Mermaid Fun and Teenage Fitness Has your child always dreamt of being a mermaid? WetWetWet Swim School can now make that possible for you. Mermaid Classes will be starting in Brighton and Upper Beeding in January 2019. Swimmers can learn to swim like a mermaid using a Mermaids mono fin along with a Mermaids tail, not only will they feel like a mermaid, they’ll look like one too. Classes will teach children and teenagers ‘mermaid skills’ in a safe, fun and progressive environment. The lessons are for competent swimmers (25m plus) and will teach you how to flip your fin and make a splash. In Mermaid Fun (7-11 years), classes will include butterfly skills, synchronized swimming and a lot of core fitness work. This is a great form of exercise and a lot of fun. Certificates will also be awarded. Mer-Teen Bootcamp classes (ages 11+) will provide an all over body workout, engaging leg, arm and core muscles so strength, endurance and flexibility improve. Participants must be able to swim 25m confidently, float on their back and tread water for 60 seconds. The Mer-Teen Bootcamp classes are a genuine workout, enabling swimmers to engage the whole body in ways they never normally would with regular swimming. Mermaid classes are endorsed by the Royal Lifesaving Society. With gift vouchers available, give your child the gift of becoming a mermaid this Christmas. For more information, call 01273 388 247, email info@wetwetwetswimschool.co.uk or visit www. WetWetWetSwimSchool.co.uk

Brighton Science Festival Brighton Science Festival is moving to October. Next year it’ll be settled in its new location, with the universities of Brighton and Sussex leading the charge to bring science to the streets of Brighton, with their terrific displays and talks. This October the guys from Brighton Science Festival planned to do something small, a sort of place-holder Festival-ette, but it grew. February’s Hands-On HalfTerm did so well that they find themselves with a really exciting new programme for October Half Term (20-26 October). Big Science Saturday is, as usual, a brainful. And the Sallis Benney will be bursting on Monstrous Sunday, as we all torment ourselves over our troubled love-child, the computer. For more information, visit www.brightonscience.com.

Nestlé Waters UK is partnering with recycling charity, RECOUP, and environmental education organisation, Wastebuster, to roll out a plastics education programme, R-Generation, which will be available to every primary and secondary school in the UK. The initiative aims to help children understand the responsibility they have in becoming more environmentally aware citizens.

A host of materials and resources suitable for KS2 and KS3 are available for free to schools. They include teacher notes, assembly guides, games, quizzes and fact sheets. The materials will help to motivate students, teachers and staff to recycle more, and to think of plastic waste as a useful resource. A competition supports the launch of the programme, getting students to create something with a new purpose from their recycling at home. The winning applicant will win their school £500 towards their recycling efforts as well as a recycling session hosted by the R-Generation partners. Entries should contain a picture of the invention with a 100-word description and be sent to group.nestlewaters@cirkle.com. Schools can download the resource pack for free at www. recoup.org/p/319/external-publications.

Autumn and Winter at Brighton Dome

Ropetackle is a vibrant arts venue at the heart of Shoreham’s community. Although live music is Ropetackle’s mainstay, they are very mindful of the need for easily accessible and affordable family shows. These often have an educational slant. In November for example, they have a children’s literature festival and a steady stream of films and story-telling. Visit www. ropetacklecentre.co.uk for details. This year’s Panto is Robin Hood which promises a lot of fun and capers for children of all ages. The evil Sheriff of Nottingham is fed up with his riches being robbed. He has a dastardly plan to capture the finest archer in the land and become the supreme ruler of Sherwood Forest. Will good win out? Will love triumph? Don’t miss this feast of fun, fair maidens, fabulous panto magic and the usual madness and mayhem everybody has come to expect in Shoreham come Christmas! Ropetackle is a small non-intimidating venue and there’s even a relaxed performance for the more sensitive members of the audience.

Young audiences and their parents have a diverse raft of shows to explore in Brighton Dome’s Autumn/Winter season. It’s been a long day for Dad and he can hardly keep his eyes open. Autumn Adventures Fun Days Out with the Family Spooky Half Term Fun at Newhaven Fort

British Airways i360

There’s a lot to keep kids entertained at British Airways i360 this half term, and best of all, kids go free between 22 and 26 October. As the glass viewing pod glides up slowly to 450ft, share magical moments together pointing out landmarks, artwork on the rooftops, windfarms out at sea and the rolling coastline stretching away to the horizon. Two children can go free per paying adult (includes Resident Members). For a Halloween treat, the Family Ghost Stories event promises some spooky fun. Brighton wasn’t always such a picturesque place, and every so often reminders of its gruesome past come creeping out of the underworld. For a ghoulish flight above the city, join them in the British Airways i360 pod and hear chilling stories about the hideous apparitions that haunt the streets and beaches below. The Halloween event will take place on Wednesday 31 October at 6pm. For more information about any of the events and to book tickets, please visit www.BritishAirwaysi360.com.

Step inside Newhaven Fort this October Half Term from 20 - 28 October and discover a host of horribly fun Halloween activities to keep the whole family entertained. If you dare, descend into the terrifying tunnels of the Eastern Magazine for a twisted tour through a post-apocalyptic world filled with a variety of scary live characters. Then, explore the ‘abandoned’ city of Seaview, with its shop, video arcade, graveyard, prison and pub – who knows what surprises lie around every corner? For those who daren’t venture into the depths there’ll be quizzes and crafts to keep you amused too.Visit the drop-in craft sessions that run daily in the Activity Centre, where you will be able to create your own creepy creatures, a bat to ‘hang about’ with or you can even spin a yarn with a spidery companion. To explore even more, you can follow the trails around the Fort and see what gruesome goodies await you in the witch’s cauldron. Who knows what you will find? No matter if you enjoy a fright or not, there is something for everyone this Halloween, and all this is included in the standard admission price, so drop by with your witches hat and visit for a spooky Half Term of fun! Don’t forget all the Fort’s other attractions will be open as usual. Find out more information at: www.newhavenfort.org.uk

Autumn Adventures

Enjoy a Ghoulish Adventure

There’s a spook-tacular charity event happening during the October Half Term – with families urged to book their places now to avoid disappointment. The Halloween Pumpkin Hunt has been organised by Demelza Hospice Care for Children with events taking place in Hastings and a number of other places such as Gravesend, Chislehurst, Greenwich, Sevenoaks, West Malling and Whitstable on Thursday 25 October and Friday 26 October. With each event, pumpkins will be on display with various retailers and at local landmarks. Children will be required to hunt for them around their local town while picking up treats from shops and businesses along the way. Children are encouraged to wear fancy dress with lots of witch, wizard, bat, cat and monsters costumes expected. The best Halloween costume in each location will win a prize and winners from each town will then be judged against each other for the chance of winning a Merlin family pass. The whole family are invited along for some frightfully good fun. The Halloween Pumpkin Hunt takes approximately one hour to complete and is open to children aged 3-11. Those taking part will be given their own Pumpkin Passport to get stamped and will be given treats at stops along the route. The Halloween Pumpkin Hunt costs £5 per child and grown-ups can go along for free. Find out more at www.demelza.org.uk.

Forest School Adventure

Learn how to light a fire without matches, build a shelter to sleep in, cook on a fire, hunt for bugs and much more. Forest School Adventure is the ultimate guide for children of how to interact with nature and gain outdoor skills to bring them closer to the natural environment. There is something for all ages; younger children can be immersed in messy play and crafts, whilst older ones can learn more complex skills such as sourcing water and how to light a fire safely. Filled with simple steps children can learn how to build shelters, identify plants and tie different knots which will help them to gain knowledge on what it is like to survive in the outdoors. This advice is given by authors Naomi Walmsley and Dan Westall who are bushcraft experts and educators with the passion for teaching others how to get the most of the great outdoors safely. Having undertaken a five-month Stone-Age immersion in the US, where they lived in the wilderness without any modern equipment, the book is filled with their helpful advice of what they experienced and entertaining anecdotes.

trails and crafts which are taking place on 27 and 28 October. If that’s not enough to scare you, pre-book the family ghost from 5-8pm for even more thrilling fun. Visit the Winter Craft and Gift Fair taking place on 10 and 11 November for a magical start to the Christmas period. There are tasty treats and festive entertainment with dozens of stalls, decorations and music, all to enjoy in the beautiful site. You can step back in time this December with the Christmas at the Priory weekends celebrating Christmas through the ages. Experience a unique, Tudor Christmas on 1 and 2 December, a Victorian ‘A Christmas Carol Christmas’ on 8 and 9 December, and an Evacuee’s Christmas on 15 and 16 December. These exciting events will feature period crafts, food displays, dancing and more - it is the perfect way to have a family day out whilst helping children to learn what Christmas was like in the past. There is certainly plenty on offer this autumn and winter at Michelham Priory that the whole family will enjoy. For more details visit www.sussexpast.co.uk

Win a box of books for your school

Win a Grinch Goody Bag

Competitions

Competitions The Grinch, based on Dr Seuss’ beloved holiday classic, tells the story of a cynical grump who goes on a mission to steal Christmas, only to have his heart changed by a young girl’s generous holiday spirit. Each year at Christmas the Grinch’s neighbours in Who-ville disrupt his tranquil solitude with their increasingly bigger, brighter and louder celebrations. When the Whos declare they are going to make Christmas three times bigger this year, the Grinch realises there is only one way for him to gain some peace and quiet. He must steal Christmas! However, as Christmas approaches, Cindy-Lou’s goodnatured schemes threaten to collide with the Grinch’s more nefarious ones. Funny, heart-warming and visually stunning, it’s a universal story about the spirit of Christmas and the indomitable power of optimism. The Grinch will be released in cinemas on 9 November. Primary Times has five The Grinch goody bags to give away. To be in with a chance of winning one, tell us what colour the Grinch is? For details of how to enter see below.

Primary Times are offering schools the chance to win a selection of great books for their library. We have a whole box full of titles from super stories to fun educational books. There will also be runner up prizes of five more family annual passes for two adults and two children. There’s plenty going on this October Half Term at Leeds Castle. Help Monster Hunter Valerie Van Helsing on a quest to investigate ‘The Case of the Halloween Monster’, but watch out for Halloween bandits along the way! Look out for characters such as Vinnie the Vampire and Frank Frankenstein on the trail and collect your chocolate reward at the end. There’s also a fun new haunted trail for younger visitors through the Woodland Walk, a ‘Monster Mash Ball’ and daily fancy dress competitions with prizes for the best costumes. If you’re brave enough, visit Leeds Castle this half term for ghoulish games and frightening fun for all ages.
