Our comprehensive guide to choosing your new school will be invaluable with open days and other information. Please do check the open day dates in our tables. Standing out from the crowd when you’re new in Brighton is no mean feat. Phileas Fogg’s World of Adventures has done exactly that after scooping its third accolade. Crowned as ‘Tourist Attraction of the Year’ in the Brighton and Hove Business Awards 2019, Phileas Fogg beat three iconic landmarks in the city to take the top spot and the title. The award adds to the accolades of Best Family Attraction South East Finalist from Muddy Stilettos, and the highly sought-after ‘Recommended’ Badge on Trip Advisor. Graham Owen, co-founder of Phileas Fogg’s World of Adventures, told Primary Times, “We were delighted when we discovered we had been shortlisted for this award, but we never thought we would win knowing we were up against the likes of Brighton Marina and British Airways i360. We are also really pleased that our friends at Pier Pressure were highly commended in the category for its escape rooms. It was a real-life David and Goliath moment for us. Our visitors give us such amazing reviews so it’s fantastic to receive an industry award that heralds us as a business. Thank you to everyone who voted for us.” For more information about Phileas Fogg’s authentic experiences, please visit www.phileasfoggsworldofadventures.co.uk.

Last Christmas, 54 schools, nurseries, colleges and groups across Sussex and South East Hampshire took part in a Reindeer Fun challenge, raising vital funds for Chestnut Tree House children’s hospice. Why don’t you get involved in 2019? This year the Hospice are inviting even more people to have some Reindeer Fun. Whether you want to Run, Cycle, Row, Ramble, or come up with your own challenge, Chestnut Tree House will provide everything you need for your Reindeer Fun event including free reindeer antlers and red noses for everyone taking part, posters, helpful hints and sponsorship forms. The sponsorship money will help Chestnut Tree House care for around 300 children and young people with lifeshortening conditions across East Sussex, West Sussex and South East Hampshire. It costs Chestnut Tree House over £4 million each year to provide all its specialist care services and the charity receives less than 6% of its care costs from central government funding. £5 pays for one minute of all Chestnut Tree House care services, £35 enables a child to experience a magical hour in Chestnut Tree House’s multi-sensory room with a specially-trained member of staff and £280 allows their Community Team to visit a child at home at the weekend or during the night, often necessary when a child is very poorly. For more information on Reindeer Fun and how to get involved, please visit www.chestnut-tree-house.org.uk.

East Sussex Kids’ Favourite Book Named

A mystery adventure in which a boy’s life changes forever when a giant sinkhole appears under his home has been named East Sussex children’s favourite book. The Jewelled Jaguar, by Sharon Tregenza, came first in a poll of county schoolchildren to claim top prize in the East Sussex Children’s Book Awards, at a ceremony at Eastbourne’s Royal Hippodrome Theatre attended by 130 children. The event was the climax of a series of activities including author events at which the five shortlisted authors read from their book to children at local schools and libraries. The competition saw an initial list of 10 books selected by library staff whittled down to a shortlist of five by children from across the county. Children from across the county then went on to vote for their ultimate favourite. A total of 36 schools took part and 620 children attended author events held in March in Battle, Bexhill, Broad Oak, Eastbourne, Hastings, Newhaven, Seaford and Uckfield. The competition was open to paperback books not forming part of a series, written by UK-based authors, published in the year prior to the competition launch last summer.

Choosing your New School Starting to look at secondary schools? We give you the lowdown on what to do. Applying for secondary school is one of the most important decisions you are going to make because it’s likely to have a huge impact on your child’s future, way beyond the school gates. There’s some essential ‘homework’ to be done before you make that all important choice and you must make sure you know the deadlines for applying via your local authority. For some, it won’t be an issue, as catchment area rules determine your first or other choices, decided by postcode or feeder school. However, for those of you who can choose, the task can seem a daunting one. To help you through the process, follow our tips for some forward planning and get the most out of a school open day.

A Pull Out and Keep Feature

the head teacher talks, take a tour around the school and try talk to some of the current students to find out what they enjoy about it. A school’s building may influence how you feel about it, also the extracurricular activities on offer, the teaching style and general environment. Open mornings are also incredibly helpful as you can see what the school is like during a normal day when students are in lessons. You will hopefully be able to glance into some of the classrooms to see what a typical lesson looks like. You may find things are very different from what you saw at the opening evening. Visiting schools will help to narrow down the list even more and judge which one is right for your child. It may also help to make a pros and cons list of each school you visit so you can remember what you and your child liked and disliked. You may even want to visit the school in both Year 5 and Year 6.

Head to the Open Day

This is one of the most important steps in deciding which secondary school to pick and is designed to help you to gain an insight into what the school is actually like. You can find out the details of open days, open mornings and/or evenings for the schools on your shortlist either from the many included in our tables in this magazine or from the school websites. Make sure you check dates and times, as they can change. If you visit too many schools it may become confusing and sometimes too much choice isn’t helpful. So stick to your shortlist and only visit these ones. Visiting schools with your child can help you to see if they would feel comfortable there and also allows you the opportunity to find out things that weren’t apparent from your earlier research. A school may appear to tick all the boxes when you research it for your shortlist, but when you visit you may realise it’s not the right school for your child. You may never spot this unless you visit. Open evenings are useful events at which you can ask questions, explore the subjects offered and see what facilities the school has available. Make sure to go to Follow us on Twitter - @PT_Sussex

You may be tempted to look at school rankings and Ofsted reports. These can be useful to give more information about exam results and the teaching quality of the school. However, do remember that some schools may be better for different subjects and being lower in the ranking does not mean the school is necessarily worse. Rankings are also vulnerable to change and depend on many factors. Recommendations and what family and friends have to say about their experiences with certain schools can be very useful in your decision-making. You may be more drawn to a school if you know someone who has first-hand experience with it and who can help you with some of your questions.

How to Help Your Child Avoid Maths Anxiety

Unfortunately maths is one of those subjects that can frighten children, a phenomenon recently described as ‘Maths Anxiety’ by University of Cambridge researchers. Exposing children to real life maths can help them see both the value of learning to ‘do’ maths and also that it can be something to be enjoyed. Here are some examples.

Telling the time

Time can easily be discussed with your child, providing an opportunity to talk to them about what is happening and how long until the next event in the day.

Board and Card Games

Board and card games are a great way to introduce mathematical concepts. Take snakes and ladders, your child can learn that dots on a die represent a number, count numbers of spaces and consider which direction to travel in on s Girl Hill gess Bur at Snakes and Ladders the board. A pack of playing cards can reinforce recognition of numbers to 10 and the ways in which they can be represented.

Shopping

Simply reading the price of an item and comparing it with the price of another provides a real world context for exploring greater and less. Older children can estimate the total price of the shopping using rounding and estimating. Labels are full of information and encourage children to work out the best value product by looking at the price by weight or volume.

DIY

DIY is another great opportunity to access real life maths. From counting screws and measuring lengths, up to working out the area of a wall or floor to calculate the required amount of paint or carpet.

Cooking

Cooking of any sort requires counting, weighing and measuring. Older children can explore ratio and proportion by doubling or halving mixtures or to convert between different units of measure, whether metric or imperial. Sharing pizza or cake is a way to explore anything from simple fractions such as halves and quarters to the more complex ideas of equivalence and comparison.

Conclusion

Connecting mathematics to the real world and grounding it in everyday experience gives it value and purpose. Spotting these opportunities to embed learning goes far in the way of preventing and even overcoming the anxiety that too often occurs with the mention of maths. Thank you very much to Shelley Allen, KS1 Teacher and Junior School STEM Coordinator at Burgess Hill Girls. Join Burgess Hill Girls for their Whole School and Nursery Open Day on 28 September from 2pm – 5pm. The whole school will be open - Nursery, Junior, Senior, Boarding and Sixth Form. National Poetry Day

The #MyNPDPoem poetry writing challenge is now open. The challenge encourages schools everywhere to create poems, performances, displays and special books on a grand scale as part of the 25th anniversary of the UK’s biggest celebration of poetry on National Poetry Day, Thursday 3 October. This year’s National Poetry Day theme is Truth, and #MyNPDPoem is inviting students aged 6-13 to express the truths that matter to them in poems. Topics might be the truth about your family or your school for example. Nature might provide inspiration, provoking a poem about the truths the natural world reveals or maybe you want to explore the opposite of truth.

Once children have written a poem or poems, schools or teachers can then share the best on National Poetry Day by tagging pictures on Instagram or Twitter with #MyNPDPoem. Schools can hold their own poetry show on National Poetry Day by inviting everyone to perform their poems aloud, and sharing select extracts as appropriate with the #MyNPDPoem hashtag. The Laugh Out Loud Book Awards 2020 The Laugh Out Loud Book Awards (the Lollies) celebrate the best and funniest children’s books in the UK and Ireland, voted for by children.Voting is now open for the Lollies 2020 – it’s time to get reading and voting for your favourites! Michael Rosen, children’s novelist, poet and former Children’s Laureate, chaired the judging panel which selected the shortlist from nearly 120 titles submitted by children’s publishers. Having long championed humorous books for children, Michael told Primary Times, “Anyone around children looking for books to have them giggling and laughing over and over again, these 12 books will do the job. Funny books are so important because they draw you through, and you have a wonderful time and feel good. What could be better than that?” The Lollies are awarded in three categories: Best Laugh Out Loud Picture Book, Best Laugh Out Loud Book for 6-8 year olds and Best Laugh Out Loud Book for 9-13 year olds. The winning book in each category will be decided solely by children’s votes, with schools and parents encouraged to help kids get involved and voting via the Lollies website,

The winning books will be announced in early 2020.

St Andrew’s Prep is where character is made. Home to over 370 children aged nine months to 13 years, St Andrew’s Prep, Eastbourne is just a five minute walk to the sea at the foot of the South Downs. The school’s talented staff are dedicated to preparing pupils for the fast changing, high-tech world giving lifelong-learning and problemsolving skills alongside leadership and teamwork opportunities and, perhaps most important of all, the tools to become good citizens. In short, St Andrew’s Prep is stimulating the imagination, creativity and inventiveness of every pupil whilst equipping them with the essential qualities of self-discipline, resilience, honesty, kindness and compassion. The school believe in the need to educate children in how to form opinions properly, how to substantiate ideas, how to self-reflect without over-analysing, how to listen and value other opinions, how to think critically and how to be aware of the wider community. In other words, they want to expand the minds of every pupil so that they become more resilient, more compassionate and better listeners. Every child is in a sports team, not just the elite, every child can choose to be in a drama production, everybody takes part in music and the vast majority play at least one instrument. The school is extremely successful. Over the last three years, the school’s Year 8 pupils have won over 90 scholarships to their senior schools. A surprising number of children have reached Grade 8 music and St Andrew’s Prep has won many national and county sporting titles. Mary’s Meals is asking you to bring hope to a hungry child on World Porridge Day, Thursday 10 October. Children all over the world are preparing for the new term, including more than 1.2 million learners who receive a daily meal from Mary’s Meals. The charity works with some of the world’s poorest communities to set up school feeding programmes that encourage children to attend class, learn, and work towards a better future. World Porridge Day celebrates the huge difference that a daily mug of porridge from Mary’s Meals makes in the lives of chronically hungry children. This October, schools across the UK will be joining in with the Porridge Smiles fundraising campaign to send a real message of hope to children living in poverty. Mary’s Meals is inviting you to host a porridge party fundraiser at school, any time in October. It’s a great way to bring staff, pupils and parents together, take a photo of yourself enjoying a bowl of porridge and share it on social media using #PorridgeSmiles. To request your free Porridge Smiles party pack – which includes tips for setting up your party and a poster to publicise your event – visit www.worldporridgeday.com and complete the online form. You’ll also be able to read a selection of Perfect Porridge recipes from celebrities and top chefs too. Your school’s fundraising will make a huge difference to children receiving Mary’s Meals.

The Benefits of Performing Arts Involving your children in the performing arts does so much more than improving their singing, dancing and acting. Often parents see their children become more confident in school, their physical ability improve and a boost in their social skills with a new network of friends.

The performing arts offer children a fantastic platform to be expressive and channel emotions, whilst learning new skills, being active, having fun with other local children and ultimately growing in confidence. They teach life skills such as working in a team, resilience and self-esteem. It is an outlet for children to be active and expressive within a creative setting while using concentration, commitment and determination. The classes enable children to be themselves whilst encouraging them to be social and collaborative with their peers.

BRICTT Academy

BRICTT Academy is where a journey in performing arts starts. BA is unique in that they are the only academy in Brighton that offers a clear pathway in creative arts training from 5 years and beyond. The academy is the little sister to BRICTT (Brighton’s cutting edge drama school) and is run and taught by the very same industry professionals who are involved in BRICTT’s Extended Diploma and the BA (Hons) Performing Arts.

Classes in drama, contemporary vocals, musical theatre and dance are taught at BRICTT in central Brighton every Saturday from 10am 2pm for 8-16 year olds. This September BA will also be opening BRICTT Junior Academy. Classes will be for 5-7 year olds in drama, singing and dance every Saturday from 9-10.30am. BRICTT Academy students are currently working towards an end of year, fully staged production of Legally Blonde at the Circle Arts Centre and an in-house production of Into the Woods. Canal boat holidays are great for families, offering the chance to set off together on an adventure afloat, learning how to steer the boat, work the locks, enjoying traffic-free towpaths, waterside attractions and watching out for wildlife along the way. A canal boat holiday is a great way to enjoy the splendid colours of autumn in the hedgerows and trees that line the waterways, as they are dramatically mirrored in the water. There’s plenty of wildlife to spot along the way as well as foraging opportunities - apples, blackberries, sweet chestnuts, rosehips, elderberries, damsons and sloes all make fabulous ingredients for fresh fruit crumbles and drinks on board. Why not amble along the Ashby to Snarestone and back on a week’s holiday from Drifters canal boat hire base at Braunston. Canal boat holiday-makers can travel to the pretty village of Snarestone and back, travelling a total of 47 miles, passing through eight locks and taking around 32 hours. This largely rural route takes boaters up the North Oxford Canal to Rugby and on to Hawkesbury Junction to join the Coventry Canal. Five miles later, boaters can transfer onto the peaceful lock-free Ashbury Canal, which winds peacefully through countryside for almost the whole of its 22-mile length. From Carlton Bridge to Snarestone, the canal is designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest. Along the way, boaters pass close to Market Bosworth and the site of the Battle of Bosworth Field. There in 1485 the reign of Richard III ended and Henry Tudor became Henry VII, the first of the Tudor monarchs. A canal boat holiday is the perfect way to welcome in the Autumn. Drifters advise that the best age for children to enjoy a canal boat holiday is from ages 7 up. For more information, please visit drifters.co.uk.
