Big Names Join Greenwich Theatre The autumn season at Greenwich Theatre is now well underway, with a series of big names joining the family theatre line-up. In September the popular book adaptations include ‘Guess How Much I Love You’, returning to Greenwich alongside a first visit for Pigtails Productions’ ‘How To Hide A Lion’. The show tells the story of a little girl trying to protect an escaped lion from the local townsfolk by attempting to squash him into a variety of sneaky tight spots. Then in October it’s the turn of ‘The Moomins’ who arrive at the Greenwich Theatre Studio for three special performances. This new show tells the story of a year in Moominvalley and each section of the story has an interactive element. Audience members have snowball fights, toast marshmallows around a fire and go sea-swimming. The highest profile event of them all, ‘Bing Live!’ arrives on 17 October with the CBeebies favourite transported to the stage with Bing, Sula, Coco and Pando learning all about how to tell stories by pretending, dressing-up and singing songs. The season comes to an end with the return of everyone’s favourite pantomime dame – Andrew Pollard – once again at the helm as Greenwich presents the rarely told story of ‘Robinson Crusoe’ in its own inimitable panto style. For the full season line-up, visit www.greenwichtheatre.org.uk or call the box office on 020 8858 7755. 4

Bake a Difference

It’s time to get your aprons on and bake up a storm as Bake a Difference returns for its third year. Taking place during 8-14 October, this will be the perfect chance to show off your hidden baking skills and raise money for Muscular Dystrophy UK. Anyone can put on their chef hat and get involved, from schools, offices and clubs – why not even host your own mini cake sale in your home? Bake a Difference started over three years ago with Oliver and Tricia De Laszlo, who decided to raise money for Muscular Dystrophy UK in an inclusive and fun way to support their son Sammy, who is living with Duchenne muscular dystrophy. This year Sammy is asking you to join him and his family to help ‘raise some dough’.You could bake cookies, cupcakes or show-stoppers – the family simply wish you to have as much fun as Sammy. Their experienced team will provide you with support along the way with fundraising tips and special Bake a Difference materials. The ‘icing on the cake’ is that you’ll help fund groundbreaking research into treatments and cures for musclewasting conditions. Sign up today and your local regional manager will be in touch. The event is free to register for and there is lots of fun to be had. For more information and to find out how you can get involved, please call 03000 120 172, email bakeadifference@musculardystrophyuk.org or visit www.musculardystrophyuk.org.

Reception Children Given Free Books

Do you have a reception child and is this your first copy of Primary Times? If so, welcome. You’re also in for another treat. School starters in England will receive their very own copy of the book Little Monkey this September as part of BookTrust’s Time to Read campaign. Now in its third year, the campaign encourages families to make time to read together, share stories every day and find the fun in reading. This funny and empowering picture book tells the tale of a little monkey in a big troop, in an even bigger jungle. Monkey has enough of missing out, of being too small for big adventures, so she bravely heads off all alone to climb to the top of the tallest tree in the jungle. Written and illustrated by Marta Altés, Little Monkey shows readers that the world is a big, wild and wonderful place where anything is possible. Little Monkey was chosen because of its fun, detailed illustrations and great message that no matter how small you are, or how big the world seems, you can accomplish anything if you put your mind to it. The book will be delivered inside a special Time to Read pack, containing a message for families about the importance of shared reading, alongside practical tips to help bring the story to life at home. Instant Ice Cream

This awesome Instant Ice Cream recipe comes from Dr Michelle Dickinson’s The Kitchen Science Cookbook. Dickinson has made it her life’s mission to make science and engineering accessible for all. This latest recipe looks at the scientific principle of phase change and takes 10 minutes.

Equipment and Ingredients

• One small zip-resealable sandwich bag • One large zip-resealable plastic bag • 120ml (1/2 cup) cream or full fat milk. • 12.5g (1 Tbsp) sugar • A few drops of vanilla or other flavouring of your choice • 3-7 cups of ice • 75g (5 Tbsp) salt

Instructions

1. Add the cream, sugar, and vanilla to the small bag and seal, ensuring that any excess air is released. 2. Place the ice, the salt and the cream-filled bag into the larger bag and seal. 3. Vigorously shake the large bag over a sink for approximately five minutes. Stop when the cream has started to freeze and turn into a solid. 4. Remove the small bag and quickly rinse off the salt solution with cold water. 5. Pour the ice cream into a bowl, add your favourite toppings and enjoy eating your newly frozen dessert.

Follow us on Twitter - @PT_Kent

Explanation

Ice cream is an emulsion, or a mixture of two liquids (water and fats) which do not normally mix together. To make ice cream, the milk or cream mixture needs to change its state from a liquid to a solid. If the mixture was simply placed straight into the freezer, the water part would freeze first, forming large, crunchy ice crystals. Ice cream tastes better when it is creamy rather than crunchy, so the goal in ice cream making is to create the smallest ice crystals possible. By vigorously shaking the bag, any large ice crystals that may be forming are broken up into smaller crystals, resulting in a smooth and creamy ice cream. The freezing point of ice is lowered by the addition of salt, so it starts to melt. As this ice melts it draws heat energy from its surroundings - including the cream mixture enclosed in the smaller bag - cooling it enough to cause the liquid cream emulsion to freeze, changing it from a liquid to a solid and forming ice cream.

The Kitchen Science Cookbook is perfect for parents and children to enjoy together. It’s packed full of fun experiments families can do at home. Dr Dickinson’s The Kitchen Science Cookbook is available online and from all good high street stores for £19.99.

According to the charity Young Minds, an average of three children in every classroom suffers from a diagnosable mental health problem such as depression, anxiety or an eating disorder. This is a staggering statistic and as a parent, not something you ever want your child to have to deal with. From body image and social media to peer pressure, there are so many obstacles that young people face which can really affect mental health. Combating these mental health issues from a young age is key. The performing arts offer children a fantastic platform to be expressive and channel emotions, bravery and courage, whilst learning new skills, being active, having fun with other local children and ultimately growing in confidence. Stagecoach Performing Arts inspires every child to unlock their potential. By splitting classes into singing, dancing and acting, children have the freedom to be creative within a structured and safe environment. Stagecoach has already made a difference to over one million students’ lives. Stagecoach runs Early Stages classes for 4-6 year olds, encouraging young children to use their imagination and make new friends. Main Stages for 6-18 year olds (divided by age into three groups) enable children to work together to be creative and have fun in a nurturing and supportive setting. If you and your child are interested in finding out more you can go along for a two week trial at the start of the Autumn Term. Cornwallis Academy

A new regime at Maidstone’s Cornwallis Academy has seen a rapid rise in standards and aspirations. Ofsted inspectors noted ‘significant changes’, including improvements in students’ academic results, standards of behaviour and in the quality of teaching at the school, when they last visited, in November 2017. They particularly praised the strong positive relationships between teachers and pupils in all subject areas. The school, in Linton, caters for students aged 11–18 and is now deemed to be ‘Good’ in all areas. Sixth Form students make more progress than those in other schools nationally, thanks to students being well-supported and given good guidance. A large percentage of students from the thriving Sixth Form go on to University, many to Russell Group institutions. The school has an active Student Council and recently re-introduced the ‘house’ system, which has brought in a healthy spirit of competition between the students. Headteacher, Mrs Isabelle Linney-Drouet, told Primary Times, “Our students have an excellent range of opportunities in which they can realise their full potential. We are now looking to push Cornwallis Academy from ‘good’ to ‘outstanding.” For more information, please visit www.cornwallisacademy.com.

Dartford Science & Technology College Dartford Science and Technology College (DSTC) is a Good school where pupils achieve well and thrive. They take pride in their constantly improving results both at GCSE and A level, where all groups of pupils make good or better progress. Teaching is very good, with both challenge and support in every lesson. Teachers

and pastoral staff know the girls well and support them in all aspects of their learning and welfare. A climate of excellence exists at DSTC. This is only possible because positive relationships are fostered between students, parents, staff and the wider community. They have high expectations with regard to behaviour and respect, which is why the College runs so smoothly. Additionally, they embrace strong transition with Primaries, ensuring that new entrants understand what to expect and who to turn to for support. Their highly acclaimed and well established Summer School is an integral part of the transition process, as it enables new Year 7 students to make the move to secondary school smoothly and confidently. DSTC values diversity and culture, ensures that equal opportunities are embedded and that their students participate fully in all school activities in order to reach their potential. Sutton Valence School

No two children are exactly alike. They all have their individual talents, likes and dislikes. Sutton Valence School recognises this and offers an almost bespoke journey for each child, both academically and beyond the classroom. Through the high expectations and standards Sutton Valence set, all their young people are encouraged and supported to go further than they had thought possible in their academic, co-curricular, community and leadership journeys. Every pupil has the opportunity to play a musical instrument, perform on stage, enjoy the creative arts and play a variety of sports at the level that best suits their interest and ability. When a child feels supported and valued for who they are, they are willing to push themselves beyond their comfort zone to discover the limits of their ability. Sutton Valence welcome a broad-ability cohort to Year 7. They have Open Mornings on Saturday 29 September and Saturday 10 November, with the Year 7 Entrance Exam taking place on Saturday 17 November. Choosing your new School

Welcome to The Ebbsfleet Academy

The Ebbsfleet Academy is a mixed, comprehensive secondary school in the heart of Ebbsfleet Garden City. We are at the start of our sixth year and are extremely proud of students’ successes, of our constantly improving results (amongst the highest in Kent non-selective schools) and of our first Ofsted outcome. We have a clear commitment to high expectations and achievement for all, with an excellent team of committed staff and outstanding facilities. Our ambition is to ensure that all of our pupils achieve their potential, develop as courteous, confident and capable young people and leave with an education that has fully equipped them to go on to university or the career of their choice. Above all, we want students who attend The Ebbsfleet Academy to feel safe, supported and happy, and to love coming to school. We know that the transition from primary to secondary school can be daunting for students (and parents!) so we aim to ensure that all students who begin here feel reassured, informed and supported. We run numerous transition events prior to students starting with us to give opportunities for them to experience classes, to navigate their way around the building and to meet teachers and peers. The academy boasts excellent transport links to and from surrounding towns including a bus that arrives on site both mornings and afternoons. We hope you are able to attend one of our open events and look forward to meeting you.

New Line Learning Academy

New Line Learning in Loose, Maidstone, is dedicated to giving students an education which stretches far beyond the classroom. The school, which caters for pupils aged 11–16, has seen a real change in fortunes since the appointment of Paul Murphy as head in September 2017. Standards have risen across all subject areas and pupils can benefit from a range of after-school clubs including sports, art and drama. Assemblies and tutor times provide helpful opportunities for pupils to reflect and learn about topics such as respect and equality. Under Mr Murphy’s leadership, a curriculum tailored to meet all abilities has been introduced, as well as a range of numeracy, literacy and enrichment initiatives. The curriculum was singled out for high praise in the school’s last Ofsted report, for aiding pupils’ broader development and preparing them for life in modern Britain. Mr Murphy is dedicated to creating an outstanding environment where pupils can not only succeed academically but also develop a range of skills and abilities to equip them for the future. The school even has its own farm. Mr Murphy told Primary Times, “There is a huge amount of potential at NLL. When it comes to choosing a secondary school for your child, you’ll have done all the research, talked to friends, and checked websites to ensure that your chosen school will successfully take your child through the most critical time of their development. Parents’ top priorities probably focus on both academic attainment and an atmosphere where your child feels happy and valued. The school should also equip them with skills to enable them to make a positive contribution to society in whatever path they choose to take in life. At St Augustine Academy they provide all of this. They ‘believe in more’ and have high expectations of excellence for all their students. The academy’s broad curriculum expands minds and horizons and the supportive atmosphere, combined with St Augustine’s outstanding facilities, enables students to be the best they can. The Academy’s excellent teaching and learning is reflected in their second endorsement by Ofsted who rated the academy as ‘Good’ in both 2014 and 2018. Nothing beats enjoying the St Augustine experience first-hand. Their Open Events take place on Thursday 13 September from 6–9pm and Saturday 15 September from 10am–1pm. Please also visit the website, www.saa.woodard.co.uk, to see more about the Academy life.

Education News Explore Learning

Explore Learning delivers extra tuition in centres nationwide. Keira is 10 years old and she has attended Explore Learning for over a year. Explore has helped with her confidence and has helped her to get to where she wants to be in her class. She feels happier knowing that she has already seen the work before, which gives her a real confidence boost. Her parents would recommend any other parent to Explore. Primary Times recently talked to Keira and her parents about her experience of Explore, “Explore isn’t what you think tuition would be like, instead it is made to be fun and enjoyable for all children, from every background. The Centre is inclusive and all children are treated equally. The tutors and the service motivate the children who perhaps wouldn’t usually want to go and do extra work. Keira, for example, would always come out saying how glad she was that she has been that day. The tutors support Keira to develop skills to progress in her learning. They encourage her to challenge herself, step out of her comfort zone and to be independent whilst giving her the extra support she requires. Keira enjoys the reward systems that are in place to encourage her to work hard and achieve her goals, and when she gets a certificate it makes her feel on top of the world.” Explore Learning has award-winning maths and English tuition centres nationwide. Get in touch today by calling 03301 243 802 to discuss your child’s needs and to book a free trial. Alternatively, please visit www.explorelearning.co.uk.

taster classes for families to be active together at home via Les Mills On Demand. With over 7 million children aged 5-15 in England facing health risks due to lack of exercise, the initiative is designed to support families in fostering life-long healthy habits.
