care services across the UK provide vital support to thousands of families and help them treasure their time together. Children’s palliative care charities across the UK, including Chestnut Tree House, provide vital care and support, helping families be families. They receive very little central government funding - less than 7% of their annual £3.5 million care costs. They rely heavily on the support of the local community to raise the funds they need to continue providing this vital care to local children and their families. Chestnut Tree House is encouraging people to support them during Children’s Hospice Week by holding their own fundraising event and the hospice’s Fundraising Team have got lots of ideas. Why not hold a Superhero Day at your School or workplace – dress up as your favourite Superhero and organise themed events? You could put on a cake sale, coffee morning or afternoon tea or think up your own fun activity. The Fundraising Team are on hand to provide ideas, materials, advice and support. Contact them via www.chestnut-tree-house.org. uk or call the Fundraising Team on 01903 871 820.

Easter Cooking - Small Chocolate Nest Cakes Easter is the perfect time to get children involved in food preparation as many of the cakes and sweet treats are quick, easy and involve a minimal amount of ‘cooking’. Chocolate ‘Nest’ cakes come in a variety of guises, all pretty simple to make – even for younger children. The simplest ‘Nest’ cakes are rice crispy/cornflake cakes decorated with mini eggs etc. For a particularly ‘nesty’ look shredded wheat can be used. 200g Milk Chocolate Small Chocolate Nest Cakes (serves 12) 200g White Chocolate Ingredients: Plain Chocolate 200–250g Decorations (in this case, various colours of mini-eggs works best.) Shredded Wheat, crushed approx. 85g Method: Method: Buy or bake a round sponge cake. Melt the chocolate in a big bowl over boiling water. Once melted, remove the bowl from Break the milk chocolate into pieces the water and start to mix in the Shredded and melt over a bowl of boiling Wheat. Once all of the cereal has been water. coated in chocolate place the mixture evenly Place broken up Shredded Wheat in 12 paper cases. Decorate as appropriate in a bowl and mix with melted and place in the fridge for a minimum of 1 chocolate until the cereal is completely covered. Leave to one side. hour to set. Melt the white chocolate in a bowl and leave it to cool. Variations: Rice Krispies, Cornflakes, both approx. 85g (use as When the white chocolate has cooled pour it onto the centre of the much or as little as you need for all individual krispies or flakes to be sponge and smooth it over the top and sides of the cake. It does covered). Many recipes use golden syrup and butter but we’ve opted not need to be neat! to keep things simple. If you prefer a sweeter taste use melted Mars Place the milk chocolate ‘nest’ around the sides of the sponge and Bars instead of plain chocolate. The great thing about these cakes is press into place making sure it sticks! that you can experiment with different cereals and chocolate. Cover the top of the cake with mini-eggs. Large Chocolate Nest Cake. Place the cake in the fridge for at least one hour. Ingredients: If bits of the nest don’t stick, melt a little bit more chocolate, let it A round, standard size, sponge cake (classic or chocolate) cool and use that to anchor the nest. 2 large Shredded Wheat

National Mills Weekend

The National Mills Weekend is the annual festival of milling heritage and provides you with a fantastic opportunity to visit mills, many of which are not usually open to the public. This year the festival will take place on the 13 and 14 May. The theme for this year is engineers and engineering - celebrating the engineers and millwrights who built mills and their machinery. Until the advent of the steam engine, wind and watermills provided the only source of power for many different processes from making flour, paper and cloth, to hammering metal and extracting oils. You can explore mills that used to or still do produce these products, some restored to working order, some derelict and some still working commercially. The National Mills Weekend is a great opportunity to take the family on a fun day out and to learn about the heritage of these buildings. Some of the locations may also be running special activities alongside the event, so check the website to see what is happening near you. For more information, visit www.nationalmillsweekend.co.uk. Local windmills open over National Mills Weekend include Marlpits, Polegate Windmill and Milling Museum and Rottingdean. Windmills at Stone Cross, West Blatchington and Windmill Hill are open on Sunday 14 May.

Arr We There Yet?

Australian entertainment company Head First Acrobats will be returning to the Brighton Fringe this year with a rip-roaring and swashbuckling adventure in which three sailors hit the high seas in search of treasure. A scallywag pirate, a muscular sailor and a chef with a seafood allergy make for a hopeless crew as they fight for the title of Captain aboard the ship. These acrobatic pirates turn ship life upside down. Walking the plank becomes the high flying teeterboard and cooking for the crew involves juggling knives and steering the ship spinning upside down in the roue cyr. Head First Acrobats have created a show full of fabulous pirate themed circus mayhem. With amazing acrobatics and hilarious slapstick comedy, this production promises to give all a great time. ‘Arr We There Yet?’ will play at the Brighton Speigeltent: Bosco on 6-7, 13-14, 20-21, 27-31 May and 1-4 June at 2pm. Tickets cost £8 or £6 for concessions.

Oliver in the Overworld

‘Oliver in the Overworld’ is a family musical for 3-7 year olds and their families and is the first ever musical created from scratch with sign language. It’s a funny, surreal and picaresque tale of a little deaf boy who travels to the Overworld - the land of machinery, seeking the parts to mend the memory of his best friend, Oliver the Grandfather Clock. Created with beautiful puppets, magical transformations, 10 super songs, daft dances and featuring fully integrated sign language, this is an ingenious and imaginative theatre show packed with things to laugh at. ‘Oliver in the Overworld’ showcases Krazy Kat’s mastery of visual storytelling, bristling creativity, humour and catchy tunes. Join the Kats in this fast-moving madcap musical adventure. Lasting 55 minutes it’s for families with children ages 3-7 and is suitable for both deaf and hearing audiences. The show will be playing at the Brighton Spiegeltent: Bosco on 7 May at 4 and 6pm. Tickets cost £8 or £6 for concessions.

Changing the World, One School Meal at a Time

Mary’s Meals provides daily meals to more than 1.1 million of the world’s poorest children every day they attend school. The nutritious meals enable children to attend school and learn so they can work towards a more prosperous future. The impact of these daily meals is clear. Independently verified studies have shown that after a year of serving Mary’s Meals, school enrolment increased, attendance improved and teachers reported their pupils were more hopeful for the future. The work of Mary’s Meals began in Malawi in 2002, when the charity set up its first school feeding programme, supporting around 200 children. One of those children was Veronica, who is now studying Education and Business Studies at college.Veronica told Primary Times, “When you are hungry, you cannot be able to think. I used to go to school without food. After receiving Mary’s Meals I was active and able to listen to what the teacher say.” For young people such as Veronica, Mary’s Meals can break down barriers to education and help unlock their future. Mary’s Meals is a grassroots movement, which relies on the dedication and kindness of thousands of volunteers, fundraisers and supporters. In Malawi alone, more than 80,000 community volunteers take turns to cook and serve the meals for the children. Thanks to this cost-effective model, it costs just £13.90 to provide a child with Mary’s Meals for a whole school year. Hundreds of primary schools across the UK have chosen to join the Mary’s Meals movement and learn more about their work. An Education Officer works with primary schools to ensure teachers have the resources they need to share the Mary’s Meals story with children of all ages. Mary’s Meals would love to work with your school. If you would like to find out more about their work, get in touch via email schools@ marysmeals.org – they’d love to hear from you! More information can be found online at www.marysmeals.org.uk

Save the Children’s Den Day Returns

Save the Children’s Den Day, an educational interactive fundraising event for schools, is returning for a third year on Friday 16 June. Den Day calls on schools to join in with a creative, fun adventure as pupils build dens together and raise money to ensure children have a safe place to sleep and play. Schools can sign up now at www.DenDay.org to receive fund raising kits containing everything they need to hold a fun-filled day in the summer term. The kit includes posters, stickers, den ideas and great teaching resources to link Den Day into the curriculum and school’s plans. Teaching resources are designed to fit with the KS1 and KS2 curriculum, encouraging creativity and teamwork, while pupils learn about the challenges that some children face around the world and how their fundraising will help. Schools can raise money however they like, helping pupils get sponsored for their den-building or simply asking all pupils to make a donation for taking part. Right now, millions of children do not have a safe place to sleep or play. Save the Children does whatever it takes to reach children caught up in conflict, fleeing war or persecution or living rough on the street. Help build a better world by raising money and signing up at www.DenDay.org Photo credit: Jonathan Cherry/Save the Children
