Wildwood Wildcats

Wildwood Trust, in collaboration with Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust and Vincent Wildlife Trust, is taking the first steps in a ground-breaking new project to establish the first wild population of the functionally extinct wildcat outside of Scotland in over 200 years. The project will be the first of its kind outside of Scotland and could herald a new dawn for this iconic British species which is on the verge of total extinction in the wild. The European wildcat is Britain’s rarest mammal and the only native cat species surviving in Britain. The wild population is thought to be less than 300 individuals, living exclusively in the remote Scottish Highlands. However that population has been declared ‘functionally extinct’ which means that there is no longer a viable population left in the wild. The species was hunted and persecuted to extinction in England and Wales a century ago, resulting in its disappearance. Loss and fragmentation of habitat and more recently interbreeding with domestic and feral cats, means it has not been able to return. Until now. Laura Gardner, Director of Conservation at Wildwood Trust told Primary Times, “Our goal is to return a viable and self-sustaining wildcat population to its former range. As a leading British wildlife conservation charity, we have developed years of experience and expertise in breeding wildcats in support of the existing Scottish conservation project. We are now excited to be utilising these skills to benefit wildcat recovery more broadly across Britain. This will be a long term commitment for Wildwood requiring increased resources and infrastructure so we are relying on the public’s support to help.” After announcing this exciting new partnership last year, Wildwood is now taking the first steps in building new wildcat breeding facilities. Each enclosure will house a breeding pair of cats, whose kittens will later be released into the wild. Wildcat mating usually takes place between January and March with litters of 1-8 kittens born between April and May. Breeding wildcats is notoriously difficult, as any noise and disturbance can adversely affect the cats. To ensure the survival and safety of the kittens, stress must be kept to a minimum. With this in mind, the new breeding enclosures will be built off-show at Wildwood Trust’s parks, helping to prepare kittens for life in the wild. The Trust needs £50,000 to complete the build and is calling on the public to get involved by donating to the project and giving wildcats a brighter future. You can visit the Wildwood Trust near Canterbury in Kent. The Trust has over 200 native animals, past and present. It is set in beautiful ancient woodland where visitors can see bears, wolves, bison, deer, owls, foxes, red squirrels, wild boar, lynx, wild horses, badgers, beavers and many more.

Wild Child: Coming Home to Nature, by Patrick Barkham

From climbing trees and making dens, to building sandcastles and pond-dipping, many of the activities we associate with a happy childhood take place outdoors. And yet, the reality for many contemporary children is very different. The studies tell us that we are raising a generation who are so alienated from nature that they can’t identify the commonest birds or plants, they don’t know where their food comes from, they are shuttled between home, school and the shops and spend very little time in green spaces - let alone roaming free. In his timely and personal book, Wild Child: Coming Home to Nature, celebrated writer Patrick Barkham draws on his own experience as a parent and a forest school volunteer to explore the relationship between children and nature. Unfolding over the course of a year of snowsuits, muddy wellies and sunhats, Wild Child is both an intimate story of children finding their place in the natural world and a celebration of the delight we can all find in even modest patches of green. Wild Child: Coming Home to Nature is published by Granta Publications and is out now in paperback priced £9.99.

Lordswood Primary School 100 Minute Activity Challenge

Pupils from Lordswood Primary School in Chatham, part of Griffin Schools Trust (GST), raised £600 for the NHS, exercising and having lots of fun as they joined their PE teacher Karl Baker-May, Head of PE at GST, in a 100 minute workout challenge. Over 500 pupils from Nursery to Year 6, and parents, took part in the fundraiser with each year group participating in activities tailored to their age. “It was great having all the children joining in,” explained Mr Baker-May, former UK and European footgolf champion and twice winner of the Footgolf Ryder Cup. “We wanted to raise money for the hospital because Covid19 has impacted greatly on our local community.” Fundraising Officer for Medway NHS Foundation Trust, Cheryl Jones, told Primary Times, “We are extremely grateful to Lordswood Primary School for their brilliant efforts in raising £600 for the Medway Hospital Charity. This donation will help fund medical equipment to enhance facilities at Medway Maritime Hospital. Every donation has a positive impact on the experience of our patients and wellbeing of staff.”

Hair Today, Wigs Tomorrow

George Frow, who goes to Smarden Primary School, has been growing his hair since the first lockdown and has been raising money for The Little Princess Trust. The Little Princess Trust is a charity that provides real hair wigs to children and young people, up to the age of 24, who have lost their hair as a result of cancer treatment or other illnesses. His Grandpa had lost his hair due to cancer and George thought it would be a great idea not only to make his Grandpa happy but to help make a young person feel happy, especially when they are feeling very unwell. George had to grow his hair 7-10 inches long, before going to the hairdressers to have it cut. When he spoke to Primary Times, George had raised £1,280 – a magnificent total. One child wig costs £500 to make and although his original target was £200, if George raises £1500 that equals three wigs for three poorly children. We really hope he gets to £1500. If you would like to help, George’s Just Giving page is www.justgiving.com/fundraising/georgefrow10.

ABC of Opera: Classical This book is a spectacular musical adventure for children through the 500-year history of opera. Written by world-renowned opera singer, Mark Llewelyn Evans, ABC of Opera: Classical provides children with an enjoyable and educational first glimpse into the often daunting world of opera and classical music. When a school trip to the Natural History Museum in London reunites Jack and Megan with an old friend Trunk, they are whisked away to the Academy of Barmy Composers and the cities of Salzburg, Vienna and Paris for an adventure in opera’s classical period (1750–1820). Tasked with taking the music and stories of Windy Wolfie (Mozart, the penniless prodigy), Tortellini Rossini (the king of the dining table) and the moody but resilient Bilious Beethoven back to the present, will they be able to triumph over the return of Mozart’s most evil creation? It’s an accessible, fun introduction to opera for primary school children. Combining facts, jokes, songs, brilliant illustrations and a humorous story, this book is perfect for use as a teaching resource in schools as well for home-learning. The book has received praise from The National Children’s Orchestra who said, “The history of classical music has never been so much fun!” With two further ABC of Opera books planned, covering the Romantic and Modern music eras, these musical adventures through the history of opera are set to provide a unique and creative way to introduce children to this art form for many more years.

Wild Nights Out

Discover the magic of exploring the outdoors after dark with new book, Wild Nights Out, by Chris Salisbury. Take a walk on the wild side with the first nature guide to focus exclusively on exploring the

night. Since 1880 when the first house was fitted with electrical lighting, artificial light has become the norm, creating more and more spaces lit 24 hours a day. Whilst much was to be gained by this new dawn for humanity, we have also, in turn, lost our familiarity with the dark. Over time darkness has become something to be feared, associated with crime and nightmares, rather than mystery and enchantment. In Wild Nights Out, Chris Salisbury encourages us to venture out into the dark to experience the way our eyes adjust and our other senses are enhanced, and to find joy in the natural wonders of the night. Perfect for parents, campers, teachers, nature educators and anyone who has used lockdown to explore their own environments recently, this thrilling hands-on guide is an introduction to nocturnal wildlife, their behaviours, their habitats and how to observe them without being detected. Learn how to call for owls, walk like a fox and expand your sensory perceptions. Not only will this instil a lifelong love of the dark, it will also boost the resilience and self-confidence of children and adults alike. An outdoor educator, Chris shares over twenty-five games, walks and exercises to reacclimatise to the dark, and invites us into this nocturnal dimension with tales of the constellations and planets to share around the campfire. Whether it is a weekend away, summer holiday or just back garden adventures, his book provides all the practical information on how to conduct safe night walks, as well as interesting animal facts and mesmerising stargazing stories. Beautiful black-and-white illustrations are featured throughout. Wild Nights Out is published on 3 June at £14.99.

Education News Take One Picture

This summer, the National Gallery will showcase artworks by primary school children from across the UK in the 26th annual Take One Picture exhibition running from Thursday 17 June to Sunday 12 September. Each year the Gallery invites primary schools nationwide to focus on one of its paintings and respond creatively to its themes and subject matter, historical context, or composition. The programme aims to put art at the centre of children’s learning across the curriculum, inspiring a lifelong connection with artists’ work, museums and galleries. This year the National Gallery has selected The Battle of San Romano (painted probably about 1438–40) by Paolo Uccello as the source of inspiration. Photo credit: The National Gallery, London

Maidstone Grammar School for Girls, or “MGGS” as it is more fondly known, has a long and successful history in Maidstone and has provided outstanding education for girls since 1888. The first year at MGGS can be very different from primary school with a wider range of subjects, a lot of new faces, staff and friends to meet. Learning at MGGS is exciting. Subject specialist teachers have high standards to support students to achieve their full potential. Year 7 is extremely important to the team at MGGS, ensuring that every student develops to become a successful learner, enjoying learning while making excellent progress. MGGS’ strong community spirit is underpinned by the fact that the happiness of students is vital in enabling them to succeed. Their continued proven track record (OFSTED ‘outstanding’ since 2009), together with Advanced Thinking School status, underpins the academic curriculum provided, giving a thorough grounding for education and careers. There are so many exciting opportunities in Key Stage 3 - outstanding lessons, support from Learning Mentors, along with sports teams, clubs and an extensive range of enrichment activities. So what’s new for 2021? This year MGGS are offering Year 5 students and their parents/carers the opportunity to visit in person. After a year of social distancing, MGGS is now opening its doors. MGGS Physical Tours are now available on 5, 6, and 7 July. They are at allocated times between 9.05am-11.05am. Booking is required and full details can be found on the website at www.mggs.org. If you book for Year 5 11+ Open Mornings, MGGS will also be offering Year 5 11+ Exam online sessions via an online link for a limited time. If you would prefer a virtual tour of MGGS, they have some amazing videos which will really give you a flavour of the school. Whatever method you prefer, they are looking forward to welcoming you and your daughter to MGGS in July this year.

St Augustine Academy

Research shows that academic attainment and an atmosphere where their child feels happy and valued are top priorities for parents when choosing a secondary school. In Maidstone, that puts St Augustine Academy at the top of the list of ‘must see’ schools. A grammar stream gives all students the chance to shine and, as a small school, the Academy is able to monitor progress closely enabling all staff to focus on encouraging and supporting students as individuals. The Academy ethos promotes values that those of all faiths and none can agree on and underpins a calm environment where teachers can teach effectively. In addition to the standard curriculum, all students take part in an Enrichment Programme where they can choose from a unique range of diverse activities and subjects both at the Academy and at specialist venues nearby. Enjoy the St Augustine experience first-hand! Tours start on 9 and 10 June, then every Wednesday and Thursday starting at 9.30am and 11.30am. Call 01622 752 490 to book a place and visit www.saa.woodard.co.uk to see more of the Academy life. There are a few places available in Year 7 for this September. Please apply through the website as soon as possible.

Felix and the Hidden Treasure from Signature Entertainment will be in cinemas nationwide from 4 June with previews from 28 May.

Luca Set in a beautiful seaside town on the Italian Riviera, Luca is a comingof-age story about one young boy experiencing an unforgettable summer filled with gelato, pasta and endless scooter rides. The Mitchells vs. The Machines From the humans who brought you Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse and The LEGO Movie comes The Mitchells vs.The Machines, an animated action-comedy about an ordinary family who find themselves in the middle of their biggest family challenge yet… saving the world from the robot apocalypse. No big deal, right? It all starts when creative outsider Katie Mitchell is accepted into the film school of her dreams and is eager to leave home and find “her people”. Her nature-loving dad insists on having the whole family drive her to school and bond during one last totally-not-awkwardor-forced road trip. But just when the trip can’t get any worse, the family suddenly finds itself in the middle of the robot uprising! Everything from smart phones, to roombas, to evil Furbys are employed to capture every human on the planet. Now it’s up to the Mitchells, including upbeat mom Linda, quirky little brother Aaron, their squishy pug Monchi, and two friendly, but simple-minded robots to save humanity. The Mitchells vs.The Machines is on Netflix now.

ReNewToys

One of the biggest problems we face today is the impact of man-made materials on the environment. For example, 95% of the pollution in the Mediterranean Sea is plastic. Similar problems are being experienced all around the planet. It is with this idea in mind that Mondo, a multinational group with over 70 years of experience in the toy market, has launched ReNewToys. This brand-new set of beach products (buckets, rakes, spades and more) is built using recycled materials coming from the preconsumer food chain. Food grade plastics cannot contain dyes or other additives deemed harmful to humans, therefore enhancing the chemical safety of Mondo toys. They are the ideal choice for playing outdoors while taking care of our coastlines.

Winning @ Home Education Books

The world of education and learning has evolved rapidly since the pandemic, with youngsters now needing to engage in different ways, particularly when it comes to the “new normal” of learning from home. Some home education books can look a bit bland and don’t seem to represent today’s society. That certainly couldn’t be said of the new Winning @ Education series which is a fun and exciting way of introducing your child to maths and English. The Winning @ range is designed to help your child develop a love of learning from as young as 3 years old.The entertaining activities help children achieve their academic milestones and build their confidence. There are different objectives highlighted on every page to trace their progress and encourage children to work independently. These fun activity books will help increase confidence, independence and love of learning. All volumes in the series are available now from the publisher’s website at www.snowtigermedia.co.uk.

The Wingman

Perfect for playing in the park, the Wingman is light, quite small (15 cm across) and easy for little fingers. It throws like a Frisbee but with its unique aerodynamic design, Wingman flies over 130 feet and doesn’t veer off course to leave you or your partner hanging. With its silicone material, you can catch it easily by squishing it in your hand and fold it away to fit snugly in your pocket. It is described as indoors and outdoors safe and while it’s very light, I wouldn’t necessarily throw it at your favourite vase! It is however very unlikely to cause injuries. The Wingman is available at about £7 from Amazon and leading toy and leisure stores.

Fun Gardening Activities for Children It’s National Children’s Gardening Week from 29 May to 6 June, so it’s the perfect time to get children into gardening. Whether you have a small patio or a large lawn, gardening is a great and inexpensive way to get your little ones outside, appreciating nature and getting creative. Here are some fun ideas which we’ve put together in conjunction with Squire’s Garden Centres to get your children into gardening. Quirky Planter Creations

Turn unwanted items into perfect plant pots! You’ll be amazed at what can be recycled – old wellies, a pair of jeans, empty food tins or even plastic bottles all make fantastic planters. Then watch as your flowers bloom.

Create Crackin’ Cress Heads

Carefully remove the top of your eggs, wash the shells and dab them dry. Draw faces on your shells with felt tip pens. Dip some cotton wool in water, squeeze out the excess, and then place one cotton wool ball inside each shell. Sprinkle a few cress seeds on top. Sit your cress-filled shells in egg cups or an egg box on a sunny windowsill and watch them grow! Cress seeds are available for £1.99 at Squire’s.

Bring Bees to Your Garden

Gardens with bees mean that your flowers and fruit will be pollinated and then set seed, and most importantly produce fruit for you.To make bees welcome, why not add quiet areas in the garden for wildlife, including bees, to take over? World Bee Day is on 20 May.You could take the opportunity to make a bee hotel. Bee homes are fun to make and can be made into a pretty, as well as a useful, feature in the garden. The Wildlife Trusts have a guide about how to make one at https:// www.wildlifetrusts.org/actions/how-make-bee-hotel. If you really get

into bees in your garden, Friends of the Earth have a Bee Saver Kit which includes a spotter guide, hints about making your garden bee friendly, bee friendly seeds and more.

Grow Your Own

Try growing tomatoes, strawberries or even a pumpkin in time for Halloween! Pumpkin seeds can be sown outdoors in May and June and are £1.99 per pack at Squire’s.

Encourage Other Wildlife into Your Garden

Add flowering plants such as lavender, foxgloves or roses which provide nectar, plant a shrub or tree for shelter, create a log pile for bugs and insects, or add a pretty ladybird tower to your garden.

Sensational Sunflowers

Sunflowers are bright and cheery and very easy to grow. Sow seeds outdoors in May and the flowers will bloom from June to September. Sunflower seeds are available for £1.99 per pack at Squire’s. Squire’s also has a ‘tallest sunflower’ competition that children can enter. Simply take a photo of your child next to their tallest sunflower between 1-20 August 2021 for the chance to win £100! Find all the details at www.squiresgardencentres.co.uk

Make Your Own Miniature Terrarium

Use a clean glass or jam jar and add a layer of decorative stones and sand. Top with soil, and then add moss on top that will act as grass. Plant miniature plants or cuttings into your jar. Add a small rock, or even mini people, Lego figures, plastic dinosaurs or animals to really bring your terrarium to life!

There are 16 Squire’s Garden Centres across the South East. Shop instore or buy online for local delivery at www.squiresgardencentres. co.uk
