The Nutcracker & the Four Realms

All Clara wants is a key – a one-of-a-kind key that will unlock a box that holds a priceless gift from her late mother. At her godfather Drosselmeyer’s holiday party, a golden thread leads her to the key; however it disappears into a strange and mysterious world. It’s there that Clara encounters a soldier named Phillip, a gang of mice and the regents who rule over three Realms: Land of Snowflakes, Land of Flowers and Land of Sweets. Clara and Phillip must brave the ominous Fourth Realm, home to the tyrant Mother Ginger. Will they retrieve the key and return harmony to the unstable world? Featuring the Sugar Plum Fairy, Disney’s new magical holiday feature film “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms” is inspired by E.T.A Hoffmann’s classic tale and is in cinemas from 26 October.

Well Done Rob Rob Platt, a Bikeability instructor has won national recognition for his work with hearing-impaired schoolchildren in Littlehampton. Rob won The Association of Bikeability Schemes’ Instructor of the Year award for his tuition at River Beach Primary School’s Special Support Centre. He worked with all 13 children from the centre who range from reception age to Year 6, with varying degrees of ability. Rob told Primary Times, “The children have benefited massively from the chance to ride a range of bikes and to have dedicated, focused training. The sense of pride and satisfaction I’m feeling at the end of every session is as much as I’ve ever felt in my life.” Our picture shows Rob using a tandem to help teach pedalling techniques to a River Beach Primary pupil. Bikeability, which used to be known as Cycle Proficiency training, is designed to ensure children gain practical skills and understanding of how to cycle on today’s roads. It gives them the skills and confidence for all types of cycling and is governed by national standards.

R-Generation Nestlé Waters UK is partnering with recycling charity, RECOUP, and environmental education organisation, Wastebuster, to roll out a plastics education programme, R-Generation, which will be available to every primary and secondary school in the UK. The initiative aims to help children understand the responsibility they have in becoming more environmentally aware citizens.

The Grinch

The Grinch tells the story of a cynical grump who goes on a mission to steal Christmas. Benedict Cumberbatch lends his voice to the infamous Grinch, who lives a solitary life inside a cave on Mount Crumpit. Rigged with inventions and contraptions for his dayto-day needs, the Grinch only sees his neighbours in Who-ville when he runs out of food. Every Christmas, the Whos disrupt the Grinch’s tranquil solitude with their celebrations, and when they declare they are going to make Christmas three times bigger this year, the Grinch realises he must steal Christmas. Meanwhile, Cindy-Lou is plotting to trap Santa Claus on Christmas Eve so that she can thank him for helping her overworked single mother. As Christmas approaches however, her good-natured scheming threatens to collide with the Grinch’s more nefarious one. Will Cindy-Lou achieve her goal or will the Grinch succeed in silencing the Whos’ holiday cheer once and for all? The Grinch will be in cinemas on 9 November.

To be in with a chance of winning one of five The Grinch goody bags, send an email to competitions@primarytimes.biz with ‘The Grinch’ as the subject by Friday 9 November. Don’t forget to include your name, age, address, school and contact telephone number.

A host of materials and resources suitable for KS2 and KS3 are available for free to schools. They include teacher notes, assembly guides, games, quizzes and fact sheets. The materials will help to motivate students, teachers and staff to recycle more, and to think of plastic waste as a useful resource. A competition supports the launch of the programme, getting students to create something with a new purpose from their recycling at home. The winning applicant will win their school £500 towards their recycling efforts as well as a recycling session hosted by the R-Generation partners. Entries should contain a picture of the invention with a 100-word description and be sent to group. nestle-waters@cirkle.com. SEA LIFE Ascarium

Take a step into the creepy deep at SEA LIFE in Brighton this Halloween and navigate the Ascarium, an immersive trail which takes you past some of the scariest sea creatures. For a limited time only, from Saturday 20 October to Sunday 4 November, five potion ingredients will be hidden in various tanks throughout the Ascarium. Guests will need to find them before making their way to the Sea Witch’s lair. Along the way, you will discover facts about some of the freakiest creatures of the sea. Once all of the items have been located, the Sea Witch will cast her magic spell and open the treasure chest, giving those who successfully navigate the trail a reusable Ascarium cup. There’s also a chance for one lucky family to win a trip to Alton Towers!

This advice is given by authors Naomi Walmsley and Dan Westall who are bushcraft experts and educators with the passion for teaching others how to get the most of the great outdoors safely. Having undertaken a five-month Stone-Age immersion in the US, where they lived in the wilderness without any modern equipment, the book is filled with their helpful advice of what they experienced and entertaining anecdotes. Forest School Adventure will educate children on how to be safe and imaginative in the outdoors, whilst also helping families to reconnect to the wild in an exciting and creative way. Halloween at Petworth

Well known amateur scientist Elizabeth Ilive lived at Petworth House until 1803 and Mary Shelley, author of Frankenstein, briefly lived in West Sussex at about the same time. Putting the two together this October Half Term, Petworth House and Park are presenting a family-friendly twist on Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. They are on the lookout for science assistants to piece together what happened after an experiment by Elizabeth Ilive goes horribly wrong. In this disastrous experiment, lightning has accidentally hit the recently uncovered Pet Graves and something not so soft and cuddly has woken up. From chew marks to dug up holes and missing bones, something is terrorising Petworth. To make things more macabre, Petworth House has some spook-tastic story telling at selected times in the Servants’ Quarters in order to set the scene, with a prize on-hand for those that work out what happened. As part of the trail, Petworth invites visitors to explore the exhibition on Elizabeth Ilive.Visitors can don an apron and goggles and discover more about the scientific achievements of this pioneering woman. Continuing the creepy capers, Petworth also invites visitors to bring their broomstick, sharpen their fangs and drop in for some craft activities, making Halloween decorations to take home. Create a ghoulish pumpkin garland, a petrifying paper jack-o’-lantern or a hanging bat to add a touch of the horrific ahead of Halloween. Whether it’s a mad scientist, witch or ghost, dress to distress this autumn half term and prepare for the most horrifying Halloween at Petworth House and Park yet. For more information about Petworth and opening times visit www.nationaltrust.org.uk/petworth

Autumn at the National Trust

In the gardens, pumpkins are crying out for carving and nature trails won’t explore themselves. Dig out your favourite snuggly jumpers, stick on your wellies and bring the whole family out this half term to enjoy the most colourful, crunchy, tasty and spooktastic of British seasons. There are also all kinds of family-friendly trails and Halloween events on offer this half term so the kids certainly won’t get bored. From a haunted Halloween hunt at Alfriston Clergy House to spooky bat walks at Standen and creepy crafts at Petworth House, the National Trust will fill children’s half term with frightening fun. Competitions

Competitions The Grinch, based on Dr Seuss’ beloved holiday classic, tells the story of a cynical grump who goes on a mission to steal Christmas, only to have his heart changed by a young girl’s generous holiday spirit. Each year at Christmas the Grinch’s neighbours in Who-ville disrupt his tranquil solitude with their increasingly bigger, brighter and louder celebrations. When the Whos declare they are going to make Christmas three times bigger this year, the Grinch realises there is only one way for him to gain some peace and quiet. He must steal Christmas! However, as Christmas approaches, Cindy-Lou’s goodnatured schemes threaten to collide with the Grinch’s more nefarious ones. Funny, heart-warming and visually stunning, it’s a universal story about the spirit of Christmas and the indomitable power of optimism. The Grinch will be released in cinemas on 9 November. Primary Times has five The Grinch goody bags to give away. To be in with a chance of winning one, tell us what colour the Grinch is? For details of how to enter see below.

Friday 2 November. Teachers and schools are very welcome to send in a whole class’s entries in a single envelope. The winner will see their design used for the Primary Times Christmas card and will also receive fifty copies of the card with envelopes.
