Frewen College Students Try a Simpler Life
Frewen Sixth Form students have just returned from a 5 day educational ‘trip of a lifetime’ sailing on board the converted Thames Sailing Barge Thalatta, owned by the charity The East Coast Sail Trust.
Hold a Reindeer Run this December
Last Christmas, 49 schools, nurseries, colleges and groups across Sussex and South East Hampshire took part in a Reindeer Run challenge, raising vital funds for Chestnut Tree House children’s hospice. Children across the region hopped, skipped, jumped and ran for charity, with a range of ‘Reindeer Runs’, from obstacle courses and laps around the playground to themed PE lessons and park runs. Why not get involved in 2017? Chestnut Tree House will provide everything you need for your Reindeer Run event, including free reindeer antlers and red noses for everyone taking part, posters, helpful hints and sponsorship forms. How will your sponsorship money help? Chestnut Tree House currently cares for 300 children and young people with life-shortening conditions across Brighton & Hove, East Sussex, West Sussex and South East Hampshire It costs Chestnut Tree House over £3.5 million each year to provide all its specialist care services The charity receives less than 7% of its care costs from central government funding. £5 pays for one minute of all Chestnut Tree House care services £35 enables a child to experience a magical hour in Chestnut Tree House’s multi-sensory room with a specially-trained member of staff, £230 gives a life-limited child the chance to visit Chestnut Tree House for the day and enjoy a range of activities. For more information on Reindeer Runs and how to get involved, visit www.chestnut-tree-house.org.uk/reindeerruns.
Everything Comes From The Egg “In an urban 21st century world where we are increasingly disconnected from nature I wanted to use this ancient archetypal symbol to nurture re-enchantment with the natural world, as a step toward a sustainable future.” So says acclaimed artist Stephen Turner, the creator of the beautiful and intriguing Exbury Egg. Completing its tour of the nation’s highways, byways and waterways, Stephen Turner’s Egg will charm and fascinate in equal measure when it arrives in The Courtyard at Jerwood Gallery this autumn – 16 September until 15 October. Hastings’ historic Old Town, where Jerwood Gallery is located, will provide a monthlong home for the 6m-long Exbury Egg, giving visitors a chance to explore this wonderful example of British artistry and craftsmanship. The exhibition will feature displays of the diverse ephemera of Turner’s life, including his tools, works in progress and the general disarray of lived-in environment. For more information follow @jerwoodgallery on Twitter and visit www.jerwoodgallery.org. 4

Pupils took a step back in time, to a simpler, slower way of life. They slept in hammocks for the duration of the four night sail and kept their possessions in a sea chest. They took to crewing with good heart and humour, trying all the vital crewing jobs including hoisting the anchor, setting the sails, swabbing the decks, polishing the brass, preparing meals and washing up. For many of the Frewen Sixth Form students this was to be their first experience of sailing. One particular highlight of the trip was when the Frewen crew welcomed a royal visitor on board - HRH Sophie, Duchess of Wessex, Patron of Dyslexia Action, who talked at length with the children. The Duchess of Wessex has a prior connection with Frewen as she opened Frewen’s prep school in 2004. The East Coast Sail Trust is unique in the experience it offers to young people. Thalatta’s working life was spent carrying cargoes of grain between London and Ipswich, but today she is the only wooden barge providing educational cruises. If you would like to know more about Frewen College, visit www.frewencollege.co.uk.
Pedal in Preston Park for Charity
Hop on your bike for a family friendly sponsored bike ride in aid of Martlets Hospice and the Motor Neurone Disease Association at Preston Park on the afternoon of Saturday 14 October. The ride will be taking place safely away from roads on Britain’s oldest velodrome in Preston Park. It’s an ideal cycling challenge for the whole family to enjoy since the laps are just 600 metres long and are perfect for even the littlest of legs to try. The afternoon is a lovely event for all the family and there’s plenty of time so you can all cycle at your own pace. Everyone’s welcome and wheelchair users are encouraged to attend too. Organisers have stressed that all cyclists must be wearing helmets. Participants without one will not be able to take part. There will also be bike mechanics on hand to sort out any punctures. Registration for over 16s is £10 and for under 16s is just £5. Martlets would love participants to raise as much sponsorship as possible ahead of the ride but cyclists who wish to just turn up on the day and make a donation are also welcomed. For more information and to register, please call 01273 747 555 or visit the website at www.themartlets.org.uk.

An Interview with Lauren Child Primary Times have been talking to Lauren Child, the new Waterstones’ Children’s Laureate. A writer and illustrator, she is best known for the Charlie and Lola, Clarice Bean and Ruby Redfort series. She has received numerous awards and was given an MBE in 2010 for her services to literature. Her latest book in the Charlie and Lola series, ‘A Dog With Nice Ears’, is due to be released on 28 September.
nine years old, and as soon as I finished it, I read it all over again. Another is Astrid Lindgren’s Pippi Longstocking. I loved her because she was a child like no other. She was a girl and she was funny and there weren’t enough books about funny girls in those days. She’s very courageous and doesn’t really care what people think about her in the best possible way. She doesn’t worry about what she’s wearing and doing and she is able to be herself.
How does it feel to be the new Waterstones’ Children’s Laureate?
When you were growing up did you feel you could be yourself like Pippi Longstocking?
It is a great honour but it’s also a great responsibility. It feels slightly unreal too, partly because my career began almost 20 years ago, exactly the time Quentin Blake was the first Children’s Laureate. Quentin was a huge influence on my becoming an illustrator. I loved his illustrations really before I knew who he was as a person. There was the Grimble and the illustrations from Betsy Byers 18th Emergency, my favourite book as a child. And I remember watching him on television back in the days when the BBC had a programme called Jackanory. It was so wonderful to see live drawing as the story was told, and in fact Quentin Blake was the first illustrator I realised was an actual real person. It was so different in those days. You didn’t have the same chance to meet authors and illustrators as you do now.
What do you plan to do as Laureate?
I’m interested in championing children’s creativity and I want to encourage children to spend a little of their time looking, listening and making things because they’re driven to create. I’ll be starting a blog soon called ‘Staring Into Space’ where I’m going to hopefully help inspire that. I also want to champion reading and drawing for pleasure and to elevate children’s book illustration to the level of other art forms. I think illustration is seen as something less than fine art, and writing for children as slightly less than writing for adults. I think we can be a little bit patronising about it. That’s a shame, because we know that literature is life-changing for children and the first art we really get up close to is in books. That’s where we begin with reading and storytelling. We do children a disservice if we can’t see and celebrate its power. I also want to talk about diversity, as inclusivity is really important to me. There aren’t enough books written by and about people of all kinds of backgrounds and culture. It’s important because if as a child you don’t see yourself on the front cover of a book then how do you feel part of society?
Which books, authors and illustrators are your main inspirations? I have so many. When I was a child I loved The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett. I remember reading it when I was about
No. I was terrible at being myself. I was very self conscious and worried about what people were thinking - am I wearing the right thing, am I saying the right thing? All of my characters in my books now are at least moving in the direction of being themselves.
How important do you think it is for children to daydream and stare out of the window?
I think it’s vital. You can’t come up with anything without a certain amount of boredom, because boredom is the beginning of invention. Solving problems and letting your mind wander and find the edges of something. It’s how you get to an inspired place and become creative. When I get really stuck in my own work now, I go out and look around at things. I go to the cinema, an art gallery, I put on the radio, I tune into people’s conversations. You hear these amazing things. And when I hear or see something interesting I write it down. You end up with notebooks full of interesting things.
What are you working on now?
I’m writing a chapter book for younger readers, for around six to nine-year-olds. It’s very, very illustrated because I missed drawing so much when I was writing my Ruby Redfort series. So - lots of drawings. My new Charlie and Lola book A Dog With Nice Ears is coming out in the Autumn. It was inspired by looking at all the dogs in the park near our home with my daughter and imagining what kind of dog we would like to have.
Do you have any advice for children that are starting to write?
My advice would be to write what you enjoy. You need to write about something that interests you. It might be something funny that you see out of the window or something that you’ve imagined or about your family. You’ve got to enjoy what you’re writing or you won’t be able to carry on.You’ve got to let things develop, listen, and watch how people talk and interact. Dig deep into your own memory and try and tap into how things feel.
Lauren Child’s latest book in the Charlie and Lola series, ‘A Dog With Nice Ears’, is published by Orchard Books on 28 September and will be available from high street bookstores and online at a recommended priced of £12.99.
Out of School Activities Bird Studios Stage Academy
Bird Studios Stage Academy (BSSA) is where fun meets technical training in the holy trinity of performing arts training: dance, drama and music. Based at Brighton’s newest and shiniest performing arts school, BRICTT, BSSA can confidently claim to be where the best in the business work and train. The lucky BSSA students (ages 6-16) will be taught in high spec newly kitted out studios, by talented professionals. For 3 hours every Saturday, students have an opportunity to train, make new friends and work towards productions. Running alongside BSSA is the Little Stage Academy for younger students. It is the perfect opportunity to inspire confidence and develop a love of performing in much younger children from ages 3-6. Designed around the same principles as Bird Studios Stage Academy, the focus of LSA is to develop the creative imagination of young children while also beginning the necessary steps in their coordination, communication and musical skills that provide the solid foundations of drama, music and dance training. The LSA classes are shorter than BSSA classes, only running at 30 minutes per segment (1 hr 30 in total) to better suit the attention levels of younger children and encompass such things as drama games, team problem solving, physical improvisation and storytelling, basic dance and coordination skills, choreography, rhythm, percussion and singing. To experience a free trial for LSA and BSSA classes, email info@ birdstudios.co.uk, call 01273 699 902 or visit www.birdstudios.co.uk.

Choosing your New School with
A Pull Out and Keep Feature The Primary Times 2017 Choosing your New School feature – the definitive guide to open days for that all important decision.
4.
Grades and Statistics
Of course it’s important to look at the grades the school has been achieving, remember to look at the overall statistics as opposed to just the ones from recent history. Final exam results may depend more on the calibre of the original than anything else but tables which purport to show ‘added value’ also have their drawbacks. Each school year can fluctuate significantly depending on the mix of students, so just because results have gone up/down in the last couple of years, it doesn’t mean the overall standard of teaching has. Look at the general pattern of results and compare these to others in the area.
5. The end of the summer holidays marks the beginning of the latest adventure in your child’s life – choosing a secondary school. This task doesn’t have to be a chore however. You and your child can work together to find the perfect place for them to learn, explore and grow. Here is a list of Primary Times’ top ten tips for choosing a school. 1.
Make a List
2.
Open Days
3.
League Tables and Ofsted
Even if you think you know which school you want to send your child to, it’s important to visit a few just in case, even if it’s just to reaffirm your original choice. Even the best schools can suit some children more than others. Once you have a list of schools in your area, check to make sure each one is logistically possible – does your child meet the entry requirements? Will they be able to travel there easily? Obviously it’s a good idea to visit all the schools you’re thinking of sending your child to. Pay special attention to the environment – you know your child better than anyone so you know best what working atmosphere is most effective for them. Chat to students as well as teachers. It’s good to know that the people teaching want to be there, but if you want a more honest perception of the school you’re more likely to get it from the students. One of the most important things to look for is whether they’re happy – a happy child inevitably means a better education. With all the statistics floating around about schools, it’s hard to know which to trust. Ultimately these reports aren’t everything, especially as their conclusions are usually based on a few days in a school, but they are all still worth looking at. There is a great resource on the government’s performance information website (head to www.gov.co.uk) which gives a detailed and clear analysis of schools in your area.

Word of Mouth
Chat to other parents and locals about the different schools. They may know things (both good and bad) which the schools themselves may not have mentioned. It’s always good to hear from other parents what they wish they had/hadn’t done in hindsight and which questions they wish they’d asked.
Brighton & Hove Buses
Let Brighton & Hove Buses take your child to school safely. Starting secondary school is a big step for your child (and you) and letting them go off on the bus by themselves for the first time can be nerve-wracking. But travelling on Brighton & Hove Buses is safe, easy and enjoyable. Brighton & Hove Buses want every child to feel happy and comfortable on their buses, they offer on-board WiFi on all their buses and phone charging on some. Their drivers will give them a friendly welcome from day one. All drivers undertake an Equality, Diversity, Inclusion and Disability Awareness course as part of their CPC training and all children are welcome, including the ones that may require extra assistance. Brighton & Hove Buses’ routes serve most secondary schools in Brighton & Hove, making bus travel to school the easy option for your child. You can store e-tickets on free busID cards which will save you money and give you assurance that your child always has the bus fare. Visit Brighton & Hove Buses’ new web portal, www. yourschooljourney.co.uk, where you will find all information you might need to do with fares, discounts, routes and FAQ’s. Brighton & Hove Buses are wishing you and your child a happy school start! 4 Sept - 8 Oct ‘17

Choosing your New School
6.
Extra-curricular Activities
Not all learning takes place in the classroom, and it’s often in after school clubs that your child discovers something they are passionate for and may even want to pursue as a career. Extracurricular clubs also open your child up to new friendship groups as well as potentially being beneficial to their mainstream education.
7. Discipline
We all respond to discipline in different ways. Some thrive under supervision and strict rules whereas others find this limiting and hard to work under. Make sure to find out what disciplinary structures are in place at each school and determine which would work most effectively with your child.
8.
Equal Opportunities
9.
Where are their friends going?
10.
Where will your child be happiest?
If your child needs SEN support or struggles in a certain area, what structures are in place to aid them and to make sure they don’t fall behind? Although this shouldn’t dramatically affect your choice, it is worth taking into consideration. If your child finds making friends difficult then you don’t want to make moving schools harder with the added aspect of socialising. However this could also be a good opportunity for your child to boost their social skills, so it’s worth chatting it through to decide what is best. When going to open days or evenings make sure to note your child’s initial reaction and how this changes over the course of the event. Ultimately if your child is happy then that’s the best outcome, and hopefully that will be reflected in their results as well. Above all remember not to worry – despite what the media may say, the standard of our secondary schools is still very high and in many cases getting higher. You are simply picking the best environment to unlock your child’s potential.

Choosing your New School
Buckswood School
Picking the right secondary school is a daunting prospect for any parent. For many it has been years since such big decisions have had to be faced. From September onwards, there will be many Open Days and evenings. Buckswood School advise parents to go and take a good look around, meet other students and decide whether each school is a place you want your child to spend the next 5-7 years laying the foundations for their future. For some the schools in their catchment area just aren’t right. Independent school can often seem out of reach for most, but Buckswood School near Guestling has a large scholarship and bursary fund to help families afford the fees. At Buckswood the school motto is ‘we prepare for life’ and knowing that every child is different, the warm family atmosphere cultivates a safe, secure space for everyone to flourish without fear of failure, building confidence and discovering new strengths to give every student the tools to succeed. Buckswood challenges students to challenge themselves, identifying strengths they didn’t know they had, building their confidence and confidence is the key to their success in life. The curriculum, wide range of clubs and activities, woodland activity centre and specialist sports academies take every student on a voyage that is as unique as they are wherever their talents lie. Each student’s journey will tailor itself around the pupil to bring out their best and reveal strengths that can be applied in the classroom and beyond. Don’t be afraid to take a closer look. Visit www.buckswood.co.uk to find out when the next open day is or call them on 01424 813 813.

St Andrew’s Prep in Eastbourne strives to provide girls and boys with an all-round education that will last a lifetime and teach them the joy of learning and the importance of values, responsibilities and community. St Andrew’s is an inclusive school for children aged 9 months to 13 years where each child is valued and provided with a banquet of opportunities where doing it all is possible and actively nurtured. A range of after-school and optional Saturday morning activities including fencing and rocket-making ensure children learn far more than just key academic subjects. In treating the children as individuals with particular needs, interests and strengths, they learn to celebrate others similarly. Such an education is fostered through high quality teaching within a safe, stimulating and structured environment where St Andrew’s can make the best use of the wonderful outdoor setting by the Downs and the sea, with their very own Forest School and expanse of playing fields within the school campus. St Andrew’s feels that it is an exceptional school, an environment which upholds the finest prep school traditions but also one which is forward thinking in preparing children for life in the 21st century. ‘The Ugly Five’ has been launched in partnership with Tusk, the pioneering charity that supports the people and wildlife of Africa. Meet the latest classic picture book characters from Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler. You’ve probably heard about the ‘big five’ in Africa. Now meet Wildebeest and Warthog, Spotted Hyena, Lappet-Faced Vulture and Marabou Stork. People call them ‘The Ugly Five’, but Donaldson and Scheffler have set out to show that they’re a lot more interesting. Funny and heart-warming, ‘The Ugly Five’ is a joy to read aloud or to yourself. A celebration of creatures that are often unloved, the book stars creatures who rejoice in their ugliness, though their babies tell them they’re perfect just the way they are. ‘The Ugly Five’ will be released on 7 September and will be available online and from selected high street retailers from £8.99. There will also be an exhibition in celebration of the author, Julia Donaldson and the illustrator, Axel Scheffler’s work. ‘A World Inside a Book: Gruffalos, Dragons and other Creatures’ is an interactive exhibition which will take place at Discover Children’s Centre, Stratford on 21 October. Charlie and Lola books are hugely loved by children, parents and grandparents the world over. This new Charlie and Lola picture book features dogs of all shapes and sizes, but while Charlie and Lola mull over, dream and imagine various options, it becomes clear that the qualities of Lola’s ideal pooch seem oddly like those of a…rabbit! A Dog with Nice Ears featuring Charlie and Lola is published on 28 September.
We have five copies of A Dog with Nice Ears, signed by Lauren Child, for Primary Times readers to win. For your chance to win one, tell us what kind of animal Lola’s ideal pooch seems oddly like. See below for details of how to enter.
Win a Jungle Bunch Goodie Bag Based on the award winning French-American-British TV series, the Jungle Bunch are back in their new film ‘The Jungle Bunch Returns’. Maurice may look like an emperor penguin but he’s a real tiger inside. He journeyed from Antarctica to the equator because he believed he belonged there. Raised by a tigress, he’s the clumsiest Kung-Fu master ever. Maurice has a group of friends - Junior the fish, Miguel the gorilla, Gilbert the grumpy tarsier, Batricia the bat, Fred the warthog and Al and Bob, both toads, who together make The Jungle Bunch. Maurice and his friends intend to maintain order and justice in the jungle as Maurice’s mother did before him. But Igor, an evil koala, wants to destroy the jungle once and for all with the help of his army of silly baboons. The Jungle Bunch is released in UK cinemas on 15 September.
For your chance to win one of five Jungle Bunch goodie bags, tell us where Maurice the emperor penguin originally came from. See below for details on how to enter.
