As sales of children’s books continue to rise, here are some really good stories to tempt you with. They seem to involve a lot of creepy characters, could it have something to do with the time of year I wonder? Sadly, some of them are all too human.

STAR READ

Debbie

The Starman and Me Sharon Cohen (Quercus, £6.99)

Kofi thinks he must be imagining the figure on a supermarket roundabout until he starts getting email messages from a Rorty Thrutch asking for help. Nothing can prepare him for the shock of actually meeting this small, dark, curled up being. Whoever he is he has no memory of how he ended up in Kofi’s village. It is soon evident he has exceptional powers, has been kidnapped and is being hunted, but by whom? Could his powers be anything to do with Kofi’s dad’s invention? Kofi and friends must keep Rorty safe while striving to discover who he is and how he came to be there, but there are many shocks and dangers to be faced. This is a fascinating story with quite disturbing undertones to really make us analyse the way we look at, and treat, others. With plenty of humour and pathos, it touches all our emotions and has enough twists to keep us gripped to the end. Long novel for older juniors.

Witch for a Week Kaye Umansky (Simon & Schuster, £6.99)

S

It was an ordinary day working in her dad’s shop for Elsie until a far from ordinary customer dropped in to place an advertisement. Magenta Sharp was a witch in need of a caretaker to look after her home for a week. It all sounded so easy, with lots of money on offer, of which the shop was desperately in need, so Elsie took the job. A nice quiet week away from her noisy family was just what she needed and she had no intention of trying any magic. However, staying in a magic tower with magical instructions is tempting especially with a lovelorn girl and vain woodcutter to deal with, surely a little bit of magic couldn’t hurt. See what it leads to in this very funny first book in a new series. Large print helps newly developing readers onto a medium length novel.

101 Dalmations - Dodie Smith/ Peter Bently/ Steven Lenton (Egmont, £6.99)

Pongo and Missis happiness was short lived when their fifteen pups mysteriously disappeared. Despite their best attempts, their owners couldn’t find them, but luckily dogs have a way of communicating with each other over long distances and the pups’ location was discovered. That was where the adventure began, for they had been dognapped by an evil woman who wanted to make their skins into a fur coat. There is a frantic dash against time to save the pups, full of danger and breath taking moments. This classic story with one of the scariest, nastiest characters in children’s literature has been adapted into a beautifully illustrated, wonderful picture book, making it accessible to younger, or less able, readers.

I Really Want the Cake Simon Philip/ Lucia Gaggiotti (Templar, £6.99)

You know how hard it is to resist cake — especially when an irresistible one is right in front of you. That’s what happens to the poor girl in this story — she is in torment. The cake is sitting there, begging to be eaten, but her mum has left a note saying she isn’t to eat it. What can she do? She tries everything to take her mind off it, but you know how impossible that can be, perhaps a little lick won’t hurt. You can imagine what that leads to! Oh dear! Perhaps there is a way to make amends. I’ll leave you to find out by reading this hilarious picture book with wonderfully expressive illustrations. It had me laughing out loud and, between us, it could have been written for me!!

Two budding artists, seven year-old Zeph Mangat from Riverhead Infants School near Sevenoaks and eleven year-old Ellie Kidd from Snodland CEP School have been named winners of Brake’s road safety poster competition. The pair wowed judges with their road safety designs which have been turned into large professional banners that have gone on display outside their schools. The messages will raise awareness in their community about the dangers of speeding. As well as having their designs turned into large banners, Zeph and Ellie also won a trip to their local fire stations and a visit from Brake mascot Zak the Zebra. The project, which included free resources for teachers, aimed to inspire and engage children about the need for drivers to slow down so kids can walk and cycle to school safely. It challenged children to create a poster about the dangers of adults speeding - something that puts kids’ lives at risk every single day. Dave Nichols, community engagement manager at Brake told Primary Times, “The poster competition was a fantastic opportunity for schools, children and parents to work together to help raise awareness about the dangers of speeding in their local community. We were really impressed by the high standard of entries we received and Zeph and Ellie’s designs showed real talent and knowledge about the subject for such a young age. A massive congratulations to them both and their schools.”

The special will bridge the gap between the film and the series due to start next year, starting from when Hiro discovers the chip his brother Tadashi designed to create Baymax. The young tech genius uses the chip to rebuild Baymax, but his overconfidence and use of shortcuts leads to trouble. Catch the one hour special on 30 November on Disney Channel and Disney XD at 4.30pm.

Mincemeat Shortbread Method

1. Preheat the oven to 160°C or Gas Mark 4. 2. Grease a 20 x 30 cm swiss roll style baking tray with butter and line it with greaseproof paper.

This is a delicious recipe for the Christmas period though you may find that you like it so much that you make it all year. It’s pretty simple but you should make sure you have an adult with you especially when you’re using the hot oven.

Ingredients

350g plain flour 225g unsalted butter 100g caster sugar 450g mincemeat (or 900g if you prefer more fruit. We did!) Icing sugar to dust Sifting the flour

3. Sift the flour into a large bowl. 4. Rub in the butter until the mixture looks like fine breadcrumbs (or use a food processor).

5. Stir in the sugar. 6. Sprinkle half the mixture onto the baking tray and press down lightly. 7. Spoon the mincemeat on top and spread as evenly as possible. This can

be a bit awkward so you may like to get your adult to help. It’s easier if you’re using the larger quantity of mincemeat. Be careful not to pick up the shortbread mixture. 8. Cover with the remaining mixture and press down lightly with the back of a fork. 9. Bake for 45-50 mins, until lightly browned. 10. Cool for 10 mins. Then cut into 24 squares. 11. Dust with icing sugar before serving.

The Untold Story of Father Christmas

Have you ever wondered where Father Christmas came from and how he came to live in Lapland making toys for children the world over? Now we may have the answer in this tale where an old toymaker meets the elves, becomes Father Christmas and gladdens the hearts of children and parents everywhere. This new book from Alison and Mike Battle, the brains behind the LaplandUK attraction is the first in a planned series and it’s fitting that it should start with the story of how it all began. The story will be enjoyed both by children and anyone who’s reading it aloud to them. The book itself is beautifully produced and illustrated, almost more coffee table book than typical children’s storybook. This does have the effect with high quality, thick paper and sturdy hard covers that it will survive many years of little fingers running through it. It could well become a family heirloom and Christmas tradition across the years. The Untold Story of Father Christmas is available from high street and online book shops or of course from LaplandUK’s own Elf Emporium at www.laplanduk.co.uk at a recommended price of £15. 8

Greenwich Theatre’s Snow-pocalypse: Friendship Never Melts is a wild and wacky winter show for 4+ years. The last two people in the world find the last book in the world and it’s a book all about something called ‘Christmas’. Trilby and TheBoot have never had a winter, or a snow ball fight, or even a pig in a blanket. What they do have is each other and maybe, just maybe, that is enough. Follow Snow-pocalypse’s two hapless heroes as they try to discover what this Crimbo-thing is really all about. What are presents? What is the point of tinsel? More importantly, will it snow? With silliness, light-up antlers and a whole lot of snow, the show’s two unlikely heroes create a wintery wonderland in a world where anything can be made from the scraps left behind and magic and mayhem is around every corner. Are you dreaming of a White Snow-pocalypsmas? Before the show, everyone can join the team to discover the treasures hidden in the things people discard. In the interactive crafting workshop you will make something that will be used in the actual performance that very day and after the show you can take what you made home for your own crafty Christmas. Snow-pocalypse: Friendship Never Melts will be running from 8 – 30 December at Greenwich Theatre. For more information and to book your tickets go to www.greenwichtheatre.org.uk.

Whatever the Weather! Fun Days Out with the Family

Christmas Past Comes to the RE Museum

Visitors to the Royal Engineers Museum, Gillingham on Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 December will have the chance to experience how Christmas was celebrated during the Second World War. Special displays and living history demonstrations will capture the ambience of 1940’s Christmas festivities including Lindy hop dancing and cooking Christmas Dinner on rations! Visitors will be able to find out how housewives improvised with innovative recipes such as mince pies using mash potato and “mock turkey” made from lamb to make sure Christmas Dinner was still a family treat.

For families, there’s a chance to meet Father Christmas in Sapper’s Santa’s Grotto where each child will receive a small traditional toy, wrapped not in the brightly coloured paper that is used today, but in old newspaper. Homemade decorations were commonplace and good way to maintain morale by brightening up the dark days of winter and children attending the special event will have the opportunity to make traditional peg-doll tree decorations to keep and take home. Air Raid Warden drills and historical talks will remind visitors that even at Yuletide danger was never far away. There’s also a fascinating display of Christmas artefacts and memorabilia from Germany showing how families there marked Christmas during the War. Admission prices at Kent’s largest military museum are £8.40 for adults, £5.70 for children and senior citizens and £22.50 for a family ticket. This includes access to the event and the Museum’s usual displays which tell the story of the Royal Engineers and how they have helped the British Army live, move and fight for over 300 years. The full details can be found at www.re-museum.co.uk

Out of School Can I Teach My Own Child to Swim? Parents often ask how they can teach their child to swim, even if they are not good or confident swimmers themselves. Some parents question whether an external teacher or classes are really necessary.

Parents teach their children many things every day and you may wonder why swimming should be any different. But teaching swimming can be more complex than most people think. Knowing how to keep the process of learning to swim progressive and efficient requires a mixture of science and creativity. If you know the science of swimming, the principles of teaching and have a good grasp of child psychology, plus, if you think your child will follow your instructions repeatedly without you or your child running out of patience, you may both find the learn to swim experience rewarding and successful. But it’s worth bearing in mind that there is a risk of getting it wrong and putting your child off swimming for a very long time or for a life time. Even with the best of intentions, parents may sometimes get things wrong. For example a water confident parent might think forcing their child’s face in the water is a good tactic to teach waterconfidence but it rarely is and often results in children refusing to allow water near their faces in future. Experienced swim teachers know how difficult it is to build trust with a child in the water and this process cannot be rushed. If a parent knows how to swim but doesn’t have any experience teaching it, the risk of pushing a child too fast at the beginning is very high. An out-of-pace start could make children feel unhappy and unsure about being in water and swimming in general. That’s why most people enroll their kids in swimming lessons because professional swim instructors have the right experience and training to know what to do and when to do different activities.

The weekly 3-hour classes focus equally on singing, dancing and acting with an inspirational specialist teacher for each discipline. Eva Johnson, 12, and her brother Sam, 10, are now Stagecoach regulars after initially attending a two-week trial a couple of years ago. Their mum told Primary Times, “My children absolutely loved it. They came home after the first day and were full of chatter about the friends they’d made and the fun they’d had.” Classes run during school term time. Stagecoach offers classes in singing, dancing and acting and your child can see what it’s all about in a two-week trial during the term for youngsters aged 4 to 18. To find out more about taking a two-week trial please call your local Stagecoach.

Muna Suleiman, Friends of the Earth air pollution campaigner told Primary Times, “We know the health effects of air pollution can be especially bad for children. Studies show that dirty air can cause and worsen asthma, impact brain development and can even reduce lung capacity for life. Our children deserve better. That’s why we’re committed to educating this generation about air pollution with our Clean Air Schools Pack.”

On Demand in Schools

Education News

Friends of the Earth Teaching Resources

Environmental charity Friends of the Earth has launched a Clean Air Schools Pack, a free educational resource to help primary school students learn about air pollution. The launch of the pack, endorsed by the National Union of Teachers, coincides with new guidance from the National Education Union which urges schools to monitor air pollution and learn about pollution in lessons. Children are particularly vulnerable to the effects of air pollution. Dirty air can cause and worsen asthma, impact brain development and even lead to smaller lung development. There are currently over 2000 schools, colleges and nurseries located in places with illegal levels of dirty air. Geared towards Key Stage Two, the packs contain three lesson plans to help transform pupils into budding scientists including air monitoring tubes which allow students to test for the harmful gas nitrogen dioxide. The pupils then get the opportunity to learn campaigning skills to make their voices heard.

The National Theatre’s On Demand in Schools service is the theatre’s digital initiative offering acclaimed, curriculum-linked productions, free of charge, to schools across the country. Every primary and secondary school in the UK can access world-class theatre on demand. The latest production to be added to the On Demand selection is last Christmas’s acclaimed Peter Pan. This wondrously inventive production of JM Barrie’s much loved tale sees a wonderfully headstrong Wendy and her brothers accompany Peter to Neverland, where Tinker Bell the fairy, Tiger Lily and the vengeful Captain Hook await and a riot of magic, music and make-believe ensues. Watch out for an amazing crocodile. On Demand in Schools complements trips to see live performances, enabling students to study plays day-to-day in their classroom. The plays are recorded in high definition in front of a live theatre audience by the National Theatre’s award-winning NT Live team and are available exclusively to UK schools. Teachers can study key scenes with students or show the full production over a number of lessons. Comprehensive learning resources produced by teachers and leading artists support each play. Big Schools’ Birdwatch

School children across the UK will be setting up bird feeders early next year, turning classrooms into bird hides and excitedly getting into position, to watch and count the birds in their school grounds for the 2018 RSPB Big Schools’ Birdwatch. The survey, which takes place during the first half of spring term (2 January – 23 February), is the biggest wildlife survey in schools. Children are asked to spend just one hour watching and recording the birds in their outdoor space, then send their results to the RSPB. 73,000 school children and teachers took part in the birdwatch in 2017 counting more than 100,000 birds. The blackbird remained the most common playground visitor for the ninth year in succession with over 88% schools spotting at least one. The top three was rounded off by starling and woodpigeon. The Birdwatch takes just one hour and teachers can pick any day during the first half of spring term to take part. It works across a wide age and ability range and there’s plenty of flexibility to run it as simply as teachers would like either as the centrepiece of cross-curricular studies, project work, or a way to improve their outdoor space. Many schools prepare for the event in advance by taking measures to give nature a home in their school grounds, such as putting up feeders and nestboxes and making bird cake. Seeing and counting the birds coming to their feeders during the Big Schools Birdwatch is the perfect reward for their efforts. Since its launch in 2002, more than 70 different species have been recorded in school grounds, ranging from starlings and house sparrows, to red kites and green woodpeckers. Register to take part in the 2018 RSPB Big Schools’ Birdwatch at rspb.org.uk/schoolswatch. Everything schools need to take part is available to download from the RSPB website. Save the date and order your free primary fundraising pack at www.sportrelief. com/primarytimes. She told Primary Times, “Our school believes it is extremely important to support Sport Relief. Our pupils always have lots of fun and work together to help improve the lives of those less fortunate than us. The materials produced by Sport Relief are really useful and inspiring, and help our pupils to see how their contributions can help change the lives of others forever.” 30
