So here’s to the first edition of Primary Times in 2020. Christmas and the New Year holiday seem a long time ago now and in what looks like no time at all we are already at the first school break for 2020. Having looked for some ideas on what is happening over the next couple of months, there are some exciting things coming up as well as some slightly stranger things... Charles Dickens would have been 208 years old on Friday 7 February. For Dickens fans there is a Charles Dickens Museum in London - see www.dickensmuseum.com for details. Then on Monday 10 February it is ‘Umbrella Day’ - don’t forget to take yours with you to school that day! Valentine’s Day is on Friday 14 February, followed by delicious pancakes for Shrove Tuesday on 25 February. World Book Day is on Thursday 5 March. Check out www.worldbookday.com to find out about the 12 special World Book Day books available at £1 each. Sport Relief is back on Friday 13 March. This time they’re asking you to help them take on poverty and injustice in the UK and across the world by getting your kit on and raising some life-changing cash. So whether you walk, dance, swim, floss or round up your mates for a match, order your free fundraising pack, have fun and help to make a real difference. It’s Game On. Visit www.sportrelief.com for the latest details. Our Easter magazine is published on Monday 16 March so look out for it in schools that week - just in time for World Poetry Day on Saturday 21 March, Mother’s Day/Mothering Sunday on 22 March and Spanish Paella Day on Friday 27 March....! What a busy Spring time we’re going to be having.

World Book Day is the registered charity behind the world’s biggest annual celebration of children’s books, with a mission to offer every child and young person the opportunity to read and love books. It is sponsored by National Book Tokens and supported generously each year by the publishing industry, book trade, authors and illustrators. Every year, with a host of publishers, World Book Day curates a list of bespoke £1 books for children and young people across the UK and Ireland, which they can choose for

free at their local bookshop or supermarket using their £1 World Book Day book token. This year’s list of £1 books is the most diverse to date and packed with best-selling authors and illustrators. International bestseller Anthony Horowitz returns to the secret world of MI6 with new classified files from Alex Rider. Onjali Q Raúf, founder of Making Herstory and multiaward-winning author of The Boy at the Back of the Class, shares The Day We Met the Queen. For older readers there is empowering new non-fiction from author of You Are Awesome, award-winning journalist and former Olympian, Matthew Syed. The Kissing Booth (one of Netflix’s most successful films of 2018) continues in The Kissing Booth: Road Trip! by Beth Reekles, and Split, a powerful new story by the author of I Am Thunder and winner of the Branford Boase award, Muhammad Khan, will also be available. Share a Story is the theme at the heart of a three year World Book Day campaign, encouraging parents and carers to go beyond dressing up to read and share stories with their children for ten minutes every day. Sharing stories together – anywhere, anytime – for just ten minutes a day has long-lasting effects on a child’s future. World Book Day aims to inspire new reading habits for adults and children, underlining just how important this shared time is. The organisation is bringing together some of the most influential people in the country - from celebrities and TV presenters, to politicians and sports stars - to promote reading for pleasure and asking them to #ShareaStory on 5 March. The day also sees children bringing books to life through an array of organised events and activities in schools, bookshops, libraries and at home. World Book Day will be taking place on the 5 March. Brighton Run2Music Invites Children to Try out Scootathlon

On Saturday 30 May, Brighton Run2Music on Madeira Drive will be including an extra race especially for children. For the past few years, the Scootathlon has been a part of the Brighton and Hove Triathlon, but now little ones get to race twice a year as it’s also going to be included in the sister event Run2Music. John Lunt, the race director, told Primary Times, “It’s an extremely fun way to keep youngsters healthy and active. It is also great seeing them get so excited about racing with their friends. We are expecting over 120 to race in the Scootathlon and be part of a great, family fun day out at Brighton Run2music”. One of the parents whose son did the Scootathlon at the Brighton and Hove Triathlon told us, “I think it is a great idea to offer Scootathlon wherever the venue allows it. As children have so much energy, it is great to give them an outlet for it”.

continue to learn and develop their passion for exploring. Guests will learn fun facts along the way about the species of sharks and other amazing creatures that call the aquarium home. This latest activity marks an exciting new partnership with family favourite, Top Trumps card games, which many know from the endless hours of fun provided as children. There will even be the opportunity for visitors to challenge the aquarium staff to see how many cards they can collect as they navigate the trail. At the end of the trail guests will meet the crazy Professor Finn, who will be so relieved to have his cards back that he’ll be able to share his vast knowledge on all of the sea creatures that were spotted. Jawsome Sharks and Friends will be an interactive experience where all trainee rangers can touch and feel real artefacts and objects from the deep, including real razor-sharp teeth alongside other sea creature items. The experience will be running from 15 February to 19 April. For more information and to book your tickets, visit www.visitsealife.com.

For those wishing to opt for a slower pace of life, there are the options of ceramics, origami, art masterclasses or even board games or bingo. The technology available at Bede’s allows children to try drone flying, animation or film production. Meanwhile, those interested in the performing arts can attend an array of dance clubs, LAMDA lessons or practise in the orchestra, choir or rock band. Enrichment Programme at Bede’s

How a school approaches its enrichment programme tells you all you need to know about what it wants for its children. At Bede’s the activities they offer allow children to share enthusiasms and develop interests, providing them with choice and the chance to do something simply for its intrinsic pleasure. Activities and clubs run throughout and after the school day, with children from Year 3 to Year 8 choosing activities from a programme which is shaped by the pupils themselves and which changes every term. Children can learn anything from the art of debating or journalism to first aid and life skills such as sewing and letter writing. Sporting options feature heavily, whether that be traditional team sports or climbing, sailing, horse-riding, kayaking or trampolining.

When it comes to saving the planet, Claremont is definitely open for business. Building on the brilliant year round work of the school’s Eco Warriors as they pursue Green Flag Status, pupils from Year 7 and 8 decided to launch The Claremont Eco Store to sell environmentally friendly products directly to parents and friends. Believed to be among one of the first of its kind in a school, The Eco Store has gone from strength to strength since it first opened its doors last November. The school started with humble beginnings and a modest stock list chosen and marketed by the children themselves. Stock included eco-friendly shampoo, body wash and refillable bottles. However, the Eco Warriors have been able to reinvest in their business and expand their product range. The new line includes soap bars, washing up liquid, reusable straws and face pads, truthbrushes, bamboo cotton buds, dental floss and top selling toilet paper - Bumboo. With the help of the charity One Tree Planted, the children decided that for every £10 in takings they would plant a tree. Ten trees were planted in Kenya on the Eco Store’s opening day and 17 the following week. This year the children have decided that further donations will now go

The years have been kind to Maleficent and Aurora. Their relationship, born of heartbreak, revenge and, ultimately, love, has flourished. Yet the hatred between man and the fairies still exists.
