Leeds Castle ‘Big 900’ Story Writing Challenge!

Over 700 children entered the Leeds Castle ‘Big 900 Story Writing Challenge’ which celebrated 900 years of the Kent castle. All those shortlisted were invited with their mums and dads to a prestigious prize giving ceremony in the Castle Library. Lead Judge and children’s author Clare Balding announced the two winners and two highly commended runners up and described Leeds as “the friendliest Castle I’ve ever been to”! Children from across the country entered incredible stories on the themes of ‘Castles’ and ‘Time Travel’. A panel of 12 readers from the Castle’s Education Department spent hours reading all the entries and ten finalists were chosen from each age category, 5-9 years and 10-13 years, and were invited to the Castle. Each child received a copy of Clare’s brand new and not yet released for sale, book, “The Racehorse Who Learned To Dance”, which she personally signed. Theo Nyland was announced as the winner of the younger age category, with his captivating story “Thomas’ Time Travelling Adventure”. Theo was one of two Nyland brothers who got through to the final 20. Ella Davey, aged 12, was declared as the winner of the 10-13 years category with her ghostly tale named “Nine-Hundred Years”. The winners’ prizes included tickets for the Leeds Castle Fireworks Spectacular, a family stay at the Knight’s Glamping and a private tour of the Castle as well as a hamper of goodies. The winners’ stories are available online and will also be buried in the Leeds Castle time capsule.

The maze is ideal for the kids to run around and lose themselves for a couple of hours. This year’s theme is Crops & Robbers - a farm theme based on the age-old battle between scarecrows and crows! The price includes a game card and map - the object of the game will be to find all the pesky crows and their swag bags within the scarecrow shaped maze to help you make a scarecrow on your game card. Game stations will include a question to give a final outcome at the end. They also have a Mini Maze with a further ten game stations. Fill out your game card correctly for the chance to be entered into a prize draw. After you have conquered the maze why not spend time picking some fresh fruit and vegetables straight from the plants on the Pick Your Own farm? Crops include strawberries, raspberries, blackcurrants, blackberries, runner beans and sweet corn but please note availability

School’s Out for Summer...

International Bat Night

International Bat Night is a popular annual event to draw public awareness to threatened bat populations across the world. Bat Night has taken place every year since 1997 in more than 30 countries on the last full weekend of August. This year, International Bat Night is on 24 and 25 August. Bats are mammals, and in fact they are the only mammals that can fly. Like other mammals, including ourselves and many of our pets, they have hair or fur on their bodies and are warm-blooded. In the UK, there are 17 different types of bats. Many people think bats are blind, but in fact they can see almost as well as humans. However, at night, their ears are more important than their eyes - they use a special sonar system called ‘echolocation,’ meaning they find things using echoes. Why not see and hear bats in their natural environment by taking part in a range of events organised by local bat groups, wildlife trusts, countryside rangers and other organisations across the country? In your local area, be sure to find a bat walk over the holidays. They often take place at dusk. Bat walk leaders have equipment specialised to hear the bat’s echoes and cries, called a bat detector.

The Big Seaweed Search

It’s slippery, slimy, smelly stuff but it’s not just something that messes up your day at the seaside. Seaweed is vitally important to our coastal ecology. Seaweed provides protection from waves and storms, shelter for fish and shellfish, energy for intertidal creatures and even food for us. With around 650 seaweed species in the UK, we are living in a global diversity hotspot.

The Essential Guide to Pond Dipping

Ponds have a huge variety of amazing little creatures just waiting to be discovered. Get your nets and magnifying glasses at the ready and go pond dipping this summer, either in your garden, at your local park or in a local Woodland Trust nature reserve. First on the essential list is getting your equipment – a net, a lightcoloured shallow tray or plastic container to inspect your findings in, plastic spoons, a magnifying glass, ID sheets and notebook to record your findings and a phone or camera. Follow this handy guide to ensure your pond dipping success. First, scoop some pond water into your container so the little creatures will be happy swimming around in it. Lie on your tummy or kneel by the side of the pond and sweep your net slowly through the water – a figure of eight shape works best. Then take your net out and carefully turn it inside out so the creatures you’ve caught drop into the container. You can then use your spoon to scoop them up and get a closer look. But don’t touch them as you might hurt them. Check out the Woodland Trust’s pond dipping guide online for pictures to help you identify your finds. Show off your findings to The Woodland Trust on social media using #NatureDetectives. And if you want more ideas like this through the post, why not become a Woodland Trust Nature Detective? Find out more at www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/naturedetectives. Photo credit: Catherine Starling

Calling all young adventurers, why not do some searching this Summer without the ‘power of Google’!

The Big Seaweed Search (www.bigseaweedsearch.org) is a citizen science project devised by the Natural History Museum and delivered in partnership with the Marine Conservation Society. The search itself is simple and is designed so that anyone can download the materials and take part on any shore where seaweed is growing. No special knowledge is required and a selection of 14 types of seaweed are featured in a userfriendly guide and recording sheet. Why not have a nice walk along the beach and at the same time help to provide data so that scientists can discover how our UK seaweeds are changing in abundance and distribution, in response to rising sea surface temperature, increasing ocean acidification and the spread of non-native species. Wild Things

WWF Seek App

Packed with over 100 magical outdoor activities, this fantastical guidebook will develop children’s wild senses and skills, and help them unlock the magical power of nature. Children can discover mythical creatures in forests and meadows, in ponds, rivers and at the seaside, as well as everyday places close to home such as school playgrounds, local parks, or among the pots on the patio. From tracking dragons to creating shadow giants, children can find Wild Things wherever they look, all year round.

The app draws from millions of wildlife observations and shows you commonly recorded insects, birds, plants, amphibians, and more in your local area. You can add different species to your observations and learn about them in the process. The app also challenges you to find and identify species, plants and fungus, earning badges along the way. The more observations you make, the more discovery badges you earn.

Have you ever wanted to spy on fairies in the garden, meet a unicorn or share a picnic with a mermaid? Wild Things, published by Lonely Planet Kids and written by the authors of the hugely successful Stick Book, will show how, with a little imagination, a few wild materials and some basic tools, you can.

Bursting with brilliant ideas, inspiring photography and beautiful illustrations, Wild Things shows children how to create flower fairies and leaf elves, and craft fairy fashions from colourful petals. Brew magic potions from berries and herbs, build unicorns from snow, make mini-worlds from wild materials and much more. Uncover the enchantment of amazing, make-believe worlds, as this exciting new guide gets you and the family outside. Written by Jo Schofield and Fiona Danks, Wild Things is available online and from all good high street stores for £12.99.

Ahead of the summer holidays, WWF (The Worldwide Fund for Nature) has unveiled a new version of a child-friendly app to encourage young people to head outside this summer and connect with the natural world. The ‘Seek’ app uses live image recognition and augmented reality to identify plants, insects and wildlife right in front of you. It’s been created by iNaturalist - the world’s largest online community for nature enthusiasts and aims to inspire young people about the natural world.

Through the connection with the iNaturalist platform, people can safely submit their findings to a global biodiversity database. So as well as the Seek app being fun and educational for families, it also helps to contribute additional data accessible to scientists around the world, to help them better understand and map biodiversity in places all over the world. Seek is available to download for free on both iOS and Android.

Visitors and collectors will also have the opportunity to browse hundreds of trader stalls. There are multiperiod arena events and battlefield re-enactments. See ancient history come alive with arena battles between Saxons and Vikings with lots of sword swinging and shield bashing action.

Have you ever visited a butterfly enclosure? Felt the warmth of tropical heat, admired the unusual plants and marvelled at the butterflies flitting through the air around you? It’s an unforgettable experience and one Millbrook Garden Centres in Gravesend and Staplehurst would love to share with you and your family this summer between 1 July and 14 September.

Southern Skirmish will be bringing the American Civil War to life with a major engagement on the main battlefield. New Woodland Skirmish and Spearfish Creek will depict life in the Wild West with their ever-increasing display and gun fight. There will be plenty of World War 2 displays and major battles with tanks, vehicles and artillery. There are always plenty of bangs and explosions on the battlefield for one of the biggest World War 2 battle recreations in the country. For more information visit www. military-odyssey.com

The Benefits of Performing Arts

Stagecoach Performing Arts inspires every child to unlock their potential and develop their Creative Courage for Life. By splitting classes into singing, dancing and acting classes, children have the freedom to be creative within a structured and safe environment. Students learn more than the Performing Arts; they learn skills to help them succeed on the stage of life. The performing arts teach children to be brave, to speak up and have the courage to share their opinions. It teaches life skills such as working in a team, resilience and self-esteem. It is an outlet for children to be active and expressive within a creative setting while using concentration, commitment and determination. Principals of Stagecoach schools have a passion for the arts and lead teams of dedicated, enthusiastic and experienced teachers to ensure all children thrive. Children of all abilities are welcome; there’s no experience necessary and the schools are inclusive. Stagecoach runs Early Stages classes for four-six year olds, encouraging young children to use their imagination and make new friends. Main Stages for seven-eighteen year olds (divided by age into three groups) enable children to work together to be creative and have fun in a nurturing and supportive setting. If you and your child are interested in finding out more, go along for a two week trial at the start of the Autumn Term which begins in September. Many schools also run holiday workshops during the summer holidays which are a fantastic introduction to the performing arts and a creative way to spend time while making new friends. See your local school’s website for further details.

The Children’s Refugee Crisis

Do you sometimes find it hard to explain to your pupils or your children about the refugee crisis? A new book, Forced to Flee, in which refugee children explain, in their own words and pictures, their thoughts, feelings and experiences about being forced to flee their homes for safety has been produced by UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency. This children’s book focuses on three ongoing refugee situations - Syria, South Sudan and Central America. Forced to Flee explains for a young audience how each crisis came about, why children and their families had to flee, the support that they receive from UNHCR and other organisations and what life is like for them now. Harrowing and heart breaking, the artworks by child refugees vividly highlight the impact that conflict and war have on people’s lives. Forced to Flee is an educational title that will support children’s study of current affairs, raise awareness of the ongoing refugee crisis and help children to be more empathetic by thinking about the lives of other children around the world. Funds raised will contribute to supporting UNHCR and refugees.

The school’s continued proven track record (OFSTED ‘outstanding’ since 2009), together with its Advanced Thinking School status, underpins the academic curriculum at MGGS, providing students with a thorough grounding for their careers which will take them far into the 21st century. There is a programme of primary school events for Years 4, 5 and 6 at MGGS. They also offer ‘Taster Days’ and ‘One Off Taster Lessons’ throughout the year for parents/carers to book directly online. There are also additional activities for girls in Years 5 and 6 in the Maidstone area looking for a grammar school place. Their ‘Summer School Fun!’ is also available for parents/carers to book directly for girls and boys in Years 4 and 5. For full details, dates, booking conditions and how to book, just visit www.mggs.org/online-bookings and complete the online booking form – it’s that simple.

From Disney and visionary director Tim Burton comes the all-new live-action adventure, Dumbo. The movie expands on the beloved classic story where differences are celebrated, family is cherished and dreams take flight. Circus owner Max Medici enlists former star Holt Farrier and his children Milly and Joe to care for a new born elephant whose oversized ears make him a laughing stock in an already struggling circus. But when they discover that Dumbo can fly, the circus makes an incredible comeback, attracting persuasive entrepreneur V A Vandevere who recruits Dumbo for his newest, larger-than-life entertainment venture, Dreamland. Dumbo soars to new heights alongside a charming and spectacular aerial artist, Colette Marchant, until Holt learns that, beneath its shiny veneer, Dreamland is full of dark secrets. Dumbo is released on Digital, DVD and Blu-Ray everywhere from 29 July 2019.
