School’s Out for Summer - yes that time has finally arrived - the beginning of the long summer holidays. No more crazy mornings with the stress of getting up, dressed and off to school without being late (in my house certainly...), just long sunny, relaxing days hopefully! Dingile has been searching for listings to make this the best ever guide for what to do this summer holiday. Many of the listings are FREE or low cost so do read through them and mark up the ones you want to go to. Our listings are prepared a long time in advance so to make sure you have the latest details do contact the event nearer the time to make sure they haven’t changed. As many of you will know, we publish comprehensive Open Day tables in the September magazine in our Choosing your New School feature. These are aimed at Year 5 and Year 6 pupils but are handy for everyone to think about. Do look out for that magazine which will be published on 2 September. As we are distributed through primary schools this means that this magazine is the last one that our Year 6 readers will receive. We wish you the very best of luck in going to secondary school. Thank you for taking our magazines home, entering our competitions, sending us artwork and all the lovely comments you send us. We will miss you.

The Summer Reading Challenge

The summer holidays are here and that can only mean one thing – no, not ice cream for breakfast - it’s Summer Reading Challenge time, and this year they’re celebrating their 20th anniversary! To mark the occasion, East Sussex Libraries are blasting off with a Space Chase-themed challenge and they need your little astronauts (aged 4 to 11) to help their space family track down books nabbed by mischievous aliens! Yikes! The good news is your child can save the day by signing up at your local library. Astronauts need to read at least six library books of their choice (this can include eBooks and audio books) to collect special stickers and other rewards along the way – all for free! You can banish boredom to the outer regions of space this summer because, as well as a galaxy of books to choose from, there are games to play too, to add to the intergalactic fun. Once the challenge is completed, your child will receive a medal and certificate. Mission control, please note: each child needs a library card and PIN to join the challenge, and to reserve and download books online. This year’s Summer Reading Challenge will touch back down to Earth on Saturday 14 September when it ends. So, are you ready for an out-of-this-world adventure? Get ready to blast off from Saturday 13 July by visiting www.eastsussex.gov.uk/SRC Shoot for the stars! Read books! And have fun! Illustration © Adam Stower for The Reading Agency 2019

Giant Artwork for Cubs’ New Eco Badge

Over 50 Cub Scouts came together recently for a special event to launch the new edition of their Environmental Conservation Activity badge. Now sponsored by The Salvation Army’s Recycle with Michael initiative - which works with children to divert thousands of tonnes of unwanted clothing and shoes away from landfill - the badge actively encourages Cub Scouts to get involved in environmental conservation in their daily lives. At the badge’s launch event, cubs from 1st St Leonards joined others from across the country and worked alongside professional artists, Lloyd Warbey from Disney’s Art Attack and Suzanne Lynas, to create a gigantic replica of their newly designed badge utilising only recycled materials. The giant piece of art spanned nearly 2,500 sq ft, took over 5 hours to complete, and was made using clothes, shoes, and bedding which was generously donated by the attending Cubs and representatives from Scout Head Quarters. The clothes were then shipped off to the Salvation Army’s sorting office where they will either be recycled or distributed to the charity’s numerous shops across the UK ready for ‘second chance’ purchase.

The new ‘Horrible Mysteries’ attraction is perfect for families. Kids and adults alike, who want their experience to involve some gruesome history/story telling along their journey, will love it. The adults only, ‘Jack the Ripper Walk of Terror’ is an eerie and spine tinkling walk around Whitechapel in 1888. At Halloween this becomes a proper, full on ‘scare attraction’. Located in Hollingbury, Brighton and spread over two floors (covering 25,000 square feet, including a licensed bar/cafe) Phileas Fogg’s literally covers the world. Downstairs they have 16 amazing sets. From Paris, Egypt, Japan,Venice, Wild West, the Jungle - the list goes on. Upstairs they have recreated Victorian London in a maze of streets with shops, a school, a church and more. The multi-million-pound sets have been built by the teams that worked on movies including Harry Potter, Star Wars, James Bond and many more. You will really feel you are there. At Fogg’s every one of your senses is engaged with authentic sights, sounds, smells and touch. Actors will take you on a journey not to be forgotten. If you’re looking to do something with your family, you have the choice of family challenge-based adventures, the Horrible Mysteries Worldwide attraction or the Horrible Mysteries Victorian London attraction. If you’re looking for something to do with your adult friends, you have the choice of the adult challenge-based adventure or the Walk of Terror. The Middle Ages are reclaiming Bodiam Castle this summer. Discover more about the people who would have lived and worked in a medieval castle over 600 years ago. Learn what castle inhabitants such as an archer, a lady and a servant would have worn and try on some of the items they would have used in Bodiam’s dressing up boxes. Find eight character illustrations by Scarlett Woodman, artist and member of the conservation team, hidden in the castle towers. The characters continue to come to life over the school holidays keeping the little ones entertained from Wednesday 24 July though to Wednesday 4 September. During this time the Castle Steward can be found patrolling the courtyard every day, setting missions for children, telling the castle’s history and helping visitors join the National Trust in conserving and caring for this special place. At a Medieval Mop Fair, taking place daily throughout the same period, children can see if they have what it takes to get a job working for Sir Edward and can have the opportunity to become one of the castle characters for the day as they complete various activities. Activities on offer will include object handling including replica medieval armour, costumes and crafts. Finally the whole family can practise their archery skills and enjoy a leisurely walk around the castle grounds. Of course after all of that activity, no visit would be complete without some light refreshments and a souvenir of your day from the gift shop.

Brighton Toy and Model Museum

Situated in the arches underneath Brighton railway station, Brighton Toy and Model Museum is an Aladdin’s cave of rare toys and models from the ‘golden age of toy making’ - a must for all the family. This summer they are very excited to have a new exhibition ‘Lego before Lego’, telling the story of the early days of the Lego Company, from its original wooden toys of the 1930s and 1940s up to the popular plastic toys of the 1960s when the building brick sets became an essential part of modern childhood. It will include original toy shop signage, a variety of different scale vehicles including the classic 1:43 Chevrolet lorries, building blocks, farm vehicles, loveable characters and pull-along toys. This is a rare opportunity to see some of Lego’s early creations crafted before the well-loved plastic brick was launched. Visit the museum’s website at www.brightontoymuseum. co.uk or Facebook page to see all the other great family activities over the summer.

Summer Fun at Rare Breeds Centre

There’s a lot to do at The Rare Breeds Centre this summer and the whole family can enjoy a perfect day out on the 100 acre farm. Daily activities include Meet the Animals sessions, Falconry Displays and of course the famous Pig Racing. There are also many outdoor activities including zip wires, a hill fort, tube maze and a playground for the tots. The kids will love the Mysterious Marsh, the woodland assault course where they can test their agility skills. Visit the colourful and exotic butterfly tunnel and its glorious tropical plants right next to the peaceful Discovery Garden where you can take a moment to relax and then enjoy a walk through the aviary. For the more energetic, there are woodland walks where you can spot the many species of wildlife, build a den and venture to the edge of the Secret Lake for a picnic then find the exciting super-sized snake to climb on. You may also like to follow the footprints to the new Giant’s Chairs if you are brave enough! If you aren’t up for the walk, then take a trailer ride up to the top of the farm where the tractor driver can drop you off. Picnics are welcome but there is a large restaurant offering meals and snacks at very reasonable prices and a patio where you may like to relax. The Rare Breeds Centre is situated on the B2067 between Hamstreet and Woodchurch close to Ashford. For more information, visit www. rarebreeds.org.uk or call 01233 861 493.

WaterAid Voices

International aid charity WaterAid has launched its first-ever voice skill powered for Amazon Alexa. WaterAid Voices, an interactive storytelling experience for schools and families helps to educate children about the state of the world’s water, toilets and hygiene around the world. The skill will take children to a different land entirely to learn about life in the Madagascan village of Tsarafangitra. Through a series of six interactive voice messages, they will learn some handy phrases in the local language, recipes in Malagasy cuisine and how to spot a zebu through quizzes and mini-games. Designed with Key Stage 2 students in mind, this provides the perfect post-school activity for parents who want an interactive, educational and enjoyable past-time for all the family, while raising awareness of an important topic. A shocking one in three of the world’s schools lack adequate toilets, compromising children’s human rights to sanitation and leaving them to either use dirty, unsafe pits, go in the open, or stay at home, resulting in missed school days and loss of potential. WaterAid Voices is one way that the charity hopes to get more people talking about an issue that impacts the lives of many every day, including young people in some of the world’s poorest places. The Children’s Refugee Crisis

Do you sometimes find it hard to explain to your pupils or your children about the refugee crisis? A new book, Forced to Flee, in which refugee children explain, in their own words and pictures, their thoughts, feelings and experiences about being forced to flee their homes for safety has been produced by UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency. This children’s book focuses on three ongoing refugee situations - Syria, South Sudan and Central America. Forced to Flee explains for a young audience how each crisis came about, why children and their families had to flee, the support that they receive from UNHCR and other organisations and what life is like for them now. Harrowing and heart breaking, the artworks by child refugees vividly highlight the impact that conflict and war have on people’s lives. Forced to Flee is an educational title that will support children’s
