Halloween Books to Get Children Reading With Halloween just around the corner, what better excuse is there to get your kids reading? Sterling Publishing have released two new children’s picture books, which take classic tales and give them a spooky, Halloween twist. Complete with captivating illustrations and entertaining characters, not only could these books get your children enjoying reading, they could also educate them in some classic titles. For younger readers, there is a Halloween take on a classic with Moldilocks and the Three Scares - A Zombie Tale. Written by Lynne Marie and illustrated by David Rodríguez Lorenzo, this book promises to give the classic fairy tale a new creepy lease of life. Forget Goldilocks and the Three Bears in this delightfully zombie-tastic new version of the popular story. Papa Scare (a monster), Mama Scare (a mummy) and Baby Scare (a vampire) live in a haunted house where they eat finger sandwiches and alpha-bat soup. One night, they go out to walk their dog (a bloodhound, of course) to let their soup cool down. While they’re away, in walks the zombie Moldilocks, looking for food, a chair and a bed that’s just right. Kids will love this hauntingly funny story with its surprise ending. Moldilocks and the Three Scares - A Zombie Tale is available for £12.99 online and from all good high street stores. For more information about either book, please visit www. sterlingpublishing.com.

Look out for Brighton Science events over half term. WonderFest, a oneday public festival that invites you to explore the future, is coming to Brighton Racecourse on Saturday 26 October. Sunday to Sunday (27 October – 3 November) Hands-On Half-Term workshops will take place all day in the centre of Brighton. Primary Times spoke to Dr Richard Robinson from the Brighton Science. He told us, “One thing is certain. After Brexit we’ll be needing to train home-grown scientists like never before. This should provide a massive stimulus to home-grown scientists. But though schools do their best to teach STEM subjects (Science Technology, Engineering and Maths), it isn’t going to happen if the parents aren’t interested. “Parental engagement can take strange forms. At one of our Family Fun days I watched a big man enter the room with his two young children and survey the turmoil around him. In this particular room the challenge was to build a bridge across a 40 cm gap strong enough to support as many Mars bars as possible, using only four sheets of paper. “Dad’s eyes lit up. He said, ‘Stand aside kids. This one’s for me’. For the next fifteen minutes he was immersed in the task, his children on either side, looked at him as if to say, ‘but… you’re a Dad, not an engineer’. As I watched I didn’t worry that the kids were being ignored. I knew that they were going to be engineers when they grew up. Why? Because as soon as they got a chance they would imitate dad. Imitation is the key to career. What the parents enjoy, that’s what the kids will enjoy. Indeed, after a few minutes they were working on their own bridges, unprompted. Trust me on this. I’m a scientist.”

Happy Halloween and More Days Out...
Safe Trick or Treating in Brighton this Halloween For children, Halloween is the one day in the year when they can dress up as a ghoul and receive free sweets. However, knowing who they can safely trick-or-treat can be a source of worry for parents. To ensure children can enjoy the occasion, and ease the minds of parents, Phileas Fogg’s World of Adventures in Brighton is hosting three special, family friendly, Halloween activities through its series of four-dimensional themed sets. Trick – have a frightening tour of dark and smoky Victorian London. The 30-minute experience is a spooky, gruesome and ghoulish walk through the capital’s streets. Suitable for children from eight years old, it costs £12.50 per person. Treat - Travel from Japan, on-board a ship, take a stint in jail, visit the wild west, travel through a vortex and end in the royal throne room finding treats along the way. Suitable for children age three up, the experience lasts 40 minutes and costs £12.50 per person. Horrible Mysteries – Board a train and take a trip through Venice, Egypt, the jungle and on to India. On the trip you will touch and smell the world of mysteries and learn fun gruesome facts from a plague doctor in Venice through to a mummification in an Egyptian tomb. The attraction is suitable for children from five years old, lasts 40 minutes and costs £9.95 per person.
