Learning Outside the Classroom Day There were some unusual activities afoot at Ashford School during Learning Outside The Classroom Day on Friday 7 September. It was a far cry from the more conventional lessons you might expect. Instead of maths, languages or science, students and teachers were invited to take part in things such as Human Knot, Cross the River, Den Building and Tin Can Man. LOC Day is designed to promote vital life skills such as teamwork, diversity and leadership, all within a fun, safe and energised environment that allows participants to express themselves. Den building was a particular favourite, bringing the indoors outside. It was a practical session on how to create a den with limited resources, where children can claim their own creative territory. The Human Knot demanded a high level of teamwork to unravel a tangle of limbs without letting go of your neighbour’s wrist, and Crossing The River required similar teamwork, as well as offering individuals the chance to express budding leadership skills. Also included were less strenuous activities such as Willow Making, Story Telling, Bread Making and Land Art. Everyone involved had a lot of fun, and gained enormously from the experience, which is surely the best of all learning environments.

Canterbury Festival With the summer holidays a distant memory, October Half Term is fast approaching and the Canterbury Festival is bursting at the seams with family-friendly events for all ages from disco dancing to slapstick comedy, puppetry to pub quizzes, and gory history to forensic investigations. Big and small humans can enjoy entertainment of all varieties from 20 October to 3 November. Canterbury Festival’s Family Fun in the Festival Spiegeltent will keep the little ones entertained including discodancing for babies and creating art out of Agar jelly - there’s something for everyone. The Festival’s family friendly programme takes place across two weekends, 20-21 and 27-28 October, mainly in the Spiegeltent – a stunning 1920s vintage travelling dance hall that lends itself to cabaret, variety and all sorts of silliness. Seating is flexible, there’s a buggy park area, and plenty of space for smaller siblings to crawl and toddle. Children under 1 go free. So roll up and visit www.canterburyfestival.co.uk for more information. Photo credit: James Bellorini

Mr Paul Curnow, Head of Forest School and Year 3 Form Teacher at Spring Grove School, has been nominated for a prestigious national education award in recognition of his and Spring Grove School’s commitment and passion for learning outside the classroom. Paul now faces a public vote to find out if he will take home the title of Inspiring Educator. Mr Curnow’s passion for outdoor learning, cultivated during his time in the British military, was the inspiration behind the successful introduction of the Forest School programme at Spring Grove School – an innovation that saw Spring Grove School achieve a UK and Kent first at the start of November 2017 after being recognised as the first independent school in the UK, as well as the first setting of any type in Kent, to be approved by the Forest School Association (FSA) as a recognised Forest School Provider. Spring Grove School have now also launched a programme of Beach School sessions for pupils at the School on the local Kent shoreline.Their lessons not only saw the pupils beach cleaning, but also inspired them to launch their own plastic recycling programmes at the school. They even pioneered a week of ‘Snow School’ during early March 2018, when the School stayed open despite the poor weather. Paul is also working with other members of staff to bring a first beehive to Spring Grove School.

Robozuna A new children’s action-packed animation series Robozuna arrives on CITV over the next few weeks. The series is the ultimate bot-battling-bot competition and these aren’t just any bots, they are Combatabots. Robozuna follows the story of 14-year-old Ariston, and his homemade robot friend Mangle who live in a world where the oppressive Corvus Imperium rule the land with an iron fist and an army of Centurions, destroying anything they can’t control. You have to be ready to battle, anytime, anywhere. There is one escape for the masses - Robozuna, a fun and thrilling competition, where heroes are not only born they are, quite literally, built. When the Corvus Imperium destroys the nomadic colony where Ariston and Mangle live, they are left isolated and homeless. Going in search of a sanctuary they find it with Team Veredus, a Robozuna team with a secret agenda. Their leader Lanista, sees Robozuna as a way of uniting the land’s disjointed tribes into one fighting force who can march on Corvus and restore freedom to the people.

Tackling the Bush

A group of intrepid Ashford Year 5s set off on the adventure of a lifetime as they joined The Bushcraft Company for a few nights of camping. The annual trip for Ashford Prep School’s campers promised three days of camp fires, adventure and unusual activities. Throughout their stay, group chants, lake swimming, fish gutting and a good dose of the outdoors entertained the children. Split into teams, they tackled multiple character building activities. The groups became first aid heroes when they saved

Friends of the Earth have launched the latest edition of its Clean Air Schools pack inviting schools everywhere to monitor air quality around them and engage children, parents and teachers in the fight for clean air. The free Friends of the Earth’s Clean Air Schools pack has already equipped 950 schools with air quality monitoring tubes that test Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) levels. It also taught pupils campaigning skills to make their voices heard including how to write a persuasive letter to politicians and how to run a poster competition to raise awareness in their school. With the risks of breathing toxic air still slipping under the radar of many parents, Friends of the Earth is calling for a range of measures, including Clean Air Zones, to fight air pollution and improve the health of children’s lungs everywhere. These findings also highlight the need for better public health communications when it comes to the risks of children breathing toxic air – especially when exposed to vehicle fumes outside the school gates. Schools can order a clean air schools pack at www. friendsoftheearth.uk/cleanair and choose ‘Clean Air Schools Pack’.

In the true style of a Bush Tucker Trial, some brave and willing volunteers were excited to be able to start their dinner with a fish eye. Mrs Furnival Brown, the Lead Teacher on the trip told Primary Times, “It was amazing to watch the children’s characters grow even in the few day’s that we were camping! They embraced the opportunity to explore and let go, and were rewarded with lasting memories alongside muddy clothes and a greater taste for adventure.”

Anything Nose in Schools Next March

Red Nose Day is back for 2019, and Comic Relief is calling on all teachers to clear their school’s diary on Friday 15 March to take part in the epic fundraising extravaganza. Red Nose Day is a time in the school year that students remember for a lifetime - donning a nose, dressing up and coming up with all kinds of wacky ways to raise funds for a good cause. It isn’t just an exciting opportunity to take part in a fantastic day of fundraising. Red Nose Day also gives students a great chance to learn more about the world around them and how Comic Relief is working to support vulnerable people both at home in the UK and around the globe. To help schools get red-y for a day of fundraising and events, teachers can now preorder a free fundraising pack tailored specifically for primary schools. The packs are bursting with ideas – fundraising guides, posters, stickers and balloons – to help ensure schools will have an unforgettable time. Comic Relief also offers school curriculum materials and videos that teachers can use to help raise awareness of the world around them and those living incredibly tough lives. To have these tips, tools and classroom ideas land in your school’s post box this January, pre-order your pack now – just head to www. rednoseday.com/primarytimes. Comic Relief is a registered UK charity that aims to create a just world, free from poverty – where everyone is safe, healthy, educated and empowered. Since 1985, Comic Relief has raised over £1 billion. That money has helped, and is helping, people both here at home in the UK and across the world. For more information about Comic Relief and the work it carries out, please visit www.comicrelief.com.

Design the Primary Times Christmas Card!

Win a Grinch Goody Bag

Every year, we at Primary Times send out thousands of Christmas cards and we’d like you to help us create the picture for this year’s card. It can be any picture you like to do with Christmas in some way.You might like to make it Father Christmas, a snowman, Rudolf with his red nose or maybe a nativity scene. You can draw or paint your picture on an A4 or A5 piece of card or paper. Our picture shows our card from last year which was designed for us by Oliver Carpenter from St Joseph’s Primary School. See the bottom of this page for details of how to enter but please note that the closing date for this competition is

Competitions

Competitions The Grinch, based on Dr Seuss’ beloved holiday classic, tells the story of a cynical grump who goes on a mission to steal Christmas, only to have his heart changed by a young girl’s generous holiday spirit. Each year at Christmas the Grinch’s neighbours in Who-ville disrupt his tranquil solitude with their increasingly bigger, brighter and louder celebrations. When the Whos declare they are going to make Christmas three times bigger this year, the Grinch realises there is only one way for him to gain some peace and quiet. He must steal Christmas! However, as Christmas approaches, Cindy-Lou’s goodnatured schemes threaten to collide with the Grinch’s more nefarious ones. Funny, heart-warming and visually stunning, it’s a universal story about the spirit of Christmas and the indomitable power of optimism. The Grinch will be released in cinemas on 9 November. Primary Times has five The Grinch goody bags to give away. To be in with a chance of winning one, tell us what colour the Grinch is? For details of how to enter see below.

Friday 2 November. Teachers and schools are very welcome to send in a whole class’s entries in a single envelope. The winner will see their design used for the Primary Times Christmas card and will also receive fifty copies of the card with envelopes.

There will also be runner up prizes of five more family annual passes for two adults and two children. There’s plenty going on this October Half Term at Leeds Castle. Look out for characters such as Vinnie the Vampire and Frank Frankenstein on the trail and collect your chocolate reward at the end. There’s also a fun new haunted trail for younger visitors through the Woodland Walk, a ‘Monster Mash Ball’ and daily fancy dress competitions with prizes for the best costumes. If you’re brave enough, visit Leeds Castle this half term for ghoulish games and frightening fun for all ages.
